ESPN’s Heather Dinich has more on the previously reported meeting between the SEC & Big Ten next week in Nashville. Per an unnamed B1G source: “There is hope that we can definitely move the needle and make some progress on different things.” Another source: “If we're all going to figure this out, we've got to be on equal footing.” A third source, this one from the SEC: “I'm for anything that gives us the maximum number of postseason opportunities. I don't count bowl games as postseason opportunities. I think anything we can do to take the subjectivity of a committee off the table is really helpful. We may not be able to completely get rid of subjectivity the more we can minimize it. And so Tony Petitti's idea of multiple automatic spots for a conference has a lot of value. I'm not sure four is the right number.” (link)

California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill that hit his desk today that would have required “collectives to submit details for NIL deals worth $5,000 or more to the school the athlete attends.” Newsom: “College sports are in a period of transition, as many schools are changing athletic conferences and relevant issues are currently pending in the courts. As Governor, I want to ensure California’s colleges continue to be competitive with other states. Further changes to this dynamic should be done nationally.” More from On3’s Pete Nakos & the San Francisco Chronicle’s Ron Kroichick. (link, link)

Tulane AD David Harris talks to the Times-Picayune’s Guerry Smith about the decision to rebuff overtures from the Pac-12, emphasizing that, while he took part in “regular conversations,” such decisions are “made at the presidential level.” Nonetheless, Harris lauds communication between AAC ADs that prevented the typical “every school for itself” mentality. AAC exit fees, uncertainty about Pac-12 media right revenues, travel and stability questions were all factors, per Harris: “You’ve got to look at what are the future prospects of this league that’s really just resurrecting and whether or not you feel it is going to continue to be stable and grow and prosper over the next several years. You’re dealing with information that often times is speculation. You don’t have any guarantees about exactly what it’s going to be.” Harris does note, however, that the Green Wave isn’t opposed to making a move: “We want the American to be as strong as possible, but certainly if there’s a Power Four option that would come our way, we will have prepared ourselves that we can be a strong and competitive member.” (link)

SBJ’s Ben Portnoy gets perspectives on realignment from the Pacific Northwest and the machinations over the last six months. As the picture for the Pac-12 became clearer over the last few weeks, with the addition of Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Utah State, Washington State Senior Assoc. AD/Asst. VP for Advancement Adam Ganders says: “There’s a lot of scenario planning that you’re going through. But to finally take one of those scenarios and move forward with it, that certainly has been well-received by our donors.” Washington AD Pat Chun, whose move from Pullman to Seattle came together in five days from first contact by President Ana Mari Cauce to MOU, on the move to the Big Ten: “What I’ve reminded our donors is the decision to go to the Big Ten ultimately affirmed our future in college athletics. Being at a half-share, our present is what we’ve got to focus on right now, because whenever the calendar turns and we’re in 2031 and our TV deal resets, Washington, going forward, will be in rarefied air.” Cougars AD Anne McCoy on the future of the rivalry: “I think it’s exactly because of why people don’t want to play [the Apple Cup] is why we need to play, to be honest. It’s such a tradition that all of the other pieces of college athletics shouldn’t take that away.” (link)

Coastal Carolina Chairman Emeritus of Athletics Joe Moglia pens again for Sports Business Journal. Of note: “I wouldn’t want to be part of an institution where only super elite athletes get to compete, and the rest never experience the lessons, joy, health benefits and character development the college playing field uniquely provides. Yet that is increasingly where the NCAA is going. If the major revenue sports are not spun off from the NCAA, college athletics will be crushed in the United States. [...] We must acknowledge that D-I football and basketball are businesses and not amateur pursuits, as the NCAA likes to pretend. Only under those conditions can we deal honestly with the purpose of athletics for most students at most schools. [...] The NCAA can still go back to protecting amateur student athletes, but only if it rids itself of professional sports. Administrators will need to step up and lead the spin-off of those sports (a topic I recently wrote about). And they’ll need to push NCAA President Charlie Baker to refocus on the core mission of the organization, rather than wasting his time trying to get monopoly approval from Capitol Hill.” (link)

Numerous schools across the Carolinas have been forced to alter schedules and relocate students in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. UNC Asheville has canceled classes until October 9, while Appalachian State and Western Carolina will remain closed through this week. UNC Asheville Chancellor Kimberly van Noort: “Conditions at UNC Asheville are difficult. Significant tree damage has occurred and parts of campus are inaccessible. Everyone is safe. Cell and internet coverage is nonexistent at this point.” In South Carolina, Clemson has opened up its facilities to charge devices or utilize public Wi-Fi, while Furman has been forced to cancel classes through at least Wednesday because of ongoing power outages. From a statement by Furman officials: “The lack of power and full access to the internet greatly impacts students’ living conditions, classrooms, dining and activities. Moreover, the vast majority of Furman’s faculty and staff do not have power at home, and many are dealing with storm damage.” Meanwhile, students in Florida and Georgia are returning to normal operations as of Monday following numerous cancellations and, in some cases, campus evacuations. + North Dakota State inks a five-year deal with Under Armour, beginning July 2025. (link)
+ Hofstra extends its partnership with Nike and BSN Sports to continue serving as the Pride’s official apparel and equipment provider. (link)
+ Major League Baseball officially pulls the plug on Nike’s controversial new uniforms after just one season, announcing that it will begin replacing them with their predecessors starting in 2025. With both old and new versions manufactured by Fanatics, “all road grey uniforms will revert to the materials and design used from 2018 through 2023. All other uniforms will follow suit in 2026. Previous planned changes to home whites and alternate jerseys for 2025 will remain in place next season, with the full reversion happening in 2026.” Nike representatives didn’t immediately respond with comment when asked if the company had plans for another attempt to revamp the jerseys under its current MLB deal. Athlete criticism over the uniforms regarding fit, customization options and their see-through nature, and from fans about logo size, lettering and quality started immediately when introduced back during spring training. Facility Features…
+ Wisconsin highlights its recently installed Daktronics auxiliary end zone display and ribbon displays at Camp Randall Stadium totaling 12,000 sq. ft. and 10 million pixels as well as a custom audio system. Overall, five different-sized displays join to form the fifth largest scoreboard in college football at 48 feet high by 148.5 feet wide. “Featuring variable content zoning, this can show one large image across all displays or it can show multiple zones of content including live video, instant replays, up-to-the-minute statistics, graphics, animations and sponsorship messages.” An auxiliary end zone video display on Kellner Hall measures 18 feet high by 56.5 feet wide, while two ribbon displays of 3.5 feet high by 396 feet long are mounted to the seating fascia to highlight sponsors and deliver graphics and animations. DirectTV will acquire Dish Network from EchoStar for $1 and assume nearly half of Dish’s $20 billion debt. Further from Axios: “TPG will buy AT&T's 70% stake in DirecTV for $7.6 billion. That is not contingent on the Dish deal closing.” What does it all mean? “The deal immediately reshapes the pay-TV pecking order amid threats from cord-cutting and the rise of streaming. The combined entity, which also includes Dish's Sling TV streaming cable bundle, would have an estimated 20 million subscribers. Both have lost nearly half of their subscriber base since 2013, which is considered the high point of the pay-TV era. DirecTV had more than 20 million subscribers by itself that year.” (link)

The Washington Post’s Jesse Dougherty writes on Hawaii’s unique marketplace positioning as UH booster Mike Kawazoe, backed by an IC360 presentation & with the permission of Rainbow Warriors AD Craig Angelos, had been representing the university in conversations with content streamers & other potential partners as the gambling handle on UH contests continues to be a unique value prop. Angelos: “Could we go independent and schedule 13 home games at 6 p.m. local, getting so much money from a TV partner that we can pay big money to schools to come out, even in the middle of their conference schedules? See, that’s a pipe dream. It probably could never work quite like that. But maybe it’s something of that sort, maybe it’s nine home games, maybe it’s remaining in the Mountain West … and having our own television carve-out still. That’s how we have to be thinking.” Kawazoe: “The people at networks I’ve talked to, they’re like, ‘I see it, but when I take it to the higher-ups and have the conversation, it’s: ‘What do we price it at?’ That’s the big question: What is this worth?” Dougherty: “One catch, though, is that intrigued networks would be significantly more intrigued if Hawaii had broken off from the Mountain West and went independent in football. That’s no longer an option — at least for the foreseeable future — after Hawaii signed on Thursday to remain a football-only member until 2032. With conference realignment in full swing again, the Mountain West offered financial incentives for a renewed commitment from its remaining schools. Hawaii chose that over leaping into the abyss.” Lots here…interesting read. (link)
|
More from UNLV AD Erick Harper, who was asked if some of the $10M-$14M lump sum payment from the Mountain West could be used to retain Football HC Barry Odom: “If retaining our coach isn’t a priority, then I need to be fired.” Also from the Las Vegas Sun’s Mike Grimala: “While the Pac-12 has been pitching members on a projected media deal that would pay each school up to $12 million per year, UNLV president Keith Whitfield and AD Erick Harper said the Mountain West didn’t share any such projection.” (link)

New Santa Clara AD Heather Owen talks about her vision for the Broncos athletic department, which includes tapping into the resources of Silicon Valley. “From San Francisco down to San Jose, we can offer something that other markets can’t. We have got to figure out how to capitalize on that.” Doing so, Owen hopes, will allow the Broncos to best position themselves as conferences continue to realign. “You want to be at the top so when that merry go round starts up again, you can actually get on it and talk about it.” Owen says of her decision to take the job that it would’ve been easy to remain at Stanford, but recalls former Cardinal Women’s Basketball HC Tara VanDerveer telling her: “I just got off the phone with [Santa Clara] President Julie Sullivan, and you should crawl down the 101 to take that job offer. If you get this offer, you have got to go.” Owen took the advice of her former coach and says she wants to “provide great opportunities for both men and women to compete at the highest level. If we were out of balance, if you will, and not providing those opportunities to both men and women, this wouldn’t have been a place for me.” (link)

“I’ve never heard too many fans talk about their love of this. As fans, we sit back and say, ‘We’d like to get to know the players. We’d like to see them grow and develop.’ Now you just don’t have that same luxury. It’s just different. We’ll all get used to it in time, but it’s going to take that. It’s going to take time.” That’s Rhode Island AD Thorr Bjorn on managing in the current landscape of college athletics. Bjorn also talks potential March Madness expansion: “Do you really want the 14th team from a Power Four league to be in that tournament? Are we really hoping for the third or fourth team in the Atlantic 10 or the American or somewhere else? Just because we get an expansion doesn’t mean we get what we want in terms of access.” Providence AD Steve Napolillo on seemingly constant conversations around fellow Big East member UConn: “At the end of the day, it’s always been about football for them. Will it move the needle? Time will tell. I’m glad I don’t have football at Providence, to be honest with you. We’ve got to focus on what we do.” (link)

"Is there an opportunity for me to give back to an industry that has given me so much as a student-athlete?" That's Northwestern Deputy AD for Operations and Capital Projects Deneé Barracato, who sits down with CSA/Connect's Steph Garcia Cichosz for an in-depth conversation about being a Latina in sports, balancing motherhood with career ambitions, and using moments of adversity as positive momentum. Barracato reflects on her time as AD at York College (DIII) as well as her time working around the pinnacle of sports while working in marketing at Madison Square Garden and how both experiences have informed the way she serves as a leader for the Wildcats today. Barracato on what was the most surprising thing about serving as an AD: “I think the most surprising thing is that you think that you know until you know. Everyone thinks that they know what it is to sit in the chair until they've actually done it, and the surprising thing is just all the information, all the individuals that come to you and how overwhelming it can be at times, especially when you're going through things that no one else knows that you're going through. … I admire a lot of the athletic directors and vice presidents that are sitting in the chair at this this level because it is one that's taxing because you always have to keep the student-athletes in mind while also keeping the institution in mind right and the reputation of that institution and knowing that you're an ambassador for that and everyone is always watching.” More on Connect. The California Legends Collective has launched a “Million Dollar GameDay Match” campaign, spurred by ESPN’s College GameDay’s first appearance on Cal’s campus in the show’s history. Arkansas Razorback Foundation Executive Director/NAADD President Ryan White sits down with D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle to outline NAADD initiatives and conversations around NIL, development, collectives and more. The two also discuss new Men’s Basketball HC John Calipari’s impact on season ticket requests and how the Razorbacks can leverage that to drive funding for renovations to Bud Walton Arena. White says Calipari’s hiring was a big lift for the fan base, and the “marketing team went right to work and said, ‘Hey, if you don't have season tickets, are you interested?’ We had over 800 requests from people that didn't have season tickets that now want season tickets. … I was down in Dallas the other day [with a] really wealthy donor down there for us [who’s] not super engaged because it's about five hours and his wife said, ‘Hey, with the hiring of Cal we’ll be up for every basketball game.’ So, that’s the Cal effect.” (link)

California Governor Gavin Newsom announced Saturday he signed into law Assembly Bill 1575, which requires public colleges and universities to allow students to have an adviser when facing an alleged violation of a student code of conduct. The law was spurred by the death of former Stanford women’s soccer student-athlete Katie Meyer, who took her life in February 2022. Meyer’s family, which filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Stanford nine months after Katie's death, said the university provided inadequate support when she faced a disciplinary matter at the time of her death. According to a Wall Street Journal analysis of the latest available Education Department data, the number of Northerners going to Southern public schools went up 84% over the past two decades, and jumped 30% from 2018 to 2022. The WSJ’s Douglas Belkin and Andrea Fuller: “Students say they are searching for the fun and school spirit emanating from the South on their social-media feeds. Their parents cite lower tuition and less debt, and warmer weather. College counselors also say many teens are eager to trade the political polarization ripping apart campuses in New England and New York for the sense of community epitomized by the South’s football Saturdays. Promising job prospects after graduation can sweeten the pot. … Though far more students apply to Ivy League schools than in 2002, some of the hottest Southern public schools—including Clemson and Georgia Institute of Technology—have seen even a bigger spike in interest. At Alabama, applications were up more than 600% in the same period—about three times as much as bids to attend Harvard.” Lots more. (link)

Meet “Fireball,” the Miami Heat’s new scoreboard inside the Kaseya Center. Fireball is a “dynamic three-dimensional replica of the team’s iconic ball and flame logo,” according to a Heat press release, which adds: “The flame ball features 2,525 square feet of LED screens, which are capable of variable content zoning allowing them to show one large image or multiple zones of engaging content. The flame ball is framed by four large video displays measuring 19.5 feet by 29.5 feet, two top ring displays and four underbelly displays totaling 7,440 square feet and 55 million pixels of digital display space.” The four underbelly displays on the new scoreboard are the same size as the old video boards at 9 feet by 15.5 feet. Each of the new scoreboard’s large video displays are about twice as large as the old displays at 19.5 feet by 29.5 feet. Check it out. (link)
