Clarkson elevates Senior Assoc. AD Kane to succeed AD Smalling in leading the Golden Knights, as Smalling transitions to VP of Operations and Director of Athletics Strategy, effective April 1. President Christensen: “Laurel has been a valued leader in Clarkson’s athletics division for over 20 years, and we are excited for her to take the helm as our new Director of Athletics and Recreation. Medaille will be acquired by Trocaire College, with the institution and Mavericks athletics to continue under the Trocaire name starting this fall. WIVB’s Duke reports the Men’s Tennis and M&W S&D programs will be discontinued after this season, as MU Interim President Quigley stated during yesterday’s State of the University address: “No changes are anticipated. During the next academic year, all fall, winter, and spring sports will continue as usual.” (link, link)

Mammoth continues to beef up its consulting division with the addition of Athletics Staffing and Consulting founder/former Florida Gulf Coast (NCAA DI) AD and GLIAC (NCAA DII) Commissioner McAloose. Mammoth Asst. VP for Project Development: “Carl has incredible vision, and an even better ability to develop a plan to attain that vision.” (link) 

Attorneys of two former student-athletes today filed a federal antitrust lawsuit against the NCAA and the Power 5 conferences seeking retroactive damages for thousands of former athletes based on Alston awards. Specifically, the suit wants to obtain a damages award covering all current and former athletes who competed on a Division I team on or after April 1, 2019 “who would have met the requirements for receiving an Academic Achievement Award under the criteria established by their schools for qualifying for such an Award.” While USA Today’s Berkowitz notes this will likely be used by the NCAA as an illustration of why it needs antitrust protection, plaintiff’s attorneys Kessler and Berman, both of whom have taken on the NCAA in high-profile legal battles, including the Alston case, are unconcerned. Kessler: “I've spoken to many members of Congress about this the last several years. I know Steve has, too. We have yet to find members of Congress who don't worry about the athletes as the victims of the exploitation. They're not really terribly concerned about the NCAA's claim that, somehow, it's the victim. So, I don't think there's any real desire in Congress to grant immunity to the NCAA any more than they would grant immunity to Amazon." (link)

+ Penn State Harrisburg will add Field Hockey as its 17th varsity program, with the new program to begin competition in fall 2024 in the new United East-CSAC merged conference. + SUNY Morrisville will bring back Softball after pressing pause for the 2022-23 academic year and add Women's T&F to its portfolio. AD Grawrock on Softball's return: “While it was a difficult decision to place the program on pause in the fall, we took the time as a department and college administration to reassess and properly position the program for success moving forward. I'm confident that we will be able to offer a quality collegiate experience for our softball student-athletes, and be able to contribute to the opportunities presented at SUNY Morrisville through not only the quality educational programs, but the holistic approach to personal engagement and growth through participation in intercollegiate athletics.” M&W XC HC Powers will lead the upstart T&F program. Brandeis Softball student-athlete Balakrishna pens for the student newspaper, The Justice, taking issue with the Judges’ Softball facility, compared to the Baseball field. Disparities include the Softball field not being regulation size, the chain-link dugout fence compared to the concrete softball dugouts and the lack of a permanent press box, quality drainage and more. Balakrishna recounts AD Haynie‘s budget request being declined in February after original plans for it to be built in 2022 did not come to fruition. Further, CFO Solomon reportedly told two S-As that new Baseball and Softball facilities are “a long-term priority.” Per Balakrishna, complaints have been filed with the Office of Equal Opportunity, which are being discussed with university administration. Greensboro selects former multi-stop DI and DII MBB HC Boone as its new HC. GC President Czarda: "Greensboro College is fortunate to have attracted one of the most respected and successful basketball coaches in the country whose history as a program-builder is well documented. Extraordinary coaches tend to be extraordinary teachers and leaders and we know Coach Boone's reputation in this regard is broadly recognized." (link) 

George Fox names Portland (DI) WBB Director of Operations/GFU alum Howard as its new WBB HC. AD Puckett: "Lauren stood out throughout the entire search process as the person that will guide our program forward in all three of our missional tenets: athletic excellence, academic success, and Christ-like character." Southern Maine WBB HC Norris has resigned after eight seasons leading the Huskies to pursue opportunities outside of coaching. AD Bean: "Samantha served as a dedicated coach and colleague, and her work with our student-athlete body helped strengthen and establish Huskies' Athletics and student-athlete connections in the community and across campus."
