Extra Points purveyor Brown writes on the latest developments connected to the ASUN-WAC mashup: “Oliver Luck told me the DI Council is scheduled to discuss the issue again later this month, and that the WAC-ASUN plans to ask for a waiver [to the moratorium on single-sport conferences]. I’m not saying it’s impossible that the league gets that waiver, but right now, I think the smart money is that it won’t happen….at least this month. [...] I’m honestly still trying to better understand why administrators outside the ASUN/WAC are reluctant to grant a waiver. I’ve heard some industry people speculate that it may make more sense for the NCAA to deliver more clear guidelines about what it means to be FBS or FCS before opening the proverbial floodgates, and will certainly be pushback among FBS leaders if any FCS league tries to join FBS as a group. But I’ve also heard many an AD privately wonder if more regional, sport-specific conferences for Olympic sports would make more financial and logistical sense.” Brown goes on to note that the league’s current membership seems stable, “right this second” & that no individual member is an immediate FBS candidate, per sources. Lots more. (link)

In the latest Canzano and Wilner podcast, JohnCanzano.com’s namesake posits the Pac-12 doesn’t need to be in a hurry to expand beyond 11 teams. “I wouldn’t be surprised if the presidents and chancellors say [San Diego State] is the only no-brainer. We’re going to go to 11, and then let’s wait and see on SMU and the others, and maybe you wait for the next cycle. The wild card to me with SMU and others is what are those others willing to do to get in the conference? Are they willing to buy their way in? Are they willing to take no distributions in the first couple years? And then ultimately, the TV partners, isn’t that the vote that counts the most? If the TV partners say we want Dallas-Fort Worth or we want Colorado State to pair with Colorado, all of the sudden if you're the Pac-12, you’re sort of doing what TV wants you to do.” The Pac-12 Hotline’s Wilner points out that while SDSU is a “here and now,” SMU is more of a “longer play. What could SMU be in ‘28 and ‘29 with several years in the Pac-12? They’ve got a very wealthy donor base, private school, they can do whatever they want with their money. They’re like USC, they could just plow money into football, and they don’t have to care what anybody else thinks on campus. So, SMU is a longer-term play. It’s a chip for the late part of the decade when the Pac-12 is going to go back to the negotiating table.” Full podcast. (link)

Sportico’s McCann analyzes the antitrust lawsuit filed yesterday by Carolina Panthers/former Oklahoma State RB Hubbard and former Auburn track & field star McCarrell arguing Alston awards should have been paid to former student-athletes. Ole Miss was the first program to pay the awards, and McCann submits that the Rebels paying so soon after the Supreme Court’s decision suggests the plaintiffs may be right in their assertion that colleges would have paid before 2021 if given the choice. One defense the NCAA is likely to raise in Hubbard v. NCAA is that the student-athletes voluntarily accepted the conditions of NCAA eligibility. Another is that the plaintiffs’ argument is speculative: “that in an alternative universe, schools would have decided to pay these athletes.” (link)

The Athletic’s Deitsch sits down with the Boston Globe’s Finn and SBJ’s Karp to contextualize the LSU-Iowa WBB championship’s record viewership and the future of women’s basketball as a media property. Karp says he was prepared for the WBB title matchup to be a record, but “I did not see this high of a number coming. It is astronomical.” Looking ahead to next season, Karp asks: “What if instead of a men’s game, you’re putting on Iowa women’s basketball on a Saturday night, see if it competes with some of the men’s numbers you get. The evidence is clearly there. I would like to see Fox kind of experiment with that and see if they can draw an audience with a women’s game given the inventory they have. I think there’s some creative things you can do with the women’s game now.” Deitsch: “Do they sell the women’s tournament outright – which they’ll get $80M to $100M – or do they package it with the other stuff?” More. A group of Michigan State professors is petitioning the university to end its sponsorship with Caesars Sportsbook, writing, in part: “Taking a page from the stereotypical image of a drug pusher, Caesars and the other large online gambling companies lure customers with free bets worth hundreds of dollars. Young men tend to be eager recruits; being knowledgeable about sports leads many of them to assume they will be successful gamblers. … MSU has declined to comment for any of the news stories about university partnerships with sports betting companies. Declining to comment is a good idea, because our position is indefensible.” As of earlier this week, the petition had garnered 280 signatures. (link)

Sportsbooks in Connecticut were “bailed out” by their inability to accept wagers on the MBB national championship, per Action Network’s Rovell, who notes bettors in the state were not able to place wagers on teams affiliated with in-state universities, pursuant to state law. Rovell: “Fans in states with rooting interest disproportionately wager on their teams. Pennsylvania sportsbooks kept a whopping 35.2% of all money wagered within its state on the Super Bowl — an all-time hold percentage record for the big game — after the Eagles lost to the Chiefs. … While specific figures weren’t disclosed for Connecticut, the Action Network projected about $45M would have been won by in-state UConn basketball futures, factoring for betting data in other states.” (link)

ChatGPT opens the door to a four-day work week, according to Nobel Prize-winning economist Pissarides, who says: “I’m very optimistic that we could increase productivity. We could increase our well-being generally from work and we could take off more leisure. We could move to a four-day week easily. … There’s just no limit to how much work humanity could generate if they really want to work. It will take long to have a real impact and during that time people will adjust. What you need in this adjustment is basically upskilling.” (link)

The New York Post’s Marchand and SBJ’s Ourand discuss the health of NCAA MBB and WBB as media properties, and Ourand says of WBB: “I don’t see a path forward where they don’t take the women’s tournament out of that package and try to sell it on its own. And I can tell you ESPN wants to keep it, and there are plenty of other [bidders]. Can’t you see CBS and Turner deciding that would be a perfect complement to their men’s tournament as well? You can see NBC that wants to get in with the NBA wanting to be a part of it. My expectation is that there is going to be a lot of noise and a lot of bidders that are going to be crawling around trying to get this. We’ve been talking a lot about the NBA rights deal for good reason. This is another rights deal that’s going to be particularly important.” Full pod. (link)

On3 CEO Terry joins That SEC Podcast to discuss a number of topics. On the state of NIL: “The Rashada deal screwed everybody’s mind up. The reality is there haven’t been that many bad actors in NIL. There’s about an $85M collective marketplace going on right now that are for existing rosters. There’s about $15M for incoming freshmen. I see that number doubling [in Power 5 FB] 25% a year, but there is an efficient marketplace happening right now in college sports that will create more parity, more close competition, less chicanery than ever. […] By our data, 14% of collective dollars went to incoming recruits. … Every collective I’ve spoken to says they want that number to be 10%. … Every school in this roster-value world has a finite number they are managing to. I can afford one elite defensive end, but I can’t afford three. … It will be an efficient marketplace, and it’s happening. We don’t need feds to intervene, and we don’t need the NCAA to really do much.” Lots more from Terry. (link)

+ Oklahoma last week broke the NCAA’s single-game regular season softball attendance record when it defeated Texas in front of 8,930 fans at the USA Softball Hall of Fame Complex. The previous record was held by Fresno State, which drew 5,724 fans to a doubleheader against Arizona in 2000. (link)

Kansas MBB HC Self addresses the media for the first time since his health incident, noting first that he’s feeling good and his energy level is nearly back to where it had been and continues to improve. He then says: “I am 100% positive I will be coaching at the University of Kansas this upcoming season and hopefully many more after that.” Regarding this postseason, Self says his doctors informed him that if he coached the first-round game, there was a good chance he wouldn’t be able to coach the second game. Ultimately, the potential rise in blood pressure was a “major concern,” so coaching against Arkansas in the second round was also ruled out. Regarding the severity of the event, Self points out he was “never scared that I wasn’t going to be okay” but says it was a reminder that he very much wants to continue coaching and a wake-up call that he needs to change his lifestyle in order to do so. “I’m taking it serious for the first time in my life.” Full presser. Georgia was far and away the biggest spender on FB recruiting in 2022 at $4.5M. Clemson was next at $3.2M, followed by Texas A&M ($3M), Tennessee ($2.9M), Oklahoma ($2.6M), Texas ($2.4M), Alabama ($2.3M), Michigan ($2.2M), Oregon ($1.8M), and Florida and Rutgers ($1.6M). USA Today’s Sparks notes UGA’s recruiting budget was “at least double that of 45 of the 51 other public schools in Power 5 conferences.” Since 2017, the Bulldogs have spent an average of $2.75M on recruiting while no one else has averaged more than $1.91M. Overall among public schools in FY22, SEC programs spent an average of $1.75M, followed by the ACC ($1.27M), the Big 12 ($1.24M), the Big Ten ($1.19M) and the Pac-12 ($1.06M). Sparks: “The exclusion of successful programs at private schools like Southern Cal, Miami, Notre Dame and TCU skew the figures a little. But the SEC still reigns supreme, and that’s not surprising.” (link)

LSU WBB student-athlete Reese says she’s not interested in visiting the White House after First Lady Biden remarked that she’d also like to invite Iowa. “I remember she made a comment about both teams should be invited because it’s sportsmanship. And I’m like, ‘Are you saying that stuff because of what I did?’ Stuff like that, it bothers me. You are a woman at the end of the day and you’re supposed to be standing behind us before anything.” Biden later apologized, but Reese tells the I Am Athlete podcast: “I don’t accept the (apology). I said what I said. You can’t go back on certain things that you say. I mean, you felt like they should’ve came because of sportsmanship, right? They can have that spotlight. We’ll go to the Obamas. We’ll see Michelle.” Reese also revealed that LSU rejected Biden’s offer to visit the locker room before the game because President Biden didn’t pick LSU in his bracket. (link)

More NIL Today…
+ Stadium’s Goodman: “The new norm for multi-team events is going to be a way to bring in money for teams’ NIL. One MTE organizer said, ‘That’s the new way you do business. But it’s not uniform. Some ADs believe in doing it, others are fighting it.’” (link)
+ Former West Virginia FB student-athlete/NFL veteran Jones tells fellow Mountaineer/podcast host McAfee he’s working to improve WVU’s NIL situation. “We got money and we got a new AD. Mr. Baker is, I already had a chance to meet him while I was there, unbelievable guy, and talked about the different things that we're trying to do to get us back to the top. I just think this year with all the stuff I've learned the last month and a half, two months, we're rounding up funds to pay to play.” (link)

Quick Hits…
+ The felony assault charges against former Nebraska FB Interim HC Joseph have been dismissed after the accuser refused to testify. The Lincoln Journal Star’s Pilger notes, per a public defender, that “if a defendant doesn't have a significant history and the victim is uncooperative the case normally gets dismissed. In this case, prosecutors would've needed Mickey Joseph's accuser to testify that he impeded her breathing. Witnesses can't testify to that.” (link, link)
