Illinois AD Josh Whitman discusses how the Illini are planning to address revenue sharing in a post-House settlement world: “There's two ways to get there. You can either make more money or you can spend your money differently, and we're working very aggressively on both of those fronts to put ourselves in a position to fully participate in the revenue share when it opens up next year. [...] So every place is going to make their own decisions. And, obviously, I saw the news out of Tennessee, and that makes sense for Tennessee. I don't know that we would do that in Illinois, but I also don't know we wouldn't. I think that, at this point in time, for me to close the door on anything would be premature. And so we'll just continue to evaluate all the different options and see what makes the most sense. There are no plans right now to do that, though. We have no plans for that right now.” (link, link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake in his Sunday notes column: “I’ve had conversations with several interested lawmakers who agree and are tracking what the Big Ten and SEC do with the College Football Playoff. There’s some saber rattling going on. One United States Senator told me: ‘I am already working on it. I’m optimistic that something could be done, given the conversations. They’re screaming at us to do something about NIL. It wouldn’t be difficult to get a committee set up on this. Michael Baumgartner, who is running for Congress in Washington, told me the issue is on his radar as well. Baumgartner told me: ‘There are bigger fish to fry, but it’s a pretty important fish.’ Baumgartner, you may recall, co-taught a course titled ‘Insurgent Warfare and Football’ with the late Mike Leach at Washington State and Mississippi State.” (link)

Northern Illinois AD Sean Frazier & DePauw (DIII) AD Stevie Baker-Watson sat down with AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to discuss parenting while in the Big Chair. Frazier: “You’ve gotta have the talk about what this is going to look like, because it has to be a give and take. The marriage is one piece but then the actual give and take of the business is extreme. [...] Having children gives you a unique understanding and a lot of empathy about what others - my trainer, my equipment operations staff, my coach - they have families and there’s so much time that comes along with that. You do become a lot more aware and sensitive about the time constraints. So, when a coach comes in and says, ‘We’re going to practice at 6:30 in the morning.’ I say, ‘Really? Let’s go through that.’ Now, I’m not saying we couldn’t do it, but we have to have these other considerations based on what’s going on, because all that comes into play. Let me tell you: The worst thing you can do is to create a morale issue when you don’t communicate effectively and people feel you don’t care about them or their families.” Lots more. (link)

Vanderbilt’s 40-35 upset over Alabama marked the school’s first win over a No. 1-ranked team, and Commodores Football HC Clark Lea hopes it leads to more Vandy fans attending games: “What we need to do is fill the stadium with black and gold shirts. And when we do that, it will be a hard place to play. It may not be the biggest, but it is on top of you, and it can get loud. I think this is a glimpse as to what Saturday night in Nashville can be.” According to The Tennessean's Gentry Estes, Alabama fans Saturday made up an estimated 75% of the Memorial Stadium crowd, and it “might have been more.” Estes notes the win was the “biggest in modern program history” for VU, but it is “difficult to feel like a big-time program when visiting fans so consistently swarm your stadium and outnumber your own.” (link)

Was Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek upset about the $250K fine for the Razorbacks due to fans rushing the field after Saturday night’s win over Tennessee?: “Absolutely not. That is a lifetime memory for many people, to get out on the field and celebrate a win like that. You’ve got grandfathers, fathers and sons that were down there. It’s a memory people will have and keep with them. But the first thing we want to do is make sure it’s done safely and that the visiting team gets off the field safely as does their staff and the officials. [...] Our event staff and security staff did as well as they could to make sure everyone was safe.” (link)

Lamar AD Jeff O’Malley on improving the game day experience and attendance at Cardinals home football games: “It's really a team effort when it comes to the game day experience. We want to give the city and the Lamar community something to be proud of, and we think we're doing that.” Improvements include a new entrance for students, an upgraded tailgating area, local food trucks, water misters inside the stadium and a new video board and sound system. Saturday’s attendance for the Texas Southern game was 8,443, which, according to O’Malley, “was one of the best crowds we’ve had in years.” He hopes to get to 10K for the upcoming Stephen F. Austin game. (link)

San José State Women’s Volleyball lost its first match of the season last Thursday against Colorado State as the Spartans were back on the floor after headlines of match cancellations. SJSU HC Todd Kress: “I walked up to (CSU HC) Emily (Kohan) tonight, and I was like, ‘Should I say thank you for playing us?’ I seriously meant that because, of course, we're disappointed that we're losing opportunities to play, but it's not just us that are losing opportunities to play. It's the people choosing not to play us, and that's very unfortunate when it comes to these young women that have earned the right to step on the court and play. [...] We're in a position where it appears that government and politics has kind of intertwined itself with college sports. And the one thing that I love about college sports, it's always been a safe haven for me, that's one area that government I don't think should be involved. And it seems that some of those decisions are being made at levels to where they're denying their student athletes as well, which is then denying our student athletes.” (link)

South Carolina Football HC Shane Beamer on the frequency of injuries to Ole Miss players during Saturday afternoon’s game: “Whew. First of all, I hope all those guys are okay, for sure. … It's remarkable, to me, how many, maybe it's something ... and listen, I've got my own problems; we just got our butts kicked 27-3. But it's fascinating to me, how many injuries occur for them after the opposing offense makes a first down. Or has a big play. And, you go back and watch the Wake Forest game, it happens a lot to the same guy. You watch the Kentucky game, it happens a lot. … So, certainly we'll look at the tape and I know there's an (SEC) review process as well. But it's, again, I hope those guys are well and they're great players and, you know, I really hope they're okay. … But, we'll look at it and there's not much the officials can do during the game but certainly it's a thing that we'll discuss with the people above us as well. … the timing of some of the injuries, it's a really bad look for college football. And, it's not what this game's about ... if what it looks like is accurate. ” (link)

Sports Business Journal’s Bret McCormick digs into Murray State’s planned upgrades to the CFSB Center as Racers AD Nico Yantko points to two objectives: 1) generate new revenue for the athletic department; and, 2) enhance its athlete recruiting efforts. On the first front, “Yantko expects the donor-funded renovation to create $1.6 million in net new ticketing revenue once it’s finished, which would more than double the $1.3 million in ticket sales revenue that the Racers’ athletic department booked in 2023.” Yantko: “We’re trying to create a cycle of premium seating. Creating a variety of experiences. I’ve got to recruit the fans as much as we’re recruiting players these days. [...] You’re part of the action now. Our fan base, they don’t want to be removed from the action, they want to be right in it. [...] We’ve got to continue to acclimate for this ever-changing landscape.” Lots more on the scope of the project, which has a timeline of “full lower bowl demolition by the end of the 2025-26 college basketball season, followed by construction of the new permanent stands, premium areas and performance space, with the goal of completing the project by the 2026-27 basketball season.” (link)

Bloomberg’s Ira Boudway dives into the toxicity of sports betting apps. Boudway chats with a handful of professional bettors, who share with him ways they get around the wager limits set by apps, including simulating gambling addict behavior to get online sportsbooks to send you bonus money and keep your accounts open. How? With bots set up to log into their accounts between 2-4 AM to make bets, or withdrawing money and reversing the withdrawals so it looks like they cannot resist gambling. “The idea is to win as much as you can before the house catches on.” According to Boudway’s review of a study released in June, in which researchers used anonymous bank records from hundreds of thousands of bettors across the US to track their gambling spend and monthly income from 2019 to 2023, “In states with access to online sports betting, they found, rates of people spending at least 10% of their income on gambling rose slightly, with the greatest increases among low-income bettors. … The median gambler in the SMU study deposited $136 over five years. … The real action happens at the ends of the curve. Of the more than 700,000 people in the SMU panel, fewer than 5% withdrew more from their betting apps than they deposited. These few players—whose wagers apparently won—collectively earned more than $100 million. The next 80% of bettors made up for those operators’ losses. And the 3% of bettors who lost the most accounted for almost half of net revenue. In a market shaped like this, it’s no wonder betting companies want to limit sharps and encourage whales, as free-spending, unskilled bettors are known.” Lots more. (link)

SBJ’s Ben Portnoy goes deep on the viability of College Sports Tomorrow’s College Student Football League (CSFL). Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam, who is part of the group, “It is exceptionally complicated. There is not an easy answer [to fix college football] that you can just write up on your whiteboard … [But] I do think our model … is the right way to go.” West Virginia President Gordon Gee: “I have yet to get 60,000 people to come to a chemistry lecture. I’ve tried, but it just doesn’t work. The point is college athletics has been a way for unifying a campus and unifying higher education. Right now it’s disruptive, and we need to get back to the unification side of it.” Simplebet co-founder/CEO Chris Bevilacqua: “This is like Democrats and Republicans talking to each other, trying to create bipartisan legislation. It’s going to take some time, but we’re confident that, ultimately, the right thing will be to put this all together and serve everybody’s interests, not just the interests of a few. [...] College football out-rates and out-consumes the NBA by a lot on a national network basis. Yet the NBA gets a lot more value from their media partners because of their structure. This just comes down to structure.” TurnkeyZRG Chairman Len Perna projects incremental revenues for the new entity of $2B by 2032 with “94% of the league’s overall revenue to be directed toward the upper-tier league and dispersed unequally based on varying factors. The remaining 6% would be divided among those lower-tier programs. SEC and Big Ten schools, too, would be offered a preferred return of 30% off the top of that 94% between 2032 and 2036 (15% to each membership).” Perna also notes: “We’re in the business of socializing these ideas. And so if the commissioners want to meet with us, we’ll meet with them.” Lots more. (link)

The Albuquerque Journal’s Geoff Grammer got his hands on the Mountain West’s new MOU that kept the league together. There’s the expectation of a $100M windfall of exit fees from the Pac-12, along with no less than $3.5M annually from media rights for each member. Grammar clarifies that the postseason Men’s Basketball Tournament is slated to stay in Las Vegas, though UNLV’s Thomas & Mack Center is not specifically mentioned. Additional notes: “Though it’s unclear why this would be included in an MOU of this nature, clause eight reads: ‘The conference will move its offices to Las Vegas, Nevada, as soon as practicable after the expiration of its existing office lease in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and such Conference offices shall remain in Las Vegas, Nevada, at least through the end of the Term of this MOU and the Grant of Rights Agreement.’ The league’s headquarters have been in Colorado Springs since December 1998. [...] any MW member school invited to join the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 or SEC can leave without penalty. And the MOU can be modified only in writing and with both the league and 3/4 of the member schools.” (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann analyzes the lawsuit filed late last week by former Ohio State Football standout Terrelle Pryor against the NCAA. McCann: “Pryor arguably has the most compelling argument that he was harmed by the old system. As his complaint notes, he was Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2008 and he led the Buckeyes to the Big Ten championship in 2009. A year later Pryor was the MVP of the Rose Bowl. Then, the NCAA intervened in his career trajectory. [...] One concern for the NCAA is that they now face essentially the same lawsuit in three federal districts, and there’s no telling how many former college stars will file similar lawsuits in other districts. The litigation could eventually be consolidated in one forum, which would avert the possibility that courts reach conflicting decisions and relieve the NCAA of having to incur heavy legal fees playing defense across the country. This has happened before in sports litigation: More than 300 lawsuits brought by retired players against the NFL over concussions and long-term neurological ailments were eventually consolidated.” (link)

Ball State AD Jeff Mitchell joined the Higher Ed Athletics podcast and offers some advice to aspiring ADs on how to prepare and what to expect in joining a president’s cabinet, his communication strategy with BSU stakeholders, finding new fans in Indiana and more. Mitchell explains that serving on a president’s cabinet changes one’s leadership perspective on campus: “You really have to shed the label of whatever department or unit that you’re overseeing when you sit at the table, at least that’s what I do. I try to take off the Athletic Director hat and sit at the table as a senior advisor to our president and do the job that we’re all wanting to do on a daily basis, which is to serve the best interest of our students. It so happens that the other 10 members of our senior administration that report to our president, you know, have critical roles in their own right and are serving whether it’s faculty, staff or students generally, just depending on their respective jobs. I think we all, for the most part, are able to shed those respective titles and are a collaborative group to best advise the president to best promote the university in a way that is consistent.” Mitchell goes on to address the difficult balance of deciding how far into the future it is prudent to look given the current rate of change in the industry and says it “just depends on the situation. I don’t think that it’s wise for a ton of effort to go into robust strategic planning right now, because we’re, if anything, we have to be very nimble in how we operate today. … So I would take a nimble approach, but allow ourselves to dream and really develop in areas that require substantial time.” (link)

Spirit Airlines has an October 21 deadline to refinance more than $1B in debt that’s due next year and the airline is reportedly considering filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The blocked acquisition by JetBlue, changing consumer travel patterns, higher costs and an engine recall have all factored into the airline’s struggles as shares tumbled to a record low of $1.69 on Friday, down nearly 90% this year. The carrier has been losing money since 2020 and reported a $193M loss in Q2 of this year. (link)
