As Penn State prepares to face off against Ohio State this weekend, Nittany Lions AD Pat Kraft acknowledges the fans are hungry to take the next step in football. “I get it. We all sign up for it. We all come to Penn State to win national championships. I know (James Franklin) doesn’t run away from it. I sure don’t. It’s why I came here and why we’re investing. You don’t come to Penn State to be mediocre. Michigan won the national championship last year. Ohio State has been in that mix. I think it’s our time.” While the Nittany Lions have not beaten Michigan or Ohio State since 2020, they are undefeated against the rest of the league during that period, and Kraft points out the school’s NIL efforts have come a long way over the past few years. “We were literally nowhere [with NIL] when I got here. I think we’re in a really good position now. I think that’s where Ohio State and people we compete with had a leg up. They did good things and were aggressive early. We are at the point now where we know we can go toe to toe with them.” (link)

In anticipation of changes related to the House settlement, Arkansas has been “working for months to identify opportunities to reduce operating expenses, maximize revenue and supplement the generous support provided by those who have invested in our program,” according to Razorbacks AD Hunter Yurachek. One undertaking involves a comprehensive budget review to “explore new sources of revenue support as well as identify ways to operate more efficiently. … The goal of the review is to identify a net positive change of $15M in combined savings and increased revenues annually. We must continue to maximize additional revenue opportunities while also being dutiful stewards of the resources which we have been afforded.” The Razorbacks have been able to utilize new rules permitting logos on playing surfaces by partnering with Tyson Foods and Walmart to add their logos to both the field at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium and Nolan Richardson Court at Bud Walton Arena. Also from Yurachek: “Beginning this weekend, when fans purchase concessions and other items at Razorback sporting events, each transaction will include a 3% fee that will be designated to the funding of the additional scholarships that will be implemented with final approval of the settlement.” Furthermore, to enhance Annual Fund revenue, the department will implement a “comprehensive reset on ALL seating within Bud Walton Arena in time for the 2025-26 men’s basketball season.” More. North Carolina next month will begin selling beer and wine at the Smith Center for men’s and women’s basketball games and Olympic sports events at Carmichael Arena. Tar Heels AD Bubba Cunningham: "Many of our fans have asked for us to expand alcohol sales to our indoor events, and after five years, we think the time is right. Not only is it consistent with many other events around the country, including NCAA championships and ACC tournaments, but it also adds a key financial stream as we prepare for revenue-sharing with student-athletes." Boise State has received a $25M estate gift from longtime benefactors Allen and Billie Dee Noble. This gift – the largest one-time pledge in Broncos history – will support the football program, and Broncos AD Jeramiah Dickey notes: "We are extremely grateful to Allen and Billie Dee for this extraordinary gift. We choose to believe in epic at Boise State, and this transformational gift represents the belief Allen and Billie Dee had in us and Bronco Nation.” (link)

The Big 12 has released a statement regarding concerns about the integrity of helmet communications: “Following the industry-wide concerns surrounding helmet communications, the Big 12 conducted a review of conference games and helmet communications processes to address any issues member institutions raised regarding this matter. The review showed that at no point was any Big 12 competition compromised. All Big 12 helmet communications programs now have the encryption update from GSC, and schools may use either CoachComm or GSC for coach-to-player communication at their discretion.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown examines just how good Hawaii’s athletic department can be and acknowledges the multitude of complications that arise from the state’s geography but adds the location may also provide opportunities. For instance, it is much closer to major international cities like Tokyo, Sydney and Seoul. “And that’s important, because Hawaii, and by extension, the university itself, is full of connections to many Asian countries. Roughly 16% of the entire state of Hawaii claims Japanese ancestry, while another 4% claims ties to South Korea. More than a third of the University of Hawaii’s student body identifies as ‘Asian,’ more than any other reported sub-group. This is not something I really thought about until I spoke to multiple coaches and administrators at the school, but many Hawaii staffers believe there’s plenty of untapped potential in trying to become the Pacific Rim’s Big Time College Team. … Given the state’s demographics and history, Hawaii is probably better equipped to build deep relationships in Asia than virtually anybody else in FBS...certainly better than anybody outside the P4.” Ultimately, Brown believes the department’s future will be shaped by how much money it can raise. “You don’t have to be the high bid to convince the right people to come play in paradise. You just need to be able to offer enough to pay for rent, shaved ice and the occasional bright blue beverage with fruit sticking out of it. That is a tall order. But I don’t think it’s an impossible one.” (link)

VCU officially broke ground on the 42-acre Athletic Village project on Wednesday. The first phase of construction includes a $37M track and field stadium. As reported earlier this week, construction of the village will span four phases, and, when complete, will include an 18-court indoor/outdoor tennis facility, a 4,000-seat soccer stadium, aforementioned track and field complex, and a 20K-sq-ft multipurpose training center. The $37M stadium is being funded by the sale of Sports Backers Stadium to the city’s Economic Development Authority ($25M) and private and corporate fundraising ($12M). Rams AD Ed McLaughlin: “It feels like I’ve been working on this project most of my professional life. Now the fun part begins. [...] It’ll be incredible for our student athletes. We need facilities that match what our aspirations are.” (link)

The Sun Belt is changing the format of its men’s and women’s basketball tournament brackets, effective this season. While the league will continue to take all 14 members to both championships and will maintain its seven-day tournament format, rest days will be eliminated from the postseason events. “In an effort to prioritize the value of the 18-game conference regular-season, the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds will now receive byes to the tournament semifinals. The No. 3 and No. 4 seeds will maintain byes to the tournament quarterfinals, which had previously been given to the top four seeds. With the elimination of rest days, higher-seeded teams will no longer face a lower-seeded team coming off a rest day.” Commissioner Keith Gill: “The new Sun Belt Basketball Championship brackets will reward our top seeds for their accomplishments during the regular season, ensuring they receive the advantage they’ve earned for their on-court performance.” (link)

The Athletic’s Matt Baker outlines defendants’ arguments in Georgia QB Jaden Rashada’s lawsuit against Florida Football HC Billy Napier, former Director of Player Engagement and NIL Marcus Castro-Walker and prominent UF supporter Hugh Hathcock. Castro-Walker contends the “only possible interpretation is that Jaden got greedy and voluntarily turned down guaranteed money in order to take whatever was behind Door #2. In today’s version of Let’s Make a (NIL) Deal, just as in the original television show, the contestant has no legal recourse when their own decision results in them ultimately leaving with only a Billy goat or a block of cheese. … The simple truth is that overly-optimistic ‘promises’ are made every day in college football recruiting. … Opening the doors of the federal courthouse to every college football player seeking injunctive relief or specific performance of an ‘oral contract’ when their dream doesn’t materialize would only lead to a class of plaintiffs larger than any mass tort action on record.” Napier’s motion asserts he did nothing wrong and that Rashada had agents and plenty of bargaining power as a prized recruit. Napier has stayed quiet publicly other than to say he felt “comfortable” with his actions. While neither UF nor the athletic department are named defendants, Baker observes: “The fact that one current employee (Napier) and one former one (Castro-Walker) are included raises another issue: Will they be protected by sovereign immunity, which helps shield state entities and employees during official actions?” (link)

Georgia Southern makes official its promotion of COO Chris Davis to AD. President Kyle Marrero: "Chris is a proven leader who has been instrumental in our success over the past four and a half years. He is highly respected by our coaches, student-athletes, university leadership, and across the national athletic landscape, having served in leadership positions at multiple top-level institutions. I am confident and enthusiastic about the future of Georgia Southern Athletics with Chris at the helm." Davis: “I understand the passion and culture of Eagle Nation and I also know that we're in a great place today thanks to Jared and his leadership. I look forward to a smooth transition with our student-athletes, coaches, staff, donors and fans as we continue to soar to great heights.” (link)

One longtime university president expresses concern to JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher about the increasing power the SEC and Big Ten wield in football: “There are no checks and balances. The fear of ‘being left out’ drove everyone else to concede any sort of real voice and/or decision-making. The presidents also conceded leadership to the commissioners. Combine it all, and the Big Ten and SEC are at the top and have no reason to let anyone else share that space. … The only way to break the stranglehold is for someone outside of those two conferences to win the national championship and to consistently compete for the very best athletes. With the expansions of Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC and Oregon and USC to the Big Ten, those conferences effectively acquired anyone with the resources to compete nationally and consistently.” Meanwhile, Washington State Football HC Jake Dickert tells Canzano: “We need to go to a 28-team playoff. The kids have proven they only want to play in the playoffs, so why not? Let’s give the people what they want. There are no conference champions. The conferences are so big. So let’s open it up and have a real playoff like Division II and Division III. They find a way to do 28 teams. That would create a lot of excitement.” Dickert would like to see college football move the start of the season to mid-August, do away with conference championship games, and start that 28-team playoff a week after the end of the season. He adds: “These kids want to play in meaningful games. The bowl system has had its turn. It’s time to evolve into a bigger playoff system. It took us so long to get a two-team playoff, then a four-team playoff, and now we’re at 12. It will get there.” (link)

Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt says he raised the issue regarding helmet communications with the Big 12 upon learning the Red Raiders’ communications were unencrypted and accessible to anyone with a scanner and knowledge of how to locate the frequencies. Texas Tech has requested a report from the Big 12 on its recent games against TCU and Baylor, and the conference has obliged. Hocutt: “We've got to have a game whose integrity is not questionable in any way on a Saturday afternoon. We owe it to the 120 young men on our football team to ensure that happens, that it's a game of fair competition and the same set of rules are enforced." ESPN’s Max Olson notes that “no schools have made specific allegations that an opponent may have accessed their in-game frequencies, and several Big 12 and Power 4 coaches and staffers have questioned whether a competitive advantage could be gained if that did occur.” One Big 12 chief of staff argues there is “no real advantage. One, you're speaking a different language. Two, if you think you'd be able to enact in real time what they say and try to do it on the field, you're delusional. You're just being your stereotypical paranoid football coach. You can't relay it to the kids fast enough." (link); Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports the “SEC sent a memo today alerting schools that they could, if they wanted, send their equipment to the helmet comms company’s headquarters in Atlanta to get them affixed with a firmware patch. League has reported no significant security issues with the equipment from coaches.” (link)

College Hockey Insider’s Mike McMahon unpacks the CHL proposal which will be voted on by the DI Council next week and notes the intent is to “eliminate legislation by which major junior ice hockey teams are considered professional…and to permit involvement with professional teams and leagues” before enrollment so long as they receive nothing more than “actual and necessary expenses.” McMahon explains the NHL can assign players on entry-level contracts back to their CHL teams without impacting their contract. NHL teams have until the ninth game of the regular season to make that decision. Currently, players who aren’t 20 years old can’t play in the AHL. Part of the NHL-CHL agreement is that the NHL team must assign those players back to the CHL if they don’t make the NHL roster. However, those players are still under NHL contract and have received compensation “more than actual and necessary expenses for participation,” therefore, they will not be NCAA eligible. Only CHL players who have not signed NHL contracts will maintain eligibility. … On a related note, sources say that the NHL and NHLPA have already drafted some changes to the collective bargaining agreement in anticipation of the rule change.” McMahon also notes the proposal appears to allow college players to legally attend NHL training camps as long as they are not compensated above the cost of participating and are not allowed to participate in exhibition games. “Now, that might be allowed, but it will also be difficult for players to participate. NHL training camps are usually mid-late September, in the middle of college classes.” More. (link)

The New York Times’ Derek M. Norman observes that “college football is transforming college towns into destinations in their own right, as travelers build trips around dropping in to catch a game. United Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Southwest Airlines have added flights specifically for game-day weekends, while demand for local hotels and short-term rentals surges. Last summer, roughly 25K U.S. fans even made their way to the Aviva Stadium in Dublin to attend the Aer Lingus College Football Classic and watch the sold-out game between Georgia Tech and Florida State.” On Location EVP John Anthony adds that the company has seen 45% growth for regular season games this year, calling it “a pretty amazing bump,” and adding: “There’s just a greater interest in people overall going to these things.” Norman identifies Ann Arbor, Austin, Boulder, Norman, South Bend and Tuscaloosa as six particularly interesting college towns to visit. Louisville professors Meg Hancock and Nick Kopka and Temple professor Ehren Green have published The Pipeline Project, a study on the state of women in intercollegiate athletic administration. The report extends the “pipeline” beyond Asst. ADs and Assoc. ADs to “look at all job areas and four managerial tiers (i.e.g, entry-level, mid-tier I, mid-tier II, executive; see page 6 for definitions) as the representation of women throughout athletic departments is critical to understand how the pipeline flows and contributes to representation.” This inaugural report focuses on data for all Power 4 and Group of 5 institutions and produced several key findings, including: Women comprise 38% of employees in FBS intercollegiate athletic departments; 44% of entry-level positions in intercollegiate athletics are held by women, suggesting initial accessibility to the field; women represent more than 50% of entry-level employees in three Group of 5 conferences (Sun Belt, MAC, AAC); while women appear to move less (or more slowly) from entry-level (44%) to mid-tier II positions (assistant director, facility manager) across FBS, women's proportional representation increases from mid-tier II (32%) to mid-tier I (40%) positions, which include the titles of assistant athletic director or senior director; compliance, NIL and sports medicine have the most equal representation (48-52%) of women across FBS; women represent 64% of employees in student-athlete services; there are more executive level positions in Power 4 (2,268) athletic departments than Group of 5 (867) athletic departments and women are more represented in these positions in Power 4 (34%) when compared to Group of 5 (30%); and women represent 38% of FBS employees, yet there is not a single conference in which women exceed this representation at the executive level. However, women exceed this representation (38% or more) in mid-tier I positions in ALL Power 4 conferences. Full report. (link)

The Toledo Blade’s Dave Briggs speaks with seven MAC basketball coaches who were granted anonymity – along with Ball State HC Michael Lewis who agreed to participate only if his comments were on the record – about several topics heading into the season, including what rule they would change if they could. Answers ranged from playing with “one name-brand basketball” throughout the sport to eliminating the one-time transfer rule. One coach says: “At some point, for the health of our sport, there have to be…contracts, something where student-athletes are committed to a university for more than just nine months, or there's a buyout to that if not. There's got to be a way for there to be continuity with rosters at some level.” Coaches were also asked about the largest sum of money a player from one of their teams has received to transfer, and answers range from $220K to $400K with one coach saying: “When you're hearing these numbers of mid-six figures, I know that to be true.” Ohio and Toledo were most frequently mentioned as the best jobs in the league while Northern Illinois was most frequently mentioned as the most difficult. On how best to raise the league’s profile, Lewis says: “Going all the way back to the football contracts with ESPN, emphasizing football is not a bad idea. But you look at the Missouri Valley [prioritizing basketball] and the difference in that time period in the two leagues, which directions they’ve gone, that speaks volumes.” More. (link)

LSU women’s basketball student-athlete Last-Tear Poa has filed a lawsuit against U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services after her P-1A Athlete application was denied. Poa, who is a native of Australia and is represented by notable immigration attorneys Ksenia Maiorova and Amy Maldonado, claims she has been forced to turn down NIL opportunities despite having more than 200K social media followers. On3’s Pete Nakos reports her application was denied on the grounds that her future events are not internationally recognized. As noted in previous cases, students in the country on F-1 student visas are barred from participating in employment. D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers says the Big Ten fully funding its baseball rosters is “not happening,” adding: “I would be surprised if the Big Ten goes much over 11.7 to start. The league will be forced to get more aggressive as time moves on.” Rogers goes on to posit that the “SEC will not be more than 25 from what I'm hearing. With that said, with some of the in-state/border aid type of items, many teams in the league will be able to get to 34 in all likelihood.” (link, link)

Adidas’ currency-neutral revenue grew by double digits in most places – except North America, where dwindling sales of Yeezy sneakers are still weighing on the region. Group operating profit jumped to €598M ($646M), from €409M in the same period last year. Overall, Q3 currency-neutral sales were up 9% in Greater China and down 7% in North America. (link); Front Office Sports’ Margaret Fleming and Lisa Scherzer report that Adidas reached an out-of-court settlement with rapper Ye that officially ends their partnership. Adidas CEO Bjørn Gulden: “There [aren’t] any more open issues, and there is no…money going either way, and we both move on. There were tensions on many issues, and…when you put the claims on the right side and you put the claims on the left side, both parties said we don’t need to fight anymore and withdrew all the claims.” Overall Q3 revenues grew 7% YoY to roughly $7B.
