We offer our deepest sympathies to the USF community following the passing of Men’s Basketball HC Amir Abdur-Rahim. According to the school, Abdur-Rahim was undergoing a medical procedure at a Tampa-area hospital when he died due to complications that arose. Bulls AD Michael Kelly: "All of us with South Florida Athletics are grieving with the loved ones of Coach Abdur-Rahim. He was authentic, driven, and his infectious personality captivated all of Bulls Nation. Coach Abdur-Rahim leaves a lasting impact on our student-athletes, the University, and the community. We are supporting those closest to him, including his family, team, and athletics staff, to ensure they have the resources they need to deal with this tremendous loss." (link)

Former Penn State AD Sandy Barbour joins the Now It’s Legal Podcast with Athletes.org Co-Founder Jim Cavale to discuss her involvement with the Football Oversight Committee and DI Council, making decisions based on improving student-athletes’ wellbeing, promoting student-athletes' personal growth and more. Barbour, who also serves as an AO board member, acknowledges the industry is in the position it is largely because of inaction in the recent past. “I’ll raise my hand, I was part of the feet-dragging for however many years that you want to put that label on it. And it was out of fear [of] what's something radically different look like? But we've come to a point where we've got to have a solution; otherwise, something that we've all worked so hard to help build and help be really impactful for student-athletes was really going to suffer. And I'm sure we'll talk about the House settlement. I'm in favor of the House settlement not because I think it's perfect, but because I think it's a step. It gets us off the dime. It gets us headed towards what can be solutions that benefit first and foremost student-athletes, but institutions and the enterprise of college sports that is meant so much to so many with student-athletes at the top of that list.” Barbour also explains that “one of the challenges that athletic directors have today – and it's because of the litigation [and] this is going to sound really strange if you haven't already heard – they're being told they can't talk to their student-athletes because their student-athletes are plaintiffs and the athletic directors and the athletic departments and the institutions are the defendants.” Moving forward with the House settlement, Barbour wants to make sure student-athletes are fully aware of what it means to opt in or out. “Certainly not going to tell anyone here’s what I think you ought to do, but I want to make sure when they pull the proverbial lever to say I’m opting in or opting out that they know what that means. And I think right now this ‘plaintiffs and defendants can’t talk to each other’ – and I know that’s not a 100% bright line – but that's the kind of advice some athletic directors are getting at many institutions.” Lots more. Ohio State AD Ross Bjork sits down with The Lantern student newspaper and says it’s fair to point out that Football HC Ryan Day is 2-6 overall in top-five matchups but adds: “My job is to figure out with Coach Day, are there any barriers? What are you analyzing as we go through this? What are you looking at in terms of watching the film or watching the schematics or watching the game plan? What led up to that particular game or that particular moment? My job is just to support him, help him through that, help him analyze any deficiencies that might be there, but we gotta remember, we lost to the No. 3 team on the road by one point and had the ball, had a chance to win.” Bjork goes on to say OSU is still working through the details of Project 36: “How we spend our money is what we’re really focusing on right now. What does that look like, knowing that we’re gonna have a new expense of at least $21M or $22M of revenue share that we'll be able to really distribute to the athletes? And so, we’re working on what sports receive that revenue share … We want to protect 36 sports, so we have principles. Protect 36 sports, make sure we continue to focus on academics. We have a 96% graduation and placement rate of our athletes. Let's make sure we maintain that our GPA of all of our student-athletes is over a 3.3. So, focus on academics, focus on competitive success.” More from Bjork. (link)

Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey addresses several topics in a letter to fans and notes that “in addition to selling out Albertsons Stadium for the entire season, our men's basketball season ticket total has climbed above 8,000 for the first time in program history, and soccer leads the Mountain West and is 21st in the country in average attendance.” In regards to the House settlement, Dickey explains the Broncos “are creating our strategic plan of what this looks like for Boise State as we continue to strive for championships and elevate our strong brand across 18 sport programs. We will continue to compete at the highest level of collegiate athletics and revenue-sharing is a key component of that going forward.” To that end, Dickey indicates the department is “working tirelessly to build the best-in-class revenue-sharing organization in the country, where we will welcome and provide turnkey services for all student-athletes who wear the Blue and Orange. We will drive our competitive advantage through alternative funding concepts, franchise workflow and technology, contracts, and immersive brand development strategies tailored for student-athletes who want to Bleed Blue. We expect to unveil this newly-branded organization soon and begin working on several innovative revenue sharing activities.” Full letter. (link)

Alcorn State AD E. D'Wayne Robinson addresses reports of subpar conditions for the women’s soccer team: “The administration, along with myself, we’ve put together a plan that's being addressed. The president is definitely engaged in that plan as far as building up not only just our soccer program, but our entire athletics department from a facilities standpoint. So, all things are being addressed and have been addressed, so not to worry, we’re going to be in a great place.” (link)

Texas Southern AD Kevin Granger covers several topics with the Black Sports Insiders podcast, including how HBCUs can continue to provide opportunities for student-athletes: “I think us as HBCUs have to get creative. I think we're in a new era, we're in a new age, we're in the NIL age, although most of the time HBCUs, we don't have the heavy resources as other schools. So, we’ve got to get creative. We have to be able to offer student-athletes opportunities, they may not be the same opportunity that they are provided or afforded at a PWI, but you have to be able to play and be in the ball game if you want your program to continue to thrive. It’s one of the main reasons why we set out on this quest about three years ago to take a deep dive and make sure we started upgrading our facilities. If you know in this day and time it’s the first thing recruits want to look at when they come to your campus, they want to see the bells and whistles.” Granger also says a football stadium is in the future but notes that Texas state funds can’t be used for facilities, so there is still some fundraising that needs to happen. Missouri State AD Patrick Ransdell Q&As with the Springfield Daily Citizen’s Ryan Collingwood and says of Springfield’s ability to provide financial support: “I think we have the donor support and the corporate support for the things we want to do. Everyone has said they’re all in and want to help. Over the next six months, we’re going to give them the opportunity to follow through on what they’ve said. We’re going to find out real quick whether everyone is all-in to helping us.” Ransdell says of NIL: “Right now we have three collectives. Do we need to consolidate that and make it more streamlined? You see a lot of schools out there that have their own general manager, so to speak, who manages all of that. So is that something we need to look at? Because right now we have some community members helping, but they have full-time jobs, too. At some point, though, it becomes a full-time job. With the recent House settlement, we need to take inventory of what revenue-sharing looks like. You’re allowed to go up to $22M. Obviously, that’s well outside of our purview. But as we increase our revenues, can we maybe look at some things that we can dictate?” On the elimination of the NLI: “Theoretically, it’s supposed to streamline some things but my compliance office says that may not be the case. What’s more practical (that the NCAA recently announced) is the transfer (portal) windows being shortened. I think that’s going to help our coaches and roster management and help them know things a little bit earlier.” (link)

Harvard is looking for ways to increase attendance at football games, and Crimson AD Erin McDermott says the athletic department is emphasizing the effectiveness of “peer-to-peer” advertising that relies on word-of-mouth. “That's the next step. People come and then you're all talking about it, and then it makes other people think ‘OK, maybe I'll give this a shot.’” Senior Assoc. AD for Business Development Nick Majocha notes there is also a need to make genuine connections with the student body. “We know that if Harvard Athletics or Harvard College throws a party or a tailgate, no one's going to come. It has to be promoted and organized by the students, so we're trying to support those efforts with space and some resources, and then we're trying to let the students really run the events. We’re just trying to amplify them.” With Yale set to return to Cambridge for The Game this season, Majocha acknowledges there were too many tailgating restrictions for the 2022 iteration. “They realized that it was too restrictive two years ago, and that led to low attendance, and it led to offshoot parties. The goal here is to have one tailgate that appeals to the whole undergraduate population and the Yale population that comes to visit that weekend.” Asst. AD for Business Strategy and Innovation Andrew Zingone emphasizes the need to create an environment that is “organically Harvard,” adding: “It's easy to point to a Harvard football game and compare it to Alabama football, but you don't see anyone comparing an Alabama math class and a Harvard math class.” (link)

Michigan State is asking a U.S. District Court to dismiss the wrongful termination lawsuit brought by former Football HC Mel Tucker using verbiage like “meritless” and an “$80 million conspiracy.” More: “Tucker’s claims all fail on the face of the pleadings, which include his employment contract and related records. And most of Tucker’s claims are also barred by federal and state qualified immunities.” (link)

Horizon League Commissioner Julie Roe Lach joins Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz from the 2024 Women Leaders Convention to discuss networking tips and when to follow-up after meeting a new colleague. Lach also contrasts her vision for the league upon taking the job with the reality of implementing it over the past three years and explains why she’s committed to pouring into college athletics as it continues to evolve and change. Lach explains the challenges facing the league are twofold and begin with how to address the House settlement. “Are we opting in or not? I believe we’re trending towards that because we want to continue to compete nationally in basketball, and I think that's going to be part of that formula. Still tough though because roster sizes will change so there may be some phase-in, but that is a very layered decision. It’s not black and white, as most things aren't, but I think that really because it intersects with parts of our higher ed institutions that move way beyond just the doors of the athletics department.” Lach on why she chooses to stay in college athletics: “Our student-athletes, they are getting it done. But then you see how much they value the experience and they care. They care about where their championships are, they care about what the brackets look like because it matters. So, to me, that's why it's still really exciting to be a part of it.” More on Connect. (link)

Harvard AD Erin McDermott acknowledges the Crimson could be in a disadvantageous position when recruiting low-income student-athletes due to NIL but notes the athletic department is working to create a more “tangible” pitch for choosing the school. “It’s a lifelong decision — it’s a 40-year decision versus a four-year decision. To a family that is coming from different circumstances, or the lower socioeconomic circumstances, that may be very fuzzy and hazy to them. … You won’t just be viewed by the school as an athlete, and that’s what you're there to do. You are here to be truly a student-athlete.” McDermott also hopes to ensure all payments to student-athletes are for true NIL deals rather than from collectives. “What we are not okay with — and it’s not even legal, but I know the reality is it’s happening in other places — is these truly more pay-for-play payments that are coming directly from donors that are just banding together and deciding what sums of money they might provide to athletes on a team.” She notes the figure Harvard will have to pay for the House settlement is neither “ridiculous” nor “nominal,” adding: “It’s, I think, going to be at a level that we’ll notice. But it’s not going to change the experience that we’re providing.” (link)

After spending two years painstakingly building a roster designed to make the 12-team College Football Playoff this year, Ole Miss may be on the outside looking in. Regardless of how the season plays out, Rebels AD Keith Carter tells The Athletic’s David Ubben: “This isn’t a one-shot wonder. We’re going to continually build rosters that are relevant nationally and in the top 12 and trying to get into the Playoff every year. If we don’t get in the Playoff this year, it isn’t over. We’re just getting started.” The Grove Collective Executive Director Walker Jones explains the conversation has already started about how to best position the Rebels post-House: “The limited information we have is there will be two buckets of money: the revenue-sharing that’s mandated from the settlement and incremental, third-party, market-based NIL. The second bucket, NIL, will be much harder to police and value, and there isn’t going to be a cap to it. One school might say, ‘We’re gonna spend another $30M on top of that rev-share.’ Another school might say, ‘Well, we only have $5M we can spend.’” Jones’ task is making sure the Rebels have closer to the former. The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman checks in with Big Ten COO Kerry Kenny to discuss how cross-country travel is impacting the newly expanded league. Kenny acknowledges much has been made about how opponents traveling two or more time zones away have fared and tells Dochterman: “Factoring in the competitive factor of the teams that were favored to win versus the teams that were underdogs, whether they were home or away, I think there’s just a lot of information. Before we make any sort of decisions as a conference, in conjunction with our schools and media partners, etc., we just need to see how the rest of this year plays out.” The league’s approach is to use the first seasons of the expanded conference to digest feedback across all sports in areas such as sports medicine, academics, operations, equipment and more. “Each week of the season, let’s try and gather that feedback and try and not make any rash decisions in the middle of a conference season. Let’s use it as an opportunity to make sure that we’re improving…down the line.” The conference is also working through the issue of Friday games, with Dochterman noting Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State’s stadium sizes make Friday games intractable and Nebraska has formally requested to restrict its Friday slate to Black Friday. Commissioner Tony Petitti: “When we’ve talked about Fridays, put aside the Nebraska situation, we’re not trying to disrupt and have the burden of Fridays fall to just a handful of schools. We’re trying to make sure that we’re fair and we spread things out. For some places, it might be easier. They may want to play more, and so it’s just understanding that and learning it.” More. (link)

Awful Announcing’s Drew Lerner notes that ABC’s Saturday college football telecasts are averaging 5.85M viewers so far this season, while NBC is averaging 3.38M, CBS is averaging 3.13M and Fox is averaging 2.62M. “Those numbers alone don’t tell the entire story. NBC and CBS have aired fewer than half the number of games that ABC has this season. So ABC is maintaining a substantially higher average audience across more than double the broadcast windows, an impressive feat. … ABC is up a ridiculous 41% in viewership versus the same point last year when the network was averaging 4.15M viewers per window. No doubt, the new SEC package is helping them along. But perhaps overlooked in this analysis is the decline of Disney’s other premier college football destination: ESPN. This season, Saturday ESPN college football games have averaged an audience of 1.86M viewers across 36 television windows. That is down substantially from the same point last season when ESPN was averaging 2.53M across 32 television windows.” Lerner points out that Disney airing its best games on ABC rather than ESPN is a particularly tough pill for cable providers to swallow because “when Disney decides to move its most valuable programming off of ESPN and onto ABC, which can be accessed for free over-the-air without a pay-TV subscription, it devalues the cable or satellite bundle that customers pay for. And when customers pay more for less, they cut the cord at increasingly fast rates. … Disney opting to put its best stuff on ABC at the expense of ESPN is just one more indicator that the bundle as we know it will be gone soon.” More. Connecticut Women’s Basketball HC Geno Auriemma says of NIL: "I think it’s a test. It’s a test for whether people are full of sh-t or whether they’re serious. It’s a test for do we keep the charade of student-athlete and amateurism or do we call it what it is: semi-professional, pay-for-play sports? Either keep the charade of student-athlete – teams wouldn’t be going 3,000 miles to play conference games if it had anything to do with student athlete welfare, that’s number one, so we obviously threw that in the garbage can, so let's just call it what it is…and then let’s make it a business and figure out how do we manage this business. Other sports have done it. Pro sports have done it. They sign kids to contracts, and you're bound to your contract, and let's honor the terms of the contract. Let’s do it. You’ve already got kids holding out. You’ve already got guys playing and going ‘I ain't playing anymore until I get more money.’ So we've become professional sports. " He adds of the transfer portal: “How about we teach kids how to make a commitment and stick to it? … A coach can leave anytime he wants. I can. I have a buyout. That’s a great idea, let's sign kids to a contract and let’s put a buyout in it. Let’s make it a business because that's exactly what it is. That would fix it. And let's have a salary cap. … So, they're getting close, but they’ve got to start calling what it really is and not be ashamed of it. The kids aren't ashamed of it.” (link)

Temple has suspended men’s basketball student-athlete Lynn Greer III and AC Chris Clark for “separate and unrelated” incidents. Greer will sit the first nine games of the campaign while Clark will be away from the team for “the same timeline,” according to The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jeff Neiberg, who reports: “Greer committed NCAA rules violations while at his previous school, St. Joseph’s. Clark is being suspended until Dec. 11 ‘for providing impermissible benefits to student-athletes.’” Owls HC Adam Fisher: “The Temple men’s basketball program will support Lynn and Chris through their suspensions and will welcome them back in December. We acknowledge that they made these mistakes, and it is unfortunate, but they are part of our family and we will get through this together.” The nature of Greer’s violations remains unclear. (link)
