Ashland WBB capped off its undefeated season with a national championship win over Minnesota Duluth, giving the Eagles their third undefeated season and title. HC Pickens: “I genuinely believe this team was hand-picked. We could not have done it without the selflessness of each and every person. […] This team has been so incredibly special to me for their selflessness and how much they came together.” WIth Pickens at the helm, the Eagles now become the first DII WBB program to win three championships with three different HCs. Presidential Deliberations:

+ NCAA President Baker sounds off on a number of topics, including working with Congress to come up with an NIL solution, Baker says: “We’ve been talking to Republicans and Democrats. I think, based on those conversations, the feds are pretty serious about doing something, and I’m encouraged by that. If you want to have a national standard for how NIL works, it’s going to be very hard to do that without federal legislation.” On the transfer portal: “The transfer rule, one time free and the next time make a case for it, is the best way to handle this.” (link)

+ “Remember, I came out of a public-sector environment where there’s a lot of distributed decision-making models. I generally believe that if you respect the model, you can easily find a way to get to someplace that works for people. But I’ve also said that (football) is in some respects the biggest challenge that will face anybody in this job and I certainly believe it’s one of mine.” That’s new NCAA President Baker to the media yesterday as the Raleigh News & Observer’s DeCock frames up how, “So many of the existential and epistemological issues” Baker faces start on the gridiron. DeCock in closing: “This is tremendous spectacle, in Houston or Dallas, and tremendous basketball, and it’s what the NCAA actually does well. Figuring out the rest of it isn’t so easy.” (link)

+ Front Office Sports’ Christovich: “Caught up briefly w NCAA President @CharlieBakerMA. He clarified his views on NIL: ‘There’s no uniform standard contract in this area, there should be,’ he says, like there is for mortgages.’ But does he want contracts to include a cap on athlete earnings? ‘I never said that.'" Delta State has launched a five-year, $10M fundraising campaign for athletics, with over $1M raised to date. Key components of the campaign include scholarships, an indoor practice facility, academic support and more. AD Kinnison: “Statesmen and Lady Statesmen Athletics are an effective part of DSU’s academic mission. Our programs can unify alumni involvement and support, afford national recognition, promote recruitment, and offer a shared sense of pride among the Delta State family. The University’s athletic program must build for national prominence. […] Our Athletic Department is at a point of needed growth. We need to add sports to be more competitive in our conference, to enhance enrollment, and to create balance within our offerings for women. Optimal sports to add would be women’s volleyball and golf. These would require reoccurring funds to sustain the programs and provide the best chance for success.” (link)

Higher Education’s hiring challenges show no signs of easing, according to a survey conducted by The Chronicle of Higher Education and the Huron Consulting Group, which found that 62% of respondents indicated that hiring for staff and administrative jobs during January, February, and March had been more difficult than it was in 2022. Meanwhile, 32% said it had been about the same and just a quarter of respondents thought that hiring would be easier in 2023 than in 2022. To try and combat the trend, colleges and universities are raising salaries. Median pay for employees increased as much as 5.3% for staff members. Administrators and professionals saw 4.5% and 4.4% median raises, respectively, while tenure-track and non-tenure-track faculty members got median bumps of 2.9% and 3.2%. The problem is that these increases are failing to keep up with inflation, which sits at 7.1%. (link)

Cal Poly Humboldt has retained an outside firm to look into allegations against MBB HC Norwood and the program, “In addition to the inquiries being conducted by a number of campus units, including Intercollegiate Athletics,” per the TImes-Standard’s Matson who reports further on accusations of misconduct by Norwood, with an anonymous student-athlete stating: “Coach (Tae) Norwood should not be qualified to be in a leading position at a state-regulated university.” Matson also recounts multiple student-athletes’ reports of intimidation ahead of the end of season surveys, lack of meals both on-campus and on the road due to a lengthy practice schedule or long travel schedule, a lack of acknowledgement of Senior Night which a statement reasoned as “unforeseen logistical problems,” and more. Simon Fraser is investigating concerns raised by WSOC student-athletes with the program and HC Hamel. During this time, the Red Leafs program will be “under the direction of other members of the athletics staff.” AD Hanson, in part: “As an institution committed to delivering an exceptional student-athlete experience, we find the allegations very troubling. Student-athlete safety and wellbeing is our priority. SFU Athletics is conducting a thorough investigation, which includes working with our student-athletes to understand the situation and ensure they are receiving the support and services they need.” (link)

+ Holy Family will add Baseball as its 18th varsity program, starting next academic year. AD Hamill: “This is an exciting time at Holy Family with the sustained growth of our athletic department. This growth allows the university to continue its tradition of developing student-athletes that will learn discipline, preparation, strategic thinking, and teamwork in their respective sports with their peers at an even larger scale.” (link)

+ With Florida Tech set to reinstate Men's Rowing, the Friends of FIT Rowing Association has its sights set on bringing back the women's team. Per The Florida Tech Crimson's Aoyagi: "Their hopes of filing a lawsuit will not be under Title IX, as their argument for not having enough women’s teams at Florida Tech does not apply to them, like it did for the men’s team. The FFRA plan to help fund the women’s team going further and hope to be at the NCAA competition in May, 2024." (link)
