Newly named Georgia Southern AD Chris Davis will earn $385K during the first year of his five-year deal, per CollegeAD, which reports his pay will increase by $8K each year before topping out at $417K. Davis can also earn $5K if the school receives its full Academic Unit Revenue Distribution from the Sun Belt, as well as $5K for each semester the department-wide GPA is 3.0 or greater. Other bonuses include $5K if the football team wins the Sun Belt or plays in a bowl game ($10K for a New Year’s Six game), and $2,500 for conference championships in any other sport (up to $10K). If he were to be let go without cause, Davis would be owed the remainder of his base pay. Should he leave, Davis would owe $200K; however, that figure drops to $50K if Davis leaves after President Kyle Marrero, provided Davis doesn’t follow Marrero to another institution. (link)

State University System of Florida Board of Governors members Jose Oliva last week said of the possibility of using taxpayer dollars for NIL. “I think this is the question of our time, and if we do not address it properly, there will be great inequity between the different universities. There will be great inequity in whatever benefit those programs have brought the universities, and what opportunities they bring, but ultimately, it will land squarely on the taxpayer, because this is a public university system competing with private university systems in that realm.” Florida Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz also weighed in: “It’s an arms race, let’s call it what it is. This could be affected by having other states decide. You have Alabama, or you have Tennessee, you have other places decide that they’re going to pour some state funds into this, and then it puts our universities at a disadvantage.” However, Diaz added: “Once you cross into that state funding, that’s a very dangerous place to be, and that arms race is not going to stop. It’s going to grow, so that’s where we should be looking at as a concern.” Board of Governors Vice Chair Alan Levine expressed a desire for ADs and other college sports stakeholders to “come and meet with us, educate us on the history, what the issue is, what they’re trying to confront, and how we as a board can respond to that and help.” (link)

Akron President R.J. Nemer indicates faculty & staff reductions are part of the university’s plan to decrease the $27M deficit he inherited when he entered office back in May: “Personnel reductions will be part of our natural evolution as an institution. Voluntary attrition will help us partially effect the desired changes, and we intend to prioritize that method as we address our ongoing deficits.” Per Signal Akron: “According to emails, Nemer plans to discuss recommendations for staffing reductions to the Board of Trustees in the spring. In an email, Nemer said he’s already begun budget reductions, starting with his own Office of the President. Nemer said annual expenditures in this department were recently reduced by $800,000. Nemer also said cuts have been made to the athletic department’s budget, but he did not specify a dollar amount. [...] Student enrollment has been falling at the university for years, though it has largely stabilized this fall. Overall, the university has a fall 2024 enrollment of 14,813 students, a slight drop from 14,995 the previous fall semester. In 2010, the university boasted a record 29,251 students.” (link)

Oklahoma State Football HC Mike Gundy yesterday commented on angry fans and critics after the Cowboys dropped to 3-6 on the season: “Unfortunately in life, most people are weak, and as soon as things start to not go as good as what they thought, they fall apart and they panic. And then they want to point the finger and blame other people. You see it in everyday life. People do it all the time. That’s why I refuse to watch the TV and watch the news because I get tired of people complaining and b—-ing about this and that versus just doing something about it and trying to figure out a way to make it better. … In most cases, the people that are negative and voicing their opinion are the same ones that can’t pay their own bills. They’re not taking care of themselves. They’re not taking care of their own family. They’re not taking care of their own job. But they have an obligation to speak out and complain about others because it makes them feel better. But then, in the end, when they go to bed at night, they’re the same failure that they were before they said anything negative about anybody else.” Gundy went on to remark that “what’s important for all the Oklahoma State fans to know is that we’re very aware of what’s going on, and at some point in life, we all have to put trust in somebody. And I think they need to trust that we have a good plan for what’s going on here in the big picture, and we have answers. Sometimes they’re not short-term. Sometimes they might be long-term answers.” (link)

With the medical retirements of NC State QB Grayson McCall and Michigan QB Jack Tuttle this season, CBS’ John Talty posits: “Two veteran quarterbacks retiring the same week is not a trend, but it does warrant closer examination of a hot-button topic that has drawn NFL headlines this season and could only get more complicated moving forward.” McCall tells Talty: "Every doctor has their own opinion but once you get to the four to five range, anything after that really isn't good. What I've learned from this last one is that the more you continue to get them, the chances of full recovery decrease." Concussion Legacy Foundation Co-Founder/Medical Director Dr. Robert Cantu: “The number is not crucial, but it is not insignificant. … We've been writing about this subject for a long time, but there is no unanimous agreement on when to retire that any organization has gotten behind. It's left to the individual opinion of physicians who see people and are well-intended, but have varying degrees of experience." Cantu says there are three main factors to consider in these situations: the number of concussions (least important), how close together the concussions are and the severity of the concussions (how long symptoms last is a good barometer). "If someone is at the stage of their career where each concussion seems to be lasting longer and longer before it clears, that's another risk that you'd think about telling somebody to think about retiring.” In regards to how NIL could push a player to keep playing at the expense of their long-term health, Forward Counsel NIL attorney Brian Davis advises: “Any plan needs to take into consideration a real possibility that this income-producing opportunity won't exist 13 months from now.” The priority should be making sure their college education is paid for. “Don't let football use you, use football to catapult yourself to more opportunities." JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher reports on the Pac-12’s media rights deal timeline: “There will be significant behind-the-scenes activity in the coming weeks, and I’ll report on it. So stay tuned. But on Friday, I was told by a source that it could be a few months before the conference gets clarity on the rights and membership decisions. The new-world Pac-12 has until July 1, 2026, to add at least one school that plays all sports. The conference can’t wait that long to make an addition, but that’s the deadline. New members will need transition time. I expect we’ll know by the spring. The Pac-12 is hyperfocused on the media rights piece right now. It’s why it didn’t blink when Grand Canyon University announced it was joining the Mountain West on Friday. The Pac-12 kicked the tires at GCU but didn’t covet the school like the [Mountain West] did.” Also from Canzano: “It will be interesting to see if the conference splits the TV rights into a football package and a basketball package with two different buyers rather than bundling them with one entity. The appetite of the potential partners will drive that decision.” On Boise State’s position: “Boise State does not have a unique or separate deal in the new-world Pac-12. However, according to campus sources, the postseason revenues in basketball and football will be distributed using a 50-50 performance-based formula for all Pac-12 members. … The schools that earn the postseason money keep 50%, and the other 50% is shared among the rest of the league. The schools that win big will reap the rewards.” (link)

Big Ten Network viewership is up 9% this football season thanks in part to the addition of the four West Coast schools, BTN President Francois McGillicuddy tells SBJ’s Mollie Cahillane, who adds: “Among BTN's five best audiences this season, Washington shows up twice. The Huskies' game against Eastern Michigan in Week 2 (1.1M viewers as part of a regionalized window alongside Michigan State-Maryland) has been its best audience on BTN to date, and the cable network's third-best game this season. At No. 4 this season for BTN is Washington-Indiana in Week 9 (1.07M).” BTN viewership is up 22% among men 18-49 and 17% among women 18-49, and McGillicuddy says: “What are really two key demos for advertisers, we’re just seeing very strong growth versus last year. Clearly, expansion is a part of it, and a fact that now we’ve got our games being paid attention to in the Los Angeles market and the Seattle market and the Portland market.” The network will also have the most women’s hoops inventory it’s ever had, and McGillicuddy explains: “We really want to try and do everything we can to build on the excitement from last year. Don't know whether we'll be able to continue at that level, but we think we can continue to grow interest in the sport.” (link)

Colorado has averaged 3.7M viewers for eight games across Fox, NBC, CBS and ESPN this football season, per SBJ’s Austin Karp, who reports that’s down around 49% from the same point last season; however, the “Buffs are up big (+424%) from the same point in 2022 season, when the team was averaging just 706K viewers during a one-win season (only four games across CBS, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU, as Pac-12 Nets had half of the Buffs’ games that season).” (link)

Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch says the loss of cable subscriptions slowed in the last quarter, which was “pleasing to see. We do believe that there is a sub floor we just don’t know where it is, but we do believe there is, there is a sub floor, and there will always be consumers and subscribers who will want a core package, and a core package that includes all of our brands.” While Fox has yet to enter the streaming space the way other networks have, Murdoch noted during yesterday’s earnings call that “on Venu, obviously we are awaiting our appeal of the injunction, and we’ll see where we go from there. We continue to believe Venu is a tremendous pro-consumer, pro-competition platform. We’re very excited to launch it when we have the ability to do so.” Murdoch also indicated advertising inventory for Super Bowl 59 is sold out at record pricing. (link); MoffettNathanson’s Robert Fishman describes Fox’s strategy to focus on news and sports as “one step ahead of the pack,” adding that he believes the company is undervalued. Meanwhile, Guggenheim’s Michael Morris raised his price target based in part on confidence in the company’s NFL deal. Puck’s John Ourand: “Of course, part of the appeal is tied up in both its composition of assets and the mishegas among the Murdoch heirs. ‘We continue to believe, however, that Fox’s collection of assets could best be utilized within a larger company, and see the company as a prime target for M&A. With control over Fox currently the subject of litigation with the estate, there may be a catalyst for change in the not-too-distant future.’” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger breaks down the impact tomorrow’s general election could have on college sports, particularly as “federal policy looms larger than ever for college sports decision-makers on at least three fronts: (1) comprehensive congressional college sports legislation; (2) the interpretation and enforcement of Title IX as it relates to athlete revenue sharing; and (3) the debate over college athletes as employees.” Former LEAD1 CEO Tom McMillen explains that if “Republicans take the Senate and Democrats take the House, it’s going to be difficult to get stuff done. If Republicans have a clean sweep, they could get all the agenda done. The more likely scenario is a split government and it’s going to require hard work to get a compromise done. I don’t see a clean sweep.” McMillen also says a Kamala Harris presidential victory could be a “big factor” in how Title IX is applied to revenue-sharing. “She would be taking office right when this whole [House] thing happens. I’ve talked to a lot of Democratic members. [The distribution method] is not sitting well with a lot of female members of Congress.” Meanwhile, Illinois professor Michael LeRoy notes Donald Trump has suggested publicly he would eliminate the Department of Education, at which point something would have to give between higher ed and college athletics. “We would be in a world of unprecedented chaos. College athletics could not avoid the fallout.” (link)

CBS’ Dennis Dodd asks why Michigan AD Warde Manuel would want to serve as chair of College Football Playoff Selection with so many other things on his plate, and Manuel explains: "I wanted to do it because I wanted to help college football. It was a way to give back to a game that I love and [that has] done a lot for me over my lifetime." Dodd notes it’s “no secret the selection process largely doesn't matter until it absolutely does on Selection Sunday, Dec. 9. Everything else is programming and a media mating dance to get the chair to say something he shouldn't.” One former committee member tells him: "As you know, different media people that are 'gotcha' people. They think about it in a way they're going to try to trap you. At the end of the day, you've got to do the best job you can." For his part, Manuel says he’s “talked to three of the past four chairs. None of them have ever said, 'They put me in a gotcha moment’ or they wanted to do that. At times there are tough questions; you just have to be open and answer them. Even being in the [meeting] room the last two years, I never felt that Rece [Davis of ESPN] or anyone was trying to get the chair or anyone in a 'gotcha' moment." Manuel, who is in his third year on the committee, also tells Dodd: "I've never seen someone say, 'I'm in the SEC. And as an SEC AD I've got to support this team.’ Normally you can tell [something is up]. What would happen in the room, you would see everybody talking about one way and somebody talking about it another way. You can discern they are really pushing for a particular team because they're in a conference. It's never happened. … I don't feel like when I speak about a Big Ten team and I speak highly of a Big Ten team that I'm advocating for them or not, it's just my perspective.” More. (link)

The Big 12 has circulated an NIL agreement template among members to “effectively spell out, among other things, terms, services, payments and the timing of payments to athletes,” according to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, who adds: “The template, which remains in its infancy and could undergo significant changes, was also created to allow each school to format it related to its varying needs, like, for example, whether athletes would sign over their NIL rights exclusively or non-exclusively to the university.” Portnoy also reports league officials are working to pare down the 20-page document, with one source indicating it’s unlikely to be short even once it’s trimmed. “You're just going to have to be like a real estate agent — ‘This means this. This means this, and this is what you're interested in.’” Another league source says more questions remain: “Are you going to commingle the scholarship agreement with the House payment? Are you going to keep those two separate? I don't think you're going to see institutions all do it one way or the other.” (link)

Florida’s First District Court of Appeals has denied the ACC’s attempt to halt Florida State’s lawsuit against the conference. Judge Joseph Lewis Jr.: “The ACC argues that under the principle of priority, the trial court should have stayed the FSU Board’s action pending the disposition of the ACC’s suit filed in North Carolina, which involves the same parties and the same issues. Because the trial court did not depart from the essential requirements of the law in denying the ACC’s motion to stay, we deny its certiorari petition on the merits.” (link); Full ruling. (link)

SBJ’s Bret McCormick profiles former AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco, who is part of SBJ’s 2024 Class of Champions: Pioneers & Innovators. Aresco’s career included stops at ESPN and CBS before taking over as Big East and, eventually, AAC commissioner, and former CBS Sports President Sean McManus says: “His reputation in the industry was flawless, universally respected, a thoughtful person and someone who, in my mind, didn’t have any hidden agendas. He just proved to me to be an invaluable resource.” SMU President Gerald Turner adds: “The strength of the American was down to two things. One, the schools, and two was Mike.” Aresco’s Big East tenure started with the near-immediate departure of Rutgers, whose former AD and current AAC Commissioner Tim Pernetti tells McCormick: “Put yourself in Mike’s shoes. He gets the job in August 2012, and two and a half months later, I called him to tell him we’re leaving the conference for the Big Ten. It was a tough call to make because of my relationship. But you know what his reaction was? He congratulated me.” McCormick also takes a look at Aresco’s campaign to make the AAC part of a so-called Power 6. The movement was appreciated by some but grew tiresome to others, including Turner, who says: “It was a little annoying for both ends of the spectrum. It was clear we weren’t going to knock down the whole wall between the G5 and the P5. And besides that, there were four or five of us [in the AAC] that really thought our destiny was in the P5.” Former College Football Playoff Executive Director Bill Hancock adds that even though it was “unlikely there would ever be a P6…Mike didn’t give up. He was so loyal to his schools, and that’s a point in his favor.” (link); McCormick also profiles Aresco’s CBS days, where he joined McManus and then-EVP Tony Petitti in a control room to determine when March Madness games should be switched. Aresco: “I don’t think there was anything I ever did that was as intense as those first two days of the tournament.” McManus adds: “With a minute to go and with a certain team up 11 points, Mike would say, ‘Well, we’ve gotten this team through to the next round,’ and I’d say, ‘Mike, stop jinxing us. Relax. Calm down. Do not put this in the win column yet.’ And you can imagine sitting next to him 13, 14 hours during those first two days. There was a lot of camaraderie, a lot of unhealthy food, and a lot of tension that just never ceased.” More. (link, link)

Deals, Deals, Deals…
+ The state of Hawaii has approved the Aloha Halawa District Partners (AHDP) as the preferred development partner for the 98-acre New Aloha Stadium Entertainment District (NASED). SBJ’s Bret McCormick: “The selection of the AHDP bid team — which includes Cordish Companies, Populous, and AECOM Hunt — moves the process into an eight-month diligence and discussion phase. It is possible that the state and AHDP emerge from that without a deal to move forward for the redevelopment of the site. … If the next step proceeds as the state and AHDP hope, then necessary agreements should be executed by June 2025. The new Aloha Stadium is projected to open in time for the University of Hawaii’s 2028 football season.” (link)
