Numerous schools across the Carolinas and Tennessee have been forced to alter schedules and relocate students in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Lees-McRae will remain online through at least October 22, with Tusculum to remain online through October 16. A number of institutions will remain closed this week with some set to resume contests later this week or this upcoming weekend. Converse has postponed all contests through October 9. Following the latest House settlement happenings, Sportico’s Michael McCann writes that U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken could permit other interested parties to file objections and hold hearings to evaluate their arguments. Also from McCann: “Even if Wilken grants preliminary approval, that doesn’t mean she’ll grant final approval. She’ll then look at how many athletes opt out and hear concerns raised in a fairness hearing. There’s also the possibility the settlement could be challenged at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and then at the U.S. Supreme Court. It could be years before the settlement is actually in force. The settlement could also collapse along the way, and the three lawsuits would then return to the docket. The NCAA could rationally decide that it would likely win the three lawsuits given applicable precedent.” At the same time, McCann notes that “one structural problem for the settlement is that it resembles a labor agreement without labor having a voice. So long as college athletes aren’t recognized as employees, they won’t be able to unionize. That means any restraints on their economic opportunities will be fair game for antitrust litigation, since the non-statutory labor exemption only insulates collectively bargained terms from antitrust exposure. And no matter what happens with the settlement, it can’t stop labor and employment lawsuits (including Johnson v. NCAA), NLRB charges (including those involving Dartmouth and USC athletes) and, especially given that male athletes would receive more money than female athletes under the settlement, lawsuits brought under Title IX.” (link)

The MIAA has issued an RFP to host the Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament, per Commissioner Mike Racy, as the conference’s current contract with Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City runs through 2026. Racy: ”It is a discussion that our presidents will have for the first time when they get together in January and there's really no set timeline, but I do think that our presidents are hoping they're in a position that they can make a decision by this year's tournament and and make an announcement whether we're continuing with a new agreement in Kansas City and how long that will be for or whether there's a new home for the MIAA basketball championships. […] The good news that I would tell MIAA basketball fans is that we have some choices. Kansas City wants us and they want us to stay and there are some other communities that want us really bad. They're going to do everything they can to show our ADs and our presidents why the MIAA basketball tournament should be in their community, so it's good to have options, it's good to be wanted, it's good that these communities recognize how passionate MIAA fans are for basketball and that they'll travel and show up and create a great environment. It also helps when we've got nationally ranked men's and women's teams that people want to come and watch.” (link)

According to a Wall Street Journal analysis of the latest available Education Department data, the number of Northerners going to Southern public schools went up 84% over the past two decades, and jumped 30% from 2018 to 2022. The WSJ’s Douglas Belkin and Andrea Fuller: “Students say they are searching for the fun and school spirit emanating from the South on their social-media feeds. Their parents cite lower tuition and less debt, and warmer weather. College counselors also say many teens are eager to trade the political polarization ripping apart campuses in New England and New York for the sense of community epitomized by the South’s football Saturdays. Promising job prospects after graduation can sweeten the pot. … Though far more students apply to Ivy League schools than in 2002, some of the hottest Southern public schools—including Clemson and Georgia Institute of Technology—have seen even a bigger spike in interest. At Alabama, applications were up more than 600% in the same period—about three times as much as bids to attend Harvard.” Lots more. (link)
