Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard with a strong opinion on the direction of the industry to CBS’ Dennis Dodd: “I think college football needs an Iowa State right now because we're exhibit A about opportunity and the chance to play your way in. If we're just going to let two conferences play a regular season and we'll guarantee their best teams the top spot, then the regular season is going to be pretty boring. My take would be what collateral damage is it going to take until somebody says, 'Why are we letting these few people do this to our industry?’ Until that gets fixed, we're going to see that those with the gold try to take all the gold.” (link)

Sam Houston State AD Bobby Williams says the Mountain West reached out to see if the Bearkats were interested in membership: “With UTEP, playing with some of the schools they used to play with. Not having to travel to Liberty and Delaware That’s a factor I’m sure. And just being out West and being on the far end over there. It’s probably a good move for them. We were asked if we were interested. Dr. White and I are on the same page. That’s not what we want to do. We want to help build Conference USA because we really enjoy and are excited about what’s going on. The TV package was better than we thought. The value we’re bringing, all of us, as member institutions. But, you never know. We could be picked off again in the next few days. You just don’t know. The Sun Belt has an opening, who knows. That’s the toughest part, there’s not a lot of loyalty. You have to look out for what’s best for your university and your athletic department, but I also believe in loyalty. You want to be loyal, but if the right opportunity comes for us, you never know, you have to be protected. But, the last part of my career, I want to be in Conference USA and build something special and have Sam Houston play a big part in that.” (link)

Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez weighs in on the spate of teams that have canceled volleyball games with San José State: “It breaks my heart because they’re human beings, young people, student-athletes on both sides of this issue that are getting a lot of national negative attention. It just doesn’t feel right to me. … The external influences are so far on either side. We have an election year. It’s political, so, yeah, it feels like a no-win based on all the external pressure.” The issue has, in fact, been politicized to the point that former President Donald Trump this week referenced an unidentified volleyball match during a Fox News town hall: “I saw the slam, it was a slam. I never saw a ball hit so hard, hit the girl in the head. You just ban it. The president bans it. You just don’t let it happen.” After Trump’s comment, San Diego State issued a statement explaining that “it has been incorrectly reported that a San Diego State University student-athlete was hit in the face with a volleyball during match play with San José State University. The ball bounced off the shoulder of the student-athlete, and the athlete was uninjured and did not miss a play.” As for its impact on the team itself, Spartans HC Todd Kress says: “I know that it’s definitely taken a toll on many of them. They’re receiving messages of hate, which is completely ridiculous to me. Some of those people are the underbelly of society that you attack an 18, 19, 20-year-old female. And even more so if you’re a parent and you’re attacking 18, 19 or 20-year-olds. Would you want your student-athlete, your daughter, to face the same kind of hate that you’re dishing out?” (link)

USA Today’s Dan Wolken writes on the exit of Virginia Men’s Basketball HC Tony Bennett: “What’s changed are the relationships. Coaches at the lower levels know any good player they recruit will likely leave at the first opportunity. And at the higher levels, the threat of any player picking up and leaving hangs over nearly every interaction like a guillotine. Nobody is arguing that the problem is players making money. The issue is that the current system of free-market mayhem has turned college coaching into a profession where authenticity in any interaction with a player is no longer possible. [...] It’s stunning – and frankly insulting – that college presidents still refuse to consider that path while hoping NCAA president and former Massachusetts governor Charlie Baker can get his buddies on Capitol Hill to pass friendly legislation. A couple of years ago, you’d have had pretty much every coach and athletics director lining up behind that effort. Now, cracks are starting to form. Quite recently, in fact, I heard from a highly respected athletics director at a prominent school who blasted Baker for doing nothing substantially different tactically or rhetorically from his predecessor, Mark Emmert, despite coming into the job with the reputation as a bipartisan and pragmatic reformer who successfully governed a liberal state as a conservative. [...] If the NCAA doesn’t acknowledge reality – and soon – a lot more are going to follow Bennett out the door.” (link)

Arkansas Men’s Basketball HC John Calipari and his wife have made more than $90K in political contributions this cycle, according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit, who reports: “Calipari’s biggest beneficiary was the Democratic Grassroots Victory Fund, which received $50K, while Pennsylvania’s Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro got $20K of Calipari cash. The former Kentucky coach also spread some of his wealth to Republicans—at least those living in the commonwealth. In 2023, he gave the Kentucky state GOP $3,400, while lavishing Rep. Andy Barr with $10K for his U.S. Senate bid. Calipari’s wife, Ellen, also gave $3,300 to Barr’s Senate campaign and another $3,400 to the state party.” Coach Cal’s political largesse is uncommon among prominent college sports leaders this cycle despite the “increasingly political dynamics of the intercollegiate athletics industry” and the money the NCAA has spent on lobbying. Libit reports U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) has received contributions from several notable figures in college sports, including NCAA President Charlie Baker ($2,500); Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark ($2,500); former LEAD1 President Tom McMillen ($2,500); former NCAA EVP for Regulatory Affairs Oliver Luck ($2,500); MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher ($500); and Maryland AD Damon Evans ($250) among others. McMillen: “There are industries that are very political, that know their members of Congress, support them, worship both sides of the aisle, where that is all part of the game. In college sports it is really kind of hit or miss. A lot of universities that are reluctant to get in the middle [of politics], and a lot of coaches and administrators are also not geared in that way.” (link)

Georgia Assoc. AD for Facilities & Capital Projects Tanner Stines joins Connect's Kristen Eargle on the latest episode of The Career Hustle. Stines talks about his journey with UGA, which began as a student equipment manager, how to build strong relationships with mentors, adapting to various leadership styles and more. Stines says of the latter: “If you have a leader who's very micromanaging and wants to know all the details and you're putting in all the work that's needed for that, you'll succeed there. If you have one that is very laissez-faire and just trusts you completely to do it, you still have to put in the same amount of work to achieve those same goals. I think you staying on your pathway and achieving it how you think it should be done, that usually resonates with both leadership styles. Lots of people want a ton of communication and some want none. I would always tell people I want to know anything and everything and when it's too much, I will tell you it's too much information. … Communication is probably the biggest thing that goes with any leadership style that you may have to work under.” Check out the rest of the conversation on Connect. Facing its first deficit in 20 years, Kent State announces new cost-saving initiatives. The FY24 budget for the university was $687.5M, but the school went over budget by roughly $10M. President Todd Diacon has enacted hiring and traveling freezes in effect until further notice and adds: “At Kent State, we are also aiming for a soft landing, one that a) delivers balanced budgets annually and b) reduces the number of our employees primarily through attrition. … Over the next 36 months, we will see a reduction in the number of employees at Kent State. Most vacated positions will not be filled, and for those vacated positions that are filled, we aspire to do so with current employees as much as possible.“ Other initiatives include “rethinking how we use space.” The FY25 budget is around $706.6M. No word yet on the impact to athletics, but Diacon will dig in further on the cost-saving measures on October 24. (link)

The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel writes on TV ratings to date for Power 4 football contests. Notably: “Of the 12 games that have averaged at least 6 million viewers this season, nine have been ABC broadcasts featuring at least one SEC team.” ESPN Senior VP for College Sports Programming and Acquisitions Nick Dawson: “We told the SEC when we had discussions with them — we want to compete in all three windows aggressively on Saturdays. In most weeks, the two best SEC games are going to be one at 3:30 on ABC and one is going to be in prime time on either ABC or ESPN. But we wanted to be aggressive in the Noon window as well.” More from Mandel: “As a result, ESPN’s other primary conference, the ACC, has seen its ABC broadcasts dwindle from 14 through the first seven weeks last season to four this year. And only one Big 12 team has appeared on ABC — Oklahoma State when it hosted SEC foe Arkansas in Week 2. (Fox has aired 11 Big 12 games in its mid-afternoon and prime-time windows.)” Lots more. ESPN in FY24 “experienced a nearly 20-year high (prime time) and a near-decade high (total day) for its main linear productions (on ESPN and ESPN on ABC), earning consumption levels not experienced since ESPN’s fiscal years 2006 and 2016, respectively, based on public third-party data through the end of September. During the past 12 months, sports fans consumed 533B minutes of ESPN and ESPN on ABC programming with 202B minutes coming in prime time. Across ESPN and ESPN on ABC, the total minutes was up 7% and 8%, respectively, in prime time from ESPN’s FY23 across the same programming.” The company also announces it garnered 8.5B social media engagements, which it says is 50% higher than its nearest competition. Additionally, ESPN Digital averaged nearly 112M unique visitors each month, setting a new platform record. The average was up 3.2M visitors (3%) from the previous record set in FY23. More data. Pittsburgh names Tennessee Senior Deputy AD/COO/former Auburn/Buffalo AD Allen Greene as its next AD, effective November 1. Chancellor Joan Gabel: "Pitt Athletics is the front porch of the University of Pittsburgh, serving as a crucial access point for so many across our campus, our region, our nation and the world. In Allen Greene, we have a proven national leader who exemplifies the Pitt way, and who has all of the experience and intangibles to elevate our athletics program in competition and in the classroom. In my conversations with Allen and with many others who know him well, it is clear that he will lead us successfully into the new world of intercollegiate athletics." Greene: “It was apparent from my very first conversation with Chancellor Gabel that Pitt has the highest of aspirations in every endeavor it undertakes. That's tremendously energizing to me and a challenge I fully embrace. I am inspired by the storied history of Pitt Athletics and am fully dedicated to helping our Panthers reach even greater heights in the future.” (link)

Former student-athletes included as class members in the House settlement can now begin filing their claims for back damages using a website set up by the NCAA. On3’s Pete Nakos notes the “first back-damage payment is due May 15, 2025, or within 45 days of the settlement’s finalization. According to the long-form settlement agreement, the average damages award for a football or men’s basketball player at a Power Five conference school will be approximately $135K.” Nakos also notes the $1.976B earmarked for NIL damages is being allocated into three categories: broadcast NIL, video game NIL and lost NIL opportunities. San Francisco professor Daniel Rascher estimates the damages for each category will be $1.815B for broadcast NIL, $71.5M for video game NIL and $89.5M for lost NIL opportunities. Also, according to previously submitted documents, 95% of the additional compensation net settlement fund will be allocated to the Power Five football and men’s basketball portion with a distributed ratio of 75/15/5. As Georgia and Texas prepare to kick off one of the most anticipated games of the football season tomorrow, UT President Jay Hartzell explains that events like this were a big reason the Longhorns wanted to join the SEC. “That part is probably the least covered by the media given the impact. The media focuses so much on media rights deals. They don’t focus enough on the impact of home games. [...] One marquee opponent at home was fundamentally different to the economics of a season. The power of the home schedule has been the least well understood.” Another impetus, according to Longhorns AD Chris Del Conte, was the 2018 federal tax change that prevented boosters from exempting football-related ticket donations, and Del Conte notes: “You can no longer write off your tickets. Who you play matters now.” Hartzell goes on to posit that “the way the economic forces in college sports are going is going to exacerbate the gaps between the haves and have-nots. Cutting the cord at the household level is causing pressure on media deals. Generally, live sports are one of those things that generate a ton of interest and demand. College football is the biggest driver but not all of those games are equal. The games with the big brands drive the revenue. … I don’t have an end point in mind, but this trend of trying to find ways to get the marquee brands to play each other more frequently, I don’t think it’s over. [...] I worry about schools below a certain threshold and I do worry about how they are going to keep up and keep competing. At the end of the day, you’re going to have a lot of them that are going to find themselves having to subsidize athletics even more. It’s going to cause another cost pressure on the academic side of the house, where people are going to feel like they’re going to have to find ways to save money on academics to make sure they keep the athletic program where it is. It’s going to cause a set of questions at some of those schools: Is it really worth it?” (link)

The Clemson Board of Trustees Finance and Facilities Committee greenlit Phase II of a plan for comprehensive improvements to Swann Pavilion and Littlejohn Coliseum, with construction scheduled to begin in December. The project includes renovations of more than 51K square feet of existing team spaces and 30K square feet of new construction at a cost of $40M. Anticipated facility improvements include further development of operations and technology in the women’s basketball team spaces, practice gym, offices and recruiting areas. Additionally, upgrades include modernization and expansion to shared strength & conditioning, nutrition, and sports medicine spaces, and some of the newly constructed spaces include men’s basketball team areas, offices, and practice gym. Once the project is completed, each program will have its own designated practice gym, updated offices and team areas, as well as improved performance spaces. Tigers AD Graham Neff: “Strong basketball programs are key to an elite intercollegiate athletic department, which greatly impacts the student experience. We are thankful to the Brown Family for their generous support, which will allow us to continue the progress of bringing our basketball facilities among the top in the country.” (link); Meanwhile, no action was taken by the Finances and Facilities Committee on admission fees for non-Clemson Athletic events and a student athletics fee. The full board is set to discuss and vote on those items today. According to The Clemson Insider’s Will Vandervort, the athletic department is seeking clarification for requirements when it comes to adding bond fees for non-athletic events that are using athletic facilities, such as a visit from the Savannah Bananas. Clemson is asking the board to approve roughly a $150 athletic fee per semester to be charged to students. Currently, Clemson is the only public college in the state that does not require its students to pay athletic fees. (link)

Virginia Men’s Basketball AHC Ron Sanchez will lead the program as Interim HC with a national search after the season following former HC Tony Bennett’s retirement. Meanwhile, Hoos AD Carla Williams says of Bennett’s departure: “When people like Tony Bennett exit men’s basketball, exit our industry, for something that has nothing to do with coaching or teaching or being a role model, then shame on all of us.” (link, link)

JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher talks with Gonzaga Men’s Basketball HC Mark Few, who says of Virginia HC Tony Bennett’s retirement: “You’ll see more of this. It’s (NIL and the transfer portal) definitely demanding, and it’s definitely different than what we signed up for. I’m not saying it’s good or bad — it’s different. You adapt as much as you can, and when you don’t feel like you can adapt, you do what Tony did.” Few goes on to tell Canzano he was involved in multiple realignment conversations over the past few years, including one with former Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff before the league splintered. Nothing materialized, but when current Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould visited Spokane, she “sold Few and the brain trust at Gonzaga on how their school would alter the trajectory of her conference.” Few: “It’s not always just adding a certain (big) market or adding football in some instances. Maybe it’s changing the momentum and changing the narrative, which then flips some other people.” Few also weighs in on expanding the NCAA Tournament: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The tournament is definitely not broke. We need some definite change at the NCAA level… there were so many opportunities for them to give a little bit. I think that would have stamped the flow. It didn’t. There’s definitely a lesson in that. Now we just need some framework to work with.” Meanwhile, as the WCC looks to move forward post-Gonzaga, Commissioner Stu Jackson tells Canzano the league is focused on collaboration, affiliation, and potential scheduling alliances with other basketball leagues. The aim is to boost brands, build media value, and rake in maximum NCAA Tournament units. “We have to look at something bigger than just adding one or two members.” More from Canzano. (link)

In addition to revenue-sharing, Washington Football HC Jedd Fisch wants to continue investing in other areas of the program. His wish list includes a refurbished locker room and improvements to the nutrition, hydrotherapy and training programs. Fisch also wants to give every player a zero-gravity chair and Normatec recovery boots, calling those details “critical” to the program’s success. “The guys that are coming to visit us recruiting are then going on their next trip to Michigan, and their next trip to Ohio State, and their next trip to Oregon. And we’ve got to look the same, feel the same and those kids have got to feel like they’re getting that same commitment.” Huskies AD Pat Chun says the department has already invested around $20M in the football team this season in upgrades to the weight room and the Don James Center inside Husky Stadium, among others. Chun: “Our business model may be changing here depending on the resolution of this House settlement,” Chun said. “So there’s going to be a need for additional dollars to help subsidize the athletics department. We’re going to ask those who support us the most and those who see the value of college athletics relative to higher education, relative to the state and this community, for some additional support.” (link)

As reports and rumors swirl about Campbell cutting the number of wrestling scholarships it offers (perhaps from nine to three), Extra Points publisher Matt Brown notes nothing is official yet. In a statement to the local ABC affiliate, the Camels explained: "Like many smaller colleges and universities across the nation, we have been evaluating our operational expenses and have made some strategic decisions to ensure the future of this great institution. To that end, we've asked for the cooperation of various departments and units, including Campbell Athletics, who are helping us in this goal of ensuring institutional strength and resilience. Some of these measures have impacted athletics scholarships across multiple sports for the 25-26 academic year. These decisions have caused some anxiety for many. Rest assured, our university and athletics leadership is working to position all of our teams for success.” Brown guesstimates Campbell’s budget around $15-30M and understands why schools in that range would be budget-conscious; however, he adds: “I don’t think I have enough information right now to make any sort of value judgment about these cuts. … From talking to a few industry folks this morning, I'm hearing Campbell athletic cuts are part of a holistic university plan that involves cuts in *many* places, athletics and elsewhere...not just wrestling. Enrollment is down, belts must be tightened, etc.” Brown also notes: “I do expect more big-budget, P4 programs to announce cuts to various scholarship offerings in Olympic sports, particularly in sports like track, men’s volleyball, men’s gymnastics, swimming, and yes, wrestling. I think they’ll do this not because they can’t afford them, necessarily, but because they want to clear salary cap room.” (link, link)

Miners AD Jim Senter: “I think it’s interesting we have this opportunity just a few weeks after joining the Mountain West. It's a really big deal to make this historic climb up. We will be unveiling and launching initiatives over the next 18 months to continue to climb up. Every single game, every single contest we have, every conversation – it's strategic and it's valuable. When people step up like GECU has and they help us, it makes this community better.” (link)

Tennessee is proposing a $9.3M increase to the renovation budget for Lindsey Nelson Stadium due to unforeseen soil and utility conditions discovered during construction. If approved, the proposal would increase the stadium renovation budget to $105.1M, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel’s Mike Wilson and Keenan Thomas, who note the funding would come via gifts and not impact the Tennessee State School Bond Authority bonds UT is already using. The Vols plan to have the project completed in time for the 2026 season. (link)
