The WAC has appointed Deputy Commissioner Rebekah Ray as Interim Commissioner following the departure of Commissioner Brian Thornton. Tarleton State President/WAC Board of Directors Chair James Hurley: “Over the past several years Brian Thornton has demonstrated exceptional leadership for the WAC, bringing innovative ideas and a collaborative spirit to our membership during a challenging time in college athletics. We wholeheartedly wish him the best as he embarks on his next professional chapter. The WAC has thrived for over 60 years, and we are excited to continue building a bright future for the league together. … Rebekah possesses a deep understanding of the intricate workings and dynamics of the conference with her experience from both the member campus and league office sides of the table. Her exceptional leadership is invaluable to our member institutions.” (link)

One last nugget from yesterday’s Big Ten-SEC meetings, as Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti said of the future College Football Playoff format: “I’ve been pretty consistent about this. I want to see, not only what’s any impact on the regular season, I want to see what November football looks like. I want to see the selection process, actually how it works. How the seeding works. How will they evaluate and compare teams? I think that’s all fair to do. You can have a lot of situations where teams are going to be bunched.” (link)

Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich takes a deeper look into Sacramento State’s efforts to move up to FBS and notes that President Luke Wood and AD Mark Orr have led an effort over the past 14 months which they are now publicizing. Specifically, the Hornets have announced “plans for a new, 25,000-seat football stadium, a partnership with the Sacramento Kings for men’s and women’s basketball to play in their arena should they reach the FBS level, and $35M in NIL commitments. Since a recent round of realignment opened up spots in the Pac-12 and Mountain West, that dream has become arguably even more realistic,” per Christovich. As far as whether those efforts will pay off, time will tell. Christovich points out that Sac State wouldn’t be able to complete the transition process from FCS to FBS in time for the Pac-12, which needs eight full-time FBS members by 2026; however, the possibility remains that the league will expand further in the future. Meanwhile, Christovich notes the “Mountain West also needs one more FBS member, but it has until 2028 to reach the magic number of eight. In that case, Sacramento State could count as its eighth member. But there’s competition here, too, as the conference has received interest from multiple schools.” When the time does come, Wood says the Hornets will be ready. “We’re not just looking to be an FBS school. We want to be an FBS school that wins.” (link)

Tulane AD David Harris is the latest leader to appeal directly to his fanbase on the need for NIL dollars: “While your direct support of our department, whether by purchasing tickets, giving to the Green Wave Club or joining the Olive & Blue Society remains critical to our growth and well-being, please remember that having a strong Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) collective is also critical to providing opportunities for our student-athletes. [...] Our student-athletes continue to excel on the field and in the classroom and we remain diligent in our resolve to compete for championships. All of our head coaches agree that NIL opportunities, particularly through Fear the Wave Collective, are imperative for future success, so please consider lending your support.” (link)

The Big 12 has a problem in its dearth of hateable teams, according to Awful Announcing’s Ben Koo, who contends that part of the joy of being a college football fan is rooting for upsets over the sport’s Goliaths. “That’s where the Big 12’s problem is. Which conference member would you tune in to watch lose a game? I know the obvious answer is Colorado, but at the end of last year, nobody was watching the Buffaloes lose. There are strong cases to be made that Deion Sanders will not be there within five years, one way or another. Would you still hate-watch Colorado without him coaching there? Would you even care about Colorado? … This past weekend, four college football games garnered over 4M viewers. The Big 12’s most-watched game got just 1.51M. When the smoke clears on this season, I’m not sure any of the top 25 regular season games will include a Big 12 team and no Big 12 conference game may crack the top 40.” Koo goes on to point out that “the most-watched Big 12 games from years past were not only highly watched because Oklahoma and Texas fans tuned in, but other fans tuned in to see which scrappy Big 12 program would knock those Goliaths off. Now it’s just David vs. David. That’s not enough to stand out.” (link)

More on former Colorado Football AC Trevor Reilly’s attempts to secure NIL partnerships with countries in the Middle East, as The Athletic’s Christopher Kamrani reports Reilly first went to Jordan with Ryan Coles, chief scientist of Daigle Labs in Connecticut, who specializes in building business in emerging markets and who also is a business partner with Reilly’s cousin. Coles notes that “in the gulf, they’ve become increasingly interested in sports as a way to elevate themselves, build reputation and attract entertainment and tourism.” Reilly says there was apprehension from Jordanian tourism officials to pursue a deal considering that the war with Israel and Hamas in Gaza could impact tourism in the region. Before Coles and his associates returned to the U.S., they informed some contacts in Riyadh that Reilly was looking to set up further meetings in Saudi Arabia. Coles: “We did our best to let Trevor have an at-bat, and he did swing for the fences.” Reilly did not disclose the identities of all those he met with, but said one 90-minute meeting in Riyadh included two government employees educated at Miami (FL) and Indiana, respectively. They both knew who Deion Sanders was and understood the value of college football in America. Ultimately, nothing came to fruition, but Reilly tells Kamrani: “Me being over there, it doesn’t mean that they were willing to do business. It just means that they understood that this was a possibility. Which, what’s wrong with that, man? … You want to talk about the wild, wild West? I’m surprised more people haven’t gone out to the Middle East. It’s oil money there, or it’s oil money here: T. Boone Pickens at Oklahoma State or T. Boone Muhammad in Riyadh.” More. (link)

Former LSU football student-athlete Greg Brooks is suing the school and its medical center, accusing coaches of inaction and athletic trainers of misdiagnosis. Brooks, whose career ended after he was diagnosed with a brain tumor, claims the coaching staff encouraged him to practice and play while ill by threatening his starting position. He also accuses team trainers of not appropriately diagnosing his condition and refusing for weeks to recommend him to a neurological specialist. Additionally, Brooks is accusing surgeon Brandon Gaynor of performing a surgery that caused “catastrophic neurological injuries” and left him “permanently disabled.” The suit, which holds multiple coaches, including HC Brian Kelly, partially responsible, goes on to assert that LSU disclosed confidential medical information that was “false and misleading;” used his NIL without his consent; and refused to transfer ownership to him of a donation fund in his name through the LSU Tiger Athletic Foundation. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger notes that NCAA policy does exist requiring documentation of qualifying medical expenses for distribution purposes of such funds. LSU responds to the suit in a statement: “While LSU cannot comment on ongoing litigation, Greg Brooks remains in our thoughts and prayers as he continues to work through the rehabilitation process. Since the beginning of our agreement with our Championship Health Partner, Our Lady of the Lake, they have provided exceptional medical care for our student-athletes in all of our sports.” (link)

More on the elimination of the NLI as one Big 12 source tells On3’s Pete Nakos: “It used to be two separate things. Sign the dotted line and get the kid in the building. Then figure out the financials. Now they’re combining it into one thing and that is going to fuck up a ton of signings. This is going to turn into a sh-t show.” Another Big 12 source remarks: “If you got money you’re going to be fine. If you don’t? And you’re giving a bunch of lip service to these kids? [National Signing Day] is where these kids are going to figure out who was telling them the truth and who was full of sh-t.” In fact, multiple sources tell Nakos that National Signing Day “could turn into a financial sweepstakes. If the dollars on paper do not line up, recruits can not sign paperwork and open their recruitment.” A Big 12 HC says this “is the first year that the first, second or third question has been about money. At the high school level that hasn’t been like that. It is now. Before this year high school recruiting was still pretty old school for the most part but now it’s a lot about money. I think this will be big for them and us.” On the flipside, transfers can now be signed by a new school once their names are in the portal, at which point other schools will be prohibited from recruiting communications, thereby making it “extremely difficult for players to decommit or flip their recruitments, a major win for college football programs trying to nail down their roster.” More from Nakos. More from yesterday’s SEC-Big Ten meeting, including this full quote from Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti on proposed super league ideas: “I have yet to see a single thing in any plan that I’ve learned details about that contains things that we couldn’t do ourselves and do with other colleagues. I don’t see anything that’s proprietary that anybody holds, that we would need, that someone else controls to do what they’re talking about. It’s basically schedule more good games, and reorganize the way you play those games, like in terms of just tiering or going across and redoing divisions. Some say conferences can survive. Some say you don’t need conferences. At the end of the day, I think there’s a strong commitment that we have the ability to do all of this ourselves.” And from SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey: “It’s no coincidence that both these efforts (Project Rudy and the College Student Football League) have ramped up their public relations schemes around our meeting. I don’t think there are coincidences in life. And I also don’t think it’s coincidental that they’ve chosen to comment on both Tony and I. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that one of your colleagues produces a little tweet today about we’re going to go around them.” UCLA AD Martin Jarmond called the meetings “productive,” adding: “It’s good to connect and have important conversations with athletic directors who face common challenges. We have a lot of work in front of us in college athletics. I left the meeting energized and enthused.” (link)

On the topic of scheduling more interconference games, Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti noted that "the question is there a structure where the two league offices work together to create more of those matchups? We had a pretty big discussion about the path to play each other more – see if you can figure out how you can actually do it; decide what games you want, how many – but that's a broad discussion." SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, who was in Ann Arbor for the Texas-Michigan game earlier this football season, adds: “Just an incredible experience, and you stand on the sideline prior to kickoff thinking, what if we can do this more with our non-conference games? We respect where we have in-state rivalries that take place in non-conference scheduling, but we had a real general conversation about the what-ifs in football and basketball." Sankey also said of NCAA governance that the “board of directors at the Division I level has to change, and it has to change rapidly. That's the view of my conference membership, our presidents and chancellors. I shared that perspective, but I don't think we're alone. I don't think it's just two conferences that share that." Like UCLA AD Martin Jarmond, Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione called the meetings productive with “considerable time” spent on discussing the House settlement. "It was an opportunity to learn from each other and have important conversations. It was good to get in a room and compare notes with other athletics directors who face common challenges." (link)

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips says of the SEC-Big Ten meetings in Nashville: “I don’t want to read too much into it. I think you have to pay attention, you have to understand what’s happening in order to chart your course. We’ve spent a lot of time together, the four (power conference) commissioners, about how we’re going to move forward with a new structure and governance and we’ve worked collaboratively. I don’t want to be paranoid about anything. I’m pretty level about it, and in all of these things I think there needs to be transparency. That’s how you build trust and that’s how you're able to work together. So we’ll see what comes out of it.” USA Today’s Dan Wolken observes that “the ACC exists in a state of long-term uncertainty, with Phillips playing the happy warrior and constantly talking up his league’s strengths rather than its challenges.” However, he wonders if the league isn’t an equal partner in SEC’s and Big Ten’s conversations “despite all of its success, its history, its major markets and its current success, is it still a power conference? What is its future? Does it have one that even remotely resembles what the ACC has looked like for nearly three-quarters of a century? … The ACC isn't a failing league or business. If anything, it’s never had more to brag about. It wins in every sport. It has its own conference network. It just surpassed $700M in revenue for the first time in a fiscal year. If the schools can’t make this work, the ACC may not be the problem.” (link)

Ohio State AD Ross Bjork says the Buckeyes’ travel budget increased by $2M with the expansion of the Big Ten and says he has concerns beyond the costs. "I think the thing that we have to learn is what toll does it take on our athletes, right?. What is the right amount of travel to go out there? Luckily we only have one trip (out west) for most of our teams. I can't imagine if you're the four West Coast teams and you're going to have multiple trips to the Midwest or let alone the East Coast. … I think we're going to have to assess the next couple years and figure out what's the right rhythm, what's the right approach. This year I think will be a nice learning curve for everyone." (link)

Arizona State AD Graham Rossini joins KJZZ to discuss the evolution of college athletics and its impact on ASU and notes that “we are aware that we need to sophisticate the way that we run the business of an athletic department. And that's all intended to create resources that we can reinvest in the young people. So I think a lot of it's just been using sports business, using, you know, attributes of professional sports, which I spent a lot of time in and bringing that in, in ways that we can drive ticket sales, corporate partnerships, different donor and VIP experiences all with the mindset of creating that we can reinvest into the young people that we're here to serve and, and lead.” Regarding the Big 12’s large geographic footprint, Rossini explains the “benefit of the national conference is starting to bear some fruit where our television ratings are up about 152% year over year. And that's because our games are now on ESPN and Fox and those networks and they're not on a regional sports network. And so the national exposure has been an immediate benefit. And then even having football games in the state of Texas, you can't put a recruiting value on the chance to compete in these recruiting hotbeds in a state like Texas.” More. (link)

Coaches Corner…
+ Missouri Football HC Eli Drinkwitz questions the timing of the decision to eliminate the NLI: “Honestly I’ve got a lotta thoughts on it, but we’re in the middle of a season and I need to make sure my focus is on trying to figure out a way to beat UMass. It’s really hard for head coaches right now to get their players focused and motivated to play on Saturdays while constantly figuring out what new changes are coming down. I mean, today, this morning, I just got word that we no longer have National Letters of Intent. We’re getting blown up by recruits and we don’t have any answers for them. We don’t have answers for the settlement, we don’t have answers for NIL, we don’t have answers for National Letter of Intent; we don’t have a lot of answers right now on the portal.” Asked whether roster management has replaced game planning as the toughest part of HCs’ jobs, Drinkwitz replies: “Well the answer to that question is, do you even know what roster is going to be in future? Because I don’t. The settlement won’t be finalized until April. The settlement has roster limits, which limits the number of scholarships you can have. Or, not limit; it actually doesn’t limit scholarships but it limits the number on the roster you can have. But we don’t know what any of that looks like moving forward. So, yeah, trying to build a team when you don’t know what the rules of that will look like is pretty difficult.” (link)
+ Auburn Football HC Hugh Freeze welcomes the reduction of the transfer portal from 45 days to 30 and adds: “I wish it was only seven days. I don’t think it should be that long. I think all the coaches agree with that. But the length of that is still too long. I’m glad it’s shortened some.” Freeze also says tampering is already prevalent this season: “We’ve created a world that’s not real healthy, I don’t think, for our sport. But yet, we as coaches still have the opportunity to impact a lot of kids and a lot of lives and do a great job. We’re all blessed to have very good jobs, it’s just sad that some of it is tainted by so many different things that have changed it so drastically that I don’t think teach great life lessons.” (link)

Their ongoing support was very helpful to ensure it was a smooth process in light of how challenging transitions can be.” (link)

Learfield introduces the Fanbase Fan Report, a “comprehensive deep dive into the demographics, behaviors, and affinities of 150M+ college fans.” The report also shares insights on NIL sentiment, fan engagement, and emerging trends within the industry. As an industry, college sports has the biggest fanbase in all of sports at 195M. There are 8x more men’s college basketball games on TV than the NBA, 8.2x more women’s basketball games televised than the WNBA and 3.8x more college football games TV than the NFL. Furthermore, 98 of the top 100 designated market areas (DMAs) are represented by DI teams compared to 42 represented by the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB. Additionally, the report states that “college sports fans are the most avid sports fans in the world. 45% report being ‘very interested’ in three or more sports. While this overlaps with some pro sports, the most engaged college sports fans show significantly more interest in college sports, as measured by their game attendance, merchandise purchases, and game viewing/listening habits, than their professional counterparts.” (link, link - full report)
