The Big 12 is set to hire WAC Commissioner Brian Thornton as the league’s new VP of Men’s Basketball, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel. (link)

More from yesterday’s SEC-Big Ten meeting, including this full quote from Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti on proposed super league ideas: “I have yet to see a single thing in any plan that I’ve learned details about that contains things that we couldn’t do ourselves and do with other colleagues. I don’t see anything that’s proprietary that anybody holds, that we would need, that someone else controls to do what they’re talking about. It’s basically schedule more good games, and reorganize the way you play those games, like in terms of just tiering or going across and redoing divisions. Some say conferences can survive. Some say you don’t need conferences. At the end of the day, I think there’s a strong commitment that we have the ability to do all of this ourselves.” And from SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey: “It’s no coincidence that both these efforts (Project Rudy and the College Student Football League) have ramped up their public relations schemes around our meeting. I don’t think there are coincidences in life. And I also don’t think it’s coincidental that they’ve chosen to comment on both Tony and I. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that one of your colleagues produces a little tweet today about we’re going to go around them.” UCLA AD Martin Jarmond called the meetings “productive,” adding: “It’s good to connect and have important conversations with athletic directors who face common challenges. We have a lot of work in front of us in college athletics. I left the meeting energized and enthused.” (link)

On the topic of scheduling more interconference games, Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti noted that "the question is there a structure where the two league offices work together to create more of those matchups? We had a pretty big discussion about the path to play each other more – see if you can figure out how you can actually do it; decide what games you want, how many – but that's a broad discussion." SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, who was in Ann Arbor for the Texas-Michigan game earlier this football season, adds: “Just an incredible experience, and you stand on the sideline prior to kickoff thinking, what if we can do this more with our non-conference games? We respect where we have in-state rivalries that take place in non-conference scheduling, but we had a real general conversation about the what-ifs in football and basketball." Sankey also said of NCAA governance that the “board of directors at the Division I level has to change, and it has to change rapidly. That's the view of my conference membership, our presidents and chancellors. I shared that perspective, but I don't think we're alone. I don't think it's just two conferences that share that." Like UCLA AD Martin Jarmond, Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione called the meetings productive with “considerable time” spent on discussing the House settlement. "It was an opportunity to learn from each other and have important conversations. It was good to get in a room and compare notes with other athletics directors who face common challenges." (link)

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips says of the SEC-Big Ten meetings in Nashville: “I don’t want to read too much into it. I think you have to pay attention, you have to understand what’s happening in order to chart your course. We’ve spent a lot of time together, the four (power conference) commissioners, about how we’re going to move forward with a new structure and governance and we’ve worked collaboratively. I don’t want to be paranoid about anything. I’m pretty level about it, and in all of these things I think there needs to be transparency. That’s how you build trust and that’s how you're able to work together. So we’ll see what comes out of it.” USA Today’s Dan Wolken observes that “the ACC exists in a state of long-term uncertainty, with Phillips playing the happy warrior and constantly talking up his league’s strengths rather than its challenges.” However, he wonders if the league isn’t an equal partner in SEC’s and Big Ten’s conversations “despite all of its success, its history, its major markets and its current success, is it still a power conference? What is its future? Does it have one that even remotely resembles what the ACC has looked like for nearly three-quarters of a century? … The ACC isn't a failing league or business. If anything, it’s never had more to brag about. It wins in every sport. It has its own conference network. It just surpassed $700M in revenue for the first time in a fiscal year. If the schools can’t make this work, the ACC may not be the problem.” (link)

Ohio State AD Ross Bjork says the Buckeyes’ travel budget increased by $2M with the expansion of the Big Ten and says he has concerns beyond the costs. "I think the thing that we have to learn is what toll does it take on our athletes, right?. What is the right amount of travel to go out there? Luckily we only have one trip (out west) for most of our teams. I can't imagine if you're the four West Coast teams and you're going to have multiple trips to the Midwest or let alone the East Coast. … I think we're going to have to assess the next couple years and figure out what's the right rhythm, what's the right approach. This year I think will be a nice learning curve for everyone." (link)

Arizona State AD Graham Rossini joins KJZZ to discuss the evolution of college athletics and its impact on ASU and notes that “we are aware that we need to sophisticate the way that we run the business of an athletic department. And that's all intended to create resources that we can reinvest in the young people. So I think a lot of it's just been using sports business, using, you know, attributes of professional sports, which I spent a lot of time in and bringing that in, in ways that we can drive ticket sales, corporate partnerships, different donor and VIP experiences all with the mindset of creating that we can reinvest into the young people that we're here to serve and, and lead.” Regarding the Big 12’s large geographic footprint, Rossini explains the “benefit of the national conference is starting to bear some fruit where our television ratings are up about 152% year over year. And that's because our games are now on ESPN and Fox and those networks and they're not on a regional sports network. And so the national exposure has been an immediate benefit. And then even having football games in the state of Texas, you can't put a recruiting value on the chance to compete in these recruiting hotbeds in a state like Texas.” More. (link)

Coaches Corner…
+ Missouri Football HC Eli Drinkwitz questions the timing of the decision to eliminate the NLI: “Honestly I’ve got a lotta thoughts on it, but we’re in the middle of a season and I need to make sure my focus is on trying to figure out a way to beat UMass. It’s really hard for head coaches right now to get their players focused and motivated to play on Saturdays while constantly figuring out what new changes are coming down. I mean, today, this morning, I just got word that we no longer have National Letters of Intent. We’re getting blown up by recruits and we don’t have any answers for them. We don’t have answers for the settlement, we don’t have answers for NIL, we don’t have answers for National Letter of Intent; we don’t have a lot of answers right now on the portal.” Asked whether roster management has replaced game planning as the toughest part of HCs’ jobs, Drinkwitz replies: “Well the answer to that question is, do you even know what roster is going to be in future? Because I don’t. The settlement won’t be finalized until April. The settlement has roster limits, which limits the number of scholarships you can have. Or, not limit; it actually doesn’t limit scholarships but it limits the number on the roster you can have. But we don’t know what any of that looks like moving forward. So, yeah, trying to build a team when you don’t know what the rules of that will look like is pretty difficult.” (link)
+ Auburn Football HC Hugh Freeze welcomes the reduction of the transfer portal from 45 days to 30 and adds: “I wish it was only seven days. I don’t think it should be that long. I think all the coaches agree with that. But the length of that is still too long. I’m glad it’s shortened some.” Freeze also says tampering is already prevalent this season: “We’ve created a world that’s not real healthy, I don’t think, for our sport. But yet, we as coaches still have the opportunity to impact a lot of kids and a lot of lives and do a great job. We’re all blessed to have very good jobs, it’s just sad that some of it is tainted by so many different things that have changed it so drastically that I don’t think teach great life lessons.” (link)

Their ongoing support was very helpful to ensure it was a smooth process in light of how challenging transitions can be.” (link)

Learfield introduces the Fanbase Fan Report, a “comprehensive deep dive into the demographics, behaviors, and affinities of 150M+ college fans.” The report also shares insights on NIL sentiment, fan engagement, and emerging trends within the industry. As an industry, college sports has the biggest fanbase in all of sports at 195M. There are 8x more men’s college basketball games on TV than the NBA, 8.2x more women’s basketball games televised than the WNBA and 3.8x more college football games TV than the NFL. Furthermore, 98 of the top 100 designated market areas (DMAs) are represented by DI teams compared to 42 represented by the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB. Additionally, the report states that “college sports fans are the most avid sports fans in the world. 45% report being ‘very interested’ in three or more sports. While this overlaps with some pro sports, the most engaged college sports fans show significantly more interest in college sports, as measured by their game attendance, merchandise purchases, and game viewing/listening habits, than their professional counterparts.” (link, link - full report)

Comcast in a statement: “We’re pleased the Big Ten Network will be available to Xfinity TV customers who subscribe to the Popular TV package in Oregon, Washington, and California in time for the action this weekend.” Further details have yet to be reported, but The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner notes the “resolution comes in advance of the basketball season, when dozens of games involving the West Coast quartet are scheduled for broadcast on the Big Ten Network.” (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker was asked at an event at the UMass Club whether he has any interest in getting back into politics and responded: “I never rule anything out. But I think we live in really challenging times, and it’s important [for] really good people to step up. … If someone said to me, ‘No, you’re going to be president of the NCAA,’ I would have said, ‘Yeah right.’ So, I never rule anything out.” (link)

The Citadel AD Mike Capaccio will retire after six years as AD. Capaccio will remain in the role until his successor is named, at which point he will transition to serve as Senior Advisor to the President for Athletic Fundraising. President Gen. Glenn Walters: “Mike has had a role in recruiting topnotch coaches, renovating Johnson Hagood Stadium, raising funds for athlete scholarships, and navigating a dynamic college sports landscape far different than when he started out as a college athlete.” (link)

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey and Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti talk about today’s meetings in Nashville, after which Petitti was asked about Project Rudy and other super league ideas and said: “I have yet to see anything in any plan that we couldn’t do ourselves. ... It’s basically scheduling more good games and reorganizing the way you play those games.” Sankey added: “I don’t think it's a coincidence that they ramped up their public relations scheme around our meeting.” Asked about the perception that the SEC and Big Ten may separate from everyone else, Sankey replied: “I don’t think this perception is consistent with our conversation." Sankey on talks about a possible scheduling partnership: “We had real general conversation about what-ifs in football and basketball and talked briefly about other sports." Sankey on the future of NCAA governance: “It has to change.” While no agreements were made about future College Football Playoff formats, Sankey commented that “this has to go incredibly well. This has to be a successful launch. This isn't the time to talk about governance in (2026) or the format in '26. … Our focus on the future format comes after we go through this first cycle of the expanded College Football Playoff. Not a lot of conversation about what-ifs.” Sankey says the two leagues can’t unilaterally change the CFP format, but “we do have a defined role where we have to be clear participants at the end of that conversation." While today’s Big Ten-SEC confab “has generally been portrayed as a benign, issues-based meeting,” Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde reports that at least two ADs in attendance believe the talks will be substantive. One says: “They better be. This is a rare opportunity to get all of us in a room.” Meanwhile, dueling super league proposals seek to centralize media rights and Forde notes there is no “unifying power overseeing the search for that new model; there is major disagreement over what it should look like; and there is deep distrust over the motives of most involved parties. … Thus we have the various entities attempting to fill the decision-making void. And not necessarily with the noblest of intentions.” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey has been clear about his disinterest in ceding decision-making to a third party, and Cleveland Browns owner/College Student Football League advocate Jimmy Haslam complains: “Commissioners work for the college presidents. I think now is the time for college presidents to take a really hard look at what’s going on in college athletics, and whether the current system is sustainable or not. The commissioners have been unable—unwilling is probably a better word—to spend some time with us. The commissioners have never sat down with us and said, ‘OK, tell us how this works.’ It’s frustrating. … The idea of putting the SEC and the Big Ten together—I can see why people would be initially enamored by that. There’s a political reality and an economic reality, though. Leaving out that many schools, that’s just not going to fly. To think two conferences can pull off something like that? I think it’s incredibly naive.” (link)

More from ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips at the ACC Tipoff, where he acknowledged the league is considering whether to change the number of basketball conference games. “I think we’re looking at both of them, higher or lower. We wanna go through the year. I wanna listen to the coaches. Some believe we should play 18. And if we did that, we’d have some kind of measurement of you’d have to play games 19 and 20 as a certain level of team, right? You couldn’t just dumb it down and play a Quad 4 or two Quad 4 teams. And then there are some that think maybe we should go to 22 or 24, whatever that number is. … I think it’d be best for us obviously to take this season, take a look at it, see how it all plays out. This [20-game league slate] is a big number, as you’ve indicated. I don’t wanna hurt rivalries. We don’t want to do that. We only want to enhance that. But I also believe we’ll start to create some new rivalries as we get these three new schools integrated more fully.” (link)

The NCAA has released the results of its study of online harassment of college athletes. The study was conducted in partnership with Signify Group, which used its Threat Matrix to monitor public comments targeting the online profiles of student-athletes, coaches and officials participating in seven NCAA championships and the College Football Playoff National Championship. The study flagged more than 72K messages identified by Signify’s algorithm from a wider dataset of 1.3M posts/comments targeted at the social media profiles of the aforementioned participants and found that 18% of all abuse was sexual, making it the most prevalent type of abuse used to target male and female student-athletes. 12% of all abuse was related to sports betting, with more than 740 instances. As betting markets increased, so did the prevalence of harassment, with 19% rates in men's basketball and football. Some abuse flagged in other categories indicated that the posts were betting-related. Additionally, 10% of abuse consisted of racist content; 9% of abuse was homophobic/transphobic; 6% of abuse, approximately 380 instances, was violent; 80% of the abuse in the study was directed at March Madness student-athletes; and women's basketball student-athletes received approximately three times more threats than men's basketball student-athletes. NCAA President Charlie Baker: "I've heard too many student-athletes talk about abusive messages they have received, and for the first time ever, we now have evidence of the scale at which this is occurring. It's incredibly alarming and completely unacceptable. Fans have to do better, social media companies have to do more to identify and remove this content, and we all need reminders about responsible social media usage. … We will exhaust all options to reduce the harassment and vitriol student-athletes are experiencing too often today." Lots more. (link); Full summary analysis. (link)

The U.S. District Court of Connecticut has granted the Ivy League’s motion to dismiss the Choh v. Brown University antitrust complaint, “finding primarily that the plaintiffs did not adequately allege a relevant market,” according to Boise State law professor Sam Ehrlich, who adds the plaintiffs (who were challenging the league’s ban on athletic scholarships) attempted to limit the relevant labor market to ‘athletically and academically high-achieving’ (AAHA) students, which they felt would limit the market to the Ivies and not include less academically prestigious NCAA institutions that do give athletic scholarships. However, the court found that the complaint did not include other very academically prestigious [institutions] like Stanford, Duke, Notre Dame, and Rice. These four schools all do offer athletic scholarships, showing that the Ivies have plenty of competition in this market. So because the complaint did not include other universities that compete with the Ivies in the AAHA labor market (because they do offer athletic scholarships), the court found the plaintiffs cannot show adverse antitrust effect in that labor market. Of note, the court granted the motion to dismiss without leave for the plaintiffs to amend their complaint, meaning that the plaintiffs will have to show how they feel they can overcome the ‘substantive deficiencies’ of the case before they'll be able to file a new complaint.” (link); Full opinion. Missouri State’s new leaders, President Richard “Biff" Williams and Bears AD Patrick Ransdell, are ready to join FBS and Conference USA, and Ransdell remarks: “This is kind of the perfect scenario. You have a lot of change; we are able to take a fresh look at everything, and all move in the same direction at the same time. This is as much of an institutional decision as it is an athletic one.” Williams adds: “They had studied this for two years, so we knew exactly what we needed to do as far as scholarships and facilities. So now, with both of us being new, we are looking at everything. We are looking at facilities. (We are) looking at our scholarships. We are looking at NIL. We are looking at the personnel we are going to need. We are looking at physical infrastructure and improvements that we need, from the locker rooms to the business offices. So, we are taking our time but are looking at every aspect of intercollegiate athletics to see what we need to do to take it to the next level.” Ransdell accepts that “we have some work to do on the budget, and that is going to take filling our stadiums routinely. And then pricing ourselves appropriately, FBS is a different price point than FCS … “In my last two institutions, we really increased the bar to sell a lot more season tickets at Appalachian State. We sold out our season tickets for the last three seasons. And so that is my expectation here long-term.” (link)

After multiple teams have forfeited volleyball games against San Jose State – presumably but not stated publicly because the Spartans’ roster includes a purported transgender student-athlete – USA Today’s Dan Wolken observes that college athletics leaders remain stymied by the issue of transgender participation. One person with close ties to NCAA volleyball tells him: “None of these schools know how to deal with this. Administrations are not comfortable handling these situations. They’re constantly worried about getting sued, and within teams there’s a wide swath of opinions about what they should do. … They're leaving it up to the kids and the coaches to figure it out, and if and when it explodes, it’s like, 'Oh, I guess we have a (expletive) powder keg on our hands.'” Wolken notes that in this case, the “powder keg exploded despite the fact that the player in question (who has not publicly identified as transgender but was outed by a website in April) had already played at San Jose State for two seasons without incident and another school prior to that.” Further, Wolken observes that the lack of guidance at the highest levels has led to a situation where even when “one of the three teams [who’ve forfeited] wanted to play, according to two people with knowledge of the situation, political pressure turned the tide in forcing Wyoming to forfeit.” Ironically, the Spartans’ forfeit-aided 9-1 record could help them earn an NCAA Tournament berth, at which point Wolken believes no school would forfeit. “That contradiction highlights the fundamental problem with this particular issue and the panic over trans athletes in general: Are people really thinking this through?” Lots more. Dollars & Sense…
+ Nilly, the NIL company co-founded by NBA veteran Kendrick Perkins which pays student-athletes upfront for the exclusive use of their NIL for up to seven years, is raising some red flags among a group of consumer finance experts. Scout Co-Founder/CEO Michael Haddix Jr., for instance, tells ESPN’s Dan Murphy: "To me it feels like you are preying on people who need the capital now and using that to cloud their focus on the future. It feels predatory, and it's capitalizing on young people who need money and haven't thought through the long-term implications." Nilly Co-Founder Chris Ricciardi counters: “There's no interest rate. There's no requirement to pay back. It's purely a licensing deal. I would be surprised if those people thought that music advances were high-interest loans." Murphy notes that according to Nilly’s contracts, if an athlete doesn't earn enough NIL money within the contracted time frame for Nilly to recoup its investment, he or she is not responsible to pay back any part of the upfront money. … In the case of the contract obtained by ESPN, the player could end up giving Nilly the equivalent of a $75K fee in exchange for the guarantee of and immediate access to $50K up front. If the player makes nothing in NIL deals over the seven years of the contract, Nilly loses its $50K investment. If the player earns $200K in deals during the contract, Nilly receives $50K and recoups its initial investment. If the player earns $500K, Nilly receives $125K – recouping its initial investment, plus $75K – the maximum the company can make from the contract.” More. (link)
+ Oklahoma State, in partnership with Doussan Music Group, have sold out four concert dates April 10-13 in Boone Pickens Stadium. Over 180,764 tickets have been sold to see headliners The Turnpike Troubadours and Cross Canadian Ragweed along with several other acts. According to Pokes Report, the concerts are expected to bring in between $3.2M and $3.5M for OSU’s NIL efforts. (link)
