SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey joined the Paul Finebaum Show yesterday and said of the meetings with the Big Ten and the landscape overall: “I think we have a responsibility to continue to make progress. If we can do that with people, that's much healthier and I think [Big Ten Commissioner] Tony [Petitti] and I are both attentive to our conferences, to our working relationship with each other, and our working relationship with the people around us and will continue to be. And if we can bring people into problem-solving, I mean in a big way in Division I, I think that's success. And that's a bit of the opportunity in front of us. In fact, the conversations and the points of outreach I've had today – which, there were two other points this week from others kind of not in that Autonomy 4 group that I think indicate the health of conversations and relationships still being important.” (link); Sankey yesterday also addressed the status of expanding the hoops tournaments: “We were briefed as commissioners in the summertime about what I would call incremental growth. Whether that’s possible or not remains to be seen. … Obviously, we have a format this year, the NCAA has contracts that do go for a while. I expect that discussion and work would continue. My general view is interested and supportive of that discussion. I am curious about the format that might be proposed, if there is growth, how those teams are decided, how those teams are assigned.” Also: “I would contextualize this, people will talk about this should never change. I’ve seen plenty of that feedback. You continue to see changes around Division I, from conference membership, new members in new places. I think that discussion is the right discussion given the time we’re in.” (link)

Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez met with reporters during the league’s basketball media day and said: “Eight is the magic number for the NCAA and it's anchored in football language, but really for us basketball, because of who we are, is super important. And we're going to continue to analyze that and if there are opportunities out there that make us stronger, we're going to jump on them. … We’re going to take some time over these next couple weeks. We’ve been looking at membership since I started in 2023. So, it's not like we're starting from scratch. We have all the data, we have all the information, so [it’s] just really making informed decisions. But, like I said, those things that make us stronger in the areas we want to continue to grow and expand [in], we’ll continue to explore those.” (link)

Eastern Illinois AD Tom Michael is not in favor of the House settlement in its current form but adds: “I also don’t think we’re moving forward thinking that’s going to change.” Michael also remarks that “if the Power 4 schools want to go do what they want to do, [I say] go do it. But in the FCS world and non-football playing schools, we’re going to manage this in a different way. [The Power 4] might have a lot of different rules than us, so we’re going to try to do something different over here. … We still want to have access to championships, we still want to have revenue share, we need to have some say in some governance. But the governance really is, we still want to qualify for the championships and somehow have revenue share. Otherwise, if [the Power 4] wants to have revenue share in terms of individuals, go do it. If you want to pay your players, go do it.” Michael says of reports that Power 4 programs may no longer play FCS teams: “The question you would ask is, ‘Is Michigan really only going to have six home games?’ They need seven or eight home games financially to make it work.” (link)

Michigan State’s matchup with Michigan in football next week will mark MSU’s fifth consecutive night game and seventh of the season, and Spartans AD Alan Haller says at “some point, enough is enough.” Haller adds: "I mean, I'm a fan of a few prime-time games, but I'll admit, I'm a fan, too. There's a lot that goes into especially home night games. You've got people coming from at least a four-hour radius. That can be very, very long days. It's a challenge. It's something that I've had conversations with the conference office about. One of the things that needs to be clear: People wonder how much input I have. I don't have much, if any." The Detroit News’ Tony Paul notes that under the terms of its TV deal, MSU is “limited to five night games a season. However, that doesn't include its own scheduling moves – like Haller moving the season opener against Florida Atlantic to Friday night, August 30, because MSU fans have gotten used to that little Labor Day weekend tradition. Those limits also don't include out-of-conference scheduling, like the game at Boston College on September 21.” Haller: “I do want to play our fair share. However, let's make this thing, spread it out a little bit. Move to some other schools." (link)

The D1.dossier for Lehigh is ready, for those of you interested in leading the charge in Bethlehem. William & Mary AD Brian Mann: “It allowed me to focus on prep work, and not the research needed to pull it together. Worth every penny!” (link)

Hawai’i has launched the "Ascension into the Mountain West Conference" campaign, which will be a central part of a larger giving week celebration during Homecoming. Rainbow Warriors AD Craig Angelos: "As we elevate our programs to compete at a higher level, donor support will be essential to our success both now and in the future. We invite all fans and supporters to find a way to get involved--especially through our MWC Ascension Fund." (link)

College Hockey Insider’s Mike McMahon shares what he’s heard from coaches and NHL officials about the NCAA’s new rule allowing CHL players to play in college and notes: “A few coaches pointed out how easy it will be geographically for certain programs to recruit CHL players. Mercyhurst has the Erie Otters (OHL) in their backyard. Niagara (OHL) is not far from Niagara or Canisius. RIT isn't that far away, either. St. Lawrence and Clarkson are less than two hours from the Kingston Frontenacs (OHL) and Ottawa 67's (OHL). Vermont is less than two hours from several QMJHL teams.” One coach says: "If I am one of those programs, I can recruit those leagues and it doesn't cost me anything other than time. It's not a huge piece of the recruiting budget. I don't need a flight. I barely need a hotel. You're not just seeing one team. You're seeing that one team that's close to you, plus every other team in that league that goes through that town." Another coach notes that from what he’s observed, “a top-six player in the OHL would be a top-six player in the USHL.” Still, he asks: “How many of them are eligible and want to go to college?” Yet another coach tells McMahon: “It's going to become a lot harder for American-born players to play college hockey. There are 1,000 Canadian kids, who are all pretty good and were all ineligible before who are now eligible." Meanwhile, an NHL exec remarks: "I'll be honest, I don't know yet what this means for our organization. The NHL, the [NHLPA], and the CHL will have to sort a lot out with their agreement. That's what will ultimately impact [NHL teams] more than anything else. I'll say this: a lot of players coming out of the CHL at 19 or 20 years old aren't ready for the AHL. If there is another place for those players to go to develop, and we maintain their rights if they're drafted, that seems like a positive on paper." More. (link)

Creighton is set to debut a new basketball court this season. The court will feature six numbers on the west sideline, three in front of each bench, to recognize retired jersey numbers, the year 1916 inside the midcourt Bluejay logo to denote the school’s first year in intercollegiate basketball, Heritage logos to honor Creighton's history and more. The court was designed by GLGR out of Beaverton, Oregon, and produced by Ledford Sports Floors out of Jenks, Oklahoma. Bluejays AD Marcus Blossom: "We wanted to make this court uniquely Creighton. It was important for us to honor our storied basketball tradition along with our Jesuit values while also injecting a bit of new energy to the design. I hope we struck the right balance." (link)

A decade after penning an essay in favor of legalizing sports gambling, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver says he doesn’t “regret writing that op-ed piece and being in favor of legalized sports betting. I still think you can't turn the clock back. I think, as I said at the time, with the advent of the internet, widely available sports betting online…that we had to deal directly with technology and recognize that if we don't legalize sports betting, people are going to find ways to do it illegally. … I was in favor of a federal framework for sports betting. I still am. I still think that the hodgepodge of state by state, it makes it more difficult for the league to administer it. I think it creates competition, understandably, among states to get -- just think New York, New Jersey or a situation like that where you're both competing for the same customer so you can compete on tax rates and other things and a regulatory framework.” Silver admits there are downsides to sports gambling and calls former Toronto Raptor Jontay Porter’s actions last season a “cardinal sin,” adding: "We take this very seriously. As I said sort of day one, it's not a huge business for us in terms of a revenue stream into the league, but it makes a big difference in engagement. It's something that people clearly enjoy doing. I'd put it in the category of other things in society that I wouldn't criminalize them, but on the other hand that you have to heavily regulate them because if there's not guardrails, people will run afoul and create issues, problems for themselves, potentially for their families or for operations like us." The Department of Education this week began the second phase of beta-testing for the 2025-26 FAFSA and so far the “test-drive is going smoothly,” according to The Chronicle of Higher Education’s Eric Hoover. FAFSA Executive Director Jeremy Singer says the first phase was “a complete success” and “the system is working from end to end.” Though the testing revealed bugs, as expected, Singer says none were “critical errors.” According to the department’s list of updates on FAFSA-testing, 60 forms submitted in early October were initially rejected, mostly due to a missing student or parent signature: “The Department recognizes this is an ongoing issue from 2024–25 and we continue to explore ways to decrease these rejections, especially with better prompting for student and parent signatures.” Singer notes that students whose FAFSAs were rejected were able to correct and resubmit the form. “A modest uptick in fall enrollment will not be enough to stem intensifying pressure for many U.S. colleges heading into next year and likely beyond,” according to Fitch Ratings analysts during a webinar yesterday. Fitch Ratings Senior Director/U.S. Public Finance Higher Education and Nonprofit Head Emily Wadhwani says some “flagship public institutions, selective private institutions, and HBCUs are achieving record enrollment numbers. Conversely, many smaller, less selective colleges continue to see their enrollment decline.” Lower demand, analysts say, will keep tuition increases in check and have already increased institutional discounting levels. Wadhwani: “Discounting is at its steepest for every incoming freshman class, which then becomes a trailing reference point as those students head towards graduation.” From Fitch: “While most Fitch-rated colleges maintain Stable Outlooks, downward Outlook revisions have risen over the last several quarters. This could indicate more downgrades are ahead, particularly for colleges unable to maintain positive operating performance, as well as erode financial resources. Rating Outlooks vary by geographic region, with far less stress evident in the South compared to the Midwest and Northeast.” Also from Wadhwani: “We do expect the sector to yield generally softer operating margins and continue to show some strains on financial flexibility as we head into 2025.” (link, link)

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips tells ESPN’s David Hale league officials are talking about the implementation of several components of the House settlement, including cap management and the NIL clearinghouse. “I think part of what schools are trying to decide is what's their level of capacity from a compensation standpoint? I think all of them want to provide the resources necessary to have really successful programs. … I feel good about the progress that we're making, and then nationally, we continue to meet with all of our peer conferences on how to set this thing up in a way that makes a lot of sense. For example, when you talk about cap management, it's got to be a transparent process. It’s got to be easy to kind of navigate. It follows a little bit about what you see in the professional sports, whether it’s the NFL or Major League Baseball.” Phillips says institutions will have to decide what level of engagement they have with collectives post-House, but believes a “majority of the focus will be on the House case.” (link)

CBS’ Dennis Dodd profiles College Football Playoff Executive Director Richard Clark and observes: “By hiring Clark, the presidents may have signaled they don't particularly want a change agent – they want a manager. Tell that to Clark. He likes to ‘murder board.’ That's a corporate and military term for throwing an idea up on the white erase board and letting staff pick it apart. Some form of that will happen in the CFP offices.” Clark: "You take your plan, and you get an audience of experts. You brief it and you let them murder you on the stage. They pick it apart. The smallest details, they murder board it. … It's the old Mike Tyson quote, 'Everybody's got a plan until they get punched in the mouth.'" One FBS commissioner tells Dodd: "What we do is not rocket science. [Clark] was able to pick up the nuances of the process. You don't have to have all the answers, but you have to know how you're going to bring the organization through." Dodd points out the job has slowly changed since former Executive Director Bill Hancock’s tenure began, and one former selection committee member remarks: "It seems as though the human element is slowly being squeezed out … Now it looks as though Greg and Tony [SEC commissioner Greg Sankey and Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti] are trying to set up a system where the only thing that matters is the strength of schedule. They want to be able to have a baseline argument." As far as the CFP’s selection process goes, Clark isn’t willing to make any of the metrics public “because when you start putting hard numbers down, you take the art of it [away]. There's a science and an art, right? It's got to be balanced. That human element you don't want to tie that down with metrics. You want those members to use their experience. … You've got to untie them a little bit.” (link)

Tennessee AD Danny White joins 99.1 The Sports Animal and says of the Vols’ talent fee: “Resources going to student-athletes is a good thing and we embrace that. I know our fans embrace that, and I think because of the size of our fan base it can be a huge competitive advantage for us. … The talent fee has gone over really well, as well as you could hope for. We never like to raise prices, but just looking at the data we have, I think it's less than 300 responses on that outreach to our season ticket holders compared to a price increase we did a couple years ago [where] there was about 3,000. So, I think our fans get it is what that information tells me. They understand that the set of circumstances were in. We’re not asking them to take the whole load in terms of the new financial burden, we’re asking to help participate in it. And they're doing that, and the renewals are going really good…but we still have a lot of work to do. The athletic department is going to look at all of our expenses and see where we can trim, be more efficient, to meet this new financial goal and where we can add revenue in other areas as well.” White says the ambiguity of NIL allows ill-intentioned runners and agents to operate and creates an unhealthy environment. Coaches and student-athletes, he continues, deserve better. “Hopefully we’re towards the end of all this ambiguity and gray area and we can get to a smarter, more sensible path in this next chapter.” (link)

More from former Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick’s sitdown with Athletes.org Co-Founder Jim Cavale, as Swarbrick agrees there is an “enormous” opportunity to generate more revenue by bringing college football under one umbrella with one media deal and one centralized scheduling system. “I think the forces driving towards that grow every day. What you're seeing now of Florida State and Clemson are sort of the canary in the coal mine in terms of schools saying, ‘Wait a second, the equal distribution model may not reflect value here.’ And you’re going to see more and more of that. … Let’s have a centralized approach to the sport. Still keep conferences, still keep rivalries, but we can place something on top of that, in addition to that, which captures the value, recognizes the different contributions of schools to the model and puts us on a much more sustainable financial path.” Cavale also believes there will be “more Clemsons and Florida States” as football programs that drive the most revenue grow tired of distributing revenue equally. “For the other teams in those conferences what you have to realize is if it was centralized you probably would still make more, too. You just wouldn't make as much as the top schools. And the smaller schools would make more and we need them to make more because they're a big part of this, too. … It’s something that is gaining momentum and will only gain momentum in a compound manner, I think, in the next 12 to 24 months.” Swarbrick adds that this model is “central” to Congress’ message that lawmakers want to help but only after college athletics can illustrate what it’s willing to do differently. NCAA Football Secretary-Rules Editor Steve Shaw, in collaboration with the Football Rules Committee, issued an interpretation involving defensive teams participating with more than 11 players in the final two minutes of a half. “After the two-minute timeout in either half, if the defense commits a substitution foul and 12 or more players are on the field and participate in a down, officials will penalize the defense for the foul and, at the option of the offended team, reset the game clock back to the time displayed at the snap. The game clock will then restart on the next snap. If the 12th defender was attempting to exit but was still on the field at the snap and had no influence on the play, then the normal substitution penalty of 5 yards would be enforced with no clock adjustment.” Shaw: "Football is a very dynamic game. Occasionally there are specific situations where committing a penalty can give a team an advantage. A guiding principle of the NCAA Football Rules Committee is that there should be no benefit when a team commits a penalty. The goal of this in-season interpretation is to eliminate a potential clock advantage for committing a substitution foul and take away any gain for the defense if they violate the substitution rule." UNLV Football HC Barry Odom leads the way in USA Today’s list of college football’s most underpaid coaches. USA Today’s Paul Myerberg: “Set to earn $1.75M in total compensation this year, third among Mountain West head coaches, Odom is almost certainly set for a raise given the program’s unprecedented success through the first month of his second season. Last year’s team won nine games for the first time since 1984, won five games at home for the first time since 2000 and reached a bowl game for the first time in a decade, making Odom the Rebels’ first Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year finalist. This year’s squad is the first in program history to crack the Coaches Poll.” Others on the list include Toledo HC Jason Candle, San Jose State HC Ken Niumatalolo, Indiana HC Curt Cignetti and Utah HC Kyle Whittingham. (link); USA Today has also published a fully updated database with Football HC salaries. Georgia HC Kirby Smart leads all coaches with total pay of over $13.2M, followed by Clemson HC Dabo Swinney ($11.1M), Texas HC Steve Sarkisian ($10.6M), USC HC Lincoln Riley ($10.04M), Ohio State HC Ryan Day ($10.02M) and Florida State HC Mike Norvell and Alabama HC Kalen DeBoer ($10M). The arrival of NIL has provided coaches with another tool in their discipline tool belts, one that has a less deleterious effect on the team than a suspension. Specifically, coaches are increasingly fining players for misbehavior, and one power conference AD tells USA Today’s Dan Wolken: “We think it’s effective. We think it’s gotten [players’] attention.” Former Murray State/Boise State/Arkansas/Ole Miss Football HC Houston Nutt wishes an option would’ve been available during his career, recalling a game during his time at Arkansas: "I met with the team 48 hours prior to the game — just myself and them — and I said, ‘Hey guys, let's be in bed [early].’ Then my starting kicker goes and gets a DUI that night.” Nutt ended up suspending the kicker and consequently passed on multiple field-goal opportunities, including one from 36 yards. Arkansas lost 22-21 and Nutt has regretted the decision since. “I hurt a good team. I even had a couple seniors come to me before the game and say, 'Hey Coach, if you let him go on the trip we’ll take responsibility and run him for you. We’ll make him throw up Sunday. I’d give anything to have said, ‘That’s a great idea.’” Nutt goes on to say to Wolken: “I think the majority of coaches would say, ‘This is basically the NFL now.’ And the bottom line is they're getting paid money, they’re employees, so you’re going to treat them like that. What hits them isn’t so much running a stadium — though I'm sure they still do that — but it’s the pocketbook. I can see where that would be a real motivator.” (link)

Former Kentucky Swimming HC Gary Conelly has been dropped as a defendant from a Title IX lawsuit filed against the school concerning alleged misconduct within the swimming & diving program. Plaintiffs’ attorney Megan Bonanni: "The plaintiffs in this case voluntarily dismissed Gary Conelly from the lawsuit. However, this does not absolve him of any misconduct. Instead, it shifts the responsibility for his actions to his former employer, the University of Kentucky. We fully expect Mr. Conelly to serve as a key witness in our case against the University of Kentucky, Lars Jorgensen, and Mitch Barnhart." (link)

The Tennessee-focused Volunteer Club has launched Rock Media, a free-to-access media network across social media platforms such as X, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and Facebook. The collective partnered with The College Sports Company and NOCAP Sports to launch the network, which will feature content such as behind-the-scenes footage of Tennessee athletics, conversations with current and former athletes, and at least three podcasts. One podcast series will feature interviews with current players while the other two are still in the works. … The College Sports Company will handle day-to-day operations of the network while NOCAP Sports will oversee advertising and sponsorship sales, according to SBJ’s Irving Mejia-Hilario, who also reports The Volunteer Club, The College Sports Company and NOCAP Sports will each own an undisclosed stake in Rock Media. The College Sports Company Co-Founder/Chief Media Officer Adam Breneman expects the network to add at least $1M in revenue for The Volunteer Club in its first year, the “majority” of which will go to the collective. Breneman: “We already have a pipeline of advertisers and sponsors with multiple six-figures deals in the pipeline. So, I give Tennessee a lot of credit for moving fast on it and taking the leap. … We [The College Sports Company] don’t believe in paywalled content. The upside is just too minimal. We want this to be where fans go for content and to get to know the players better and where brands can get access to athletes to sell their products and services.” (link)

Virginia is expanding its partnership with EvoShield to create seven different baseball uniform looks for the Cavaliers in 2025, including the introduction of a new uniform combination. Hoos HC Brian O’Connor: “EvoShield knows baseball. Seven of the eight programs in the 2024 College World Series, including us, are EvoShield partners, so it makes sense for us to build on our relationship with a company that has baseball in its DNA. Being baseball-focused, EvoShield brings a level of design and understanding about what today’s college players want in uniforms and apparel that we haven’t previously experienced.” (link)

The company has grown its revenue by 85% year-over-year, and we’ve seen the business of sports become a mainstay in the media industry. RedBird IMI is focused on investing in cross-platform media companies that are breaking news, driving the cultural conversation, and capturing audiences in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
