The Big East is looking for a supplemental media rights package that would include around 30 men’s basketball games (primarily early-season matchups), 75 women’s basketball games and “select Olympic sports events not otherwise included in the primary package,” according to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy. Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman tells Portnoy: “These [media rights] deals are the lifeblood of any sports league, whether it's pro or college. They afford exposure, national exposure, revenue -- which is critically important to operations -- and they afford credibility.” (link)

Florida Gulf Coast AD Colin Hargis in response to a question about whether the House settlement will only further separate the haves from the have-nots remarked: “It could. You know it could. I think it’s going to be really interesting. When you look at college athletics at the highest level, when you look at the Power 4 conferences, the interesting dynamic for them when you talk about revenue sharing, you talk about the House settlement payments, things of that nature, they’re potentially staring down $20-30M dollars a year that they’re going to have to generate. … The rich are definitely going to have the opportunity. The Power 4 are definitely going to have an opportunity to generate and do more. But it’s also going to cost them much more to operate at that highest level.” Hargis goes on to say that “in a perfect world we wouldn’t be part of that, right? We wouldn’t have to pay the debt of others. When you talk about the House settlement, it’s roughly 90-95% of those back payments are going to football players and men’s and women’s basketball players at the highest level from 2016-2021. So on one hand it's unfortunate, right? I’d love to keep those resources in our pocket and be able to utilize it to help our athletic department and what we’re doing here for our student-athletes.” However, he continues: “You look at those universities and where they’re going to have to divert those resources and specifically into football, what does that mean? Is there an opportunity for FGCU athletics and our athletic programs to gain ground in this landscape? And for me that answer is yes. This is where we make our move.” (link)

Indiana is realizing the benefits of its undefeated start to the football season, and Hoosiers AD Scott Dolson tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “We saw a decent increase [in ticket sales after Football HC Curt Cignetti’s hiring]. But then it's just grown every week as the team has performed and as people kind of see what we're all about.” IU has announced sellouts for this week's contest against Nebraska and the November 9 matchup with Michigan, and Dolson says: “We expect a few more sellouts the remainder of the season. ... It's great to announce a sellout, but we're trying to set that bar. That's what we want. The more [we win], our expectation moving forward is that we want those crowds to continue to be strong.” According to Peegs.com, the Hoosiers had only sold out eight football games this century before this season, four of which had come since 2017. Tennessee Chancellor Donde Plowman discusses her strident opposition to the NCAA regarding its NIL infractions case against UT earlier this year: “I felt for one thing that we had cooperated with them to the fullest. That’s an understatement – we did the investigation of Jeremy Pruitt and all the stuff that was going on then we did that and we handed it to them and said we'll take our licks. And we went to the hearing. I spoke at that hearing passionately then that I thought it would be really wrong to give us a postseason ban, but we want to be accountable. We are accountable. And so we did not get a postseason ban, but we got a $10M fine, we’re on probation for five years. That was very significant and we participated because what we did was wrong at the time. … On the other hand, the second time they came back around I felt like it was completely unfair that they were attempting to accuse and potentially punish us for something that we didn’t do. So I felt like I needed to speak out and one of the major reasons was I wanted the public to understand what was happening. Because once the NCAA charges you with something, you can’t speak about it.” Plowman says she sought a conversation between “the head of the NCAA,” Vols AD Danny White and herself, but that didn’t happen, so she wrote a letter. “I needed a way to be able to speak.” In discussing the important role athletics plays for the university writ large, Plowman explains that after UT beat Alabama in football two years ago it received 2K applications from out of state within 24 hours. She also says the College World Series provided 24 hours of “the best marketing for a university.” (link)

UCLA AD Martin Jarmond expresses confidence in Bruins Football HC DeShaun Foster, telling the Los Angeles Times’ Ben Bolch: “Growth isn’t linear, and it’s not always reflected in the record, but the guys are playing hard and we’re getting better and they’re going to keep working hard, and so we’ve got to keep swinging and keep pushing forward. … I think DeShaun has done a good job considering all of the circumstances surrounding this season. With every sport, you always look at it in a totality perspective and playing the toughest schedule in the country with a new conference, a new staff, a lot going on, and the student-athletes have fought hard every game and I think DeShaun is accountable, he’s very self-aware, I talk to him regularly and I like the way that he’s approaching the season and working with our young men each and every week.” Jarmond goes on to say: “I can see the progress we’re making. I have an appreciation for the work that’s being put in and I think eventually it will pay off. The young men are working hard and the staff is working hard and I think we’re going to keep pushing forward this season.” (link)

Despite a statement from its student-athletes saying they were forfeiting the match, Nevada intends to play its upcoming volleyball match against San Jose State. A statement from the athletic department reads, in part: “The players’ decision also does not represent the position of the university. The university intends to move forward with the match as scheduled, and the players may choose not to participate in the match on the day of the contest. No players will be subject to any team disciplinary action for their decision not to participate in the match.” (link); Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has since released a statement in support of the student-athletes which reads, in part: “The student athletes at the University of Nevada, Reno have determined that they do not want to play against San Jose State, and I wholeheartedly respect the decision of the players. No student-athlete should ever be pressured to play a game where they don’t feel safe — period.” Full statement. (link)

A Penn State fan paid $1,800 to take advantage of a USC offer through which fans can run out of the tunnel with the players before games. The Athletic’s Audrey Snyder: “The guy who ran out of the tunnel is named Jordan. We talked tonight. He’s from Northern California. 2013 Penn State alum. Paid $1,800 for this experience with his wife. They showed up decked out in PSU gear — didn’t try to hide it — and USC didn’t try to stop them. It started as a joke. They looked for the fine print before signing up and paying online…. But said there wasn’t any.” Jordan: “I don’t think about my $1,800 bucks helping Lincoln Riley. I think about my $1,800 bucks creating experiences for us that will last a lifetime.” What was the response from Trojans players? Jordan says: “I think some of them were confused. At one point I looked at Claire, my wife, and was like I think they want to punch us. I don’t wanna get punched by them. They’re very big people.” Snyder notes that “as of Tuesday evening, USC has now added some parameters to paying to run out of the tunnel with the home team.” (link)

The Northwestern-focused TrueNU collective has partnered with Dropback, a “new venture-backed company, [which] aims to disrupt college sports and give athletic departments a competitive edge in scouting, roster creation, and player valuation,” according to NIL Daily’s Noah Henderson, who adds: “Dropback is a graduate of the Y Combinator, a program that has supported companies like Airbnb, Instacart, Twitch, Dropbox, and many more unicorn tech startups. According to Dropback CEO Luke Bogus, the software looks to give athlete departments pro-level functionality in three key areas: Calculate: Powered by a first-of-its-kind DIY Valuation Modeler, Dropback enables College GMs to value their athletes their way – via custom metrics, baselines, and weights. Construct: Optimize roster construction and spend with infinite budgets, versions, and rosters that update in real-time. Compete: Compare athletes across active rosters, the transfer portal, and high school head-to-head — with teams’ custom models — to build the most competitive roster within the bounds of your budget.” TrueNU Executive Director Jacob Schmidt says the company stands out in large part due to its ability to customize. “It is the ability to build out an algorithm that is unique to the values of your place and your programs. There are certain metrics that everybody across the country will want to involve in determining a player's value. Those are the obvious ones. But every institution, program, athletic department, and coach has some nuance to what they're building… What this software allows you to do is build out a custom mathematical, data-driven approach to how you're deploying dollars.” More. Hawaii will leave the Big West to become a full member of the Mountain West beginning July 1, 2026. With the move, UH will no longer pay travel subsidies to the Mountain West in football and will leave behind travel subsidies it paid to Big West schools in most other team sports. Rainbow Warriors AD Craig Angelos: “Certainly they'll go away on the Big West side, and on the Mountain West side, they're going away also. So that's a big win for us to finally get out from underneath paying travel subsidies for our conference competition to come out to play us.” Angelos notes the move was not due to dissatisfaction with the Big West, but rather to solidify UH’s position around its FBS football program. It remains to be seen what will happen with UH’s men's volleyball, beach volleyball, women's water polo and men's swimming and diving teams, whose sports are not sponsored by the Mountain West, but the school hopes they will be allowed to remain in the Big West. Angelos: “If they elect not to allow us to stay, then we would try to get all those four in the MPSF.” Angeles also says the one-time bonus each school received will remain the same and everything else will be shared equally moving forward. Action Network’s Brett McMurphy reports the addition of Hawaii as a full member gives the Mountain West the “required eight full members to meet FBS requirements as an NCAA conference” and the league will “resume discussions with MAC schools Northern Illinois and Toledo to potentially become football-only members.” (link, link)

Michigan AD Warde Manuel joins the Conqu'ring Heroes podcast to discuss some of the finer points of the House settlement and notes the conversation about how Title IX applies to the settlement is ongoing. “Is it market-based on the revenue from television and the CFP and other things or is it strictly based on Title IX? All those things are being worked through at this present time and it's not just us, this is a national conversation about these things, and we're working to try to figure it out as quickly as we can.” There are no plans to cut sports, but Manuel acknowledges there will be a reduction of about 170 opportunities for men and women due to scholarship limits. “It’s something that I thought may have been going too far to limit, but this was negotiated amongst the commissioners in the different leagues. So, for us moving forward we're going to see some participation numbers going down, but you'll see the number of scholarships we provide going up.” As Manuel pointed out last week, fully funding all 780 scholarships would add another ~$30M to the budget, and “we don’t have that…so we’re going to invest in certain sports and hopefully grow that over time…but we’re not reducing any sport lower than where they are now by the NCAA rules and we’re not cutting any sports.” The specifics of which sports will receive scholarship increases remains ongoing. More from Manuel, including how U-M plans to engage fans to gather feedback about new revenue-generation opportunities and the possibility of adding signage to Michigan Stadium. On the latter: “Not that we have plans right now to do that, but that's the sense of questions that we want to get our fans to say: How would you like to see us develop revenue streams that would support our student-athletes? Is it ticket price increases? Is it through corporate sponsorship? Is it through looking at other premium options that others have, those kind of things?" More. (link)

When it comes to student-athletes being classified as employees, West Virginia AD Wren Baker tells Blue & Gold News’ Greg Hunter: “There are certainly arguments that can be made on all sides of that. If there is a solution that doesn’t trigger full-employment status, though, I think that’s best for everyone involved, including the student-athletes. As we know for those of us who are employees, that’s a knife that cuts both ways, right? In terms of rights and privileges, if student-athletes can get money for their name, image & likeness and still get their scholarships and benefits without triggering full employment, I think they will be better off. When anytime we have someone who is neutral and independent explain to student-athletes the difference between what they have now and employment, they almost always say, ‘Yeah, we don’t want to be employees.’ And that doesn’t even take into account international students who come here on a student visa and can’t be employees. That would be another whole issue we would have to work through.” Baker also believes that the House settlement “is going to have to be some level of collective bargaining. Currently, there isn’t a method to collectively bargain with a group who aren’t employees. … There was a hope at one time that Congress would grant (college athletics) some kind of antitrust exemption, but that hope has pretty well faded. If [an antitrust exemption] can't be reached, I don’t think employment is off the table, though I know college presidents would not be real excited about going down the road of employee status for student-athletes.” More from Baker. Former Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick joins the Now It’s Legal Podcast with Athletes.org Co-Founder Jim Cavale, who says: “You spend all this time up there with Republicans and Democrats. This seems to be the most important issue: employment and student-athlete voice. And obviously on the Democratic side, employment is more of a desire and student-athlete voice is a requisite whereas, on the Republican side, student-athlete voice is taboo and employment’s a no-no. How do we get them to agree to something that could actually protect the future of college athletics?” Swarbrick responds: “We tend to get distracted in the discussions on (Capitol) Hill about attempts to fix NIL or address the transfer problem. ‘Don't go there’ is my argument. Congress doesn't have to come up with rules for NIL in American college sports. Let the student-athletes and the universities figure out what that should look like, and we’ll be fine, and we’ll reach an agreement that’ll do the things we want to do. You said of our student-athletes in our olympic sports [they’re] fine with football players getting the lion's share of the financial rewards if their sports and scholarships were protected. The converse is true. When I say to a football player, ‘Hey, if I told you you could get this much money but we’d have to cut four sports, what do you say?’ They'd say don’t cut the four sports. … So, students have the right perspective, they have the ability to get to resolution here. We just need a way to allow them to do it.” (link)

The AAC is exploring a change of venue for its men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, which have been held in Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, since the 2020-21 season. Commissioner Tim Pernetti: “We appreciate the great partnership and want to make this year’s tournament the best it can be. We are going to explore what is out there beyond that.” The league is open to separating the tournaments and will offer cities the opportunity to bid on one or both, with Pernetti adding: “We are casting the net wide and are going to look at everything from what is happening in the area to what is happening outside DFW. … We are not making a 10-year decision. It will be something new and exciting for the conference.” Pernetti goes on to explain that “part of the decision was the geography of the conference has changed. Finding a basketball-centric market would be great. At times like this when there is so much change in the industry, we feel like it’s time to evaluate what we are doing. … We want to talk to markets that are interested in having our tournament, will invest in it, embrace it and work hard to create a championship-style event. We will see what comes back and where we land.” (link)

Georgia Tech is moving its 2025 football game against Georgia across town to Mercedes-Benz Stadium and will receive a $10M guarantee for doing so. Yellow Jackets AD J Batt calls the $10M “a transformative lift for Tech athletics,” adding: “This was not a decision that was made lightly. As I noted earlier, embarking on the new era of college athletics requires exploring new revenue sources, as that is paramount to our goal of competing for championships at the highest level.” Batt says the game, which has not been played off-campus since 1913, will return to Bobby Dodd Stadium in 2027. Bulldogs AD Josh Brooks: “We always enjoy playing in a first-class venue like Mercedes-Benz Stadium. This move will only enhance the longstanding tradition of the Georgia-Georgia Tech game and will provide another outstanding event for our fans.” (link)

NCAA National Coordinator of Officiating/Secretary-Rules Editor Steve Shaw tells Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger that the Football Playing Rules Committee is actively “engaged” in examining Oregon’s exploitation of an illegal participation penalty against Ohio State for possible action. Shaw tells Dellenger the Big Ten officiating crew handled the play appropriately, but the rules committee is discussing a way to address the play. Dellenger explains that “in the past, the rules committee has responded to such ‘fair play’ incidents with interpretation bulletins released during a season. The bulletins are often meant to be a directive for officials in games in the future. … Midseason rules interpretations are not common but they have happened in the past for similar plays that violate a rules committee component — that a penalty should not benefit the team penalized. The goal of any interpretation is to discourage coaches from further exploiting the rules, which can only be changed during a longer off-season process. To discourage the action in the Oregon-Ohio State game, any interpretation would likely direct officials to return the game clock to its original time. Shaw declined to comment on any specifics.” (link)

Eastern Washington is bringing back Men’s Golf with the relaunch set for the 2025-26 academic year. UCLA announces that “effective immediately, Champion of Westwood will serve as the official NIL collective supporting all UCLA student-athletes. Under the Champion of Westwood umbrella, there will be three distinct NIL funds: the existing Men of Westwood fund, which will exclusively support men's basketball; the existing Champion of Westwood fund (‘Champions Fund’) to support women's basketball and Olympic sports; and Bruins for Life, a new arm established to focus solely on football. This streamlined structure and focus on enhanced NIL opportunities will significantly benefit UCLA student-athletes, and support for Champion of Westwood will be recognized by the Wooden Athletic Fund and the University.” (link)

BreakingT on Monday posted photos and a link to purchase a shirt with Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia’s NIL and his quote “Vandy We Turnt” following the Commodores’ win over Alabama. In a post that has since been deleted, Pavia wrote: “This is not me.. WE HAVENT WORKED OUT A DEAL! DO NOT ORDER.” BreakingT responded: “Well, this is awkward. These shirts were approved and are licensed by Vanderbilt and yourself (via One Team Partners), and you’re receiving a royalty on all sales. Please DM us if you’d like anything further. Thanks.” Pavia, according to Front Office Sports’ Margaret Fleming, did sign a group licensing deal with OneTeam. Fleming adds: “Representatives for Pavia and BreakingT did not immediately respond to requests for comment. A representative for OneTeam did not comment. … The incident is just the latest example of the nascent NIL era’s blind spots created by unregulated or inconsistent guidelines that can confuse or harm athletes, companies, and teams.” (link)
