Last week, the NCAA asked S&P Global to withdraw its most recent AA bond credit rating. According to Sportico’s Daniel Libit and Eben Novy-Williams, the “decision came as the NCAA readies a final $1.5M payment to retire a series of 2012 revenue bonds, which would bring to an end a quarter-century saga of financing expenses through municipal debt. The final payment for what started out as $13.5M in bonds is due May 1. Once it clears, an NCAA spokesperson says, the organization will be ‘entirely debt free,’ with ‘no plans to borrow additional funds at this time.’ The spokesperson insisted that the decision to withdraw the credit rating was done to save money, and not because the NCAA believed it was about to be downgraded. That position was affirmed in a press release S&P put out on Friday, in which it called the NCAA’s outlook ‘stable at the time of withdrawal.’” (link)

The DI Council has approved changes to the notification-of-transfer windows in football and men's and women's basketball from a total of 45 days to 30 days, effective immediately. The council also adopted changes to NCAA signing rules that transition the National Letter of Intent program protections into signing and recruiting rules, effective immediately. Moving forward, written offers of athletics aid will replace the NLI, and the previous formula for determining signing dates will be applied to those written offers. Transfer prospects may be signed by a new school once their names are permissibly entered in the Transfer Portal. After a prospect signs a written offer of athletics aid, other schools that offer athletically related financial aid will be prohibited from recruiting communications with that prospect. Additionally, the council introduced a proposal that would change reclassification rules for schools transitioning from DII or DIII into DI. The proposal is expected to be considered for a vote during the NCAA Convention in January. If adopted, the proposal would reduce the transition period for schools reclassifying to three years (down from four years under existing rules). For schools reclassifying from DIII to DI, the transition period would be four years (down from five under existing rules). More. (link)

NCAA SVP of Business Performance Brian Higgins joins Connect's Steph Garcia Cichosz to dig into the use of data in the most recent round of NCAA Championship site selections. Higgins also talks about the importance of incorporating fan demographic data into sport-specific sites, the value of data in elevating women's sports, long-term priorities for his unit within the NCAA and more. On how data was helpful in selecting hosts for DII championships: “I think the same data that we use to make these decisions will also help us tell the story to our fans of a particular sport and get them to come to our Division II and Division III games. […] If we can make it easier for our fans of volleyball to let them know the Division II volleyball championship is only a 30-minute drive from you, we can really boost the attendance and the engagement with the sport at all levels.” Higgins on the importance of the fan database: “We pick up data on our fans today from when they buy tickets – especially to our Division I events, those are all electronic tickets now – so you have to put in your email address and a little bit about yourself and that helps us know where you are and at least what sport you’re willing to spend money on to go see in person. People fill out brackets on Ncaa.com and sign up for contests and things like that and all that data comes together for us to know more about our fans know – what they like, what teams they like…[and allows the NCAA to] let them know there's a cool event in their area, let them know their favorite team is playing in their city – all of those things to activate college sports fans and show them events that we think they’ll like whether that’s on TV or in person.” Full discussion on Connect. Cal State San Bernardino will begin offering a Spanish language broadcast option for all sports through FloSports, believed to be the first DII school to produce English and Spanish broadcasts in-house. VP for Academic Affairs Paz Olivérez: ”The addition of Spanish language broadcasts is a tremendous step forward for CSUSB, especially as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). It not only reflects our commitment to inclusion but also strengthens our ability to engage and support our diverse student population and their families.
