RIT AD Jacqueline Nicholson and Coastal Carolina (DI) Assoc. AD for Academic Services Alise Svihla sit down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown at the 2024 NACDA Convention to reflect on their decades-long relationship and the role genuine connections play in advancing in college athletics. Svihla and Nicholson, who met as undergraduates, share insight into evaluating opportunities and making career changes, discuss burnout and offer advice for administrators looking to advance into a leadership role via the Academic Services unit. Svihla acknowledges she reached the point of burnout while at South Carolina and took a career development post on campus before accepting a job to return to her alma mater, Virginia Tech, “and then I wanted to be a director. I kind of felt like I had outgrown my role working with the day-to-day study halls, so I was excited to move into that next role to be a director, but I was really strategic about where I wanted to be a director.” Nicholson on managing people: “I think it’s based on relationships. Once people know me, know what makes me tick, know what makes me happy, and when I know the same things about them, we can get along we can coexist at a high level and I can let you kind of run with what you're doing and not have these crazy expectations. I tell my staff here if…they do their jobs, I'm going to be a happy person. If I ask your why and you don't have a why, we'll have a problem. But all my staff can tell you their why and why they make decisions.” (link)

U.S. Coast Guard Academy AD Dan Rose and Alumni Association VP of Development Bob McKenna sit down with Collegiate Sports Associates’ Steph Garcia Cichosz to talk about the academy’s search for its first Executive Director of the new Coast Guard Academy Athletic Corporation. The corporation was formed in December after a change in the law that will allow the academy, through this corporation, to generate new revenue and, as Rose states: “do a lot more things, in much more similar in vain to what the Division I federal service academies are doing in Army, Navy and Air Force – the ability to treat appropriated dollars like non-appropriated dollars, to do a facility rental and have the funds come directly back to Athletics, run camps and clinics, sponsorships and a lot of other things.” McKenna on what this leader will need to be able to: “Really what we need is for somebody to come in and lead us through that startup phase, so somebody that can assess quickly what we've already set up, modify as needed and continue to build this thing, as I say it's like building an aircraft while it's flying and that's okay. We've got a great team of support with the board of directors and I think a lot of people around campus are looking forward to seeing this succeed, not the least of which is the superintendent.” More on Connect. Alfred’s $30M Saxon Hill Sports Complex project is on track to be completed in December 2025 for athletics to move in spring 2026. To date, more than $10M has been raised. Once completed, the complex will serve as the competition or practice home for many AU programs. The project is expected to help grow student-athlete enrollment by 170 over the first six years. The NCAA has released the results of its study of online harassment of college athletes. The study was conducted in partnership with Signify Group, which used its Threat Matrix to monitor public comments targeting the online profiles of student-athletes, coaches and officials participating in seven NCAA championships and the College Football Playoff National Championship. The study flagged more than 72K messages identified by Signify’s algorithm from a wider dataset of 1.3M posts/comments targeted at the social media profiles of the aforementioned participants and found that 18% of all abuse was sexual, making it the most prevalent type of abuse used to target male and female student-athletes. 12% of all abuse was related to sports betting, with more than 740 instances. As betting markets increased, so did the prevalence of harassment, with 19% rates in men's basketball and football. Some abuse flagged in other categories indicated that the posts were betting-related. Additionally, 10% of abuse consisted of racist content; 9% of abuse was homophobic/transphobic; 6% of abuse, approximately 380 instances, was violent; 80% of the abuse in the study was directed at March Madness student-athletes; and women's basketball student-athletes received approximately three times more threats than men's basketball student-athletes. NCAA President Charlie Baker: "I've heard too many student-athletes talk about abusive messages they have received, and for the first time ever, we now have evidence of the scale at which this is occurring. It's incredibly alarming and completely unacceptable. Fans have to do better, social media companies have to do more to identify and remove this content, and we all need reminders about responsible social media usage. … We will exhaust all options to reduce the harassment and vitriol student-athletes are experiencing too often today."
