The Results Are In…
+ NCAA VP of External Affairs Tim Buckley to Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich on last night’s election: “We’ve had productive, substantive conversations with members of both parties in recent months and are optimistic an opportunity exists to advance a targeted, bipartisan solution to ensure a stable, equitable, and sustainable future for college sports for years to come." (link)
+ A Democratic congressional aide also tells Christovich: “It’s a bad day to be a college athlete. Great day to be a college president or conference commissioner.” Christovich also reports that “Republican aides, as well as Buckley, have said they believed that they had made headway in convincing several Democrats to swing toward an anti-employment provision. Either way, one Republican aide said there’s still an expectation that any college sports bill would have to be bipartisan, even if the House ends up with a Republican majority. But that aide is confident several Democrats have become more amenable to an anti-employment provision in recent months, and doesn’t think the issue is as partisan as others have described it.” (link)
+ The Washington Post’s Jesse Dougherty shares this from a Democratic staffer on Capitol Hill following last night’s election: "From a pure business sense, the NCAA should be doing backflips in Indianapolis." (link)

Baylor President/Big 12 Board Chair Linda Livingstone sent a letter to campus leaders calling for an “urgent need for the presidents and chancellors from the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten and SEC” to gather in person to discuss "models for the future of college football specifically and college athletics overall,” ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports, noting that Livingstone is calling for a “Presidents and Chancellors Summit on the Future of College Athletics” in the Dallas area on December 2-3 at a specific hotel. There is no expectation that Big Ten and SEC presidents and/or chancellors will attend, and Thamel adds: “She references, but not specifically, the so-called Super League models and wants ‘an opportunity to hear from the architects of these models or to discuss their implications together as university leaders.’ She adds: ‘The Big 12 Board believes this is an important opportunity for us as presidents and chancellors to reset our role in college athletics as we seek to create a sustainable model for the future.’ The letter was born from a discussion at a Big 12 board meeting in October, where Livingstone expressed a desire for the Big 12 board to learn more about the options that have surfaced in the market. Some board members were surprised, per sources, this turned into a potential summit.” (link)

ACC ADs heard a presentation today from architects of Project Rudy, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who explains: “The presentation – only informational – was a small portion of a meeting largely focused on House. ACC takes no position on & has made no commitments to Rudy. … While ACC & Big 12 officials have been open to league-wide meetings with those from Project Rudy, SEC & Big Ten leaders have declined, at least so far, to meet as a conference with the Rudy architects, which include former Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick & SMASH Capital Investors. ACC’s ‘Rudy’ presentation comes a day after Baylor President & Big 12 Chair Linda Livingstone sent a letter to presidents urging them to gather for a summit to explore college sports models.” Dellenger also reports there is little interest among SEC and Big Ten leaders to attend the summit. Northern Illinois’ interest in joining the Mountain West as a football-only member is “waning,” according to Action Network’s Brett McMurphy, who reports the conference is now considering North Dakota State. McMurphy also notes that NIU’s decision to remain in the MAC would also guarantee Toledo stays in the league. “Ultimately, the uncertainty of the MWC’s future, football competitiveness for access to the College Football Playoff as well as NIU’s loyalty to the MAC — where the Huskies have been members for nearly 30 years — were deciding factors in staying in the MAC, sources said. There's support within the Mountain West for North Dakota State. However, there's ‘some concern’ that FBS power brokers — such as SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey and Big Ten Commish Tony Petitti — may use their influence to limit more FCS schools moving to the FBS ranks, industry sources said.” (link)

Wyoming AD Tom Burman pens a letter to fans explaining that “we will undoubtedly be faced with challenges because of this [House] settlement. Many institutions, similar to ours, will not be able to share revenue at a level close to the maximum allotment. We will begin revenue-sharing in 2025. Some will refuse to be at the forefront of this new reality and fall behind their competition. We will not be one of those institutions. I believe that these circumstances provide us with an incredible opportunity to recruit and retain high-level student-athletes and do it better than our competition. … Many of our counterparts will reduce expenses and shift that money to revenue sharing through drastic changes in department structure. Some will eliminate/reduce scholarships in Olympic sports or eliminate sports altogether. I view that as a last resort.” (link)

Cincinnati AD John Cunningham talks with SBJ’s Ben Portnoy about bringing UC’s multimedia rights in-house and explains: “Revenue is important and as we thought through this multimedia contract, we really dug into our options that were out there, and certainly talked to everybody in the industry. I started to talk to others that were outside of our industry in the pro sports market [and] kind of developed this idea that now might be the time to bring our assets in-house, really control our multimedia rights. Flexibility right now is at a premium with everything going on. We can raise revenue this way, and that's going to be, obviously, really important. And then, also, we can really connect our student athletes even more closely with our local community in this world of NIL that's at a premium as well.” Cunningham also points out that “when you have all of your assets that you own, you're just able to work more closely with your sponsors and bring them in closer to your department than they are. The other thing that we keep thinking about is how we tailor experiences to our partners. And that can involve tickets, it can involve campus relationships, it can involve all kinds of different things that are maybe more difficult to navigate when you have a third-party involved.” Still, Cunningham says there’s a good chance Learfield will remain involved. “All of our national sales, we're going to be open for business to whoever is out there looking to sell nationally. So that's part of the equation.” (link)

Georgia AD Josh Brooks tells the Athens Banner-Herald’s Marc Weiszer the Bulldogs have prepped for “every single scenario” should UGA host a first-round College Football Playoff game. Weiszer explains those preparations have included securing hotel reservations and calls and webinars with CFP staff, which has worked with Collegiate Sports Travel over the past year to reserve rooms “in almost all of the FBS school campus sites.” While schools are allowed to host games at different venues, such as nearby NFL stadiums, CFP Executive Director Richard Clark says no one has exercised that option. “It holds on to the traditions and some of the pageantry of college football. Some of these teams when they bring that home game to their school, it might be the biggest game they’ve ever had on their campus. That’s going to be pretty spectacular.” (link)

Despite a “rise in operational costs that is on the way,” UCF will not increase Football season ticket prices for 2025, per Knights AD Terry Mohajir. UCF has seven home games next season, four of which are Big 12 kicks. (link)

Acrobatics and tumbling, triathlon and stunt are trending toward NCAA championship consideration, according to sports sponsorship data released by the NCAA last month. Charlotte Executive Assoc. AD/SWA/Committee on Women’s Athletics Chair Ragean Hill: "I'm inspired by the rising sponsorship in emerging sports, which brings crucial support and visibility to women's athletics. The increase in sport sponsorship plays a pivotal role in creating equitable opportunities for female athletes and in amplifying the success of programs that drive inclusivity and representation across all levels of competition.” Additionally, women's flag football has applied to the program to become an emerging sport. The Committee on Women's Athletics reviewed the sport's application at its fall meeting and anticipates making a formal recommendation to the divisions in February when it meets again. (link)

Grand Canyon President Brian Mueller talks about the NIL opportunities for GCU student-athletes moving forward: “As Arizona grows and all these companies keep moving here, they’re looking for an introduction into the Valley, and we represent for many of them an opportunity to do that. Where our values align, there’s going to be a lot of opportunity for the university, but there’s going to be a lot of opportunity for our student-athletes. I’m not one who poo-poos NIL. I think if we do this right in college athletics and the players can make some money, what’s going to happen is they’re going to stay in school. The big problem in college athletics is not the kids that should’ve got paid that didn’t. It’s the kids that think they’re going to get paid as professional athletes that are not going to. Now if they can make a little money while they’re in school and they stay in school and they take serious majors and they graduate – if they don’t make it as professional athletes, they’re going to have a future.” (link)

In remarks at her introductory press conference, UIC AD Andrea Williams said sports “provides access and opportunity to our young people. Like me, these are students that may not have gotten into these schools otherwise. Athletics is about being surrounded by resources to not only ensure you graduate, but are supported and developed as an individual for life after sport. To give athletes the tools to be successful in life and to be a positive contributor to the community after graduation, that is what I want for all of our students at UIC. We want to help guide and direct them to success and personal growth.” On why she chose to return to college athletics, Williams explained the “real draw for me…is impact and influence. To serve in a role that can support athletes and hopefully bring more compassionate leadership to the space. To engage with campus, listen to our coaches, champion our athletes, drive revenue, support our staff and so much more. There is no doubt that college athletics is facing challenging times, but what we know is when met with adversity, athletics has always been resilient. We have always found a way around it, over it, or, goshdarnit, we’ve got to go through it.” Full press conference. (link)

Freshly minted Georgia Southern AD Chris Davis remarked during his introductory press conference yesterday that “I’ll sit here and tell you all right now I am not done growing. I think people forget about that just because they get the role, that’s why I said I’m going to be the same me. It’s gotten me to where I am today because I believe in being who you are, and being called. But you always have to know you’re in a growth mindset and being willing to assess and adjust. I think that’s where you keep the vulnerability and keep the ego out of the way, and stay about who you are.” Davis also said he wants to “continue the momentum. We've had unbelievable success over the last four-and-a-half years, and all the different factors of college athletics, and want to continue to drive that momentum, not miss a beat. And really be very people-centric. I'm a firm believer because of maybe my marketing background and external background of understanding how important brands are, brands are huge and the Georgia Southern logo is way bigger than us. It will be bigger than us. But the people behind the logo drive it." (link, link)

Oregon tops the first College Football Playoff ranking of the season, followed by Ohio State, Georgia, Miami (FL), Texas, Penn State, Tennessee, Indiana, BYU, Notre Dame, Alabama and Boise State in the top 12. On the outside looking in: SMU, Texas A&M, LSU, Ole Miss, Iowa State, Pittsburgh, Kansas State, Colorado, Washington State, Louisville, Clemson, Missouri and Army West Point. (link); The rankings prove brand names continue to get “preferential treatment,” according to Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde, who cites Indiana, BYU and SMU as getting a raw deal. One thing they have in common is starting the season outside the top 25, and Forde writes: “The slot voters in the AP and coaches polls who lack the imagination to reconfigure their ballots after actual games are played haven’t made up for that lapse – and the first CFP committee rankings largely mirror those.” Another common quality among the three is they are “not blueblood programs like the one-loss teams ahead of them: the Ohio State Buckeyes, Georgia Bulldogs, Texas Longhorns, Penn State Nittany Lions and Tennessee Volunteers. The Buckeyes and Bulldogs deserve to be ahead of Indiana and BYU, but not Texas, Penn State and Tennessee.” Forde also submits that the “committee seems to have followed its tacit marching orders from Tony Petitti and Greg Sankey…to make sure things go ‘incredibly well.’ … The good news is that things will change significantly over the next month. The infuriating news is that the usual biases seem to be in effect, favoring the big-name programs and holding back the up-and-comers.” (link)

College Football Playoff Executive Director Richard Clark and Michigan AD/CFP Selection Committee Chair Warde Manuel met with media members to discuss the rankings and said of Ohio State being slotted ahead of Georgia: “Ohio State's one loss on the road was against the No. 1 team, and they lost by one. They had an impressive win this past weekend at Penn State, and they have been very consistent. Top-5 defense. … So for us, it was the consistency. Georgia, very good team, great win against Texas, a win over Clemson. Consistency in terms of their offense. They've had some inconsistencies there, but they have great defense, and they're allowing only 17 points per game. It was a close analysis, but in the end we just felt that Ohio State was a more consistent performer at this point in time.” Manuel also explained Indiana’s position behind several one-loss teams: “Their strength of schedule was not very high in comparison to some others, but the way that they have played in those games and the dominance that they have shown in those games, winning by an average of 33 points a game, has been really impressive to the committee. So we couldn't ignore that. As it related to where they are ranked and how we saw them, even though strength of schedule is important, we also have watched those games. The only game they've been behind was last week against Michigan State by 10, and they came back and I believe went on a 47-point run to win that game. Very impressive team.” Asked whether Florida State’s situation last season disincentivizes teams to disclose injuries, Clark replied that committee members are “going to see, just like they did last year, they're going to see how a team performs with the loss of a key player, and they're going to evaluate them on that merit, and if they know that player is not coming back, they know that that's the team moving forward that they're going to rank for the future. Whether a team discloses their injuries or not, the committee is going to see how they perform without a player, and that's how they're going to evaluate them.” Full Q&A. (link)

Coach’s Wife Life’s Kristen Eargle sits down with TurnkeyZRG VP for Coaches, College & Performance Jocelyn Gates, who has previously served in various leadership roles at Ohio State, Boston College and other universities. Gates, who is also the wife of Missouri Men’s Basketball HC Dennis Gates, talks about balancing two high-profile careers in the same field, her path into college athletics, characteristics that stand out in interviews and lots more. Gates says her husband did not inform her about his decision to leave Cleveland State for Mizzou and explains she “appreciated not being in a position where I had to lie to people – which I would have done, I would’ve been like, ‘Hey, I don’t know where we’re going or what we’re doing – but I didn’t have to do that. It’s a fun story that now we’ll have forever.” Gates notes she’s okay with not discussing career decisions with her husband in part because “I think maybe working in college sports has allowed me to be flexible and fluid in that way. I’ve lived in so many different cities, I'm kind of at this point like, ‘Where you go, I go, and it's fine with me. I trust you and your career enough that you're going to make the best decision for our family as well.’” In regards to what stands out when interviewing coaches, Gates explains she likes when coaches talk about their families when asked to talk about themselves “because if you are a family person…that also means you're likely going to put your student-athletes first because you see them as a family. I think that then translates into how the parents view the coaches.” Other things that stand out in interviews to Gates are being unafraid to discuss one’s accomplishments and a willingness to work with the administration. “ADs want to hear that. They want to know that they’re going to have a partner and not someone that’s difficult to work with.” Lots more. (link)

New UCLA Chief Revenue Officer Daniel Cruz, who spent years working at Disney, to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “Working at Disney, I've been very fortunate to have access to some of the greatest IP in the world. I look at college sports, I look at UCLA as [some] of the top IP assets that are out there. … What I'm hoping to do is create a super authentic connection between the brands we want to work with and the student-athletes that we want to bring to the forefront to promote and showcase, so that our fans see that it's an authentic connection, and we're elevating ourselves the brands that we're working with and the student athletes as well.” Bruins AD Martin Jarmond: “What we're seeing is the commercialization of college sports, and we're entering a new agreement with our student athletes, a business relationship, helping them monetize their brand, create meaningful corporate partnerships, develop true NIL opportunities. I call it the ‘New Deal.’ There's got to be a value proposition for our student athletes that we have not considered before -- storytelling, branding, development, developing revenue opportunities. It's all about where this is going.” (link)

Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter explains that U.S. District Court Judge Clifton Corker’s order for a November 14 conference call with the attorneys general of Tennessee and Virginia and the NCAA is likely due to the parties asking to extend the NCAA’s deadline to answer the states’ complaint. The fourth such request was filed last week, and Winter notes: “If I had to guess, I think the NCAA is hoping the House settlement allows it to ultimately settle this case. And that there won’t be another federal court decision holding the NCAA’s athlete compensation/recruiting rules violate antitrust law.” (link)

Scout Founder/CEO Michael Haddix Jr. pens a guest post for SBJ about how institutions “need to adopt new structures and compliance measures” post-House. “As government-regulated institutions, universities cannot afford to perpetuate [the current] disorganized system without oversight or proper management. Schools must urgently establish a professional, standardized framework to manage this new responsibility, which includes developing the infrastructure necessary to pay multiple athletes multiple times per year in compliance with state and federal laws. … Additionally, schools must ensure financial transparency and implement compliance systems to efficiently track payments and manage contracts securely, with a focus on protecting athletes’ privacy and sensitive information.” Haddix also asserts it’s “crucial” to equip players with tools such as support for tax filing, financial planning, and saving for the future. Haddix goes on to note that “schools must establish clear guidelines” for how they will coexist with collectives. “The relationship between schools and these collectives must be formalized, ensuring that athletes benefit without creating conflicts or legal challenges. As NIL payments become more intertwined with the schools themselves, the days of loosely organized, donor-led collectives need to be over. … The $22M cap is just the beginning — schools must be prepared for this number to grow as the market evolves. In the meantime, clear operational frameworks, compliance systems, and athlete-focused resources are not just necessary — they’re critical.” (link)
