The latest from San Diego State AD Wicker on a potential move to the Pac-12: “The big thing is you don’t believe anything that’s written because it might have some truth to it, but it doesn’t have complete truth to it. We have conversations with a lot of different people, athletic directors, conference-level people across the country to understand what’s going on, what’s in their world. I think the big thing right now is the Pac-12 has to figure out their media deal, and then there’s next steps beyond that.” Wicker also reflects on his early tenure: “I got named AD, and within the first 100 days, the president who hired me announced he was leaving, the Chargers left and Steve Fisher retired. In my first 100 days. I’m like, ‘Damn, this is what this is about.’ You get in this chair, with all these different things happening and I was like, ‘Either Jim Sterk did things I didn’t know he was doing or this job is a lot harder than it was for Jim.’ And it’s not. It’s just things you don’t know.” Lots more. (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake games out how the dominoes might fall if San Diego State joins the Pac-12, noting his mind “immediately went to a handful of California-based Big Sky Conference members such as UC Davis, Cal Poly and Sacramento State” as potential replacements for the Mountain West to consider. But I’m told by an industry insider that those options won’t easily fly” due to pushback from “San Jose State, Nevada and Fresno State, who all regularly recruit California.” Canzano also caught up with Big Sky Commissioner Wistrcill, who said: “We’re always monitoring the changing landscape of college athletics. Our President’s Council discusses various schools and potential movements at every meeting. You have to be ready for anything.” It’s also possible the MWC could remain at 10 full-time members, “but the ultimate play for the MWC may be in Texas (i.e. Sam Houston, UTEP, UTSA, etc.).” Canzano also reports that “Boise State could also be an eventual Big 12 target, although I’m told there hasn’t been frequent and regular contact. There were also some recent murmurs about possible Big 12 interest in UNLV, but based on my conversations I don’t think it’s particularly serious.” (link)

Big 12 Commissioner Yormark joins TurnkeyZRG CEO Perna to discuss his vision for the league and several other topics, including why people from other industries might follow his lead and make the jump to work in college sports. “It changes every day, and some people could look at that as a challenge. I look at it as an opportunity. You’ve got to come into this space thinking that life is half-full, not half-empty and take advantage of some of these changes, which, candidly, I have done with some of my colleagues here in the Big 12.” Yormark also notes college sports is a space where one can make an immediate impact and adds the industry is “not as mature as places I’ve been before, so it gives you some latitude to be creative, innovative, disruptive and to truly make a difference. And I think as those professionals that are contemplating a move into college athletics, as they think about it and maybe even gravitate to it, you want to make sure that your partner – whether it’s a president of a school or your board that you work for – has the same mission and vision that you have.” (link)

Central Michigan AD Folan joins AthleticDirectorU’s Brown to discuss her conscientious leadership style, empowering staff to take on leadership responsibility, what’s on her mind outside college athletics and more. Folan says building a diverse team is the key to creative problem-solving. “Some of that is you want seasoned professionals. You want people that have been there, know what they’re doing. And then you also want some fresh faces that look at it and go, ‘Yeah, just because you’ve always done it that way, have you seen this new technology?’ or, ‘We could do this so much faster.’ … Build a great team with diverse perspectives of great people that are inspired by helping student-athletes every day, and that fosters the creativity you need over and over.” Full interview. USA Today’s Wolken reports Texas A&M golf student-athlete Bennett, when asked about potentially missing out on a seven-figure prize after his impressive finish at the Masters: “I don’t know, NIL has been pretty good this year.” (link); Bennett’s mother, Stacy, admits her son has faced some mental health struggles since losing his father in 2021, but describes Aggies HC Kortan as a father figure for Bennett. “Coach helps him to level out and be calm, teaching him how to calm that anxiety. He’s been really just a rock, he really has, especially this week” by serving as Bennett’s caddy. Asked if he plans to compete at this week’s Aggie Invitational, Bennett indicated he probably would; however, asked if he would take a push cart, he quickly said no. “This ain’t Stanford.” (link)

Clemson is considering a project that would add amphitheater-style seating to The Hill at Memorial Stadium ahead of the 2023 FB home opener as part of a plan to improve student safety. In addition to introducing tiered seating to reduce crowding at the bottom of the hill, the plan would improve entrances and stairwells leading into the area and slightly decrease the slope of the hill. Quinnipiac captured its first NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Title in school history last night, dramatically netting the winning goal 10 seconds into overtime after tying the contest late in the third period. Bobcats HC Pecknold: “It's awesome. I don't know if I can even talk up here. Just awesome. We're excited. So proud of these guys. Great group. Awesome to see all my alums in the stands. I can't even put it into words. I'm struggling. Usually I don't have trouble talking, but I'm struggling right now.” (link, link)

If the 2023 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament units are at least as high as they were last year, Miami (FL) can expect somewhere in the neighborhood of $667K for its run to the Final Four. The U’s WBB program, however, will get $0 from the NCAA’s Basketball Performance Fund, despite advancing to the Elite Eight. Knight Commission CEO Perko observes: “It is inconsistent with the NCAA’s constitutional principle of operating in a gender-equitable way. The NCAA just needs to put its constitutional principles into practice.” It has been more than 500 days since the Kaplan Report recommended the NCAA deliver distribution units based on WBB postseason performance as well, a point of contention for Perko, “It didn’t take them long to make a lot of changes to bring the tournament experience up to par. So it is discouraging that it has taken them this long.” More analysis from The Boardroom. (link)

The latest from JohnCanzano.com’s namesake on the Pac-12’s media rights negotiations:
“I think the Pac-12 has been clumsy and inconsistent on the PR front. Fans are frustrated and battling negotiation fatigue. Media are over it, too. The only thing that matters now is the actual deal. As I wrote in an update this week, I don’t expect news in April. My eyes are on May and June. High-level sources continue to tell me the Pac-12 believes it will be in range (or exceed) the $31.6 million per year distribution that the Big 12 negotiated for its members. Let’s see where this lands.” (link)

SMU Deputy AD for Internal Affairs Rogers and Vanderbilt Deputy AD for Internal Affairs/SWA Kelly join AthleticDirectorU’s Brown for ‘Leadership Lessons from the Deputy AD Chair.’ Both previously sat in AD roles earlier in their careers and agree that allows them to synthesize the information they share with their athletic directors now. Kelly on how she provides feedback to her staff: “It goes back to relationships. Do you have that strong foundational relationship with the people that you’re working with, because when it’s time for that hard feedback then it won’t be such a surprise. And then it’s consistent feedback - good, bad, indifferent.” Kelly adds that sharing feedback throughout the year, rather than all at once during the annual performance review, is key in leadership. Lots more. (link)

RealResponse Founder Chadwick in a guest column for SBJ emphasizes the need for leaders in the sports industry to “actively foster a positive environment that encourages communication in a productive and protected fashion without recourse.” To that end, Chadwick submits that “leaders must consider the power dynamics at play within their organizations, as well as potential generational differences in communication styles. … If the belief is that a 19-year-old or twenty something raised on instant messaging and social media will confidently walk into a coach’s or the head of HR’s office for a face-to-face conversation, expect to be disappointed.” Leaders, Chadwick continues, “can’t merely create feedback channels and call it a day. They must create the right channels, help cultivate relationships that welcome feedback, and provide assurances of confidentiality with no threat of reprisal.” More. (link)
