Lengthy Q&A with Sacramento State AD Mark Orr on all the developments surrounding the Hornets. Of note: “Now's the time to build a stadium that's worthy of our community, that's worthy of our students and the stadium plan is for that first and foremost. Conference affiliation and FBS that's secondary to our students and to our community. The stadium has been a need for a long, long time. I'm very, very proud it's going to happen. It's going to happen no matter if we're playing Division III, Division I, high school, and it's going to happen for Sacramento State students and for our community. [...] I'll give you an example. San Diego State built one. Now there was 35,000 seats and theirs was just between 250 and $300 million at that at the end of the day. So, I'm not sure exactly where ours would fall. We're looking at 25,000. Again, we'll get to the schematics and getting to the details and have a number. [...] We're very proud members of the Big Sky Conference. We've been members for 26 years. We enjoy our partnership in competing against UC Davis and Montana. We play Eastern Washington here in football next weekend. So, we enjoy that membership. We are committed to investing in facilities and scholarships in name, image and likeness. We did a feasibility study which I know we released last week to show what we would need to do to compete as an FBS school. It laid out everything that we're investing in, you know, facilities and name image and likeness and scholarship. So, you know, our approach is let's focus on us, let's focus on our institution, let's focus on what's best for our student athletes and let's not try to predict what's going to happen in college athletics. We'll be prepared if there are opportunities for Sac State to consider, we'll be in a good position to be able to look at those opportunities.” More. (link)

Arizona State AD Graham Rossini comments on yesterday’s Committee on Infractions report involving the Sun Devils Football program: “We’re lucky to close the chapter on that particular moment. We’re moving forward on this next exciting chapter we’re at, not only in football but all of our sports. There’s value in the lessons learned. [...] There’s a lot of protections that have been put into place here over the last couple years. We’ve got a tremendous compliance team that led us through this process and we’re ready to close that chapter and keep it in the past and learn from those moments and focus on everything coming at us.” (link)

Illinois State orders a 2% end-of-fiscal-year spending cut for all of its school divisions, including the President’s office and Athletics, in order to avoid a general fund deficit. Vice President of Academic Affairs/Provost Ani Yazedjian recently outlined details of the cut in an email to university staff, citing numerous steps department heads could utilize to reduce spending including “engaging in discussions about the ‘most mission-critical parts’ of their operations, finding other cost-cutting opportunities, and identifying strategies to increase revenue for the university.” Yazedjian’s own department, the Division of Academic Affairs, is required to cut $3.16M in expenses, but has managed to locate $1.4M in cost savings already, meaning the Provost’s other units need only to reduce spending by 1.25%. Yazedjian: “I know it’s difficult to get our minds around this news when enrollment has grown for fall 2024, but this is precisely the time to act. [...] Be prepared to hear ‘no’ when asking for resources and don’t take it personally. We all have to keep the bigger picture in mind and work together to ensure the continued success of the institution.” (link)

Bradley’s total enrollment of approximately 4,800 students for the new academic year, down from 5,217 in 2023-24, marks the lowest total enrollment for the university since at least 1990 per WBCU’s Tim Shelley. This news comes as the university continues operating under a $13M deficit that led to last year’s elimination of 61 teaching positions and the phasing out of 15 academic programs. Those cuts resulted in student and faculty class walkouts as well the resignation of President Stephen Standifird, the eventual retirement of Provost Walter Zakahi and executive cabinet member turnover. Despite the turmoil, a university spokesperson stated that first-year enrollment remains relatively stable, down 2.5%, including traditional first-year undergrad students. (link)

Playfly CEO Craig Sloan talks with SBJ’s Austin Karp about the biggest issue in sports media: “It again goes back to a value perspective and a perception versus reality. College, even though people talk about it quite a bit and we know 16 networks are broadcasting the games, there's plenty of windows for people to watch their team play on a regular basis. It's interesting -- it's still considered at layers below the NFL from scale and importance and yet, if you really look at it from the perspective of how many people will be at the venues, how many people are following passionately along for this, there's still a way for college to increase in value. It probably has the biggest upside in our portfolio.” (link)

Former LSU Football HC Les Miles’ lawsuit against both the school and NCAA has been relocated from federal to state court. The suit originally filed back in June, over a decision to vacate 37 of his teams’ victories from 2012-15 following a NCAA ruling that former offensive lineman Vadal Alexander had received improper financial benefits during his time in Baton Rouge, was dismissed in federal court on September 30 at Miles’ request. The new state lawsuit largely tracks federal complaint allegations, but also adds a claim that the defendants violated the state constitution. In the federal case, the defense said Miles couldn’t sue “because he did not have a ‘property right’ to the LSU victories or in Hall of Fame eligibility.” (link)

Hurricane Helene’s impact continues to be felt through the Carolinas, including in Jackson County, N.C., home of Western Carolina. With the Catamounts scheduled to host Wofford in football on Saturday, the school has announced that the contest will take place without spectators in order “to keep roads clear for rescue and recovery efforts for disaster relief vehicles.” Wofford will also make the trip for the game the day of, bring along their own food and have to plan to have enough gas for travel into and out of Cullowhee because of shortages in the region. Kennesaw State announces the new Owls Collective, powered by Student Athlete NIL (SANIL). AD Milton Overton: “There are so many changes going on in college athletics today, but one thing remains the same: our commitment to success on the field, in the classroom, and in the community. We have accomplished so much together over the past few years and with the shift in the new business model of college sports we must adjust accordingly to ensure our ability to recruit the best and brightest student-athletes and maintain our momentum.” (link)

The uber-popular traveling circus baseball squad the Savannah Bananas will play a game next spring in Clemson’s Memorial Stadium. Of particular note from the Post & Courier’s Jon Blau: “There will be a left-field net that stands 50 feet tall -- 13 feet taller than the Green Monster in Boston. The left-field wall will only be 190 feet from home plate, 325 to right, 363 to right center. [...] Clemson’s stadium, which seats 81,000-plus, will offer the Bananas a chance to break their club record for attendance. The current record is 45,000, which occurred on a visit to Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park on Sept. 22.” (link)

A group of seven current, former and future student-athletes have filed an objection to the House settlement with O’Bannon case lead attorney Michael Hausfield arguing the damages are too low and both the revenue-sharing system and booster restrictions are unlawful and unfair, adding: “The settlements involve illusory, contradictory and overreaching terms; approval of them should be denied.” (link, link - full filing); In response, lead House plaintiff attorney Steve Berman: “This is sour grapes, unsupported by an expert’s evidence. Judge Wilken has overruled objections to our expert’s damage methodology, evidence and supports the notion that the settlement has recovered over 60 percent of damages. Housefield average recovery is under 10 percent. As for revenue sharing going forward, Housefield fails to deal with the fact that the athletes will not receive over 50 percent of athletic revenues – the same as the pros. Housefield offers no evidence that this is not an excellent and just result.” (link)

During Big Ten Basketball Media Days, Commissioner Tony Petitti touched on a number of topics including student-athlete employment, on which he stated: “I think when you speak with student-athletes, at least when I do, I think they feel like they're getting a lot of the benefits they would get under employment status. I think student-athletes want to be students and have the experience that they have now. Having said that, I think what we're talking about is a meaningful change and being able to provide more benefits directly. But in terms of the other things that come, the health and wellness, the training, nutrition, employment status is really complicated. I think it's sort of a misconception that when people think about employment that that automatically means it's better for the employee. That's not necessarily the case. So I think there's a lot of unintended things that could happen in that model, so I think the best model is to preserve the student-athlete paradigm first and then move to the next world here that we're trying to get to by providing more benefits directly.” Asked about the situation at UNLV: “Just generally I think that's why we've spent a lot of work the last year trying to find the structure through settlement that will give some predictability and create a sustainable system. I think we believe in the mechanism that the settlement is proposing, and we're optimistic that the judge will see it the same way, that we can get to a place whereby settling we can have a structure in place, work towards that. I think we'll clear up a lot of the things you're referring to, and that will require good rule-making on our part. Overall I think that settlement gives us the best opportunity to create a sustainable system there.” Also of note: “We're committed to the NCAA Tournament the way it is. I know there's been talk about -- you guys have reported about expansion in terms of adding teams. But other than that, the discussions are in the Big Ten about getting more teams in the NCAA Tournament.” (link)

ESPN’s Heather Dinich gets commentary on College Football Playoff access as the SEC-Big Ten meeting approaches next week. From an unnamed SEC source: “Even if you get four, that's 25% of our league. There's not another sport we compete in where less than half of our league is getting into the postseason. In the NFL, 38% of their teams get into the postseason. We've got to figure out a way or we just dumb down our schedule and try to get in that way, but that's not really what anybody wants.” Another source: “There is no perfect way to do this. Once upon a time we used computers to make the selections, and people weren't happy with it. If someone isn't left out, then the event doesn't have a whole lot of value.” (link)

Florida State AD Michael Alford chats with The Osceola's Jerry Kutz on a number of fronts. On the changing financial framework headed to college athletics: “It is going to look different administratively, in operational budgets. We’re just going through that exercise right now because my budgets get set, as you know, in January of (2025) for the following year. So we are figuring that out as we go through this fall. [...] There are no silver bullets. [...] We have to examine (everything we do) and look where we can save. We are going to have a contractual relationship more with our student-athletes. I need to make sure that doesn’t impact our ability to have the special relationships we have with them now and the culture we have here at Florida State, which is so special.” As for private equity/venture capital opportunities: “We are examining multiple options in looking at this. We started the venture capital look in, but we didn’t do anything because we wanted to see how this House case (would settle) and receive a final clarification. We’re running all kinds of various financial models, and scenarios, in any possible way long term to provide the very best experience for our student athletes, so we can continue to compete for either conference or national championships. And what does that look like? We’re going to make decisions over the next few months.” (link)

Illinois AD Josh Whitman to Illinois Inquirer reporter Joey Wagner on the future potential of 105 football scholarships: “I also will tell you from the conversations I've had that I've not heard from one school that is planning to be at the 105 level. I don't think that would make us an outlier.” (link)

Realignment Rumblings…
+ Extra Points’ Matt Brown and Action Network’s Brett McMurphy report the Mountain West and Hawaii are in discussions about the Rainbow Warriors becoming full MWC members. Brown adding: “One of the big unanswered questions in these discussions centers around Hawaii's travel subsidy obligations, and whether they can make the math work for everybody. Hawaii pays a travel subsidy in the Big West. As we wrote this month, Hawaii's late night TV slot seen as a potential asset in future league TV deals, not a drawback (thanks gambling!).” (link)
+ Sacramento State President Luke Wood shares renderings of a proposed redesign of Hornet Stadium in conjunction with architecture firm, Populous. Plans include a reimagined entrance, a sunken bowl of lower-level seating and a large floating second seating deck as well as the elimination of the six-lane-wide track on the field’s perimeter, to allow for more seating in closer proximity to the field. With the redesign, the current capacity of the facility is expected to expand from 21,195 to at least 25K while serving as home to the Hornets’ Football, Men’s & Women’s Rugby, Men’s & Women’s Soccer and Club Sports programs. Check it out. (link)
+ “College sports is all about relationships, especially in the most pressurized moments.” That’s how the San Jose Mercury News’ Jon Wilner summarizes the story of Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould traveling to Spokane for face-to-face meetings with Gonzaga brass last weekend. Now that the Zags are in the fold, Wilner writes further on what happens next: “There are no schools available that would materially alter the Pac-12’s media valuation now that the seven football schools and Gonzaga are in place. Not even Memphis and Tulane, with their Central Time Zone kickoff windows, will significantly alter the value, industry sources said.” As for a timeline, per a source: “Everyone knows they need a minimum of eight full-time members, but the reality is, they have 20 months to meet that minimum.” (link)
+ The Daily News-Record’s Shane Mettlen ponders how the realignment dominoes could impact James Madison and the rest of the Sun Belt, noting the SBC had league-wide discussions about membership when the Pac-12 announced its first quartet of additions. Mettlen says now “it’s wait and see time. If Texas State leaves, the most likely play remains simply adding a replacement from Conference USA with Western Kentucky a leading candidate. But the Memphis rumors — and some SBC leaders believe they have legs — are what officials are really keeping an eye on. Instability in the American could benefit the Sun Belt in two ways. First, losing Memphis or other top brands would likely mean ESPN reworks the AAC TV deal, meaning schools such as East Carolina might be more intrigued by an offer to join the Sun Belt. Second, it could firm up the Sun Belt’s claim as the top Group of Five conference in the Eastern and Central time zones, which would only help the SBC in future dealings with ESPN. Which brings us to the final question.” Mettlen concludes that if the College Student Football League proposal from earlier this week comes to fruition, “all the fretting over where Texas State might end up moot.” (link)

Kansas will pay Deloitte $200K for its recommendations in four areas, per KUSports.com’s Henry Greenstein: “‘scenario planning’ (with regard to those revenue-sharing and name, image and likeness issues), partnerships with third-party vendors, revenue generation and valuation of the athletic department.” Deloitte will also provide a “business as usual’ scenario” with “3-5 alternatives for potential outcomes,” a review of third-party vendors, an assessment of the Jayhawks’ athletic value to KU, the local area and the Big 12 and more. The DI Committee on Infractions has levied penalties against former Arizona State Assoc. HC/current Las Vegas Raiders HC Antonio Pierce and former staffer Anthony Garrett for their involvement in COVID dead period recruiting violations. Both would be suspended for their first full season back in the NCAA, with Pierce receiving an eight-year show-cause order and Garrett receiving a five-year show-cause. Per the COI, Pierce “ran the show” with “primary control of the football program’s roster and oversight of coaching staff members’ recruiting activities,” directed an AC to tamper with a student-athlete at another school and failed to cooperate with the investigation. On former HC Herm Edwards, the COI writes: “To his credit, Edwards acknowledged the violations and took responsibility for his and his staff's conduct during the investigation. Edwards explained that his personal involvement in certain NCAA rules violations was motivated by his desire to assuage the concerns of prospective student-athletes and their family members about the present and future impacts of the COVID-19 crisis. Edwards also acknowledged that his motives did not excuse his violations and that some violations were intended to gain a recruiting advantage.” Lots to unpack. (link)

SBJ’s Bret McCormick notes that food and beverage sales are up 67% YoY (per-caps are up 6.81% from 2023) through four 2024 home games at Michigan Stadium, marking the second consecutive year of gains for Michigan and its food & beverage provider, Sodexo Live. Contributing most to the rise have been the start of alcohol sales as well as total increased points of sale rising from approximately 300 to 575. Sodexo Live Michigan Stadium GM Michael Jordan: “Adding that many points-of-sale, a rising tide lifts all boats. We were able to help the people that wanted to get beer or shorten all the rest of our concessions lines for people that just wanted to get a snack. That’s really shown out in the numbers of sales.” Wolverines’ football attendance is up only 1% through its opening home slate, so that hasn’t proven to be a major factor in sales growth. Overall, food sales in suites have risen 20%, while the creation of beverage-only grab-and-go stands out of shipping containers that include refrigeration and Mashgin self-checkout have also contributed to the improving concession sales numbers. Sticking with the Wolverines, Barstool Sports Founder Dave Portnoy follows up on his commitment to spending $3M to help Michigan land a quarterback, noting he has talked to HC Sherrone Moore and will follow up with “the one guy I got to talk to.” More from Portnoy: “My problem with the NIL, besides it’s a lot of money just to kind of throw out the window, but I’m willing to, like do it. I do not want to talk to other people. I don’t want to — I am not trying to get in the middle of the NIL. I do not want people I don’t know calling me. I don’t want to talk to this guy. I don’t want emails from that guy. I don’t want any of that. […] I’ve said this, the collective. There’s a company involved in the Michigan collective that I f***ing hate. And I had a bad experience with Barstool with them. I will not associate with this company ever, so that almost — they’re out. So, I’ve got to see. And I don’t want middlemen. I don’t want any of it. I want the quarterback’s cell phone number, just because it’s like we got to schedule when we’re doing our things at Barstool. That’s it. So we’ll see.” Pardon My Take Co-Host Dan Katz adds he has something “in the works” to help get a quarterback to Wisconsin through his Stella Blue Coffee brand, adding his deal “will probably cost considerably less than Michigan’s.” (link)

Six figures for a Women’s Soccer student-athlete? Yep, it’s Texas standout Lexi Missimo, per the Washington Post’s Jesse Dougherty. Missimo’s father: “They (Texas One Fund) basically said, ‘We’ll pay you to finish your education.’ It’s shocking. Like, are you kidding me? Obviously Lexi saw [former Texas running back] Bijan Robinson driving around campus in a Lamborghini. You know the football players have all that — and they deserve it, by the way, because of the hundreds of millions they bring to the university. But to do it for women’s soccer? It was unbelievable.” Opendorse CEO Blake Lawrence: “The average person would say women’s soccer is not a profitable sport. It generates expenses to maintain it, right? But the attention on women’s soccer in the 15-to-18-year-old high school girls’ mindshare is significant. It is one of the fastest-growing youth sports, too. ... If you could really deep dive into it, that would be connected to enrollment in some way. These sports can all matter for enrollment, and enrollment matters big-time from an economic standpoint.” The Longhorns are currently 9-1-2 with Missimo accounting for seven goals & seven assists thus far.
