Juniata President Jim Troha has been re-elected as chair of the DIII Presidents Council through the 2027 NCAA Convention. The council supported legislative proposals to reduce the minimum multisport conference membership requirement from seven to six and create a primary representative spot on SAAC for each multisport conference. The Washington Post’s Jesse Dougherty talks with NCAA President Charlie Baker about the “impossible job” of protecting tradition and modernizing college sports, and Baker says: “While I certainly feel the weight of trying to get to the other side of all that’s going on now, the proverbial pearl is worth the dive. I mean, this stuff is important aside from what people see on a Saturday afternoon.” Dougherty observes that Baker was “hired, at least in part, to figure out Congress for the NCAA and hasn’t so far.” To that point, Baker remarks: “When you get to a certain age…you learn to understand that progress is progress, right? And it’s okay if you don’t get everything you look for as long as you’re moving in the right direction, and I certainly believe that if we can make this [House settlement] work, it makes it much easier to have a conversation about employment with Congress.” Meanwhile, former LEAD1 CEO Tom McMillen tells Dougherty: “A lot of this is going to depend on the winds of the election. Really, Charlie’s legacy, at least his near-term legacy, might have a lot to do with whether Republicans get a windfall in Congress, which could lead to something getting done. If the Democrats win, it’s a different compromise. But his ability to work legislatures will be more important next time around than ever before.” (link)

The changes began in her first month, tied to the institution’s ongoing HR review process. Asked about championing others the way she was championed, within the context of those changes: “If you don’t do it every day, then you’re doing a disservice to your team. Someone did it for me and I want to make sure I do it for other people and so when I look at my department now, we did a 180. We have women serving in positions. We have people of color serving in higher positions administratively or head coaching positions that wasn't either the norm and or it wasn't talked about enough in our spaces. So I asked the question to my team, ‘Who were we missing at the table? What policies do we need to change, especially when it comes to hiring? And why are we asking the question?’ If we have a melting pot of students coming to our campuses why doesn't our department represent the students that we serve?” Further on some of the changes: “We have to leave with a customer service mindset and that's something we also changed in the interview process. What are some ways that you can be better recruiters, not just of the student-athletes, but their families and we weren't talking a lot about that in our interview processes. […] I'm not afraid to ask the hard questions. I'm not afraid to keep people accountable […] Once we started holding people accountable, now I can start hiring people that I know are going to lead with Integrity, that are going to lead with intention and love and that was it. That there is no secret sauce. I just know for me, I was held accountable no matter what level I served on and I expect my coaches and admin to do the same thing.” Full conversation available on BOSCA. (link)

The ABCA and AVCA, along with the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America, Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association, Intercollegiate Tennis Association, National Field Hockey Coaches Association, U.S. Track & Field And Cross Country Coaches Association and National Wrestling Coaches Association retained FGS Global earlier this month to lobby on federal NIL legislation “that protects Olympic sports programs and broad-based sports sponsorship,” according to Politico’s Caitlin Oprysko, who points out that “one of the Olympic sport associations’ new lobbyists at FGS, Colleen Bell, is a former legislative director for Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), one of the Democrats leading those discussions on the Hill.” Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich adds that FGS Global is “part of that NCAA/power conference effort, however, as a longtime lobbyist for the Big Ten. The firm worked for the Big Ten as recently as this past quarter, according to lobbying disclosures, but it’s unclear whether that relationship will continue or be seen as a conflict of interest given its new clients. FGS Global did not immediately respond to a request for comment.” FGS Global said in disclosure forms that it was hired to develop “a federal solution that protects Olympic sports programs and broad-based sports sponsorship.” (link, link)
