Lots more context from Missouri AD Laird Veatch on how Mizzou is planning to tackle the House settlement & other industry challenges: “A lot of it is going to, but we also need to find ways to be smarter with our money. And we're going to look for every opportunity to reallocate expenses. I'm not saying we're going to reduce expenses when we're facing all this, but we are going to take expenses that we're spending in one area and look at ‘is it going to help us win and be successful,’ right? And really be thoughtful about that, and look for other ways to turn more revenue. So we're going to do all that, but we also have to sort of modernize some of the things that we that we do from a fundraising and sales standpoint, and that's what we're trying to create awareness of where we're headed for, where we're at, so that when, you know, when we roll out and share some of these adjustments here later in the year, call it in December, that our folks kind of know some of the why behind it. [...] It's going to be a combination of both (raising ticket prices & donation levels). And we got to figure out that right mix, right? [...] We're going to still have, you know, price points and access for people that can't afford the 50 yard line seat. So it's going to be distributed across a big array. There are going to be significant increases, but you really can't articulate that till it gets down to that individual rollout, and we share that with them directly. We'll get there, and it's going to be significant. It's not going to be a minor increase. It's going to have to be for us to start to right size and get back to where we need to be to be competitive. [...] You hear things like concerts and other things that are happening more and more at other schools, we're going to have start to push in those directions as well, and we're also going to have to look to cut expenses and reallocate our spending in ways that are smarter and that more directly impact our success.. So there are shifts going to happen in our world, and whether that is how we operate, how we travel, staffing, there's all kinds of different things to think about. [...] I will tell you, I have been very clear with everybody in the department working with University leadership, (cutting sports) is like an absolute last resort. The last thing on earth we want to do, and we are not considering that. That's not part of our equation." (link, link)

The latest from Purdue AD Mike Bobinski on the challenges ahead: “(In some ways) You’ve got the two little guys sitting on your shoulder saying, ‘Hey, hurry up and do this.’ And the other one says, ‘Hey, hold on a second here. Let’s not, let’s not just jump from left to right and, you know, make wholesale, quick, quick trigger type of changes.’ I look at other programs that we have and men’s basketball is a tremendous example of continuity, consistency, a long sort of a slow burn of a build, and then you get to a tremendous place of success that’s then sustainable. Every sport is different. I get that. But I think there are multiple ways to do this, and I don’t think you should get blinded by the realities of this current environment and really these last two years. [...] I think your point about that (academics) being a competitive advantage for us is something that we need to emphasize even more as we move forward. As the recruiting resource world levels out here (as a result of the House Settlement in 2025-26), assuming things hold together, you are able to really focus on those other elements that you bring to the table for us.” (link)

NCAA Director of Inclusion Gretchen Miron joins Connect’s Stephanie Garcia Cichosz for a discussion about emerging sports, what’s gaining traction, and what sports are trending to gain approval to be added as the next NCAA women’s sport. Miron says women’s wrestling in particular has a lot of momentum and has “grown exponentially at the youth level. They are sanctioned as a high school sport for girls in 47 states and they have over 90 schools competing this year. They’ve just been growing rapidly and providing new opportunities to a really diverse set of student-athletes – people that maybe would not have gone to college but for this opportunity. Miron also notes acrobatics and tumbling, STUNT and triathlon “are all getting closer, which is super exciting and then we do still continue to see great momentum with women's rugby. Obviously, the bronze medal at the Olympics was a huge part of that. And then equestrian has some really storied programs that continue to provide great opportunities to those student-athletes.” Miron also points out that four of those six sports are Olympic and Paralympic sports. According to the report of the NCAA Division I Council’s October meeting notes: “The council adopted Proposal No. 2024-51, which specifies that an active Division II member institution is eligible to compete in the Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship if no men’s ice hockey championship is conducted in Division II. With the adoption of the proposal, the opportunity for Division II institutions to participate in the Division I championship in other sports in which Division II does not offer a championship was eliminated. The proposal is effective August 1, 2025.” (link)

Hawaii’s football team is chartering all but one leg of its five road games this season. Rainbow Warriors’ AD Craig Angelos: “Every FBS team in the country charters. When I came here and saw we only chartered to Vanderbilt and everything else was a commercial flight with regular passengers on there, I thought: ‘is there a better way to do it?’ We’re going there way early and also staying overnight after the game.” Angelos had the business office run a cost analysis of traveling commercial, arriving early and staying overnight for last year’s schedule vs chartering to this year’s schedule and found that chartering allowed for a $70K smaller hit on the budget. Hawaiian Airlines offered a $150K rate round trip. (link)

Desser Sports Media Inc. President Ed Desser and Kosner Media President John Kosner publish a guide for sports rights owners seeking media partners in 2025 and explain that “to maximize potential audiences, once again look to broadcast networks (as the NBA just did by adding NBC), and/or streamers such as (176M+ U.S. subs) Amazon Prime (another recent NBA deal), or (70M+ U.S. subs) Netflix (NFL Christmas Day). No cable network by itself, including ESPN, can reach that potential audience size anymore. As they harness their unique and impressive promotional arsenals, Prime Video and Netflix may soon exceed the audience delivery of broadcast networks. … However, the biggest broadcasters and streamers remain focused primarily on the major leagues, which are now spread across more, smaller packages, while paradoxically, the key techs want to own something.” To reach younger audiences, “you must start with entertainment networks (formerly known as social media), YouTube and perhaps Twitch, and consider Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Snap and X for clips. These are strictly ad sales/revenue-share opportunities. So too are the growing, free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) channels Tubi, Pluto TV and Roku Channel.” Overall, they note that “execution in this age of video content abundance is a lot tougher…but this new era allows the most aggressive, creative and able to use emerging technologies to supercharge growth. Lamenting that your media partner does not understand your product or fans never worked, much less now. Recently we’ve seen expanded — and deserved — interest in NCAA women’s basketball, the WNBA and the NWSL, among others.” More. (link)

Klutch Sports Founder/CEO Rich Paul talks about the growing impact of women’s sports: “I think that from a marketing perspective, brands are starting to lean [in] more. I know that for a fact actually, and our marketing numbers, in terms of dollars made this year – LeBron excluded – was led by two women, which was actually pretty cool. We had these marketing meetings biweekly and the numbers rolling in – we were led by A’ja [Wilson] and [USC women’s basketball student-athlete] Juju [Watkins]. One is an NIL. And the deal I did for Juju is the largest footwear deal on the men’s or women’s side since probably Zion [Williamson].” (link)

The American Enterprise Institute has ranked more than 400 current and former college presidents who served between 2000–01 and 2022–23 on how well they improved access, affordability, and student success over the course of their presidency. The rankings reveal that some presidents were “superstars” at improving access, affordability and student success. These presidents cut tuition costs, expanded access to low-income and racially underrepresented student groups, and increased graduation rates. But some presidents performed poorly in these areas, with a handful overseeing steep declines in graduation rates, affordability, and access. According to the AEI’s Cody Christensen, the “wide spread across the rankings suggests that higher education boards should begin using performance metrics to hold college presidents accountable for the changes in the outcomes of their students.” The report also found that 20.1% of all current presidents are female, 79.9% of all current presidents are white, 9.7% are black, 2.2% are Hispanic, 8.2% are Asian and the average length of tenure is 7.6 years. For all presidents during the course of the study, the average tenure was 7.95 years. Christensen: “The goal of these rankings is to provide high-level, publicly available information that highlights the best leaders, similar to how public information about private companies (such as stock prices, quarterly revenues, and growth projections) is used to judge the best leaders of private companies. The rankings also reveal which college presidents are consistently low performers, helping oversight organizations keep institutional leaders accountable.” Full study and rankings, which for DI leaders is topped by San Diego President James Harris. @1QLeadership Question: Does the adjustment from making decisions to giving suggestions have to be difficult?
Kim Record, Sr. Associate Commissioner & Chief of Staff at the Atlantic 10 (A10) Conference, talks about her adjustment to working with longtime A10 Commissioner, Bernadette McGlade. Record talks about times when challenging conversations are necessary for the team to be effective.

UIC selects Utah Jazz Chief Experience Officer Andrea Williams as its new AD. Williams previously served as COO of the CFP and Commissioner of the Big Sky. Chancellor Marie Lynn Miranda: "Andrea Williams brings a wealth of experience across collegiate and professional sports and a proven track record of success in managing complex athletic programs, and expanding partnerships with other institutions, conferences and organizations. Her strategic vision for our athletic programs will elevate UIC's national profile for our Division I teams while remaining deeply committed to the academic success and personal growth of our student-athletes." Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger: “The power conferences this week sent to their members the initial cap number for Year 1 of athlete revenue sharing, per a memo obtained by YahooSports. For the 2025-26 sports year (starting July 1), schools are to operate under a *projected* cap of $20.5 million, the memo says. The $20.5 million - lower than what some expected - could increase when final 2024-25 reporting figures are released in the spring. The cap is 22% of P4 revenues in the previous year. The cap has built-in escalators (4% in Year 2 and Year 3 + a re-calculation in Year 4).” (link); Dellenger also points to comments by House attorney Jeffrey Kessler at an event at Fordham indicating Ivy League schools do not plan to share revenue with student-athletes. Seton Hall AD Bryan Felt talks NIL & revenue sharing with NJ Advance Media’s Adam Zagoria. Notably: “Listen, every day is a battle in the NIL world to try to continue to be as great as we can be. I think we’ve made incredible strides, incredible strides, to where we started raising money in year one to where we are now and it continues to get better. And I think we’re seeing that because more and more of our fans, more and more of our supporters are getting comfortable with it. I think it’s so much more of a reality to them. I think there was a lot of resistance from certain folks in the beginning. [...] We’re going to go to revenue sharing which Seton Hall is 110 percent completely into. By the fall of 2025...you’ll be in the middle of revenue sharing. The biggest message to our fans will be they can make their gift to the athletic department like they were always doing and that now essentially is an NIL gift because that’s all going to revenue share which is essentially the same thing. Your gift now to Pirate Blue will be utilized like an NIL gift would have been utilized.” (link)

Oregon State has completed its 2025 Football schedule, which Beavers AD Scott Barnes said cost $3M to add six games, which is $4M less than this year’s agreement with the Mountain West. More: “The Mountain West piece was untenable. [...] …(the 2025 schedule is) more representative of the market than where we were. It’s significant savings. I think we got the quality we needed. [...] It’s funny how much we took for granted when we had nine conference games. You just had to fill the hole with three, and you’re done. This last two years has been exhausting. It’s been really hard. It’ll be great to get back to a base of conference games.” Quick financial review: OSU will pay Tulsa $500K for an away game, $1.2M for Sam Houston to visit Reser Stadium, $500K for a home kick against Lafayette, $750K to host Wake Forest. Former UMBC AD Brian Barrio’s defamation suit against the university has changed venues a second time. Barrio is currently suing in Howard County Circuit Court. UMBC filed a notice of removal in state court and then refiled the case in federal court Thursday, saying in a filing that the U.S. District Court has original jurisdiction over Barrio’s Title IX claims and supplemental jurisdiction over his claims under state law. The defendants — UMBC, the University System of Maryland, and UMBC President Valerie Sheares Ashby — have not directly responded to Barrio’s claims. They are required to respond to the complaint by Nov. 21. (link)

“Play football and stop the feigned injury nonsense.” That’s SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey in a memo distributed to the league’s coaches and administrators on Friday. Sankey adds: “A feigned injury will be found to have occurred unless the national coordinator accepts clear medical information establishing the player had to disrupt the game for an injury timeout and modifies the feigned injury finding in a timely manner.” Teams can submit plays to the league for review who will send them to National Coordinator of Officials Steve Shaw, who will be asked to determine whether or not it is more likely a feigned injury occurred than a legitimate injury. Coaches will be reprimanded and the program will be fined $50K on a first offense. A coach will be reprimanded again for a second offense and the fine will increase to $100K. For a third offense, the head coach will be suspended for the team’s next game, as well as an additional public reprimand. Any staff members found to be directing or encouraging players to fake injuries will be subject to the same punishments. (link)

The newest varsity sport will aim to begin competition in the 2025-26 academic year. Griffs’ AD Bill Maher: “After an extensive conversation with several of our conference peers and the National Acrobatics and Tumbling Association leadership, we believe acrobatics and tumbling is a natural fit to be the next varsity sports program here at Canisius. With the rise of acrobatics and tumbling as an emerging sport for women in the NCAA, this new program will integrate itself seamlessly into the goals of our University by providing fulfilling student experiences and helping drive our enrollment goals. FIFA is paying two land-grant universities – Tennessee and Michigan State – a combined $3.13M to figure out how to grow and maintain perfect pitches for the 2026 World Cup host stadiums and practice sites, per Sportico’s Daniel Libit, who explains the agreement is “structured in such a way that Tennessee is considered the ‘prime recipient’ of the project, while Michigan State is designated as the ‘subrecipient.’ Tennessee is therefore ‘responsible for the performance of MSU.’” With the 2026 World Cup being played in three host countries and 16 cities, the objective of the research is to “homogenize the playing surface conditions as much as possible, by studying the paper species of turf for ‘soccer ball roll, ball bounce and consistency.’” Libit also notes that “beyond deliverables, a significant focus of the research agreement pertains to the allocation of rights to the intellectual property and creative work that would arise from the research. For example, the agreement states that FIFA can pay the University of Tennessee Research Foundation to obtain a ‘worldwide royalty-bearing exclusive license’ that would utilize any of the turf project’s jointly held IP. Accordingly, the research foundation and FIFA would have 12 months to negotiate a ‘commercialization agreement satisfactory to both parties.’ Notably, researchers have already discussed how their findings could benefit other properties, from the NFL to local parks and recreation departments.” (link)
