+ Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger: “The Pac-12 needs one more full member to reach FBS qualification. The expectation is that the league will explore media rights packages with its current 8 members before adding more schools at a later date. No serious negotiations currently happening, per those with knowledge.” (link)

+ CBS’ Brandon Marcello: “The evaluation, led by sports and entertainment consulting firm Navigate, could last until the end of the year. It will be conducted with multiple hypothetical lineups and membership possibilities as the conference attempts to outline all possibilities and potential revenue growth within the reformed league, which is set to launch in July 2026.” (link)

+ JohnCanzano.com’s namesake goes deeper on developments over the past week-plus: “(Memphis) Athletic Director Ed Scott sprung into damage-control mode and told reporters that he didn’t believe the Pac-12’s offer ‘was a good one.’ He said that the schools had only ‘hours’ to make a decision and had “no time to counter.” Scott was trying to manage the messaging and his fan base. He said: ‘That was not a binary decision. That was not a, ‘No, we’re not ever going anywhere.’ That was based on the offer that was presented in front of us.’ Scott left the door ajar. He also annoyed some Pac-12 stakeholders. Said one: “How did he manage to piss off both sides?’” [...] This is now a beauty pageant. Who wins the last spot (or three)? And at what price? The Pac-12 is carefully evaluating, ‘but not waiting around,’ as one source told me.” More. (link)

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey was on The Triple Option today & touched on the upcoming SEC-Big Ten meeting next week: “Tony (Pettiti) is someone who I knew from his work at CBS. [...] He reached out to me pretty early on. Part of my observations relative to our meetings. [...] If we can set a direction that we can agree on, others will have an opportunity to participate and follow. [...] It’s not as if we’re going to unilaterally change the world in an Athletic Directors meeting. But, we do need to talk about issues around legal settlements to the extent we’re permitted to. [...] There was a report before we recorded this podcast - nobody called me - that we’re going to have a scheduling agreement. Well we’ve played basketball challenges with people. Should we be talking about those things? Certainly. [...] Tony and I have talked about how playing rules are made. We’ve talked about how decisions are made in the NCAA and one of my learning lessons over the last decade is we have enormous challenges in front of college sports, enormous opportunities and enormous support, but we’re not going to meet the challenges in front of us in big rooms filled with people, which is kind of the NCAA way. There’s so much disparity among the programs. The ability to move from the way we’ve always done things to the way we’re going to need to do things is accelerating rapidly and that causes us to narrow the conversation a bit. What we want to do is bring people into that conversation eventually, but it starts with, ‘Can the two conferences come together around some common thoughts?’” (link)

More from UNLV AD Erick Harper as he talks to ESPN’s Max Olson and Kyle Bonagura about the Rebels’ recent turn in the national spotlight, notably about how Pac-12 negotiations played out. Having found out about the initial four Mountain West schools’ departure via social media, and, subsequently, that metrics were a reason for UNLV’s exclusion, Harper queries: “What are the metrics? Based on what I understand, we are a Research 1 institution. We've got some recent success in football performance. We sit in a top-40 market. We have donor support, we have community support. We're in the sports and entertainment capital of the world. Explain to me how some of those other schools can compare? If we try to read between the lines, the message I got is we're not good enough. I'm sorry, but I do believe we are.” Harper also says criticism of the school’s decision to remain with the MW, despite the Pac-12 circling back to them, is unwarranted: “If I could release all the financials, everybody would understand more of our decision. There's a lot that still needs to play out, but it's kind of interesting how the Memphis AD said [the Pac-12's offer] was a bad deal for them. I think at this point that's probably about all I would say. Yeah, overall complexity of the deal and all the evaluation, it wasn't a good deal once you look at the now, the middle and the future. It didn't make sense.” As for the realignment talk happening concurrently with the football program’s first-ever AP Top 25 appearance and former QB Matthew Sluka making NIL headlines: “It's been good in the sense that we wanted to be on the national scene. We got there, we just didn't know it'd all be in one week.” (link)

Having shifted to a two-year selection process, the NCAA unveiled 240+ host sites for preliminary and final rounds of predetermined championships across all three divisions for 2026-27 and 2027-28. SVP of Championships Lynda Tealer indicates the association “incorporated more data into the process” and will seek feedback on the appropriate cadence of the selection process. (link)

Playfly Sports Properties President Christy Hedgpeth chats with SBJ’s Ben Portnoy about questions from partners given the changing landscape and the company’s positioning: “We're really trying to redefine what a [multimedia rights] partner is, what a ticketing partner is. […] We will continue to really focus on being valuable for our current partners. But also at this time of tumultuous change in the college space, clearly more and more schools are looking for commercialization, and that's really what we thrive on. That's what we're going to look to bring to partners and to expand our portfolio.” Hedgpeth says the top questions beyond growing commercialization are NIL and new inventory, namely on-field logos. Asked what industry storylines she is following: “It's very clear that this is a time for transformation of how colleges approach the business side. […] The athletic departments that are willing to really work with their constituents and take a hard look at, ‘How are we really commercializing our IP and our rights? Are we set up in the right way? Are we being assertive enough?’ [They] are going to be very well positioned. Change is always fraught, but we're seeing the schools that are willing to really examine their processes, their people, their structure, their approach, their categories and how their assets are going to be best positioned to compete in the future. And that's, frankly, what's important for a lot of schools is to have a broad-based athletic program and to be competitive across sports. That's something that does directly tie to the commercial optimization piece as well.” (link) 

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown chats with Ole Miss Asst. AD of Ticket Operations Katie Wisdom about how the Rebels are handling the desire for physical tickets in an increasingly digital ticketing world. With 85-90% of tickets now mobile, Ole Miss offers fans the option to print out a game ticket at the event for a fee and a collectible physical ticket through a partnership with WW&L. Brown notes: “This is not a magic bullet that will solve revenue problems…but if done with intentionality, it can be another tool to drive revenue in multiple ways. Wisdom told me that while sales have been very strong this year, revenue was modest for the first few years that Ole Miss offered physical ticket printing. But with the expected success of the Ole Miss football team this season (last weekend’s upset against Kentucky notwithstanding), the school is hopeful about not just the revenue growth potential, but the potential to use the tickets to drive other forms of engagement. If Ole Miss were to hypothetically win a big game on the road, well, the school can still print commemorative tickets for the event, and that offering can go in the fundraising email that the department would otherwise send out to try and capitalize on the momentum. Other schools told me they could see physical ticket printing potentially being used as a fundraiser for a collective or NIL activity (look, these tickets were signed by the guy that caught the touchdown pass!), or as lagniappe to help encourage other donor engagement or activity.” (link)

Texas A&M-Commerce brought in record revenue of more than $1.3M in FY24, with fundraising up 148% to over $680K. Men’s and Women’s Basketball ticket revenue jumped 80% year-over-year, with Softball tripling its revenue and Football up 18%. (link)

George Washington officially launches the Tanya Vogel Endowed Scholarship Fund to honor its former AD, who stepped away from leading the department back in August 2023 after nearly six years at the helm. Created in August 2024, the fund has already raised more than $100K with the money slated to provide an annual scholarship benefiting a GW student-athlete. (link)

Maryland announces the opening of The Maryland Club for the upcoming 2024-25 Men’s & Women’s basketball seasons. In partnership with Legends and designed by CORE architecture + design, The Maryland Club will debut to the public on Nov. 4 as the Terrapins host Manhattan and serve as “an all-inclusive premium club on basketball game days, providing an elevated bar, dining and social experience. [...] On non-game days, the Maryland Club will serve as an exclusive private social club, showcasing a refined bar, elegant dining room, upscale lounges, private event spaces, and collaborative workspaces.” In addition, UM also highlighted the creation of a new 200-seat club seating section that will include exclusive access to The Maryland Club, in-seat food and beverage service and high-back padded chairs with side tables. The BIG EAST rolled out its 2024-25 MBB television coverage, including its tournament semis and championship on FOX, 18+ games on FOX’s broadcast networks, 80+ games on FS1, one double-header on CBS, 20 games on CBS Sports Network, two games on NBC and 25 games plus its tournament first round and two quarterfinals match-ups on Peacock. Following this week’s quarterly reports that saw revenue fall 10% year over year and the stock price drop by seven percent in after-hours trading, Nike has withdrawn its full-year forecast. With the addition of new CEO Elliott Hill, Nike will move to quarterly guidance and expects revenue to fall eight to ten percent in the current quarter, with orders for spring 2025 delivery flat compared to 2024. + Yahoo’s Pete Thamel reports, “Texas State’s talks with the Mountain West have stalled. The school has informed the Sun Belt that it won’t be going to the Mountain West. Texas State received a verbal offer over the weekend.” (link)

+ Gonzaga AD Chris Standiford on Action Network’s Brett McMurphy reporting last week that the Zags were headed to the Pac-12: “Not even close. It was a super frustrating tweet. It ends up being accurate, right? Good for him, he stood by it. He knew a helluva lot more than I did, because not only did I not know fully where the Pac-12 was in the process, but I didn’t know where we were. So, apparently he’s Nostradamus.” (link)

+ Some financial details of UTEP’s transition to the Mountain West: “UTEP's television deal with Conference USA is estimated to be worth $400,000, and its TV deal with the Mountain West will be worth an estimated $4 million.” (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde looks into the crystal ball on the upcoming SEC-Big Ten meeting in Nashville next week: “The most ridiculous aspect of all this is that the SEC and Big Ten don’t need to legislate an advantage into the playoff format. They’re going to get the most teams in, almost every year. There may be the rare occasion when the ACC or Big 12 is worthy of three or more bids each, but if the current selection process holds then the Big Ten and SEC regularly will get seven or more bids. The fact they don’t trust themselves or the system enough to let it play out more fairly is a telling commentary on the lust for control. Don’t earn it on the field, write it into the rules. And so the stranglehold is poised to get tighter.” (link); Here’s how On3’s Andy Staples sees it: “Given everything that’s happened in the past four years and everything on the horizon, it’s possible we’re going to watch the Big Ten and SEC steamroll their way to whatever they want. They have all the leverage now. But before they settle on their platform for negotiations with the other leagues, they need to see exactly how much you can stomach.” (link)

The Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Mick Akers writes on UNLV’s plans to reduce its $21M budget deficit. Here are the moving parts: 1) “The planned annual payments of up to $1.8 million for six years are expected to come from poaching fees the Pac-12 could have to pay the Mountain West for luring the five schools to the conference”; 2) “Last year UNLV launched a campaign looking to raise $150 million in capital, to which $11.8 million was raised in fiscal year 2024. The target is to raise $15 million annually, which UNLV for fiscal year 2025 has received $3 million in cash and $12 million in pledge”; 3) “UNLV also anticipates a $2.4 [million] waterfall payment from the Las Vegas Stadium Authority, to make up any lost revenue tied to using Allegiant Stadium and no longer being able to utilize Sam Boyd Stadium”; 4) Football season ticket sales are 110% more than the budgeted projection; and, 5) “The school also plans to reduce expenses by up to 10 percent and to fill only essential open positions within the athletic department. Those cuts will be solely focused on administration and not relating to spending gouging toward student-athletes, with the department looking to cut administration-related travel expenses.” (link)

CollegeAD reports contract information for new UMass Lowell AD Lynn Coutts: Four-year pact that runs through August of 2028 at a base pay rate of $270K annually with a $12K per year vehicle stipend. If the university makes a change without cause, Coutts would be owed 50% of the remaining contract value. If Coutts chooses to exit before the conclusion of the third year of the deal she’d owe 50%, after the third year reduces to 25%. (link)

National Labor Relations Board Counsel Thomas Quigley has filed a motion asking for a summary judgment in its case against Dartmouth, saying the university has essentially refused to negotiate. Sportico’s Michael McCann: “If the board grants Quigley’s motion and orders Dartmouth to bargain, Dartmouth would likely petition a federal court for review, thus commencing a legal process that could eventually land at the U.S. Supreme Court. If the board denies the motion, the situation would continue with Dartmouth, waiting for the board to decide if it will consider its appeal, not bargaining with the union, which demands bargaining. Eventually the matter will be heard in the courts, but how long it takes to get there will be impacted by how long the controversy stays with the NLRB.” (link)

Wyoming joins Boise State and Southern Utah in forfeiting a volleyball match against San José State this season. The Cowgirls were scheduled to play the Spartans this weekend but announced yesterday: “After a lengthy discussion, the University of Wyoming will not play its scheduled conference match against San Jose State University in the UniWyo Sports Complex.” (link)

SBJ’s Ben Portnoy writes on Collegiate Sports Connect’s latest evolution - Connect 2.0, which increased its Talent Finder database to 20,000 administrators & support staff - as company Co-Founder & Collegiate Sports Associates President Drew Turner remarks: “What most athletics departments do and still do to this day, is they lose somebody; they post the job online; they call three or four of their buddies and they say, ‘Hey, send me some good names;’ and that's the extent of their recruiting philosophy We had some time to brainstorm and the end result from the search firm's perspective of what we wanted to create was a more proactive strategy towards recruitment.” WMT Chief Innovation Officer Chris Freet: “If you've been in one of those lobbies at a professional conference, that was the initial vision. Former North Carolina Chancellor Holden Thorp writes about the “post-Presidential era” for the Chronicle, arguing that “outside forces — donors, trustees, politicians — are making the decisions now. The president is mostly a facilitator of that vision. Whether that person is an academic or not matters less than ever. [...] If they didn’t conform, they’d be replaced by someone who would. And they need political allies; there’s simply too much potential trouble to run universities without powerful supporters. While the ugliest ideas in American politics are behind many of these changes, presidents who call that out are not going to survive very long.” On his view of the current state of affairs: “This is admittedly a jaded vision. But we have every reason to be cynical. I believe that in time the pendulum will swing back. And that will happen when higher education as a whole convinces the country that it’s a force for good.” (link)

Pacific Northwest business leader and Oregon State alumnus Joth Ricci, his wife Robin and family have made a $3M gift to support the Beavers men's and women's basketball programs. The family's gift establishes two $1.5M endowed funds with the OSU Foundation that will generate expendable resources for the two programs in perpetuity. (link)

Speaking on what would have been former Dartmouth Football HC Buddy Teevens’s 68th birthday, President Sian Leah Beilock announced a new center and a suite of programs honoring the late football coach that will benefit all students. Beilock: “Buddy had a passion for helping student-athletes discover their best selves and perform at the highest levels possible, on and off the field. We will carry his life-long commitment forward through the new Teevens Center by sparking collaboration, research, and innovation for the benefit of young people nationally.” Per the release, “The most ambitious component of the multi-faceted endeavor in Teevens’s memory is a new center that will extend elements of the Department of Athletics and Recreation’s Dartmouth Peak Performance program to all undergraduates and bring even greater collaboration across campus and with thought leaders around the world to the field of student mental health, wellness, and performance.” Dartmouth is looking for 25 lead investors to commit $1M or more toward each vision of enhancing the mental and physical performance of all students. Seventeen donors have already committed to this Teevens Center Founders Circle. Additionally, Dartmouth will rededicate its historic stadium as Buddy Teevens Stadium at Memorial Field on Friday, October 4. (link)

The Tampa Bay Times’ Matt Baker provides the latest on Georgia Football student-athlete and former Florida signee Jaden Rashada’s lawsuit over an unfulfilled NIL deal. The defendants, including Gators’ HC Billy Napier and former UF Director of Player Engagement Marcus Castro-Walker, filed separate motions to dismiss last week. The crux of the argument is that, without a signed agreement, nothing is official, with Castro-Walker’s filing stating: “Opening the doors of the federal courthouse to every college football player seeking injunctive relief or specific performance of an ‘oral contract’ when their dream doesn’t materialize would only lead to a class of plaintiffs larger than any mass tort action on record.” The motions also accuse Rashada of being upset about passing on a reported near-eight-figure offer from Miami (FL) and now attempting to recoup lost income despite not having any legal recourse. A court date has yet to be set. (link)

Wake County Superior Court Judge Graham Shirley made the decision yesterday to reverse the North Carolina State Board of Education policy and will instead allow high school student-athletes at public schools in the state of North Carolina to profit off their NIL. Tuesday’s ruling came as part of a lawsuit brought by the family of Tennessee commit Faizon Brandon of Grimsley High School. (link)
