Chico State (DII) selects UC San Diego Executive Senior Assoc. AD for Scholar-Athlete Success Eric Coleman as its new AD, starting December 2. VP for Student Affairs Isaac Brundage: “All of Eric's experience, from his time as a Division II student-athlete to his focus on student success, management, and strategic planning have prepared him for this role at Chico State. His values and mission match those of our University, and I am confident that he will lead a department that is successful across the board, producing champions in competition and in the classroom and setting our student-athletes up for success not only while they are here at Chico State but also as they head into the future and continue to make us proud.” (link)

Cincinnati AD John Cunningham talks to the Cincinnati Enquirer's Scott Springer about the Bearcats’ recent move to bring their multimedia rights inhouse: “Flexibility right now is at a premium considering everything that's going on. We just felt it was the right time to bring it in-house to allow us to bring our partners even closer to our athletics department. We're going to generate additional revenue and we're going to be nimble and flexible enough in this world of NIL to really put our student-athletes out there and be able to capitalize on their Name, Image and Likeness. [...] Under House, we're going to have to develop a unit that can go and handle what comes with payment to our student-athletes. That's going to be another restructuring that's going to happen. We're still working on that. Everybody's having to build out parallel paths. If House gets all the way through, you've got to have a path. If House fails to get all the way through, you've got to have an alternative approach to be competitive in the world of NIL. We're having to build two different models. We think House is going to get through, that's the consensus, but we've got to have an off-ramp if it doesn't.” (link)

In a piece from Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde on the stellar football start by Army West Point, Black Knights AD Mike Buddie comments: “My colleagues oftentimes express their envy of where we are. We have our challenges—when Russia invades Ukraine, it impacts our recruiting—but we’re not hiring a GM to do our payroll.” (link)

The Ivy League Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has proposed allowing the league’s football teams to participate in the FCS postseason, something which has been banned by the conference since 1945. The proposal needs approval from the league’s athletic directors, the policy committee and ultimately school presidents. The Harvard Crimson reports the proposal has not yet made it to the president's stage. When asked about it, Harvard AD Erin McDermott: “We’ll see. That’s really up to President Garber, so we haven’t had that conversation yet.” (link)

ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro tells CNBC’s Alex Sherman the company is “somewhat agnostic” in its preference for how consumers access ESPN, whether through the cable channel, DTC, Venu, etc. “There are pros and cons. You mentioned one of the pros of going direct-to-consumer is you have access to the customer. You have access to the data, you can take that data and create a more personalized experience for the sports fan; however, that traditional world is really good to ESPN and it's really good to the Walt Disney Company. There’s also less churn in the traditional world. We all know sports are seasonal and so one of the concerns that we have with the direct-to-consumer model is churn. It’s also one of the benefits of [the NBA] deal is it's an NBA and a WNBA deal, so we will have professional basketball just about year-round here and that will significantly help address churn.” While perhaps not a perfect analog to the NCAA’s championships media rights deal with ESPN, Pitaro says the company would have bid on the WNBA independently if it hadn’t been part of the NBA package. “I don't know if I'm happy about it [being baked in, but it] did make the process easier. But we made it very clear to the executives that we were very much interested in extending, renewing on the WNBA side as well.” Pitaro also says owning rights rather than “renting” them is not something the company is looking into at the moment, in large part because the company is pleased with the rights currently in its portfolio, many of which extend for a decade or more. Lots more, including Pitaro’s comments on balancing investments in high-quality journalism with talent that can reach younger audiences. (link)

More from Pitaro as there is growing concern among sports media executives regarding how difficult it is to capture kids’ attention. During the company’s recent media day, Pitaro remarked: “If you ask my direct reports what it is that’s keeping them up at night, if you ask me, it’s that. If you look at my kids: Netflix, Instagram, TikTok, Fortnite. They’re incredibly distracted. So can we make programs like Get Up and First Take that resonate with younger people?” Front Office Sports’ Michael McCarthy points out this is “part of why the NFL welcomed Swifties with open arms. … It’s why U.S. presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are doing more interviews with podcasts like Call Her Daddy, The Joe Rogan Experience, Bussin’ With The Boys, All the Smoke, and Club Shay Shay rather than legacy media outlets.” Horizon Sports & Experiences CEO David Levy points out the good news is that live sports are the last appointment viewing; however, he wonders how many media-rights dollars will be left for small and midsize sports after top leagues like the NFL and NBA sweep up most of the fees. “You may get clearance for your content. But are you going to get paid for that? If pricing goes up for the top-tier sports, what’s left for the next-level sports? The second-tier, third-tier sports?” Sports Media Advisors Founder/CEO Doug Perlman adds of the way younger audiences are consuming sports: “You can spend hours a day, which would have been unheard of not that long ago, engaging with a sport but never sit down and watch a three-hour window. That’s not great. On the one hand, it’s great they know more about the sport than anybody ever used to. But it can’t be monetized the same way. So it’s something everybody has to think about.” (link)

Also of importance from the media world, Comcast is considering a major restructuring of its media business that would include the creation of a separate company for its cable networks, such as MSNBC, CNBC, Bravo, USA, and Syfy, into a standalone company owned by Comcast shareholders. Cord Cutters News’ Luke Bouma notes the move would separate the cable networks from other NBCUniversal assets like the NBC broadcast network, Universal Studio, and theme parks. Comcast President Mike Cavanagh said during the company’s earnings call: “We’ve got a very strong hand. There may be some smart things to do and we want to study that.” Bouma also reports Comcast is open to exploring streaming partnerships that would bolster Peacock. “The company acknowledges the challenges of achieving profitability in the streaming market and is considering collaborations to enhance its offerings and expand its reach. There have already been reports of a possible Paramount+ and Peacock partnership.” During Q3, Comcast’s revenue increased 6.5% to $32.1B; net income fell 10.3% to $3.6B; and Peacock added 3M paid subscribers, bringing its total to 36M. The California State University system is changing its definition of student success from a four-year degree to getting a good job. The Los Angeles Times’ Teresa Watanabe explains that “as more students and families question the value of a college pedigree, the nation’s largest four-year university system plans to boost efforts to link higher education with clear employment payoffs, offering more intentional advising on how to choose a career path of interest, select the right major for it and network with alumni and others to help land related internships and jobs.” CSU Chancellor Mildred García: “We have to show students what’s the endgame. It’s not graduation. It’s how do we connect graduation to either a career that they’re studying or graduate school and help them get to that? That’s what families want, right? Return on investment. … We have the talent. We have to make sure that we understand that public higher education is an investment.” (link)

As Penn State prepares to face off against Ohio State this weekend, Nittany Lions AD Pat Kraft acknowledges the fans are hungry to take the next step in football. “I get it. We all sign up for it. We all come to Penn State to win national championships. I know (James Franklin) doesn’t run away from it. I sure don’t. It’s why I came here and why we’re investing. You don’t come to Penn State to be mediocre. Michigan won the national championship last year. Ohio State has been in that mix. I think it’s our time.” While the Nittany Lions have not beaten Michigan or Ohio State since 2020, they are undefeated against the rest of the league during that period, and Kraft points out the school’s NIL efforts have come a long way over the past few years. “We were literally nowhere [with NIL] when I got here. I think we’re in a really good position now. I think that’s where Ohio State and people we compete with had a leg up. They did good things and were aggressive early. We are at the point now where we know we can go toe to toe with them.” (link)

In anticipation of changes related to the House settlement, Arkansas has been “working for months to identify opportunities to reduce operating expenses, maximize revenue and supplement the generous support provided by those who have invested in our program,” according to Razorbacks AD Hunter Yurachek. One undertaking involves a comprehensive budget review to “explore new sources of revenue support as well as identify ways to operate more efficiently. … The goal of the review is to identify a net positive change of $15M in combined savings and increased revenues annually. We must continue to maximize additional revenue opportunities while also being dutiful stewards of the resources which we have been afforded.” The Razorbacks have been able to utilize new rules permitting logos on playing surfaces by partnering with Tyson Foods and Walmart to add their logos to both the field at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium and Nolan Richardson Court at Bud Walton Arena. Also from Yurachek: “Beginning this weekend, when fans purchase concessions and other items at Razorback sporting events, each transaction will include a 3% fee that will be designated to the funding of the additional scholarships that will be implemented with final approval of the settlement.” Furthermore, to enhance Annual Fund revenue, the department will implement a “comprehensive reset on ALL seating within Bud Walton Arena in time for the 2025-26 men’s basketball season.” More. North Carolina next month will begin selling beer and wine at the Smith Center for men’s and women’s basketball games and Olympic sports events at Carmichael Arena. Tar Heels AD Bubba Cunningham: "Many of our fans have asked for us to expand alcohol sales to our indoor events, and after five years, we think the time is right.. Not only is it consistent with many other events around the country, including NCAA championships and ACC tournaments, but it also adds a key financial stream as we prepare for revenue-sharing with student-athletes." The Big 12 has released a statement regarding concerns about the integrity of helmet communications: “Following the industry-wide concerns surrounding helmet communications, the Big 12 conducted a review of conference games and helmet communications processes to address any issues member institutions raised regarding this matter. The review showed that at no point was any Big 12 competition compromised. All Big 12 helmet communications programs now have the encryption update from GSC, and schools may use either CoachComm or GSC for coach-to-player communication at their discretion.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown examines just how good Hawaii’s athletic department can be and acknowledges the multitude of complications that arise from the state’s geography but adds the location may also provide opportunities. For instance, it is much closer to major international cities like Tokyo, Sydney and Seoul. “And that’s important, because Hawaii, and by extension, the university itself, is full of connections to many Asian countries. Roughly 16% of the entire state of Hawaii claims Japanese ancestry, while another 4% claims ties to South Korea. More than a third of the University of Hawaii’s student body identifies as ‘Asian,’ more than any other reported sub-group. This is not something I really thought about until I spoke to multiple coaches and administrators at the school, but many Hawaii staffers believe there’s plenty of untapped potential in trying to become the Pacific Rim’s Big Time College Team. … Given the state’s demographics and history, Hawaii is probably better equipped to build deep relationships in Asia than virtually anybody else in FBS...certainly better than anybody outside the P4.” Ultimately, Brown believes the department’s future will be shaped by how much money it can raise. “You don’t have to be the high bid to convince the right people to come play in paradise. You just need to be able to offer enough to pay for rent, shaved ice and the occasional bright blue beverage with fruit sticking out of it. That is a tall order. But I don’t think it’s an impossible one.” (link)

VCU officially broke ground on the 42-acre Athletic Village project on Wednesday. The first phase of construction includes a $37M track and field stadium. As reported earlier this week, construction of the village will span four phases, and, when complete, will include an 18-court indoor/outdoor tennis facility, a 4,000-seat soccer stadium, aforementioned track and field complex, and a 20K-sq-ft multipurpose training center. The $37M stadium is being funded by the sale of Sports Backers Stadium to the city’s Economic Development Authority ($25M) and private and corporate fundraising ($12M). Rams AD Ed McLaughlin: “It feels like I’ve been working on this project most of my professional life. Now the fun part begins. [...] It’ll be incredible for our student athletes. We need facilities that match what our aspirations are.” (link)

The Sun Belt is changing the format of its men’s and women’s basketball tournament brackets, effective this season. While the league will continue to take all 14 members to both championships and will maintain its seven-day tournament format, rest days will be eliminated from the postseason events. “In an effort to prioritize the value of the 18-game conference regular-season, the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds will now receive byes to the tournament semifinals. The No. 3 and No. 4 seeds will maintain byes to the tournament quarterfinals, which had previously been given to the top four seeds. With the elimination of rest days, higher-seeded teams will no longer face a lower-seeded team coming off a rest day.” Commissioner Keith Gill: “The new Sun Belt Basketball Championship brackets will reward our top seeds for their accomplishments during the regular season, ensuring they receive the advantage they’ve earned for their on-court performance.” (link)

The Athletic’s Matt Baker outlines defendants’ arguments in Georgia QB Jaden Rashada’s lawsuit against Florida Football HC Billy Napier, former Director of Player Engagement and NIL Marcus Castro-Walker and prominent UF supporter Hugh Hathcock. Castro-Walker contends the “only possible interpretation is that Jaden got greedy and voluntarily turned down guaranteed money in order to take whatever was behind Door #2. In today’s version of Let’s Make a (NIL) Deal, just as in the original television show, the contestant has no legal recourse when their own decision results in them ultimately leaving with only a Billy goat or a block of cheese. … The simple truth is that overly-optimistic ‘promises’ are made every day in college football recruiting. … Opening the doors of the federal courthouse to every college football player seeking injunctive relief or specific performance of an ‘oral contract’ when their dream doesn’t materialize would only lead to a class of plaintiffs larger than any mass tort action on record.” Napier’s motion asserts he did nothing wrong and that Rashada had agents and plenty of bargaining power as a prized recruit. Napier has stayed quiet publicly other than to say he felt “comfortable” with his actions. While neither UF nor the athletic department are named defendants, Baker observes: “The fact that one current employee (Napier) and one former one (Castro-Walker) are included raises another issue: Will they be protected by sovereign immunity, which helps shield state entities and employees during official actions?” (link)
