Embry-Riddle AD Rachel Burleson sits down with D2.ticker’s Anthony Grassi at the 2024 Women Leaders in Sports Convention to discuss her first 100 days in the chair and a lot more. Burleson’s process for her first 100 days was similar to when she took over at Franklin Pierce seven years ago, while she had a better idea of what would happen. “When I went in for my interview, I had a 100 day plan and I had that this is what's going to happen when I get the job, two weeks, after 30 days, after 60 days after and it's amazing how much of that was true, but also how much of that was not. […] I was able to give an assessment to our head coaches. to our administrative staff and to our student athletes – different assessments and then being able to put those together and find trends. I think what is so exciting about this institution is how much those things align. What the coaches say and what the administrative staff says and what the student-athletes say is very much the same. There's a lot of the same goals, a lot of the same challenges and so when you see those things align as best as they do, that gives me a clear path.” Asked about the ability for ERAU to be a model DII athletic department: “It's really about making sure that we have the right people in place, which we do we have really good people at Embry-Riddle, but people that believe in the Division II make-up, that we have appropriate staffing to make sure that we're giving the experiences to our student-athletes that they deserve and that they should have and then making sure that we are funding it and giving them the community outreach that they deserve.” More on BOSCA. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger breaks down the impact tomorrow’s general election could have on college sports, particularly as “federal policy looms larger than ever for college sports decision-makers on at least three fronts: (1) comprehensive congressional college sports legislation; (2) the interpretation and enforcement of Title IX as it relates to athlete revenue sharing; and (3) the debate over college athletes as employees.” Former LEAD1 CEO Tom McMIllen explains that if “Republicans take the Senate and Democrats take the House, it’s going to be difficult to get stuff done. If Republicans have a clean sweep, they could get all the agenda done. The more likely scenario is a split government and it’s going to require hard work to get a compromise done. I don’t see a clean sweep.” McMillen also says a Kamala Harris presidential victory could be a “big factor” in how Title IX is applied to revenue-sharing. “She would be taking office right when this whole [House] thing happens. I’ve talked to a lot of Democratic members. [The distribution method] is not sitting well with a lot of female members of Congress.” Meanwhile, Illinois professor Michael LeRoy notes Donald Trump has suggested publicly he would eliminate the Department of Education, at which point something would have to give between higher ed and college athletics. “We would be in a world of unprecedented chaos. College athletics could not avoid the fallout.” (link)

Education & Sports Law Group Partner Janet Judge joins AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown at the 2024 Women Leaders Convention to offer insights into the legal challenges facing today’s athletics landscape, including the House settlement, Johnson case and related NLRB cases, a recent NCAA study on online harassment and the Title IX implications from all the tumult. Judge notes that “football [is] quite important. The challenge is keeping the pipeline of Olympic sports, men’s and women’s, and not losing the diversity of sport as we move forward in the current legal landscape.” Judge goes on to point out that Title IX law does not pertain to employment relationships, which is another factor to be considered when thinking about whether student-athletes should be classified as employees. “So, it’s very complicated and really interesting. It is the epitome of a law school exam.” Judge also discusses the impact of today’s challenges on the way leaders think strategically, develop a team and build out their department: “We’ve operated as silos for a very long time. And we’re learning through the litigation that operating in that space without more broadly thinking about things that the institution is dealing with in the legal space has in some instances led to increased controls placed on young people that are coming to light. … So [I’m] spending a lot of time working with schools and also thinking more broadly about at the one time where all the legal pressures and social pressures may be leading some people in athletics to become even more insular, it’s absolutely the time where we need to not be insular.” More on ADU. NCAA Director of Inclusion Gretchen Miron joins Connect’s Stephanie Garcia Cichosz for a discussion about emerging sports, what’s gaining traction, and what sports are trending to gain approval to be added as the next NCAA women’s sport. Miron says women’s wrestling in particular has a lot of momentum and has “grown exponentially at the youth level. They are sanctioned as a high school sport for girls in 47 states and they have over 90 schools competing this year. They’ve just been growing rapidly and providing new opportunities to a really diverse set of student-athletes – people that maybe would not have gone to college but for this opportunity. Miron also notes acrobatics and tumbling, STUNT and triathlon “are all getting closer, which is super exciting and then we do still continue to see great momentum with women's rugby. Obviously, the bronze medal at the Olympics was a huge part of that. And then equestrian has some really storied programs that continue to provide great opportunities to those student-athletes.” Miron also points out that four of those six sports are Olympic and Paralympic sports. Lynn announces plans for new Baseball and Softball fields as part of the university’s campus master plan. Baseball HC Rudy Garbalosa: “I knew that a new baseball facility was in our 2025 master plan, but as President Ross spoke about the specifics and described how far planning on this project had come already, I was in shock. The new ballpark will be a game-changer for our student-athletes—it will greatly enhance the experience of our student-athletes and elevate our competitive level in one of the best baseball conferences in the nation.” (link)

Concordia-St. Paul releases the results from its mental health pilot program with Psychlytics. Results include: “Integrating the Psychlytics platform ensures equitable access to resources and aligns with NCAA guidelines, fostering a culture of holistic wellness and resilience. Participation rates ranged from 44% to 82%, reflecting high involvement from student-athletes. 41% of participants required additional assessments, underscoring the need for continuous mental health support. 100% of participants felt that the Psychlytics platform demonstrated the university's commitment to their mental well-being.” AD Regan McAthie: “Our goal is to create an environment where mental illness does not hinder an athlete's potential to make rational decisions both in and outside of competition. This program has proven that with the right support, athletes can thrive both mentally and physically. In addition, the ability to integrate and build a response mechanism utilizing our pre-existing campus mental health professionals is a win both from a campus efficiency and buy-in standpoint as well as financially.” (link)

Chico State Men’s Basketball HC Greg Clink resigns as the Wildcats are set to tip-off the season on Friday. Clink: “My wife and I made this decision a while ago that if I didn’t get the athletic director job, I was going to retire. And the reasoning, it’s really a family decision. […] The timing of all of this really revolved around the AD search, but it was important to me that I left the program in a great state. The American Enterprise Institute has ranked more than 400 current and former college presidents who served between 2000–01 and 2022–23 on how well they improved access, affordability, and student success over the course of their presidency. The rankings reveal that some presidents were “superstars” at improving access, affordability and student success. These presidents cut tuition costs, expanded access to low-income and racially underrepresented student groups, and increased graduation rates. But some presidents performed poorly in these areas, with a handful overseeing steep declines in graduation rates, affordability, and access. According to the AEI’s Cody Christensen, the “wide spread across the rankings suggests that higher education boards should begin using performance metrics to hold college presidents accountable for the changes in the outcomes of their students.” The report also found that 20.1% of all current presidents are female, 79.9% of all current presidents are white, 9.7% are black, 2.2% are Hispanic, 8.2% are Asian and the average length of tenure is 7.6 years. For all presidents during the course of the study, the average tenure was 7.95 years. Christensen: “The goal of these rankings is to provide high-level, publicly available information that highlights the best leaders, similar to how public information about private companies (such as stock prices, quarterly revenues, and growth projections) is used to judge the best leaders of private companies. The rankings also reveal which college presidents are consistently low performers, helping oversight organizations keep institutional leaders accountable.” Full study and rankings, which for DII leaders is topped by Missouri S&T Chancellor Mohammad Dehghani.
