Redlands AD Jeff Martinez will retire in May 2025 after a quarter-century leading the Bulldogs and more than four decades with the university. Martinez: “Bulldog Athletics has never been just a job; it has been a way of life for Susan, me, and the kids. We feel so fortunate to have been a part of our university and the Redlands community for the past 40-plus years. I will be forever grateful to Ted Runner who brought us into the Bulldog family and [former] President Jim Appleton, who believed in my potential and gave me the opportunity to provide leadership to Bulldog Athletics.” Parker Executive Search has been selected to assist with the search process, which will be chaired by VP of Enrollment Kevin Dyerly. A group of seven current, former and future student-athletes have filed an objection to the House settlement with O’Bannon case lead attorney Michael Hausfield arguing the damages are too low and both the revenue-sharing system and booster restrictions are unlawful and unfair, adding: “The settlements involve illusory, contradictory and overreaching terms; approval of them should be denied.” (link, link - full filing); In response, lead House plaintiff attorney Steve Berman: “This is sour grapes, unsupported by an expert’s evidence. Judge Wilken has overruled objections to our expert’s damage methodology, evidence and supports the notion that the settlement has recovered over 60 percent of damages. Housefield average recovery is under 10 percent. As for revenue sharing going forward, Housefield fails to deal with the fact that the athletes will not receive over 50 percent of athletic revenues – the same as the pros. Housefield offers no evidence that this is not an excellent and just result.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown updates on what he has learned as the title sponsor for the bowl game between the OAC and PAC as part of the Opendorse Bowl Series. Of note from across college athletics, College Sports Tomorrow is proposing “streamlining college football into a single, national league called the College Student Football League.” The proposal would regionally organize the top 72 DI programs into the Power 12 conference with 12 six-team divisions and the remaining 64 into eight eight-team divisions to be the Group of 8. Per the release, the top eight Group of 8 programs would have the chance to play in the Power 12, without the relegation of any P12 schools. WSJ’s Laine Higgins: “The CSFL, which hopes to exist as a parallel structure to the NCAA, argues that a larger pie would then help the competitive balance of college football and allow programs to pay their players. They say they don’t want paying football players to come at the cost of scholarships for athletes in Olympic sports. The CSFL would implement a salary cap and floor for teams as well as pay scales for athletes’ endorsement earnings based on their position and on-field usage. It would also implement stricter guidelines for transfers, limiting athletes to two transfers within a five-year eligibility window. Athletes would collectively bargain with the league through a players’ association, the format of which would depend on whether athletes are reclassified as employees, a question that is currently at issue in federal court and before the National Labor Relations Board. Revenue generated by the CSFL wouldn’t be split evenly among members; 94% would go to the 72 teams in the top tier, with the programs that drive the most viewers and win the most games receiving larger shares. The remaining 6% would go to the 64 teams in the lower tier. It’s lopsided, but Perna believes it still begins to correct the current imbalance in college sports.” CBS’ Dennis Dodd notes the CSFL would launch in 2031, 2032 after the Big Ten and SEC media rights deals expire. Randolph officially opened its new 4,700 square-foot Wrestling facility. AD Tom Galbraith: “When we talked about wrestling, we ran into one roadblock, and that was a facility. You are now standing in front of the answer to that question. This building not only represents the College's commitment to wrestling, it represents the College's commitment to the athletics department as a whole and our nearly 350 student-athletes who call themselves WildCats.
