More from SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey’s time yesterday on The Triple Option. First up, his views on a potential for a Commissioner overseeing college football: “I've studied it a little bit, and I come back to I don't want to dumb down the Southeastern Conference to be a part of some super league notion with 70 teams that some people speculate would happen. They want to be us, and that's on them to figure it out, not on me to bring myself back to Earth.” Sankey also talked a bit about a potential House settlement: “We have to deal with litigation, so there’s a settlement that would allow — if it’s approved by the court — some oversight of name, image and likeness activity and some institutional opportunities to provide economic support to student-athletes. We still have state laws. We have state attorney generals who have filed some lawsuits that limit transfer regulation and have limited NIL oversight. That puts you into this congressional conversation. Congress is a place where you can set a national standard so we can have Final Fours, College World Series and College Football Playoffs. Without a national standard, I think that’s going to become more difficult. Our student-athletes are saying, ‘I just want to know that when I cross the line of scrimmage for somebody, they’re held to the same set of standards I’m held to.’ I think that’s a fair ask. Because some of these stories that we’ve seen over the last few weeks indicate that promises were made that weren’t fulfilled. There’s no protection for a young person in this system. They have no idea the credibility of the so-called ‘agent representative’. Those are not healthy environments.” (link, link)

Tarleton State President James Hurley joins Higher Ed Athletics’ Travis Smith to discuss, among other topics, the Texans AD search earlier this year and how he addresses athletics with the broader campus community. On the latter, “One of the things that I often share with my faculty and staff, and they appreciate my sentiment [...] Athletics will never be the most important endeavor we embark upon at a university. [...] The issue for all of us is athletics is the most visible, and it brings the most visibility to your institution. It brings the most both positive and negative. And so you have to prepare for that. You have to prepare for the highs and lows of a given athletic season and within a program. And you’re also basing the emotions of a fan base and alumni base on roughly, let’s say 18 to 22 year olds, right? And so that makes it even more complex, and the fact that the NCAA is literally changing every single day, I almost hold my breath when I have a chance.” Hurley explains priorities for the new Athletics boss included understanding of the current complexities of intercollegiate athletics, knowledge of the Texas landscape and valuing the student-athlete experience. Following then-candidate now-AD Steve Uryasz’s interviews, the committee “just fell in love with his leadership, his ability to fundraise, but also his experience leading an FBS program. And I’m sure you know, we have aspirations at some point to continue our growth and trajectory, and we feel like we’re in a perfect position to be the next FBS institution in the country.” Lots more; come for the wisdom, stay for the D1.ticker shout out at the 29:55 mark. Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek is pushing to generate another $500K for the Arkansas Edge Collective & has dangled a carrot in front of Razorbacks fans: The “beloved Slobbering Hog logo” will be center court logo at Bud Walton Arena this season if the goal can be reached by 5pm on Saturday. Appalachian State AD Doug Gillin updates the Mountaineers fanbase post-Hurricane Helene. Of note: “We are grateful to report that all student-athletes and athletics staff have been accounted for and are safe. Some have lost their homes. Many are without power, water and cell service, and have experienced damage to their property and possessions. [...] Fall sport teams have sporadically resumed practice and competition, with schedules being altered as needed to practice or play away from Boone or to reschedule home events for later dates. Football is preparing for its upcoming trip to Marshall this weekend. There has been damage sustained at some facilities, most notably Varsity Gym and the Holmes Convocation Center. Damage assessment and cleanup began immediately and are ongoing.” (link)

The D1.dossier for the AD opening at Fordham is now ready for those of you interested in leading the Rams. San Diego AD Kimya Massey: “D1.dossiers was a great tool for the process, really allowing me to obtain a strong sense of what the mission and values of the institution were as well as if they aligned with my values. It also gave me a wider perspective on how the budget was formulated, staff size and retention and the past and current success of the programs. I really appreciated the in-depth information regarding the campus structure and organization as well. I’d highly recommend reviewing the dossiers going into the interview to best prepare yourself for not only the questions you will answer but also to ensure that you are truly committed to the job and feel you have a strong pulse on whether or not you can be successful in this position.” (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit updates on the path of former MBB-FBI center point Christian Dawkins, who is now back on college campuses, including Louisville of all places, in his role as Partner & CEO of sports & entertainment agency Seros Partners. Dawkins was recently in the Derby City alongside prized 2025 recruit Mikel Brown Jr. & tells Libit: “It shows what happened in 2017 was all a crock of s—t, basically.” Dawkins goes on to say the company’s representation roster, along with student-athletes from his Combine Academy, will generate over $15M this year in NIL monies. Lots more in the article, including this from Dawkins in closing: “I don’t begrudge anybody, because it’s business. There’s no permanent enemies in business, and there are no permanent friends.” (link)

UTRGV AD Chasse Conque joins D1.ticker/Connect's Kristen Eargle to discuss how the Rally the Valley Campaign has galvanized the fan base, encouraged donor engagement and helped to build a culture. Conque also outlines the process of adding DI football, from passing student fees, building infrastructure, and hiring a head coach. Conque talks about preparing for change without having control of what’s changing. “Control what you can control. Control the controllables. I feel like we’ve been saying that since the pandemic in 2020 and it certainly translates and is applicable to all the changes that we’re facing today. We want to make sure that everything that we can get our arms around, the things that we can control – the experience that we can provide and still the tried-and-trues of college athletics, the fan engagement, the unity, the pride and the passion, the pageantry of college athletics – those are things that we celebrate at UTRGV and that’s what it’s about is unifying a community and taking care of young people and seeing them have success. And that’s oversimplifying it obviously. We know there’s a lot of change we’ve already endured and a lot of changes coming, but you just try to position yourself the best that you can and we always figure it out. As an industry we’ve always figured it out.” More on Connect. (link)

For the first time in program history, South Carolina Women’s Basketball season tickets are sold out as the Gamecocks announced a record 13,046 of the 18K Colonial Life Arena capacity are accounted for. The remaining 4,954 tickets will be sold on a single-game basis beginning Oct. 14. HC Dawn Staley: “When I first came to South Carolina, I didn’t really imagine what the fanbase would look like, but what the people in this community, this state have done to uplift our program is beyond my wildest dreams.” (link)

Lions athletics raised a record-breaking $4.51M on Columbia Giving Day, surpassing its previous record of $4.13M set in 2018. Athletics posted a total of 5,314 gifts on the day, which was the most of any school or department within the University. Other highlights from the department: athletics represented 38% of gifts made across the University; 10 varsity sport programs raised at least $100K; and seven sport programs broke their record for most gifts on Giving Day. The tally is now four, as Utah State joins the group of schools forfeiting games to San José State volleyball this season. Utah Governor Spencer Cox: “I stand with the students, coaches and leadership at @SUUtbirds and @USUAggies in their decision to forgo their women’s volleyball matches against San José State. It is essential that we preserve a space for women to compete fairly and safely. Our female athletes are left grappling with this difficult issue because the NCAA has failed in its responsibility to protect female athletes and women’s sports. It’s time for the NCAA to take this seriously and protect our female student athletes.” (link)

The SAFE Bet Act introduced by Representative Paul Tonko (D-NY) and Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), if passed, would prohibit gambling broadcast ads between 8 AM and 10 PM, ban gambling ads during live sporting events, ban ads that could induce gambling, eliminate prop bets and block marketing tactics towards ineligible or problem players. Sportico’s Michael McCann believes Congressional action “increasingly appears overdue,” as various leagues have encountered athletes gambling on games, the financial impact on the public and more. The Public Health Advocacy Institute in a statement: “We have known for more than 10 years that gambling is an addictive product and gambling disorder is an addiction similar to heroin, opioids, tobacco, alcohol and cocaine. With every other addictive product, the government seeks to regulate advertising, distribution, and consumption. With online sports gambling, the exact opposite is occurring as the gambling industry and its sports partners encourage people to bet on every micro-event within each game.” More. (link)

Realignment Rumblings…
+ Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger: “The Pac-12 needs one more full member to reach FBS qualification. The expectation is that the league will explore media rights packages with its current 8 members before adding more schools at a later date. No serious negotiations currently happening, per those with knowledge.” (link)
+ CBS’ Brandon Marcello: “The evaluation, led by sports and entertainment consulting firm Navigate, could last until the end of the year. It will be conducted with multiple hypothetical lineups and membership possibilities as the conference attempts to outline all possibilities and potential revenue growth within the reformed league, which is set to launch in July 2026.” (link)
+ JohnCanzano.com’s namesake goes deeper on developments over the past week-plus: “(Memphis) Athletic Director Ed Scott sprung into damage-control mode and told reporters that he didn’t believe the Pac-12’s offer ‘was a good one.’ He said that the schools had only ‘hours’ to make a decision and had “no time to counter.” Scott was trying to manage the messaging and his fan base. He said: ‘That was not a binary decision. That was not a, ‘No, we’re not ever going anywhere.’ That was based on the offer that was presented in front of us.’ Scott left the door ajar. He also annoyed some Pac-12 stakeholders. Said one: “How did he manage to piss off both sides?’” [...] This is now a beauty pageant. Who wins the last spot (or three)? And at what price? The Pac-12 is carefully evaluating, ‘but not waiting around,’ as one source told me.” More. (link)

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey was on The Triple Option today & touched on the upcoming SEC-Big Ten meeting next week: “Tony (Pettiti) is someone who I knew from his work at CBS. [...] He reached out to me pretty early on. Part of my observations relative to our meetings. [...] If we can set a direction that we can agree on, others will have an opportunity to participate and follow. [...] It’s not as if we’re going to unilaterally change the world in an Athletic Directors meeting. But, we do need to talk about issues around legal settlements to the extent we’re permitted to. [...] There was a report before we recorded this podcast - nobody called me - that we’re going to have a scheduling agreement. Well we’ve played basketball challenges with people. Should we be talking about those things? Certainly. [...] Tony and I have talked about how playing rules are made. We’ve talked about how decisions are made in the NCAA and one of my learning lessons over the last decade is we have enormous challenges in front of college sports, enormous opportunities and enormous support, but we’re not going to meet the challenges in front of us in big rooms filled with people, which is kind of the NCAA way. There’s so much disparity among the programs. The ability to move from the way we’ve always done things to the way we’re going to need to do things is accelerating rapidly and that causes us to narrow the conversation a bit. What we want to do is bring people into that conversation eventually, but it starts with, ‘Can the two conferences come together around some common thoughts?’” (link)

More from UNLV AD Erick Harper as he talks to ESPN’s Max Olson and Kyle Bonagura about the Rebels’ recent turn in the national spotlight, notably about how Pac-12 negotiations played out. Having found out about the initial four Mountain West schools’ departure via social media, and, subsequently, that metrics were a reason for UNLV’s exclusion, Harper queries: “What are the metrics? Based on what I understand, we are a Research 1 institution. We've got some recent success in football performance. We sit in a top-40 market. We have donor support, we have community support. We're in the sports and entertainment capital of the world. Explain to me how some of those other schools can compare? If we try to read between the lines, the message I got is we're not good enough. I'm sorry, but I do believe we are.” Harper also says criticism of the school’s decision to remain with the MW, despite the Pac-12 circling back to them, is unwarranted: “If I could release all the financials, everybody would understand more of our decision. There's a lot that still needs to play out, but it's kind of interesting how the Memphis AD said [the Pac-12's offer] was a bad deal for them. I think at this point that's probably about all I would say. Yeah, overall complexity of the deal and all the evaluation, it wasn't a good deal once you look at the now, the middle and the future. It didn't make sense.” As for the realignment talk happening concurrently with the football program’s first-ever AP Top 25 appearance and former QB Matthew Sluka making NIL headlines: “It's been good in the sense that we wanted to be on the national scene. We got there, we just didn't know it'd all be in one week.” (link)

Having shifted to a two-year selection process, the NCAA unveiled 240+ host sites for preliminary and final rounds of predetermined championships across all three divisions for 2026-27 and 2027-28. SVP of Championships Lynda Tealer indicates the association “incorporated more data into the process” and will seek feedback on the appropriate cadence of the selection process. (link)

Playfly Sports Properties President Christy Hedgpeth chats with SBJ’s Ben Portnoy about questions from partners given the changing landscape and the company’s positioning: “We're really trying to redefine what a [multimedia rights] partner is, what a ticketing partner is. […] We will continue to really focus on being valuable for our current partners. But also at this time of tumultuous change in the college space, clearly more and more schools are looking for commercialization, and that's really what we thrive on. That's what we're going to look to bring to partners and to expand our portfolio.” Hedgpeth says the top questions beyond growing commercialization are NIL and new inventory, namely on-field logos. Asked what industry storylines she is following: “It's very clear that this is a time for transformation of how colleges approach the business side. […] The athletic departments that are willing to really work with their constituents and take a hard look at, ‘How are we really commercializing our IP and our rights? Are we set up in the right way? Are we being assertive enough?’ [They] are going to be very well positioned. Change is always fraught, but we're seeing the schools that are willing to really examine their processes, their people, their structure, their approach, their categories and how their assets are going to be best positioned to compete in the future. And that's, frankly, what's important for a lot of schools is to have a broad-based athletic program and to be competitive across sports. That's something that does directly tie to the commercial optimization piece as well.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown chats with Ole Miss Asst. AD of Ticket Operations Katie Wisdom about how the Rebels are handling the desire for physical tickets in an increasingly digital ticketing world. With 85-90% of tickets now mobile, Ole Miss offers fans the option to print out a game ticket at the event for a fee and a collectible physical ticket through a partnership with WW&L. Brown notes: “This is not a magic bullet that will solve revenue problems…but if done with intentionality, it can be another tool to drive revenue in multiple ways. Wisdom told me that while sales have been very strong this year, revenue was modest for the first few years that Ole Miss offered physical ticket printing. But with the expected success of the Ole Miss football team this season (last weekend’s upset against Kentucky notwithstanding), the school is hopeful about not just the revenue growth potential, but the potential to use the tickets to drive other forms of engagement. If Ole Miss were to hypothetically win a big game on the road, well, the school can still print commemorative tickets for the event, and that offering can go in the fundraising email that the department would otherwise send out to try and capitalize on the momentum. Other schools told me they could see physical ticket printing potentially being used as a fundraiser for a collective or NIL activity (look, these tickets were signed by the guy that caught the touchdown pass!), or as lagniappe to help encourage other donor engagement or activity.” (link)
