Syracuse Chancellor Kent Syverud updates his campus on the acute moving parts of college athletics: “We are facing right now the settlement of a massive antitrust case. One aspect of it is to create the probability that schools in the major conferences will be paying directly $20 million a year to student athletes, mostly to football players. I think it’s important for Syracuse to be competitive, but it’s important also to understand the budget implications of that, and the values implication of that. I’ve been trying to get groups to focus on this early and often. We’ve worked through it with the Board of Trustees recently. Faculty Athletic Representative Mary Graham has convened two meetings with stakeholders this week, including faculty, student-athletes, student leaders, and leadership from around the University, including especially the co-chairs of the Senate Athletic Policy Committee. I think the next step, learning from some of our experiences recently, is working through the Senate Athletic Policy Committee to focus on it promptly this year in the Senate and to figure out what other stakeholder groups need to be briefed and discuss the implications of it. We made some progress on that this week. It’s not a thing that we can spend two years debating because, unfortunately, the landscape might be quite dramatically changed before we can reach a universal consensus in two years. But if the Senate wants to play a meaningful role in this, I need the Senate Athletic Policy Committee to be moving on it fairly soon, reporting on it and information sessions, including for senators who are interested. I need that as well, for student-athletes, for student leaders, and, believe me, there’s plenty of alumni very interested in this as well. We have a long way to go before this is all going to settle down. Like everything else, it could be affected by the elections. I’m just saying this because if shared governance is going to mean something in this area, we actually have to do the work in this area, and we have to do it soon.” More. (link)

Alabama AD Greg Byrne was a guest on the Paul Finebaum Show yesterday & touched upon a number of items, including his media exposure to Football’s two losses: “In all sincerity, Paul, I haven't read anything. I told Regina I was going to read two articles a week. When we win, I'm going to read two articles a week. When we don't win, I'm going to read two articles a week. Trying to be consistent. Have I seen a couple of headlines in that process? Yeah, and you don't want to have your head completely buried, but what you do is control the controllables.” More: “The standard is really high, absolutely. That's what makes the place so special, right? And how much people care and how much our fans have passion and how great they are. You don't take that for granted. At the same time, too — when coach Saban retired, I remember just thinking, ‘I'm sure there's a lot of people paying attention, but we were going to control what we could control.’ That was really important. So going back to what I said earlier, my focus was on the team, supporting our kids, who have been so good, not taking the easy button, knowing that this is a special place, that we're going to be resilient, and the leadership and the steps coach DeBoer and his staff have taken by coming here and being part of this great university. That's not going to change.” (link)

Michigan has launched a $400M fundraising effort - Look to Michigan - that’s billed as a multi-year campaign with a focus on “supporting the athletics master facilities plan, scholarship support and student-athlete enrichment.” Wolverines AD Warde Manuel: “Our mission at Michigan Athletics is to foster a culture of excellence by committing to championship standards in everything we do and everyone we serve. The efforts behind this campaign will ensure we continue fulfilling that mission for years to come." (link)

The Athletic’s Matt Baker reports “If you've been concerned that the Florida State/ACC/Clemson lawsuits are moving too fast, then I bring good news! The ACC has asked for 180 days of discovery before a Tallahassee court considers FSU's motion for partial summary judgment. We can *finally* catch our breath at last. (Nothing else interesting in the latest court records I've seen) I guess I should be clear here: This doesn’t seem like the ACC is trying to delay this all until after a specific date. The argument is that they need time to do discovery to get the information necessary for its defenses. Also, it hasn’t been granted (that I’ve seen) and might not be. Anyway, enjoy your Friday.” (link)

The South Carolina Board of Trustees has approved the RFP process to retain an architecture firm to design the initial phase of enhancements to Williams-Brice Stadium. The approval comes after a year-long process of consultation and input with Nations Group and resulting analysis by Elevate. Tennessee Men’s Basketball HC Rick Barnes addressed the Knoxville Quarterback Club this week and touched on NIL and how much he knows about the deals his players get: “People don’t really realize that the NIL has been around for a long, long time. People don’t realize it stands for ‘Now it’s legal.’ But my assistant (coaches), the agent talks to the collective and they talk about it. We obviously will have to know what it would be because we’ve got to go build a roster. And we’ve worked really hard. We’ve got a great staff, we’ve got some incredible support people on our staff that has really tried to take the NBA model in terms of how they look at it, how they break it down. And their deal is they know they’re going to have to pay three people, maybe four, but certainly three, a pretty good chunk of money. And then what’s the best value they can get for everything else? That’s what they got to (do), because those to me are the real big decisions. Because you got to, that’s where you really, you don’t want to miss. But it’s part of the equation now we have to deal with it. But we know we have to build a roster and manage a roster. I always talk about roster building, but now it’s more management of it. And with that said, we can’t get away from our core values who we’re about. We tell every recruit that we talk to that we don’t want to be about the money. We want you to want to come to Tennessee for all the right reasons. And then we get to that part (money), we can talk about it. But we want you to want to be here for what we talked about, how we recruit you. And that’s got to work first or the other part won’t work.” (link)

USA Today’s Matt Hayes profiles Boise State star RB Ashton Jeanty, who chose to remain with the Broncos despite receiving more lucrative offers during the offseason. Jeanty: “I told those [schools], ‘You guys overlooked me three years ago. Now you want me?’ It just made me realize I made the right decision all along by coming here.” Now, Hayes notes, Jeanty is chasing Barry Sanders’ “near immortal” single-season rushing record. “Jeanty has 1,248 yards rushing in six games, and is 1,381 yards from breaking Sanders’ single season record of 2,628 yards. Jeanty has a minimum of seven games remaining, including Friday’s critical Mountain West Conference game at UNLV (Jeanty ran for 128 yards).” By the time Broncos HC Spencer Danielson had shed the interim tag, Power 4 schools were circling, and Danielson notes: ”The whole time, Ash kept saying to me, ‘I want to be here.’ I had so many people calling me saying, ‘Hey, Spencer, just a heads up, a bunch of schools are coming for Ash.’ They were just coming and coming, and me and Ash didn’t have one more conversation about it.” Jeanty never entered the portal, nor did any of the other Broncos players being contacted by other programs, and Danielson says he “called quite a few coaches, and told them I knew what they were doing, and it was illegal. Not surprising, it turned into the blame game. ‘Oh, I didn’t know. Let me look into it.’ Well, I’m protective, and we’re not taking this sitting down.” Jeanty adds: “There’s more to life than money. This is my home now. I want to leave a legacy.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger examines how Army West Point and Navy are enjoying undefeated football seasons and are “on a collision course to meet in the American Athletic Conference championship game” despite not being able to offer NIL deals or use the transfer portal. Dellenger notes the winner of an Army-Navy AAC Championship has a “legitimate shot to qualify for the expanded playoff…during a selection process that is scheduled for a day after the conference title games; and then both teams – potentially one heading to the playoff and one not – would meet again on December 14 in the annual Army-Navy game a week before the College Football Playoff begins.” Black Knights AD Mike Buddie: “My common refrain to the American Athletic Conference is, ‘Wouldn’t that be a great problem to have?’ The mathematical odds of Army-Navy being the top two teams were slim and, yet, here we are.” One reason for the success could be precisely because classes tend to stay together for all four years. Army HC Jeff Monken adds: “Our guys play for the United States Military Academy and also play for the 1M men and women who served in the U.S. Army. It’s a sense of responsibility that everyone part of this institution has. When the people of America send the U.S. Army out to do a job in the world, they expect the Army to win. They fight our nation’s wars. That’s what we represent here.” Midshipmen HC Brian Newberry adds: “You sell your school. The NIL for us is on the backend: a degree from the No. 1 public school in the country, a guaranteed job when you graduate and you’re making six figures three years into your service.” Lots more. Nevada Volleyball will not play San José State this weekend pointing to not having enough student-athletes to take the court. As athletic departments prepare themselves for a post-House settlement landscape, Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports some schools have “eliminated roster spots and, for some, scholarship offers that they were once promised. Meanwhile, several dozen current college athletes are being notified that they are no longer part of their teams – some of the notifications arriving after the fall semester even began.” Dellenger indicates the new roster caps will result in “thousands of lost roster spots for mostly walk-on athletes and those on partial scholarship — a consequence that, while previously reported by Yahoo Sports, has now sparked outrage from hundreds of parents of athletes or prospective athletes whose spots have been or will soon be eliminated. Nearly 20,000 parents and athletes are members of a Facebook page related to the issue, and they are mobilizing in what is now a public fight against the new policies, said Tom Wiegand, an attorney with MoloLamken, a national firm based in New York, Washington D.C. and Chicago. The firm is in the process of authoring an objection to the settlement over the roster limits.” Dellenger goes on to report that “at one SEC school, eight track and field runners were cut or pushed out over the summer. One power conference program released all of their 2025 men’s swimming commitments. And in football, it is estimated that more than 1,500 walk-on players — roughly 20-30 per team — will see their spots cut. In all, the 68 power conference schools are expected to eliminate at least 3,000 roster positions as administrators work to adhere to new roster limitations, reallocate resources from lower-tier to revenue-generating sports, and balance men and women opportunities to comply with the federal Title IX law.” College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America Executive Director Samantha Barany: “Someone might say we are taking better care of our student-athletes with the settlement. I’d say we are taking better care of a percentage of our student-athletes.” Lots more. (link)

College Football Realignment publisher Bill Farley pens a guest post for Extra Points reports from this week’s Idaho Board of Education meeting, which included remarks from Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey, Idaho AD Terry Gawlick and Idaho State AD Pauline Thiros. Idaho State does not plan to cut any athletic programs, but Thiros expressed hope that pressure could be brought to bear on the NCAA to make the Power 4 schools take a greater share of the back pay settlement. Thiros, who says the Bengals are seriously considering opting into the House settlement, also noted the department is starting to negotiate cost reductions with vendors at Idaho State and will explore new revenue opportunities made available by the NCAA. Dickey remarked that Idaho schools are holding a “golden ticket” because they’re located in a state without pro sports teams. Per Farley, Dickey “sees the House settlement as an opportunity, but one that is still not clearly defined. Nevertheless, Boise State plans to opt in and is creating Bronco Pro as a subsidiary of the athletic department. Bronco Pro will merge with the current collective and share revenue with athletes. He acknowledged it was difficult “building a plane while flying it,” but the timeline of the House Settlement (approval in April 2025 and implementation in July 2025) leaves no room to wait for complete clarity.” Gawlick voiced concerns that roster limits may require the Vandals to cut some student-athletes to meet those limits, and in turn, upset Title IX compliance. She is not exploring any new revenue sources, but rather is focused on helping athletes access NIL opportunities in the local Moscow community. More. (link)

Grand Canyon has an offer to join the Mountain West, JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher reports, adding that Lopes AD Jamie Boggs and GCU President Brian Mueller were both no-shows for the WCC’s executive cabinet meeting this week. Their absence “caused a stir in the room…while the conference ADs absorbed the impact and discussed what might come next.” One AD compared the situation to a kid ghosting another kid in middle school: “If a girl doesn’t reply, it’s obvious she wants to break up with you.” According to Canzano, “the framework for the Mountain West’s offer to GCU includes a $3.5M entry fee that would be paid to the conference, per a source. The Antelopes would receive a guaranteed $1.5M in media-rights distributions over the next six years. GCU is paying a $16M entry fee to enter the WCC next summer.” The question, then, is whether the Lopes defect to the Mountain West or renegotiate with the WCC. It would owe the league a $1M buyout were it to leave. Canzano: “The prevailing thought when GCU agreed to join the WCC last May was that the school wouldn’t stay very long. Nobody expected it could be a matter of months, however. Several sources told me that GCU ultimately wants to be in the new-world Pac-12. The Pac-12 has not extended an offer to the Antelopes and appears focused on its media rights negotiations and the addition of one more ‘all sports’ school.” (link)

The Minnesota-affiliated Dinkytown Athletes has received a $1M commitment from Twin Cities business man Mark Pearson & his financial services firm Nepsis. Pearson: “We believe, with the concept of mentoring with clarity, we can help bring greater clarity, understanding and guiding players and guiding our clients, in general. To help them make the best decisions to maximize their returns, minimize their taxes and take advantage of financial opportunities.” (link); The Gophers are also dipping their toe into the “cap management” personnel space with the listing for a new “House Settlement Negotiator,” per Sportico’s Daniel Libit. Of note: “The school says it is prioritizing applicants with experience in managing a professional sports team’s salary cap. [...] Travis Cameron, U of M’s associate AD/chief revenue officer, suggested in a phone interview that the job posting was more of a trial balloon than dead-set commitment to how exactly the department will proceed. It remains unresolved, for example, to what extent the work of paying players will be done internally or farmed out to outside companies.” More from Cameron: “Everyone is sitting with their hand on the same button. We are all having the same conversations. Everybody wants to figure out what’s best, because there is a lot of opportunity to change the trajectory of your program if you do it right.” (link)

Fresno State is on pace to beat last year’s football ticket revenue of $5.3M. So far, the Bulldogs are averaging 40,380 fans per home game, up from 39,067 last season, and the Bulldogs have a chance to lead all Group of Five conference programs in attendance for a second year in a row. Senior Assoc. AD for External Relations Frank Pucher: “We’ve left no stone unturned in our efforts to make home football games the can’t miss events in the Valley each fall. We’ve utilized new technologies and a content-driven approach to engage fans, and prospective fans, across all segments and demographics of our community and this passionate Red Wave has responded incredibly well.” With an upcoming move to the Pac-12, Bulldogs AD Garrett Klassy is confident the department can increase its budget. “We’re aware of that. I was hired here for my background in revenue generation and I think we have a distinct advantage here. We can press on some new revenue opportunities. I’ve told everybody this. This is the start of the journey. We’re not sitting around celebrating that we made the Pac-12. We have to understand we’re at the bottom of the mountain. We have to keep climbing to the top. I think because of the people in the valley and the coaches we’ve had here, we have covered up a lot of our deficiencies for a long time, primarily facilities. We’re going to work really hard to create new revenue streams and create a championship experience for our student athletes.” (link)

St. John’s Men’s Basketball HC Rick Pitino suggests creating a super league of hoops teams to counteract the league’s lack of football. "I don't have a say in that at all. If I was to, I'd want something to combat football. Whether it's 18 teams, 20 teams, super league, something needs to combat football because it's just taken over our whole landscape. … Are we good enough with just 11 [teams] to protect ourselves? I'm not sure. … I'm not a big believer in worrying about money. I think that most businesses that become super successful don't, whether it's Uber or Amazon or whoever. Maybe they don't make money at the beginning, they go through five to six, seven-year periods where you'd lose a lot of money and then they'd become mega companies. So I would not be concerned about sharing revenue rights and things like that. I would just say, 'Look 10 years down the road where you want to be.'" As for how he suggests the league should expand, Pitino emphasizes the importance of regionality and suggests Dayton would be a fit. “I would not go to the West Coast. I heard about Gonzaga. I thought that was foolish, to be honest with you. I think it's foolish for UCLA to go to play Penn State. I think it's too long a trip, but that's what football will do for you.” (link)

South Carolina will rename its Baseball stadium Ray Tanner Field at Founders Park after a $2.5M donation from a group of Gamecock supporters. USC AD Ray Tanner: “The accomplishments that I have been a part of at the University of South Carolina is due to the wonderful support of our University administration, Gamecock student-athletes, coaches, staff and fans. This is a tremendous gesture from my friends and donors. I am grateful for their commitment to this project.
