Horizon League Commissioner Julie Roe Lach joins Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz from the 2024 Women Leaders Convention to discuss networking tips and when to follow-up after meeting a new colleague. Lach also contrasts her vision for the league upon taking the job with the reality of implementing it over the past three years and explains why she’s committed to pouring into college athletics as it continues to evolve and change. Lach explains the challenges facing the league are twofold and begin with how to address the House settlement. “Are we opting in or not? I believe we’re trending towards that because we want to continue to compete nationally in basketball, and I think that's going to be part of that formula. Still tough though because roster sizes will change so there may be some phase-in, but that is a very layered decision. It’s not black and white, as most things aren't, but I think that really because it intersects with parts of our higher ed institutions that move way beyond just the doors of the athletics department.” Lach on why she chooses to stay in college athletics: “Our student-athletes, they are getting it done. But then you see how much they value the experience and they care. They care about where their championships are, they care about what the brackets look like because it matters. So, to me, that's why it's still really exciting to be a part of it.” More on Connect. (link)

Harvard AD Erin McDermott acknowledges the Crimson could be in a disadvantageous position when recruiting low-income student-athletes due to NIL but notes the athletic department is working to create a more “tangible” pitch for choosing the school. “It’s a lifelong decision — it’s a 40-year decision versus a four-year decision. To a family that is coming from different circumstances, or the lower socioeconomic circumstances, that may be very fuzzy and hazy to them. … You won’t just be viewed by the school as an athlete, and that’s what you're there to do. You are here to be truly a student-athlete.” McDermott also hopes to ensure all payments to student-athletes are for true NIL deals rather than from collectives. “What we are not okay with — and it’s not even legal, but I know the reality is it’s happening in other places — is these truly more pay-for-play payments that are coming directly from donors that are just banding together and deciding what sums of money they might provide to athletes on a team.” She notes the figure Harvard will have to pay for the House settlement is neither “ridiculous” nor “nominal,” adding: “It’s, I think, going to be at a level that we’ll notice. But it’s not going to change the experience that we’re providing.” (link)

After spending two years painstakingly building a roster designed to make the 12-team College Football Playoff this year, Ole Miss may be on the outside looking in. Regardless of how the season plays out, Rebels AD Keith Carter tells The Athletic’s David Ubben: “This isn’t a one-shot wonder. We’re going to continually build rosters that are relevant nationally and in the top 12 and trying to get into the Playoff every year. If we don’t get in the Playoff this year, it isn’t over. We’re just getting started.” The Grove Collective Executive Director Walker Jones explains the conversation has already started about how to best position the Rebels post-House: “The limited information we have is there will be two buckets of money: the revenue-sharing that’s mandated from the settlement and incremental, third-party, market-based NIL. The second bucket, NIL, will be much harder to police and value, and there isn’t going to be a cap to it. One school might say, ‘We’re gonna spend another $30M on top of that rev-share.’ Another school might say, ‘Well, we only have $5M we can spend.’” Jones’ task is making sure the Rebels have closer to the former. TKO Group Holdings will acquire three sports businesses from its largest shareholder, Endeavor Group Holdings, for $3.25B in stock, according to Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw. Specifically, TKO will acquire the Professional Bull Riders league, On Location and IMG. Axios’ Tim Baysinger adds: “Hours after it announced a deal to sell IMG, On Location and Pro Bull Riders to TKO Group, Endeavor says it's putting IMG-owned events including Miami Open and Madrid Open up for sale. It's also looking to sell sports betting and data firms OpenBet and IMG Arena.” (link, link)

The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman checks in with Big Ten COO Kerry Kenny to discuss how cross-country travel is impacting the newly expanded league. Kenny acknowledges much has been made about how opponents traveling two or more time zones away have fared and tells Dochterman: “Factoring in the competitive factor of the teams that were favored to win versus the teams that were underdogs, whether they were home or away, I think there’s just a lot of information. Before we make any sort of decisions as a conference, in conjunction with our schools and media partners, etc., we just need to see how the rest of this year plays out.” The league’s approach is to use the first seasons of the expanded conference to digest feedback across all sports in areas such as sports medicine, academics, operations, equipment and more. “Each week of the season, let’s try and gather that feedback and try and not make any rash decisions in the middle of a conference season. Let’s use it as an opportunity to make sure that we’re improving…down the line.” The conference is also working through the issue of Friday games, with Dochterman noting Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State’s stadium sizes make Friday games intractable and Nebraska has formally requested to restrict its Friday slate to Black Friday. Commissioner Tony Petitti: “When we’ve talked about Fridays, put aside the Nebraska situation, we’re not trying to disrupt and have the burden of Fridays fall to just a handful of schools. We’re trying to make sure that we’re fair and we spread things out. For some places, it might be easier. They may want to play more, and so it’s just understanding that and learning it.” More. (link)

Awful Announcing’s Drew Lerner notes that ABC’s Saturday college football telecasts are averaging 5.85M viewers so far this season, while NBC is averaging 3.38M, CBS is averaging 3.13M and Fox is averaging 2.62M. “Those numbers alone don’t tell the entire story. NBC and CBS have aired fewer than half the number of games that ABC has this season. So ABC is maintaining a substantially higher average audience across more than double the broadcast windows, an impressive feat. … ABC is up a ridiculous 41% in viewership versus the same point last year when the network was averaging 4.15M viewers per window. No doubt, the new SEC package is helping them along. But perhaps overlooked in this analysis is the decline of Disney’s other premier college football destination: ESPN. This season, Saturday ESPN college football games have averaged an audience of 1.86M viewers across 36 television windows. That is down substantially from the same point last season when ESPN was averaging 2.53M across 32 television windows.” Lerner points out that Disney airing its best games on ABC rather than ESPN is a particularly tough pill for cable providers to swallow because “when Disney decides to move its most valuable programming off of ESPN and onto ABC, which can be accessed for free over-the-air without a pay-TV subscription, it devalues the cable or satellite bundle that customers pay for. And when customers pay more for less, they cut the cord at increasingly fast rates. … Disney opting to put its best stuff on ABC at the expense of ESPN is just one more indicator that the bundle as we know it will be gone soon.” More. Connecticut Women’s Basketball HC Geno Auriemma says of NIL: "I think it’s a test. It’s a test for whether people are full of sh-t or whether they’re serious. It’s a test for do we keep the charade of student-athlete and amateurism or do we call it what it is: semi-professional, pay-for-play sports? Either keep the charade of student-athlete – teams wouldn’t be going 3,000 miles to play conference games if it had anything to do with student athlete welfare, that’s number one, so we obviously threw that in the garbage can, so let's just call it what it is…and then let’s make it a business and figure out how do we manage this business. Other sports have done it. Pro sports have done it. They sign kids to contracts, and you're bound to your contract, and let's honor the terms of the contract. Let’s do it. You’ve already got kids holding out. You’ve already got guys playing and going ‘I ain't playing anymore until I get more money.’ So we've become professional sports. " He adds of the transfer portal: “How about we teach kids how to make a commitment and stick to it? … A coach can leave anytime he wants. I can. I have a buyout. That’s a great idea, let's sign kids to a contract and let’s put a buyout in it. Let’s make it a business because that's exactly what it is. That would fix it. And let's have a salary cap. … So, they're getting close, but they’ve got to start calling what it really is and not be ashamed of it. The kids aren't ashamed of it.” (link)

Temple has suspended men’s basketball student-athlete Lynn Greer III and AC Chris Clark for “separate and unrelated” incidents. Greer will sit the first nine games of the campaign while Clark will be away from the team for “the same timeline,” according to The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jeff Neiberg, who reports: “Greer committed NCAA rules violations while at his previous school, St. Joseph’s. Clark is being suspended until Dec. 11 ‘for providing impermissible benefits to student-athletes.’” Owls HC Adam Fisher: “The Temple men’s basketball program will support Lynn and Chris through their suspensions and will welcome them back in December. We acknowledge that they made these mistakes, and it is unfortunate, but they are part of our family and we will get through this together.” The nature of Greer’s violations remains unclear. (link)

More from incoming Pittsburgh AD Allen Greene’s introductory press conference, where Greene cited his past AD experience as a strength coming into the job. “I’ve sat in the chair. I’ve done it before at a pretty high level. Nothing rocks me. I might be surprised by certain things, but hopefully steady leadership and helping the staff understand what lies ahead and just keep people focused on the big picture.” Greene explained that when dealing with the myriad changes facing college athletics, “we want to take calculated risks. Now is not a time to sit back, put our feet up on the table and see what’s happening in the world. We don’t want to react. … We may not be perfect. We may make mistakes. We may make a poor decision, but we’re going to make decisions and execute them in an appropriate manner. I once read a quote from a CEO that says, ‘Don’t worry about making the right decision. Worry about making the decision right.’” As far as his familiarity with the Panthers’ financial situation, Greene said he doesn’t have a full picture yet. “I know enough to be a little bit dangerous. Once I spend time going through our balance sheet, that will give me a better understanding of what resources need to go where and how we best allocate those.” Meanwhile, Panthers Men’s Basketball HC Jeff Capel was direct in noting what resources his program needs the most: “We need money. It’s NIL.” Capel added: “I love the fact that he talked about being innovative [in fundraising]. … I think it’s important to be innovative. Not to be reactive, but to have ideas and be willing to take risks the right way while maintaining integrity and following the rules.” (link, link)

Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman joins CBS’ Matt Norlander at Big East Media Day and talks about the conference’s role during the hoops season: “Our job is to lobby on behalf of our schools. There’s an organized, orderly way to do that. The NCAA Selection Committee assigns two monitors from the committee to every conference. We are allowed four calls with our monitors over the course of the season. We have been lauded – I’m not trying to be immodest – we've been lauded by the committee for the preparation that we put into our calls. The paperwork that we supply to our monitors who, in turn, pass that along to the committee, all the team sheets and whatnot, we give them exactly what they want. … Other leagues, we’ve become a model for them in terms of how to present information.” After getting just three teams into last year’s men’s tournament, Ackerman explains the league has hired HDI as a consultant and “reinforce things we've been preaching for years about non-conference scheduling, and my sense is that we made some inroads on that. The key for us this year is to stay out of Quad 4 territory. If we can lift up the bottom so we're Q3 so games against those Q3 teams aren't having the same impact as if they were Q4. … And then last but not least we said to our schools, ‘Here's the advice: Don't be a bubble team.” In regards to Connecticut’s conversations with the Big 12, Ackerman remarks: “I think what was troublesome to me, candidly, was that our intelligence was telling us that the votes [from Big 12 presidents in favor of adding UConn] weren’t going to be there. … And so the fact that it did drag out and it was very public, I think, was a disservice to be honest because no one comes out of that very good when it doesn't happen.” More on that and other topics. College Hockey Insider’s Mike McMahon fields questions about the impact of the House settlement and whether NIL can/will create less parity in the sport. On House: “I do believe things could get ugly at some schools. Several ADs have already talked about cutting sports to fund football and basketball. They’re openly discussing it in interviews. That’s terrifying. If some ADs, or presidents, or board of trustees don’t see a path to competitiveness in college hockey, and those same people want to direct more money at football and basketball, it’s a definite possibility.” McMahon adds of NIL: “Yeah, I don’t think there’s any question there. And it’s going to be a combination of NIL, revenue-sharing, and more. But I do believe college hockey is heading down a path where a lot of the top talent will be centralized on 8-10 rosters. That’s why some coaches have privately discussed a two-tier system, like FBS and FCS in football.” Meanwhile, WHL Commissioner Dan Near chimes in on the NCAA’s decision to allow CHL players: "We see ourselves as the best development option for kids between 16-20 and anytime we don't get a high-end kid we're disappointed. And we'd argue that in a lot of cases, they've been making the decision to go elsewhere to preserve NCAA eligibility, and in theory, that wouldn't happen, and all of the best players would play in the best league, which I think checks out for us. We're not arrogant. We don't necessarily think that every player will play in the WHL through their 20-year-old year but we believe that the strong majority will. And we're not just going to sit here and rest on our laurels, we're going to react." OHL Commissioner Bryan Crawford adds: "I don't think that any of us are closed off to any of the possibilities and that includes the draft potentially being earlier. That's also part of what we've been looking at as a group in the CHL is, ‘Do those sorts of things need to be aligned and harmonized so that we all have the same draft rules and those sorts of things?' I think there's an incredible number of considerations that need to be looked at that have far-reaching ramifications of a change like this (from the NCAA)." (link)

Louisville has agreed to pay former Deputy University Counsel/Assoc. AD for Administration Amy Shoemaker $750K to settle a lawsuit in which Shoemaker claimed she was demoted after she angered former UofL President Neeli Bendapudi by telling police about an extortion attempt by former Men’s Basketball AC Dino Gaudio. As part of the settlement, the university denied the validity of Shoemaker’s claims and both sides agreed to keep the settlement confidential. WDRB obtained the settlement through the open records law. (link)

The Athletic’s CJ Moore profiles Iowa State’s unique approach to building its men’s basketball roster, explaining that HC T.J. Otzelberger “has turned the Cyclones into a winner by building the best defense in college basketball and finding hidden gems on the recruiting trail. His methodology is pretty simple: Iowa State works fast, isn’t afraid to go after a guy not on anyone else’s list and has specific criteria each player must meet, most of which have nothing to do with the stat sheet.” Alabama HC Nate Oats, who took his staff to watch the Cyclones practice this fall, observes: “They’re not going to take a kid that’s not going to fully buy in to playing as hard as they’re going to play. Everybody on the team you can tell is 100% bought in on playing the way that they need them to play to win. They’ve definitely taken less talent and done more with it than anybody I’ve seen in college basketball.” Otzelberger, Moore continues, “doesn’t want guys who prioritize NIL or want to be promised anything. He prefers telling recruits the truth and then seeing if they agree with his assessment.” Otzelberger explains: “What Iowa State attracts and what this part of the country attracts is people who like to roll up their sleeves and do the hard work.” Cyclones AD Jamie Pollard adds: “Iowa State’s going to be who Iowa State is. And do we have to play in that [NIL] space? Yes. But we’re never going to be a school that’s going to go buy it. … We’ve been doing NIL for three years. So Iowa State has proven that what we’re doing works. And doesn’t mean we’re spending the least, but it also doesn’t mean we’re spending the most. We’re spending it correctly.” More. (link)

The Toledo Blade’s Dave Briggs criticizes CBS Sports Network’s decision to air Ohio-Buffalo this Saturday rather than Bowling Green-Toledo. “CBS is not prophetic. When it had to make its selection 12 days ago, Ohio and Buffalo were both unbeaten in the league. The network could not have known both teams would lose Saturday while Toledo (5-2, 2-1) and Bowling Green (3-4, 2-1) would both win. But, really, the details are beside the point. ESPN and its partners have always said one thing — Toledo-BG is a special rivalry we want to showcase! — and done the exact opposite.” Briggs also notes that Rockets and Falcons have played five weeknight games since 2017, and the network has carried just one of them on ESPN or ESPN2. “To ESPN and CBS, the game is just another interchangeable piece of low-cost inventory to slap on the air. To Toledo and Bowling Green — and every other league school with a rivalry that brings its community together — it is an unsurpassed civic celebration.” One MAC AD told Briggs before the season: “I hate, hate, hate taking our rivalry games and not playing those on Saturdays. That’s a travesty and I’m not sure there's a dollar figure on that to make up for it. Big crowds with a rival on a Saturday and what that does for the community vs. the minimal amount you get from ESPN to play them on a Tuesday night, that to me is a travesty to everything we are trying to build.” Briggs: “Couldn’t say it any better.” (link)

Sponsorship revenue for Connecticut’s men’s basketball program is up 10% YoY, according to SBJ’s Terry Lefton, who reports: “The biggest new program benefactor is hair color and salon brand Madison Reed, which now has its corporate moniker and naming rights to the court at Gampel Pavilion. … Other new commercial patrons (among the program's 75 or so brands) are: Old Dominion Freight Line (which sponsors more than 40 universities through multimedia rights holder Learfield); Visit Central Florida; Urban Lodge, which has an official Husky hangout designation and a UConn-themed beer (adding to fellow UConn beermakers Kinsmen Brewing and Two Roads); and Waypoint Spirits is marketing a number of ready-to-drink canned cocktails under the Husky Spirit brand. Meanwhile, the Connecticut Lottery, a returning sponsor, will have scratch-off games on sale next month proclaiming the state as the ‘Basketball Capital of the World.’” (link)

Undergraduate enrollment rose this fall for the second year in a row, up 3% compared to similar early data from fall 2023. According to preliminary figures released by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, enrollment jumped 1.9% in bachelor’s degree programs and 4.3% in those for associate degrees. While all credential types saw gains, the number of undergraduate certificate seekers increased the most, at 7.3%; however, enrollment among first-year students shrank 5%, the first dip since the decline seen at the start of the pandemic. Declining enrollment among 18-year-olds — a proxy for students who attend college directly after high school — accounted for most of that drop, the NSRC said. Narrowing it down further, public and private nonprofit four-year institutions saw more limited undergraduate growth, at 2.2% and 1.4%, respectively, than for-profit four-year colleges and public two-year colleges. Hispanic, Black, Asian and multiracial populations all saw undergraduate enrollment increases of at least 4% year over year. White undergraduate students were the only racial or ethnic group showing a decline, dropping by 0.6%. (link); Full report. (link); Meanwhile, average net tuition and fees for first-time, full-time students at private nonprofit colleges increased about 2% YoY to $16,510 for the 2024-25 academic year when adjusted for inflation, according to a study released Monday by the nonprofit College Board. At public four-year institutions, the same costs declined by 2% to $2,480 when adjusted for inflation. As with private colleges, net tuition and fees in 2024 dollars remain well below levels seen before the 2020-21 year. (link)

The actual price of tuition at many of the country’s colleges continued a steady, decade-long decline as the sector enters an era of shrinking high-school enrollments and greater competition, according to analysis released by the College Board. The Chronicle of Higher Education’s Dan Bauman explains that “while sticker prices have continued to balloon to as large as $100K at some private, nonprofit universities, the average net price — the remaining cost of tuition after institutional and grant aid is deducted — for undergraduate students entering their freshman year at these institutions clocked in at $16,510 for the 2024-25 academic year, down from $19,330 in 2006-07 (adjusted for inflation to 2024 dollars). Net prices at public institutions followed similar trend lines: $2,480 was the average amount charged in 2024-25 at in-state, four-year institutions, down from $4,340 in 2012-13 (inflation adjusted); and, according to the College Board, freshmen attending two-year colleges continue to receive on average enough grant aid to cover tuition and fees, a trend that dates back to 2009-10.” More from The Chronicle.
