New Emerson AD Smyrl chats with the student newspaper, The Berkeley Beacon, about her priorities and challenges as she takes the helm of the Lions. Smyrl identifies her priorities as focusing on the small victories, getting to know the coaches and student-athletes, competitive success and pushing back against “the widely-held perception that Emerson is not a ‘sports school.’” On the former, Smyrl: “[It’s] really hearing from teams and individual student athletes and coaches about what is working and what’s not and setting realistic expectations. If there’s this thought like, ‘BAM,’ we’re gonna have [all the athletic facilities] right on campus, we owe honesty, to say, ‘Hey look, the administration is going to work on it. But in the meantime, student-athletes, what can we do to make sure that you see the growth while you’re a student-athlete and then when you graduate and you look back, you see that the growth has continued?’” (link) 

Christopher Newport AD McMullin camps with Extra Points' Matt Brown to dive into the uniqueness of the Coast 2 Coast, how his department and the university look to grow and more. McMullin on the latter: "The mission has always been about making sure that we're investing in the university and the experience that our students have so we can be prepared to meet the challenges of the modern world. ... Everybody wants to talk about making the student-athlete experience the best it can be, well I'm also a firm believer that the student-athlete experience stinks if all you do is lose. The AP’s Newberry observes that the NCAA has been uncharacteristically quiet “as one Republican-controlled state after another rushed to pass laws that supporters hail as a war on ‘wokeness,’ even as critics deride them as exclusionary and a step backward in human decency. SEC Commissioner Sankey submits the NCAA must be “wise” in its positioning, and TVP Communications Principal Parrott adds: “If they're saying that student athletes have the right to choose where they go to school, how they earn NIL money, how they use the transfer portal. It's going to be interesting to see what happens when they choose to hold events in locations that don't allow, let's say, women making a decision about the autonomy of their own bodies. […] It's going to be interesting to see if any of this influences where student athletes enroll and where they don't." (link)

State Legislative Matters:

+ The Arkansas House Insurance and Commerce Committee voted to move forward with a bill that would allow high school athletes who have been admitted to or signed a letter of intent to attend an Arkansas college “to enter into a contract and receive compensation for the commercial use of the student-athlete’s publicity rights” immediately. The bill does not address in-state students who commit to out-of-state programs. (link)

+ California Senate President Pro Tempore Atkins (D-39) has introduced a bill that would end California’s travel ban to 23 states with laws it deems as anti-LGBTQ and replace it with an advertising campaign that promotes acceptance for the LGBTQ community in those states. Atkins: “I think polarization is not working. We need to adjust our strategy. We know what we need to do, but we need to be able to be there to do it.” (link)

Morning Consult’s Burns spoke with dozens of sports executives, digital marketers, content creators and other stakeholders to understand how the relationship between Twitter and the sports industry will evolve, and whether or not CEO Musk’s takeover will impact sports fans’ reliance on the platform. Burns notes that half of sports fans said they have used Twitter at least once in the past month, compared with 44% of the general population; 16% of sports fans said they use Twitter multiple times per day, compared with 13% of U.S. adults; and Musk’s tenure “doesn’t appear to have severely impacted the industry’s ad spending on the platform, according to Sensor Tower data, as several sports properties reportedly spent about the same or even more in January as they did in September, prior to Musk’s acquisition.” Lots more data and analysis. More Higher Ed:

+ Bob Jones President Pettit will resign at the end of the school year despite signing a three-year contract extension two months ago. (link)

+ In fall 2022, the undergraduate enrollment decline slowed to 0.6%, according to preliminary data from the National Student Clearinghouse Research, which also shows that four-year public universities’ undergraduate enrollment fell by 0.9%. Meanwhile, undergraduate certificate programs experienced an enrollment increase of 5.5% YoY. Arkansas higher ed professor Miller believes private liberal arts colleges, as well as community colleges, are emphasizing the recruitment of male students in particular, in part by offering more sports participation options. The data seems to back that up, as the number of male undergraduates increased by 1.3% at four-year private, nonprofit institutions, while female undergraduate enrollment increased by 0.1%. (link)
