In remarks at her introductory press conference, UIC AD Andrea Williams said sports “provides access and opportunity to our young people. Like me, these are students that may not have gotten into these schools otherwise. Athletics is about being surrounded by resources to not only ensure you graduate, but are supported and developed as an individual for life after sport. To give athletes the tools to be successful in life and to be a positive contributor to the community after graduation, that is what I want for all of our students at UIC. We want to help guide and direct them to success and personal growth.” On why she chose to return to college athletics, Williams explained the “real draw for me…is impact and influence. To serve in a role that can support athletes and hopefully bring more compassionate leadership to the space. To engage with campus, listen to our coaches, champion our athletes, drive revenue, support our staff and so much more. There is no doubt that college athletics is facing challenging times, but what we know is when met with adversity, athletics has always been resilient. We have always found a way around it, over it, or, goshdarnit, we’ve got to go through it.” Full press conference. (link)

Freshly minted Georgia Southern AD Chris Davis remarked during his introductory press conference yesterday that “I’ll sit here and tell you all right now I am not done growing. I think people forget about that just because they get the role, that’s why I said I’m going to be the same me. It’s gotten me to where I am today because I believe in being who you are, and being called. But you always have to know you’re in a growth mindset and being willing to assess and adjust. I think that’s where you keep the vulnerability and keep the ego out of the way, and stay about who you are.” Davis also said he wants to “continue the momentum. We've had unbelievable success over the last four-and-a-half years, and all the different factors of college athletics, and want to continue to drive that momentum, not miss a beat. And really be very people-centric. I'm a firm believer because of maybe my marketing background and external background of understanding how important brands are, brands are huge and the Georgia Southern logo is way bigger than us. It will be bigger than us. But the people behind the logo drive it." (link, link)

Oregon tops the first College Football Playoff ranking of the season, followed by Ohio State, Georgia, Miami (FL), Texas, Penn State, Tennessee, Indiana, BYU, Notre Dame, Alabama and Boise State in the top 12. On the outside looking in: SMU, Texas A&M, LSU, Ole Miss, Iowa State, Pittsburgh, Kansas State, Colorado, Washington State, Louisville, Clemson, Missouri and Army West Point. (link); The rankings prove brand names continue to get “preferential treatment,” according to Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde, who cites Indiana, BYU and SMU as getting a raw deal. One thing they have in common is starting the season outside the top 25, and Forde writes: “The slot voters in the AP and coaches polls who lack the imagination to reconfigure their ballots after actual games are played haven’t made up for that lapse – and the first CFP committee rankings largely mirror those.” Another common quality among the three is they are “not blueblood programs like the one-loss teams ahead of them: the Ohio State Buckeyes, Georgia Bulldogs, Texas Longhorns, Penn State Nittany Lions and Tennessee Volunteers. The Buckeyes and Bulldogs deserve to be ahead of Indiana and BYU, but not Texas, Penn State and Tennessee.” Forde also submits that the “committee seems to have followed its tacit marching orders from Tony Petitti and Greg Sankey…to make sure things go ‘incredibly well.’ … The good news is that things will change significantly over the next month. The infuriating news is that the usual biases seem to be in effect, favoring the big-name programs and holding back the up-and-comers.” (link)

College Football Playoff Executive Director Richard Clark and Michigan AD/CFP Selection Committee Chair Warde Manuel met with media members to discuss the rankings and said of Ohio State being slotted ahead of Georgia: “Ohio State's one loss on the road was against the No. 1 team, and they lost by one. They had an impressive win this past weekend at Penn State, and they have been very consistent. Top-5 defense. … So for us, it was the consistency. Georgia, very good team, great win against Texas, a win over Clemson. Consistency in terms of their offense. They've had some inconsistencies there, but they have great defense, and they're allowing only 17 points per game. It was a close analysis, but in the end we just felt that Ohio State was a more consistent performer at this point in time.” Manuel also explained Indiana’s position behind several one-loss teams: “Their strength of schedule was not very high in comparison to some others, but the way that they have played in those games and the dominance that they have shown in those games, winning by an average of 33 points a game, has been really impressive to the committee. So we couldn't ignore that. As it related to where they are ranked and how we saw them, even though strength of schedule is important, we also have watched those games. The only game they've been behind was last week against Michigan State by 10, and they came back and I believe went on a 47-point run to win that game. Very impressive team.” Asked whether Florida State’s situation last season disincentivizes teams to disclose injuries, Clark replied that committee members are “going to see, just like they did last year, they're going to see how a team performs with the loss of a key player, and they're going to evaluate them on that merit, and if they know that player is not coming back, they know that that's the team moving forward that they're going to rank for the future. Whether a team discloses their injuries or not, the committee is going to see how they perform without a player, and that's how they're going to evaluate them.” Full Q&A. (link)

Coach’s Wife Life’s Kristen Eargle sits down with TurnkeyZRG VP for Coaches, College & Performance Jocelyn Gates, who has previously served in various leadership roles at Ohio State, Boston College and other universities. Gates, who is also the wife of Missouri Men’s Basketball HC Dennis Gates, talks about balancing two high-profile careers in the same field, her path into college athletics, characteristics that stand out in interviews and lots more. Gates says her husband did not inform her about his decision to leave Cleveland State for Mizzou and explains she “appreciated not being in a position where I had to lie to people – which I would have done, I would’ve been like, ‘Hey, I don’t know where we’re going or what we’re doing – but I didn’t have to do that. It’s a fun story that now we’ll have forever.” Gates notes she’s okay with not discussing career decisions with her husband in part because “I think maybe working in college sports has allowed me to be flexible and fluid in that way. I’ve lived in so many different cities, I'm kind of at this point like, ‘Where you go, I go, and it's fine with me. I trust you and your career enough that you're going to make the best decision for our family as well.’” In regards to what stands out when interviewing coaches, Gates explains she likes when coaches talk about their families when asked to talk about themselves “because if you are a family person…that also means you're likely going to put your student-athletes first because you see them as a family. I think that then translates into how the parents view the coaches.” Other things that stand out in interviews to Gates are being unafraid to discuss one’s accomplishments and a willingness to work with the administration. “ADs want to hear that. They want to know that they’re going to have a partner and not someone that’s difficult to work with.” Lots more. (link)

New UCLA Chief Revenue Officer Daniel Cruz, who spent years working at Disney, to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “Working at Disney, I've been very fortunate to have access to some of the greatest IP in the world. I look at college sports, I look at UCLA as [some] of the top IP assets that are out there. … What I'm hoping to do is create a super authentic connection between the brands we want to work with and the student-athletes that we want to bring to the forefront to promote and showcase, so that our fans see that it's an authentic connection, and we're elevating ourselves the brands that we're working with and the student athletes as well.” Bruins AD Martin Jarmond: “What we're seeing is the commercialization of college sports, and we're entering a new agreement with our student athletes, a business relationship, helping them monetize their brand, create meaningful corporate partnerships, develop true NIL opportunities. I call it the ‘New Deal.’ There's got to be a value proposition for our student athletes that we have not considered before -- storytelling, branding, development, developing revenue opportunities. It's all about where this is going.” (link)

Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter explains that U.S. District Court Judge Clifton Corker’s order for a November 14 conference call with the attorneys general of Tennessee and Virginia and the NCAA is likely due to the parties asking to extend the NCAA’s deadline to answer the states’ complaint. The fourth such request was filed last week, and Winter notes: “If I had to guess, I think the NCAA is hoping the House settlement allows it to ultimately settle this case. And that there won’t be another federal court decision holding the NCAA’s athlete compensation/recruiting rules violate antitrust law.” (link)

Scout Founder/CEO Michael Haddix Jr. pens a guest post for SBJ about how institutions “need to adopt new structures and compliance measures” post-House. “As government-regulated institutions, universities cannot afford to perpetuate [the current] disorganized system without oversight or proper management. Schools must urgently establish a professional, standardized framework to manage this new responsibility, which includes developing the infrastructure necessary to pay multiple athletes multiple times per year in compliance with state and federal laws. … Additionally, schools must ensure financial transparency and implement compliance systems to efficiently track payments and manage contracts securely, with a focus on protecting athletes’ privacy and sensitive information.” Haddix also asserts it’s “crucial” to equip players with tools such as support for tax filing, financial planning, and saving for the future. Haddix goes on to note that “schools must establish clear guidelines” for how they will coexist with collectives. “The relationship between schools and these collectives must be formalized, ensuring that athletes benefit without creating conflicts or legal challenges. As NIL payments become more intertwined with the schools themselves, the days of loosely organized, donor-led collectives need to be over. … The $22M cap is just the beginning — schools must be prepared for this number to grow as the market evolves. In the meantime, clear operational frameworks, compliance systems, and athlete-focused resources are not just necessary — they’re critical.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown unpacks the possible ramifications of the presidential election on college sports and writes: “If Donald Trump wins the presidential election, it’s hard to imagine a scenario where Republicans don’t also capture unified control of the House and Senate. In that world, even if the Republicans don’t control 60 votes in the Senate (and they won’t), I believe it is substantially more likely that the NCAA will be able to secure federal legislation limiting the employment status and bargaining potential of college athletes. It’s difficult, although I guess not impossible, to imagine a scenario where Democrats control the House, Senate, and White House. A Kamala Harris victory probably means a divided government, which will make comprehensive college athletics legislation, in any direction, more difficult. More than a few left-leaning ADs and administrator types have told me over the last few months that while they very much do not want Republicans to control the White House, House and Senate…they acknowledge the outcome would be better for their short-term business interests.” On the topic of employment, Brown observes that – absent Congressional action – “it is entirely possible that future court cases or athlete organization attempts (like at Dartmouth) could rule that at least some groups of athletes are employees. If that’s true, it could be very bad news for any athlete currently on a student visa. Immigration experts have told me many college athletes would be unlikely to qualify for the corresponding H1B or P-1 visa program.” Ultimately, Brown continues, all of this “is the risk college sports leaders took when they kicked various regulatory cans down the road for the last 20 years. But what’s done is done. Congress and the White House are fundamentally in charge of driving many of the biggest decisions in college sports history.” (link)

As South Carolina’s AD search moves forward, The Big Spur’s John Whittle reports some “names that I feel comfortable in saying are going to either be involved in the process, or who South Carolina is going to want to be involved in the process. I am still told that (President Michael) Amiridis is leaning towards hiring a current athletics director, preferably at a Power 4 school. I can't completely rule out other candidates, but a sitting AD seems to be the most likely direction.” The list includes Georgia Tech AD J Batt, Army West Point AD Mike Buddie, Gamecocks Senior Deputy AD Jeff Crane, Georgia Executive Assoc. AD for Strategic Communications Steven Drummond, Towson AD Steve Eigenbrot, Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek and LSU Executive Deputy AD/COO Keli Zinn. (link)

Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey covers several topics on the On the Fly podcast, including the university’s innovative spirit, of which the blue turf is emblematic. Dickey says over 17K people came to Albertsons Stadium last year outside of athletic events just to see the turf and get their pictures taken. “The blue is powerful. It differentiates us from many others, and that’s something that we are trying to take advantage of and try to tell our story around. It's special and it really drives a lot of the visiting teams and those that are maybe non-conference-specific, they want to come through and they want to see it. It becomes that bucket list item for people. I know there's a lot out there in terms of ducks and geese, and if they dive bomb it because they think it's a pond – we do not have those problems. That’s just an urban legend, I guess.” Dickey goes on to remark that “we can't just be the blue turf and can’t just be three Fiesta Bowls. It’s important to remember the past and recognize it but not to live in it. My job now is to elevate it.” On the House settlement, Dickey explains that “we’re never going to have what everyone else has and that's okay. … I do believe that college football is on this fast track to potentially breaking away from the current model and what does that mean for us? I don't know, I can't guarantee what it's going to look like towards the end of all these television contracts…[but] we can project, and as a leader, I have to be ahead of everything. I can't wait for things to happen ,and that’s how we’re approaching House.” Full podcast. (link)

Utah Football HC Kyle Whittingham believes it’s more difficult to build a culture in the NIL/transfer portal era, “and I think there’s a lot of teams across the country that are feeling and going through similar situations. Four, five, six years ago before the advent of the portal, whenever that was, you might replace 25 guys out of 125 on your team. Now you’re replacing 45-plus. And the culture, I don’t know if diluted is the right word, but before you had 100 guys teaching 25 guys how we do our thing and now it’s almost a 50/50 split, the new guys as opposed to the guys that have been in the program. … I don’t want to say it’s like you’re hiring mercenaries every year, but it’s a situation where, again, you’ve got to collect as much talent as quickly as you can and then hope it gels and comes together and you get results. It is a different approach and different strategy than when you had guys just marinate in your program for four, five, six years and it is different. But again, not making excuses or complaining, because the entire country is going through the same thing. I just feel that maybe our culture and the way we did things gave us an edge back when that could be possible to have happened.” (link)

Legal Matters…
+ U.S. District Court Judge Clifton Corker has scheduled a November 14 conference call for an update in the lawsuit filed earlier this year by the attorneys general in Tennessee and Virginia against the NCAA. Corker granted a preliminary injunction against the NCAA in February which led to the NCAA halting all investigations into collectives. (link)
+ A group of DI volunteer baseball coaches have asked a federal judge in California to certify their proposed antitrust class action challenging the NCAA’s since-repealed “uniform wage fix” bylaw that paid volunteer coaches nothing, thereby preventing them from receiving market value for their services. + South Carolina self-reported and was charged with a Level III NCAA violation in the case involving former Director of Football Player Personnel Taylor Edwards, who reportedly sent a recruiting notice to a four-year prospective student-athlete prior to receiving written notification of the student-athlete’s intention to enter the transfer portal. Penalties including a one-week ban on recruiting, a four-day reduction in recruiting days in Spring 2025 and rules education to the football staff. (link)
