The Washington Post’s Jesse Dougherty talks with NCAA President Charlie Baker about the “impossible job” of protecting tradition and modernizing college sports, and Baker says: “While I certainly feel the weight of trying to get to the other side of all that’s going on now, the proverbial pearl is worth the dive. I mean, this stuff is important aside from what people see on a Saturday afternoon.” Dougherty notes that following a meeting with DI commissioners last month, three commissioners were frustrated that Baker spent just a few minutes on the House settlement before diving into the fan database. One commissioner tells Dougherty: “It’s almost like if we don’t say the word ‘employment,’ it will go away. Their message is that the kids don’t want to be employees – and it’s always ‘the kids’ – but some of us feel like that may not matter and we have to be preparing a lot more for the possibility.” Dougherty also observes that Baker was “hired, at least in part, to figure out Congress for the NCAA and hasn’t so far.” To that point, Baker remarks: “When you get to a certain age…you learn to understand that progress is progress, right? And it’s okay if you don’t get everything you look for as long as you’re moving in the right direction, and I certainly believe that if we can make this [House settlement] work, it makes it much easier to have a conversation about employment with Congress.” Meanwhile, former LEAD1 CEO Tom McMillen tells Dougherty: “A lot of this is going to depend on the winds of the election. Really, Charlie’s legacy, at least his near-term legacy, might have a lot to do with whether Republicans get a windfall in Congress, which could lead to something getting done. If the Democrats win, it’s a different compromise. But his ability to work legislatures will be more important next time around than ever before.” (link)

Grand Canyon will not head to the West Coast Conference, but instead will officially join the Mountain West, starting July 2026. Commissioner Gloria Nevarez on the addition of a ninth member: “Grand Canyon is a tremendous addition to the Mountain West. We are excited to expand our footprint into the City of Phoenix and the State of Arizona. Grand Canyon has been on an upward trajectory both academically and athletically for the past decade, and its addition to the league will enhance the competition across the Mountain West as we strive to earn NCAA postseason bids and compete for national championships.” (link); Within a statement from the WCC: “The WCC Presidents’ Council will continue to evaluate the current landscape of Division I athletics, move forward ambitiously in examining expansion and alliance opportunities that position the WCC for NCAA success; pursue meaningful scheduling opportunities for all members; and generate national exposure for the Conference through expansive broadcast visibility to which it has become accustomed.” (link)

Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek adds some context to the 3% concession fee fans can expect to see at athletic events starting this weekend: “There's going to be some changes in our financial model moving forward. There’s going to be some additional expenses that the revenue-sharing piece and the scholarship piece with the elimination of scholarship limits. So, the concession and merchandise fee simply is going to go to the Razorback Foundation to support our increase in the scholarships. We anticipate that's going to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 75 to 100 new scholarships that we will be awarding to our student-athletes beginning next year, if the lawsuit is approved, with a total price tag on those new scholarships of about $3M. That’s $3M that is currently not within our budget right now, and so we're trying to explore all areas of revenue and opportunity for revenue. … This is not all about our fans paying the price for these increases. We’ve got a budget committee that has dove into every single aspect of how we spend a dollar in our department of athletics. We’ve already made some significant cuts and changes within our operating budget.” On the re-seating of Bud Walton Arena, Yurachek says it’s something the department has put off for several years in anticipation of major renovations; however, the changes across college athletics have delayed those renovations. That said, Yurachek explains that “we’re going to have to do something with Bud Walton Arena in the next three to four to five years, but we decided that let’s go ahead and move forward with the re-seat in Bud Walton. … There will be a lot of people that are upset with the process, I understand that. As a leader, you have to make some decisions that are really tough decisions and this is one of those really tough decisions. But at the same time there will be some people that are really happy about the re-seating plan.” More. (link)

Missouri AD Laird Veatch in a letter to Tigers fans concerning the changing financial mechanics of college athletics: “...what does this mean for Mizzou? It means that we need to continue to be innovative as we navigate the most dramatic period of change in our history. [...] Now, with ‘revenue sharing’ on the horizon – which, of course, we will participate in at the highest levels – the reality is that the competitive stage of college athletics will be even more about resource investment to secure top-tier talent. [...] It won't be easy. Change never is. But disruptive change in any industry creates space for brave and innovative movers to seize market-share and elevate their competitive position. Now is the time for us to collectively push harder than ever before to position Mizzou for sustained championship-level competitive success. [...] …our athletics leadership team has been spending significant time over the past several months strategically analyzing all aspects of our operations, including our fundraising, sales and pricing structures, to proactively prepare for next year and beyond. Throughout the coming weeks and months, we will be providing you with more detailed information about the strategic adjustments necessary to achieve our aspirational goals.” Interestingly, the letter also includes graphics displaying Missouri’s ranks within the SEC in total revenue (13th of 15), as well as Total Football Ticket/Donation Average (15th of 16). Montana AD Kent Haslam joins the Inside the Den podcast to discuss where the Grizzlies are currently positioned along the changing landscape and says: “We want to be prepared to offer the very best opportunities for our student-athletes, and I've said this before: for us to go to the FBS and join Conference USA and send our volleyball team to Louisiana just doesn't make any sense for us. We need to stay regional, we need to play like-minded schools and so you want to be selective in that. I think it's calmed for a while. The Pac-12 needs to find another full-time school. The Mountain West has found its eighth, that’s the magic number. I imagine they’ll want to go bigger than that. Our fit is far more in the Mountain West…but we just want to be prepared. We feel like we've got our facilities in a spot where we're prepared. Our fan base is certainly attractive, the television audience that we bring – and when I say ‘we,’ do mean Montana State too because we are governed by the same board of regents, so we're tied together.” Haslam goes on to say the biggest challenge for the Griz right now boils down to money. “We can only generate so much money. We’re already asking our fans to generate 65-70% percent of our budget. That can’t go up when our budget goes to $40M from $24M. We can't pass that on to the fans. I’ve said this multiple times that it's a commitment really from the state of Montana I think to say, ‘Look, both of these institutions…we see them as economic drivers, we see them as wanting to play at this level.’ And then the other big thing to really watch” is the House settlement, particularly the roster limits associated with it.” More from Haslam. During its meeting this week, the Men's Basketball Committee focused much of its discussion on how it evaluates teams, including the conference monitoring program, the NCAA Evaluation Tool and other evaluation metrics, such as the Wins Above Bubble and Torvik ratings that the committee adopted this summer. North Carolina AD/Committee Chair Bubba Cunningham: "We felt it was important to have the discussion about the NET and the other metrics, not only because the WAB and Torvik are relatively new to the evaluation process, but because we have five new committee members. It's unprecedented for this committee to have so many first-year members so it's important for them to learn best practices for evaluating teams throughout the season, and it's equally important for all of us to understand the various data points and how to use them. … Committee members have been concerned about how best to evaluate and emphasize a team's strength of schedule and results, especially non-conference. We believe that the WAB will be an important tool to help objectively see the value of each win and loss. Whether it's a non-conference or conference game, whether you win by a single point or by 30, the WAB is going to tell us a lot about what you did against the schedule you played.” (link)

The “hidden potential” of Pac-12 Enterprises helped convince Boise State, San Diego State, Fresno State and Colorado State to join the league, according to The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner, and Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey says: “I’m bullish. I see a lot of value in that. We’re big on telling our story and streaming and what’s coming. I feel like [Pac-12 Enterprises] gives us the opportunity to be on the front end of creating something that could be epic.” Aztecs AD John David Wicker last month noted that “something that kind of gets lost with people is the Pac-12 Enterprises. [It’s] a massive asset that is sitting there that was, quite frankly, a big reason why we considered this.” Pac-12 Enterprises SVP Michael Molinari points out the “centralized model is superior to having individual production on campuses – that isn’t financially efficient. We have one building versus 12 or 16″ for other conferences. Looking ahead to the future, Wilner notes that “as streaming expands its territory in the media ecosystem, Pac-12 Enterprises could generate significant profit – in addition to what it provides the schools and their media partners.” Dickey subsequently observes: “You look at the Pac-12 and the things they were well ahead of the curve on, and those things still hold true today. I don’t think they were off-base at all. Hence, the investment they had in Pac-12 Enterprises. They were right on, and fortunately, we get to be a part of that.” (link)

Houston will roll out long-awaited “Houston Blue” merchandise today at several retail locations, including Academy Sports + Outdoors, Dick’s Sporting Goods and the campus bookstore. Cougars AD Eddie Nuñez says he learned about the Houston Blue “before I was even able to ask because it came fast and furious. … It’s a great opportunity for us to really generate new revenue for this department. How do we expand our footprint? How do we expand our options. We wanted to extend this as far and wide as we could.” The Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte explains that to avoid any pushback from the NFL, which last year sent UH a cease-and-desist for “blatant copying” of the old Houston Oilers uniforms, the new design has made modifications with the stripes on the football jersey. Nuñez: “I understand the NFL has their expectations of their uniforms, the colors, and certain things associated with the way things are branded. The reality is we also understand what Houston means to the city and the color blue…we know the impact and how important these uniforms, the ‘Houston Blue’ are to this community and to this university.” He also notes there are no plans for the Houston Blue color scheme to replace the primary red unis. “Our color, predominately red, is what you want to see around town. More important than anything else is that Houston, that UH.” (link)

The ABCA and AVCA, along with the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America, Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association, Intercollegiate Tennis Association, National Field Hockey Coaches Association, U.S. Track & Field And Cross Country Coaches Association and National Wrestling Coaches Association retained FGS Global earlier this month to lobby on federal NIL legislation “that protects Olympic sports programs and broad-based sports sponsorship,” according to Politico’s Caitlin Oprysko, who points out that “one of the Olympic sport associations’ new lobbyists at FGS, Colleen Bell, is a former legislative director for Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), one of the Democrats leading those discussions on the Hill.” Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich adds that FGS Global is “part of that NCAA/power conference effort, however, as a longtime lobbyist for the Big Ten. The firm worked for the Big Ten as recently as this past quarter, according to lobbying disclosures, but it’s unclear whether that relationship will continue or be seen as a conflict of interest given its new clients. FGS Global did not immediately respond to a request for comment.” FGS Global said in disclosure forms that it was hired to develop “a federal solution that protects Olympic sports programs and broad-based sports sponsorship.” (link, link)

Runner’s World’s Theo Khaler gets feedback from running coaches around the industry on how industry changes will impact their sport. Virginia Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Vin Lananna: “Anyone who thinks that those changes will not be dramatic is not paying attention. [...] If we start making drastic cuts in either scholarships or budgets, we will be impacting not only the U.S., but the international presence at the Olympic Games in 2028, which we’re hosting. [...] To me, there is an opportunity here for every one of our athletes, past and present and future, to talk about the importance of that access to education, which they would not have without this.” Former LSU coach Sam Seemes, who is now CEO of the USTFCCCA, points to three to five years down the road when implications of House, et al are fully understood: “I think that’s when there could be the biggest reset [of resources to running programs].” (link)

Connecticut Women’s Basketball HC Geno Auriemma talks with NBC’s Nicole Auerbach about what women’s basketball needs to do to continue its growth to the next level. “I found that both in the WNBA and in women's college basketball we have to get past that point where we had been treated all these years like, ‘Hey, shouldn't we be really good citizens and support women's sports and women's athletics and women's basketball and the WNBA? They really deserve that.’ To now this is mainstream business, this is mainstream entertainment and we want to keep bringing in more talent to entertain these people better, to make the game better, make the viewing experience better, which also means that when it's not the best that it can be – just like the NFL or just like the NBA or Major League Baseball or anything else along with it – comes the criticism of ‘You should be better. You should have done better. That’s not good enough. I pay this amount of money to come watch that. That needs to be better and everybody held accountable for that.’ So, you have to be able to take both of those things, all the good and all that, and up to this point I don't know that we've done a great job with that. But if we do, I think we can take this to a level that no one ever imagined even as many as four or five years ago.” (link)

Chico State (DII) selects UC San Diego Executive Senior Assoc. AD for Scholar-Athlete Success Eric Coleman as its new AD, starting December 2. VP for Student Affairs Isaac Brundage: “All of Eric's experience, from his time as a Division II student-athlete to his focus on student success, management, and strategic planning have prepared him for this role at Chico State. His values and mission match those of our University, and I am confident that he will lead a department that is successful across the board, producing champions in competition and in the classroom and setting our student-athletes up for success not only while they are here at Chico State but also as they head into the future and continue to make us proud.” (link)

Cincinnati AD John Cunningham talks to the Cincinnati Enquirer's Scott Springer about the Bearcats’ recent move to bring their multimedia rights inhouse: “Flexibility right now is at a premium considering everything that's going on. We just felt it was the right time to bring it in-house to allow us to bring our partners even closer to our athletics department. We're going to generate additional revenue and we're going to be nimble and flexible enough in this world of NIL to really put our student-athletes out there and be able to capitalize on their Name, Image and Likeness. [...] Under House, we're going to have to develop a unit that can go and handle what comes with payment to our student-athletes. That's going to be another restructuring that's going to happen. We're still working on that. Everybody's having to build out parallel paths. If House gets all the way through, you've got to have a path. If House fails to get all the way through, you've got to have an alternative approach to be competitive in the world of NIL. We're having to build two different models. We think House is going to get through, that's the consensus, but we've got to have an off-ramp if it doesn't.” (link)

In a piece from Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde on the stellar football start by Army West Point, Black Knights AD Mike Buddie comments: “My colleagues oftentimes express their envy of where we are. The Ivy League Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has proposed allowing the league’s football teams to participate in the FCS postseason, something which has been banned by the conference since 1945. The proposal needs approval from the league’s athletic directors, the policy committee and ultimately school presidents. The Harvard Crimson reports the proposal has not yet made it to the president's stage. When asked about it, Harvard AD Erin McDermott: “We’ll see. That’s really up to President Garber, so we haven’t had that conversation yet.” (link)

ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro tells CNBC’s Alex Sherman the company is “somewhat agnostic” in its preference for how consumers access ESPN, whether through the cable channel, DTC, Venu, etc. “There are pros and cons. You mentioned one of the pros of going direct-to-consumer is you have access to the customer. You have access to the data, you can take that data and create a more personalized experience for the sports fan; however, that traditional world is really good to ESPN and it's really good to the Walt Disney Company. There’s also less churn in the traditional world. We all know sports are seasonal and so one of the concerns that we have with the direct-to-consumer model is churn. It’s also one of the benefits of [the NBA] deal is it's an NBA and a WNBA deal, so we will have professional basketball just about year-round here and that will significantly help address churn.” While perhaps not a perfect analog to the NCAA’s championships media rights deal with ESPN, Pitaro says the company would have bid on the WNBA independently if it hadn’t been part of the NBA package. “I don't know if I'm happy about it [being baked in, but it] did make the process easier. But we made it very clear to the executives that we were very much interested in extending, renewing on the WNBA side as well.” Pitaro also says owning rights rather than “renting” them is not something the company is looking into at the moment, in large part because the company is pleased with the rights currently in its portfolio, many of which extend for a decade or more. Lots more, including Pitaro’s comments on balancing investments in high-quality journalism with talent that can reach younger audiences. (link)

More from Pitaro as there is growing concern among sports media executives regarding how difficult it is to capture kids’ attention. During the company’s recent media day, Pitaro remarked: “If you ask my direct reports what it is that’s keeping them up at night, if you ask me, it’s that. If you look at my kids: Netflix, Instagram, TikTok, Fortnite. They’re incredibly distracted. So can we make programs like Get Up and First Take that resonate with younger people?” Front Office Sports’ Michael McCarthy points out this is “part of why the NFL welcomed Swifties with open arms. … It’s why U.S. presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are doing more interviews with podcasts like Call Her Daddy, The Joe Rogan Experience, Bussin’ With The Boys, All the Smoke, and Club Shay Shay rather than legacy media outlets.” Horizon Sports & Experiences CEO David Levy points out the good news is that live sports are the last appointment viewing; however, he wonders how many media-rights dollars will be left for small and midsize sports after top leagues like the NFL and NBA sweep up most of the fees. “You may get clearance for your content. But are you going to get paid for that? If pricing goes up for the top-tier sports, what’s left for the next-level sports? The second-tier, third-tier sports?” Sports Media Advisors Founder/CEO Doug Perlman adds of the way younger audiences are consuming sports: “You can spend hours a day, which would have been unheard of not that long ago, engaging with a sport but never sit down and watch a three-hour window. That’s not great. On the one hand, it’s great they know more about the sport than anybody ever used to. But it can’t be monetized the same way. So it’s something everybody has to think about.” (link)

Also of importance from the media world, Comcast is considering a major restructuring of its media business that would include the creation of a separate company for its cable networks, such as MSNBC, CNBC, Bravo, USA, and Syfy, into a standalone company owned by Comcast shareholders. Cord Cutters News’ Luke Bouma notes the move would separate the cable networks from other NBCUniversal assets like the NBC broadcast network, Universal Studio, and theme parks. Comcast President Mike Cavanagh said during the company’s earnings call: “We’ve got a very strong hand. There may be some smart things to do and we want to study that.” Bouma also reports Comcast is open to exploring streaming partnerships that would bolster Peacock. “The company acknowledges the challenges of achieving profitability in the streaming market and is considering collaborations to enhance its offerings and expand its reach. There have already been reports of a possible Paramount+ and Peacock partnership.” During Q3, Comcast’s revenue increased 6.5% to $32.1B; net income fell 10.3% to $3.6B; and Peacock added 3M paid subscribers, bringing its total to 36M. The California State University system is changing its definition of student success from a four-year degree to getting a good job. The Los Angeles Times’ Teresa Watanabe explains that “as more students and families question the value of a college pedigree, the nation’s largest four-year university system plans to boost efforts to link higher education with clear employment payoffs, offering more intentional advising on how to choose a career path of interest, select the right major for it and network with alumni and others to help land related internships and jobs.” CSU Chancellor Mildred García: “We have to show students what’s the endgame. It’s not graduation. It’s how do we connect graduation to either a career that they’re studying or graduate school and help them get to that? That’s what families want, right? Return on investment. … We have the talent. We have to make sure that we understand that public higher education is an investment.” (link)
