As athletic departments prepare themselves for a post-House settlement landscape, Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports some schools have “eliminated roster spots and, for some, scholarship offers that they were once promised. Meanwhile, several dozen current college athletes are being notified that they are no longer part of their teams – some of the notifications arriving after the fall semester even began.” Dellenger indicates the new roster caps will result in “thousands of lost roster spots for mostly walk-on athletes and those on partial scholarship — a consequence that, while previously reported by Yahoo Sports, has now sparked outrage from hundreds of parents of athletes or prospective athletes whose spots have been or will soon be eliminated. Nearly 20,000 parents and athletes are members of a Facebook page related to the issue, and they are mobilizing in what is now a public fight against the new policies, said Tom Wiegand, an attorney with MoloLamken, a national firm based in New York, Washington D.C. and Chicago. The firm is in the process of authoring an objection to the settlement over the roster limits.” Dellenger goes on to report that “at one SEC school, eight track and field runners were cut or pushed out over the summer. One power conference program released all of their 2025 men’s swimming commitments. And in football, it is estimated that more than 1,500 walk-on players — roughly 20-30 per team — will see their spots cut. In all, the 68 power conference schools are expected to eliminate at least 3,000 roster positions as administrators work to adhere to new roster limitations, reallocate resources from lower-tier to revenue-generating sports, and balance men and women opportunities to comply with the federal Title IX law.” College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America Executive Director Samantha Barany: “Someone might say we are taking better care of our student-athletes with the settlement. I’d say we are taking better care of a percentage of our student-athletes.” Lots more. (link)

College Football Realignment publisher Bill Farley pens a guest post for Extra Points reporting from this week’s Idaho Board of Education meeting, which included remarks from Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey, Idaho AD Terry Gawlick and Idaho State AD Pauline Thiros. Idaho State does not plan to cut any athletic programs, but Thiros expressed hope that pressure could be brought to bear on the NCAA to make the Power 4 schools take a greater share of the back pay settlement. Thiros, who says the Bengals are seriously considering opting into the House settlement, also noted the department is starting to negotiate cost reductions with vendors at Idaho State and will explore new revenue opportunities made available by the NCAA. Dickey remarked that Idaho schools are holding a “golden ticket” because they’re located in a state without pro sports teams. Per Farley, Dickey “sees the House settlement as an opportunity, but one that is still not clearly defined. Nevertheless, Boise State plans to opt in and is creating Bronco Pro as a subsidiary of the athletic department. Bronco Pro will merge with the current collective and share revenue with athletes. He acknowledged it was difficult “building a plane while flying it,” but the timeline of the House Settlement (approval in April 2025 and implementation in July 2025) leaves no room to wait for complete clarity.” Gawlick voiced concerns that roster limits may require the Vandals to cut some student-athletes to meet those limits, and in turn, upset Title IX compliance. She is not exploring any new revenue sources, but rather is focused on helping athletes access NIL opportunities in the local Moscow community. More. (link)

Grand Canyon has an offer to join the Mountain West, JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher reports, adding that Lopes AD Jamie Boggs and GCU President Brian Mueller were both no-shows for the WCC’s executive cabinet meeting this week. Their absence “caused a stir in the room…while the conference ADs absorbed the impact and discussed what might come next.” One AD compared the situation to a kid ghosting another kid in middle school: “If a girl doesn’t reply, it’s obvious she wants to break up with you.” According to Canzano, “the framework for the Mountain West’s offer to GCU includes a $3.5M entry fee that would be paid to the conference, per a source. The Antelopes would receive a guaranteed $1.5M in media-rights distributions over the next six years. GCU is paying a $16M entry fee to enter the WCC next summer.” The question, then, is whether the Lopes defect to the Mountain West or renegotiate with the WCC. It would owe the league a $1M buyout were it to leave. Canzano: “The prevailing thought when GCU agreed to join the WCC last May was that the school wouldn’t stay very long. Nobody expected it could be a matter of months, however. Several sources told me that GCU ultimately wants to be in the new-world Pac-12. The Pac-12 has not extended an offer to the Antelopes and appears focused on its media rights negotiations and the addition of one more ‘all sports’ school.” (link)

The Minnesota-affiliated Dinkytown Athletes has received a $1M commitment from Twin Cities business man Mark Pearson & his financial services firm Nepsis. Pearson: “We believe, with the concept of mentoring with clarity, we can help bring greater clarity, understanding and guiding players and guiding our clients, in general. To help them make the best decisions to maximize their returns, minimize their taxes and take advantage of financial opportunities.” (link); The Gophers are also dipping their toe into the “cap management” personnel space with the listing for a new “House Settlement Negotiator,” per Sportico’s Daniel Libit. Of note: “The school says it is prioritizing applicants with experience in managing a professional sports team’s salary cap. [...] Travis Cameron, U of M’s associate AD/chief revenue officer, suggested in a phone interview that the job posting was more of a trial balloon than dead-set commitment to how exactly the department will proceed. It remains unresolved, for example, to what extent the work of paying players will be done internally or farmed out to outside companies.” More from Cameron: “Everyone is sitting with their hand on the same button. We are all having the same conversations. Everybody wants to figure out what’s best, because there is a lot of opportunity to change the trajectory of your program if you do it right.” (link)

Fresno State is on pace to beat last year’s football ticket revenue of $5.3M. So far, the Bulldogs are averaging 40,380 fans per home game, up from 39,067 last season, and the Bulldogs have a chance to lead all Group of Five conference programs in attendance for a second year in a row. Senior Assoc. AD for External Relations Frank Pucher: “We’ve left no stone unturned in our efforts to make home football games the can’t miss events in the Valley each fall. We’ve utilized new technologies and a content-driven approach to engage fans, and prospective fans, across all segments and demographics of our community and this passionate Red Wave has responded incredibly well.” With an upcoming move to the Pac-12, Bulldogs AD Garrett Klassy is confident the department can increase its budget. “We’re aware of that. I was hired here for my background in revenue generation and I think we have a distinct advantage here. We can press on some new revenue opportunities. I’ve told everybody this. This is the start of the journey. We’re not sitting around celebrating that we made the Pac-12. We have to understand we’re at the bottom of the mountain. We have to keep climbing to the top. I think because of the people in the valley and the coaches we’ve had here, we have covered up a lot of our deficiencies for a long time, primarily facilities. We’re going to work really hard to create new revenue streams and create a championship experience for our student athletes.” (link)

St. John’s Men’s Basketball HC Rick Pitino suggests creating a super league of hoops teams to counteract the league’s lack of football. "I don't have a say in that at all. If I was to, I'd want something to combat football. Whether it's 18 teams, 20 teams, super league, something needs to combat football because it's just taken over our whole landscape. … Are we good enough with just 11 [teams] to protect ourselves? I'm not sure. … I'm not a big believer in worrying about money. I think that most businesses that become super successful don't, whether it's Uber or Amazon or whoever. Maybe they don't make money at the beginning, they go through five to six, seven-year periods where you'd lose a lot of money and then they'd become mega companies. So I would not be concerned about sharing revenue rights and things like that. I would just say, 'Look 10 years down the road where you want to be.'" As for how he suggests the league should expand, Pitino emphasizes the importance of regionality and suggests Dayton would be a fit. “I would not go to the West Coast. I heard about Gonzaga. I thought that was foolish, to be honest with you. I think it's foolish for UCLA to go to play Penn State. I think it's too long a trip, but that's what football will do for you.” (link)

South Carolina will rename its Baseball stadium Ray Tanner Field at Founders Park after a $2.5M donation from a group of Gamecock supporters. USC AD Ray Tanner: “The accomplishments that I have been a part of at the University of South Carolina is due to the wonderful support of our University administration, Gamecock student-athletes, coaches, staff and fans. This is a tremendous gesture from my friends and donors. I am grateful for their commitment to this project. Our baseball program is one of the best in the nation and will continue to compete for championships as we begin the Paul Mainieri era at USC.” USC’s partnership with Founders Federal Credit Union runs through 2035. The proposed upgrades to the bowl will provide Panther fans a variety of seating options and styles with increased comfort and high-end amenities.” Phase 2 is expected to cost $16M with $9M already raised. We offer our deepest sympathies to the USF community following the passing of Men’s Basketball HC Amir Abdur-Rahim. According to the school, Abdur-Rahim was undergoing a medical procedure at a Tampa-area hospital when he died due to complications that arose. Bulls AD Michael Kelly: "All of us with South Florida Athletics are grieving with the loved ones of Coach Abdur-Rahim. He was authentic, driven, and his infectious personality captivated all of Bulls Nation. Coach Abdur-Rahim leaves a lasting impact on our student-athletes, the University, and the community. We are supporting those closest to him, including his family, team, and athletics staff, to ensure they have the resources they need to deal with this tremendous loss." (link)

Former Penn State AD Sandy Barbour joins the Now It’s Legal Podcast with Athletes.org Co-Founder Jim Cavale to discuss her involvement with the Football Oversight Committee and DI Council, making decisions based on improving student-athletes’ wellbeing, promoting student-athletes' personal growth and more. Barbour, who also serves as an AO board member, acknowledges the industry is in the position it is largely because of inaction in the recent past. “I’ll raise my hand, I was part of the feet-dragging for however many years that you want to put that label on it. And it was out of fear [of] what's something radically different look like? But we've come to a point where we've got to have a solution; otherwise, something that we've all worked so hard to help build and help be really impactful for student-athletes was really going to suffer. And I'm sure we'll talk about the House settlement. I'm in favor of the House settlement not because I think it's perfect, but because I think it's a step. It gets us off the dime. It gets us headed towards what can be solutions that benefit first and foremost student-athletes, but institutions and the enterprise of college sports that is meant so much to so many with student-athletes at the top of that list.” Barbour also explains that “one of the challenges that athletic directors have today – and it's because of the litigation [and] this is going to sound really strange if you haven't already heard – they're being told they can't talk to their student-athletes because their student-athletes are plaintiffs and the athletic directors and the athletic departments and the institutions are the defendants.” Moving forward with the House settlement, Barbour wants to make sure student-athletes are fully aware of what it means to opt in or out. “Certainly not going to tell anyone here’s what I think you ought to do, but I want to make sure when they pull the proverbial lever to say I’m opting in or opting out that they know what that means. And I think right now this ‘plaintiffs and defendants can’t talk to each other’ – and I know that’s not a 100% bright line – but that's the kind of advice some athletic directors are getting at many institutions.” Lots more. Ohio State AD Ross Bjork sits down with The Lantern student newspaper and says it’s fair to point out that Football HC Ryan Day is 2-6 overall in top-five matchups but adds: “My job is to figure out with Coach Day, are there any barriers? What are you analyzing as we go through this? What are you looking at in terms of watching the film or watching the schematics or watching the game plan? What led up to that particular game or that particular moment? My job is just to support him, help him through that, help him analyze any deficiencies that might be there, but we gotta remember, we lost to the No. 3 team on the road by one point and had the ball, had a chance to win.” Bjork goes on to say OSU is still working through the details of Project 36: “How we spend our money is what we’re really focusing on right now. What does that look like, knowing that we’re gonna have a new expense of at least $21M or $22M of revenue share that we'll be able to really distribute to the athletes? And so, we’re working on what sports receive that revenue share … We want to protect 36 sports, so we have principles. Protect 36 sports, make sure we continue to focus on academics. We have a 96% graduation and placement rate of our athletes. Let's make sure we maintain that our GPA of all of our student-athletes is over a 3.3. So, focus on academics, focus on competitive success.” More from Bjork. (link)

Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey addresses several topics in a letter to fans and notes that “in addition to selling out Albertsons Stadium for the entire season, our men's basketball season ticket total has climbed above 8,000 for the first time in program history, and soccer leads the Mountain West and is 21st in the country in average attendance.” In regards to the House settlement, Dickey explains the Broncos “are creating our strategic plan of what this looks like for Boise State as we continue to strive for championships and elevate our strong brand across 18 sport programs. We will continue to compete at the highest level of collegiate athletics and revenue-sharing is a key component of that going forward.” To that end, Dickey indicates the department is “working tirelessly to build the best-in-class revenue-sharing organization in the country, where we will welcome and provide turnkey services for all student-athletes who wear the Blue and Orange. We will drive our competitive advantage through alternative funding concepts, franchise workflow and technology, contracts, and immersive brand development strategies tailored for student-athletes who want to Bleed Blue. We expect to unveil this newly-branded organization soon and begin working on several innovative revenue sharing activities.” Full letter. (link)

Alcorn State AD E. D'Wayne Robinson addresses reports of subpar conditions for the women’s soccer team: “The administration, along with myself, we’ve put together a plan that's being addressed. The president is definitely engaged in that plan as far as building up not only just our soccer program, but our entire athletics department from a facilities standpoint. So, all things are being addressed and have been addressed, so not to worry, we’re going to be in a great place.” (link)

Texas Southern AD Kevin Granger covers several topics with the Black Sports Insiders podcast, including how HBCUs can continue to provide opportunities for student-athletes: “I think us as HBCUs have to get creative. I think we're in a new era, we're in a new age, we're in the NIL age, although most of the time HBCUs, we don't have the heavy resources as other schools. So, we’ve got to get creative. We have to be able to offer student-athletes opportunities, they may not be the same opportunity that they are provided or afforded at a PWI, but you have to be able to play and be in the ball game if you want your program to continue to thrive. It’s one of the main reasons why we set out on this quest about three years ago to take a deep dive and make sure we started upgrading our facilities. If you know in this day and time it’s the first thing recruits want to look at when they come to your campus, they want to see the bells and whistles.” Granger also says a football stadium is in the future but notes that Texas state funds can’t be used for facilities, so there is still some fundraising that needs to happen. More from Granger. (link)

Missouri State AD Patrick Ransdell Q&As with the Springfield Daily Citizen’s Ryan Collingwood and says of Springfield’s ability to provide financial support: “I think we have the donor support and the corporate support for the things we want to do. Everyone has said they’re all in and want to help. Over the next six months, we’re going to give them the opportunity to follow through on what they’ve said. We’re going to find out real quick whether everyone is all-in to helping us.” Ransdell says of NIL: “Right now we have three collectives. Do we need to consolidate that and make it more streamlined? You see a lot of schools out there that have their own general manager, so to speak, who manages all of that. So is that something we need to look at? Because right now we have some community members helping, but they have full-time jobs, too. At some point, though, it becomes a full-time job. With the recent House settlement, we need to take inventory of what revenue-sharing looks like. You’re allowed to go up to $22M. Obviously, that’s well outside of our purview. But as we increase our revenues, can we maybe look at some things that we can dictate?” On the elimination of the NLI: “Theoretically, it’s supposed to streamline some things but my compliance office says that may not be the case. What’s more practical (that the NCAA recently announced) is the transfer (portal) windows being shortened. I think that’s going to help our coaches and roster management and help them know things a little bit earlier.” (link)

Harvard is looking for ways to increase attendance at football games, and Crimson AD Erin McDermott says the athletic department is emphasizing the effectiveness of “peer-to-peer” advertising that relies on word-of-mouth. “That's the next step. People come and then you're all talking about it, and then it makes other people think ‘OK, maybe I'll give this a shot.’” Senior Assoc. AD for Business Development Nick Majocha notes there is also a need to make genuine connections with the student body. “We know that if Harvard Athletics or Harvard College throws a party or a tailgate, no one's going to come. It has to be promoted and organized by the students, so we're trying to support those efforts with space and some resources, and then we're trying to let the students really run the events. We’re just trying to amplify them.” With Yale set to return to Cambridge for The Game this season, Majocha acknowledges there were too many tailgating restrictions for the 2022 iteration. “They realized that it was too restrictive two years ago, and that led to low attendance, and it led to offshoot parties. The goal here is to have one tailgate that appeals to the whole undergraduate population and the Yale population that comes to visit that weekend.” Asst. AD for Business Strategy and Innovation Andrew Zingone emphasizes the need to create an environment that is “organically Harvard,” adding: “It's easy to point to a Harvard football game and compare it to Alabama football, but you don't see anyone comparing an Alabama math class and a Harvard math class.” (link)

Michigan State is asking a U.S. District Court to dismiss the wrongful termination lawsuit brought by former Football HC Mel Tucker using verbiage like “meritless” and an “$80 million conspiracy.” More: “Tucker’s claims all fail on the face of the pleadings, which include his employment contract and related records. And most of Tucker’s claims are also barred by federal and state qualified immunities.” (link)

San Diego State has received an anonymous $1.5M pledge toward the construction of a Golf performance center at The Farms Golf Club, as well as the installation of two simulators on campus.
