#10: More from D3.ticker’s roundtable with Alma AD Sarah Dehring, SUNY Cortland AD Mike Urtz and Wisconsin-La Crosse AD Kim Blum as the trio talk about planning for their Football programs’ future, in-season meetings with HCs and more. Dehring on her planning with HC Jason Couch: “Consistency in coaching is critical for a program's success. Jason Couch has done an unbelievable job creating the KILTstyle culture within the team, staff, alumni, and friends of the program. The institution is committed to keeping good people that have a strong, positive influence on Alma College. With that said, as an alum, Jason Couch is very committed to the current and future successes of Alma College. If Jason were to leave Alma College, he is committed to leaving it in a place where the next head coach can continue the success of the program.” Urtz, whose Red Dragons are currently undefeated coming off last year’s national championship, says: “I will do everything I can to keep who we have here, but I also need to keep my eyes open on who’s doing what at other campuses and keep my ear to the ground in the event we encounter a change here.” Throughout the season, Blum and Dehring both hold formal one-on-one meetings weekly, in addition to other informal conversations, to discuss issues, potential concerns and more. Urtz’s approach: “Informal and a few times a week. It’s more about a check-in and giving support. I like to check in with coaches on their time, not mine.” Check out the full piece on BOSCA. (link)

#5: The DIII Management Council has made two changes to the federated playing rules process: “a standard orientation for the Division III committee members involved in the process and the creation of a resource outlining policies and procedures.” The council will also create a subcommittee to provide insights and guidance on rules that may impact finances or a “fundamental Division III principle.” The group’s three points of emphasis for the process: “The process should include more Division III input. The process should encourage common rules. To the extent possible, the process should work within the current rules-making framework.” The council supported three membership proposals that would reduce the minimum full members for a multisport conference from seven to six, provide the Management Council authority to exempt DIII from certain playing rules and allow all multisport leagues to have a primary representative on the DIII SAAC. It also approved a Board of Governors’ recommendation to restructure DEI committees and task forces into one association-wide committee. More. (link)

#4: The Management Council also sunset the Athletic Trainer Working Group after its final recommendations were released. The core areas to address included culture and communication, workload, work-life balance and compensation. With compensation as the most common response for why trainers have left institutions, the working group recommends benchmarking salaries for the entire industry not just college athletics, aligning contract length with job descriptions, ensuring pay for administrative responsibilities is consistent with institutional policies and more. The second most common reason for departure is hours worked with two-thirds of ATs working over 40 hours a week. Work-life balance recommendations include managing time more effectively through established expectations, establishing appropriate hours for communication, supporting time off and alternatives to augment staff and more. On culture and communication, the group recommends having the highest-ranking AT staff member on the department’s senior leadership team, implementing a policy for changes to practice and game schedules to allow their input to be included and more. With the average AT staff responsible for 489 student-athletes and 59% of trainers responsible for more than 100 athletes, the working group suggests establishing boundaries for in-season and out-of-season activities and considering their increased workload when evaluating sport sponsorship and roster sizes among others. #3: Millikin Wrestling is settling into its new home at a former shopping center. HC Ryan Birt: “We’ve had recruits who have been all over to Olympic training centers and Division I facilities, and they didn’t have anything like this. They tell me that this is incredible. The guys love it, and to have a facility this size, for this size of school. This is DI quality. […] I always keep it in my head that it is a double-edged sword. Having something like this doesn't mean you just win. It helps you, but you still have to understand the philosophy of how to grow your athletes as men. It does help to have a better facility, but it also makes you understand as a coach that when you start getting the culture right, you have to bring in really good kids who know they want to be here.” (link)
