“We’ve got to let this thing play out, see where it goes and then have some thoughtful conversation to follow. One thing is for sure. Fans don’t want an artificial championship. They want a real championship just like every other sport. There are no free passes. Let’s earn it.” That’s Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark to the Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte before last night’s Houston-TCU kick on potential expansion of the College Football Playoff. More: “Obviously, the format currently rewards the five highest-ranked conference champions, and I think that’s great because in a conference like ours it keeps the excitement all season long. But beyond that, those at-large (spots), let’s earn them. That’s how I feel. But that being said we should have thoughtful conversation after this year, and we’ll see where it goes.” (link)

USCHO.com’s Jim Connelly reports: “The NCAA Division I Council is scheduled to take up a recommendation to adopt emergency legislation that would eliminate the prohibition on major junior players in NCAA hockey, according to a source. The council meets on Tuesday and Wednesday.” Connelly also adds a key note: “It is not clear how quickly the legislation changing NCAA rules would take effect.” (link)

Over in College Station, Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts was on set with the SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum as the pair covered a couple of items. On the transition from the football booth to the AD chair: “I didn’t grow up through the traditional ranks of college athletics directors. I had never been to a NACDA meeting in my life. I didn’t understand any of that. But, I had the privilege of working in a really tough job before my time at Nebraska, at Nebraska Omaha that suffered some real financial challenges. So, I had to reach out to some of the business leaders in that Omaha community that taught me a lot about finances and business and how to make decisions. [...] I’ve been around a lot of really great leaders, including Tom Osborne, and I’ve tried to learn a little bit from every one of them.” (link)

Georgia Football HC Kirby Smart’s new 10-year, $130M contract runs through the end of the 2033 season and is fully guaranteed if he were terminated without cause through the end of 2028. After that, it’s 85% guaranteed. Smart earned $10.5M last year and under his previous pact would have made $10.75M this year. His new deal, at $13M per year, makes him the highest-paid public school coach in college athletics. His bonus structure now goes from $1.525M to $1.775M, with participation in a first-round CFP game worth $250K, a quarterfinal appearance is worth $500K, making it to the semis would get him $750K, playing for the title yields $850K and winning it all would pay him $1.25M. Making it to the SEC title game is worth $100K while winning it comes with a $200K payday. If Smart resigns on or before December 31, 2026, he owes $5M, before the end of 2029 he owes $4M, with annual $1M decreases each of the following two years and he would owe $1M if he exits on or before the end of 2033. ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg catches up with a number of Football head coaches to discuss in-game helmet communications through the early part of the season. Louisville HC Jeff Brohm: “If you don't want people to know what you're doing, the communication on both sides of the ball can be effective. The NFL has done it forever since I played, so I think it should have happened a long time ago. I'm all for anything that helps the game be played with more integrity.” Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer: “You've got to give them the calls and help them out, but you want to make sure they can also play fast and aren't thinking too much.” Virginia Tech’s Brent Pry: “I told them, 'Listen, this has to be organic. I don't want anything force-fed for you guys or our players. The one thing I do know is it gives both sides of the ball a better chance to be lined up, make adjustments and have good awareness before the ball is snapped.” Cal’s Justin Wilcox advocates for expanding the technology: “You can't huddle on defense if the offense is going to snap the ball. With the signals and all came up in the past year, especially, but has been going on a long time, just give everybody a green dot, so all the players can hear the coach, and off we go.” An unnamed coach notes the reality of comms shutting off at the 15-second mark of the play clock: “The real work doesn't even start til after 15 seconds. The shifts, the motions, the checks, it starts after that. And then when a team is going so fast, it's hard to be able to communicate.” Lots more. (link)

Brenda Tracy has filed a defamation suit against former Michigan State Football HC Mel Tucker for unspecified damages. USA Today’s Kenny Jacoby: “Tracy says in the lawsuit that she lost future earnings and suffered psychologically and emotionally because of Tucker’s false statements, including his claims that she made up the allegations in a plot to extort him and the school for money. Among other counts, the lawsuit accuses him of breach of contract, stealing her business records and fraudulently accessing her email and personal accounts.“ No response from Tucker yet. (link)

ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura profiles Cal first-year grad student Miles Goodman, who unintentionally started the Calgorithm, “the overarching term that has come to define Cal's irreverent community of fans whose self-deprecating brand of internetting has generated fresh enthusiasm about the football program as it begins a new life in the ACC. Armed with basic photo- and video-editing skills, generative AI art tools and the desire to change the perception that people in Berkeley don't care about football, the Calgorithm is powered by a mix of longtime fans who use their real names and a larger group of mostly anonymous posters, known as ‘the burners.’ Their dedication played a contributing factor in the decision from ESPN's College GameDay to visit Cal this week for the first time.” More on the group’s creative and artistic spin on things that has led to a rise in popularity on X. Did you catch the new Dr Pepper Fansville ad featuring the Aflac duck which debuted yesterday? It came to fruition after Aflac CMO Garth Knutson thought of the idea last year. Knutson: “They sell soda, we sell supplemental health insurance—from a competition standpoint we couldn’t be further apart. But we’re both selling to a broad base of America, and we both choose college football as one of the ways we talk about our products.” Knutson, working with creative agency Dagger, put together a roughly 20-page pitch deck for Dr Pepper, a “tongue-in-cheek breakdown of the duck’s accomplishments in the 24 years that Aflac has been using it in ads.” He texted a low-res PDF of the deck, with no accompanying words or context, to Brian Mead at Dr Pepper’s in-house creative agency, Liquid Sunshine. Mead responded almost immediately “How can we make this happen?” More on how the ad came to be. (link)

The MAAC announced a new format is on the way for the 2025 Hercules Tires Men’s & Women’s Basketball Championships at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Starting in 2025, the field for both events will consist of only the league’s top-10 teams, marking the first time in the MAAC’s 44-year history that every conference team won’t be included. Competition over March 11-15 will get underway on Tuesday with a pair of men’s & women’s first round games pitting the No. 8 & 9 seeds and No. 7 and 10 seeds. That marks a significant format change as six games have been played on the opening day dating back to 2014. Quarterfinals will now be held on Wednesday & Thursday and semifinals on Friday before wrapping up action on Saturday by crowning both Men’s & Women’s champions. (link)

BYU will be the first college to utilize In-App Stories for its official BYU Cougars mobile application. WSC Sports’ In-App Stories offering allows sports organizations to insert the vertical video experience within owned and operated digital platforms, where fans can engage with content in a similar way to popular social media platforms.
"This content integration is the first of its kind in college athletics," said Tyson Hutchins, BYU associate athletic director for creative strategy. "We are passionate about providing as much content to Cougar Nation as possible, and this new integration and partnership with WSC Sports and WMT Digital provides an unmatched content experience.” (link)

In case you missed yesterday's Evening Standard...

West Virginia President Gordon Gee and Syracuse Chancellor Kent Syverud pen an op-ed in The Chronicle of Higher Education titled, “The Demise of College Sports as We Know Them,” on the heels of College Sports Tomorrow’s proposal for the College Student Football League, for which Gee and Syverud are ambassadors. On the industry, the pair write: “Our balkanized system of college football — the conference structure itself — is at the heart of the problem. Recent conference realignments have made the issue even worse, disrupting traditional rivalries — the heart and soul of college football — as well as diluting regional matchups and increasing cost and travel burdens for schools and student-athletes. Competitive balance has eroded, with the same few teams dominating every year. The introduction of name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights, increased use of the transfer portal, and lack of salary caps are exacerbating the divide and have the potential to bankrupt the entire system.” They believe two major scenarios will prevail in the “absence of a major rethinking” of football: an FBS implosion that would leave only 36 schools standing to afford House and NIL or a Big Ten/SEC super league. As an alternative, the CSFL would be owned by FBS schools and partner with a college football players’ association to directly pay student-athletes that would remain full-time students “with no union on campus. We believe this would protect football players whether the courts rule them to be employees or not. All other college sports would remain in the current conference system or return to their traditional geographic conferences and financially benefit from growing college-football ratings and engagement.” In closing: “We have made no commitment to CST or this exact approach. But as university presidents, we need to get back in the game and take responsibility for our future. We can’t rely on commissioners or Congress to do this. More engagement, urgency, and leadership are needed from all of us to breathe new life into college sports and create a sustainable new model that is steeped in the cherished traditions we all want to preserve.” (link)

Even more from SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey as he joined The Rich Eisen Show to discuss the latest on a potential House settlement and the state of the industry. In relation to House: “I do think what’s important from a Southeastern Conference perspective is we should be in control of our decision making. We shouldn't be farming that out to some third party or some other entity. And I think we collaborate well with our colleague conferences. But we shouldn't be looking for some magic solution from outside the influence area of college sports.” On the idea of a centralized commissioner or entity, Sankey believes the idea that such a structure that “would dictate policy that plays out equally across the country given the diversity that’s present in higher education, I don’t think is consistent with reality. I think it’s right to ask the question, but you have to think about people ceding authority to a centralized entity. […] It's just a really difficult proposition, and that's where I go back earlier as well to say our conference needs to make sure that we take responsibility for decision making in a really important time of change.” More. Add former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor to the growing list of erstwhile student-athletes filing NIL lawsuits as Pryor is suing the NCAA, OSU, the Big Ten and Learfield over what Boise State professor Sam Ehrlich writes is “antitrust and unjust enrichment.” Per the filing: “the Defendants have systematically and intentionally misappropriated the publicity rights and NIL of the Plaintiffs and those similarly situated and in doing so have reaped millions, and perhaps billions, of dollars from the Plaintiffs and the class. Meanwhile, the student-athletes themselves were not only prevented from capitalizing on their publicity rights, but were punished for doing so through the rules the NCAA forced upon them in order for them to participate. [...] Although the Plaintiff is no longer a student-athlete, the Defendants in this case continue to derive revenue from their NIL.” (link); Full complaint. (link)

Also involving the Buckeyes, sources tell NBC4’s Whitney Harding and Mark Feuerborn that Ohio State is reportedly eliminating scholarships for its men’s gymnastics squad. Despite the phasing out of scholarships, the program would plan to continue competition, while no details on the time frame for cuts were provided. The financial challenges on the collegiate sports horizon were cited by sources as the reason behind the decision, and the cuts reportedly may not stop with the men’s gymnastics program. (link)

New George Washington AD Michael Lipitz chats with GW Today’s Nick Erickson about leading the Revolutionaries and the industry. GW has engaged HOK to begin a facilities master plan, with Lipitz identifying a dedicated hoops performance center as the top facility priority. Asked about competing against Power 4 schools for recruits and retaining student-athletes: “One area where GW has an advantage is the value of the degree, which helps both retention and recruiting. GW offers a truly unique combination of elite academics and elite, A-10 athletics. Our student-athletes benefit from experiential learning and leadership development in the nation’s capital and one of the greatest global cities, which enhances their overall college experience. The ultimate goal is to excel both academically and athletically, and not every institution can do that effectively. Our ability to deliver both at an elite level is a significant competitive advantage for GW.” More. (link)

Georgia Tech rolls out its $500M Full Steam Ahead initiative, with almost $300M already raised, as part of the institution’s $2B Transforming Tomorrow campaign. The campaign includes seating, premium and video board upgrades at Bobby Dodd Stadium; a renovated Men’s Basketball locker room and basketball strength and conditioning areas at Zelnak Basketball Center; fan experience upgrades at O’Keefe Gym and more. AD J Batt: “As we progress towards our goal of returning Georgia Tech athletics to national prominence and competing for championships at the highest level of intercollegiate athletics, the philanthropic support of the Tech community is essential. Full Steam Ahead not only gives our incredible supporters the opportunity to help Tech athletics successfully navigate the next era of college sports, but also provides the opportunity to transform our facilities – especially Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field – into some of the very best in the nation.” (link)

The Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte updates on construction projects for the Cougars: “The Memorial Hermann Football Operations Center is at the halfway point of completion with 10 months of construction to go, according to an athletic spokesman. As was generally expected, alcohol sales for Nebraska football & volleyball games have received the green light with sales starting in the fall of 2025. Huskers AD Troy Dannen: “Alcohol sales have been successfully and safely implemented at Pinnacle Bank Arena and Haymarket Park in recent years. Our success in those venues with alcohol sales, combined with our recent and planned infrastructure upgrades, has informed us we are prepared to provide the same opportunity at Memorial Stadium, the Bob Devaney Sports Center, and our other facilities, beginning with the 2025-26 athletic season.” (link)

“If I’m being honest, it’s the women’s version of the Yankees. […] When you inspire greatness, or inspire this idea that women have the ability to be part of one of the greatest brands in sports,” she continued later, “I think that is something that is unequivocally an amazing opportunity.” That’s USC Women’s Basketball GM Amy Broadhead, who joined the Trojans last month after more than 15 years with major apparel brands. This year’s squad, with key returners from last year’s Elite Eight run and high-profile transfers, will raise the bar for the program. HC Lindsay Gottlieb: “I don’t want to be, status-quo. I don’t want to be just, think this is good enough. How do we build it?” In addition to a GM, Gottlieb’s push to be at the forefront includes having professional photography portfolios for student-athletes to present to NIL partners. Gottlieb: “I feel like it’s my duty and responsibility, not to tell them that money’s everything … but for female athletes, to have their four college years – or however many years they’re in college – be a time where they can parlay their platform into money. It’s like, ‘Let’s help them do that in a responsible and smart way.’” (link)

Oklahoma State Football HC Mike Gundy has taken his weekly coaches show on the road, setting up shop at Legacy Village, a retirement community located just four miles from Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater according to a feature by ESPN’s Eli Lederman. Boosted by rave reviews following a one-time holiday radio special held at the facility back in December 2023, and with the show searching for a permanent home after the end of a contract at the conclusion of the 2023 campaign, the leadership at Legacy Village was interested. The show’s now contracted to remain at Legacy Village through the 2026 season. Legacy Village Sales and Marketing Director Kristi Lester: "It used to just be game day Saturdays that would get people excited. But now you see it throughout the week. There's a true spirit. It's given [the residents] something new and meaningful to look forward to.” Student-athletes also gain an additional benefit from the unique set-up by receiving NIL payments for their weekly appearances. Gundy: It’s one of the best things we’ve ever done.” Learfield’s Cowboy Sports Properties played a key role in connecting the dots. (link)
