#9: Pepperdine AD Tanner Gardner talks about the impact of the new Mountain at Mullin Park Arena and says: “Schools used to negatively recruit against us. You don’t want to go to Pepperdine. They only have one gym. You won’t even have time to practice. You can’t get baskets up outside of practice.’ They can’t do that anymore. … The Mountain, in and of itself, is transformational. It’s a piece of a bigger story about how we’re really working to transform Pepperdine Athletics from what’s already a really good program into a program that’s great and sustains that greatness.” It remains to be seen what will become of Firestone Fieldhouse, which has served as home for several Waves indoor teams since 1972, but Gardner notes: “You think about a historic facility, a Firestone Fieldhouse, that is just not that big moving to what will be a state-of-the-art facility, this difference cannot be more stark. Pepperdine sets the standard in many areas, and we will be setting the standard arenas once The Mountain opens.” Gardner goes on to point out that “from a naming perspective, we’ll have an ability to host a lot of really neat events there, which, at many colleges, are great sources of revenue. Hosting concerts, hosting speakers, hosting conferences, these are all great sources of revenue and great sources of publicity for Pepperdine.” The Mountain is slated to open by late 2026. (link)

#5: As athletic departments prepare themselves for a post-House settlement landscape, Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports some schools have “eliminated roster spots and, for some, scholarship offers that they were once promised. Meanwhile, several dozen current college athletes are being notified that they are no longer part of their teams – some of the notifications arriving after the fall semester even began.” Dellenger indicates the new roster caps will result in “thousands of lost roster spots for mostly walk-on athletes and those on partial scholarship — a consequence that, while previously reported by Yahoo Sports, has now sparked outrage from hundreds of parents of athletes or prospective athletes whose spots have been or will soon be eliminated. Nearly 20,000 parents and athletes are members of a Facebook page related to the issue, and they are mobilizing in what is now a public fight against the new policies, said Tom Wiegand, an attorney with MoloLamken, a national firm based in New York, Washington D.C. and Chicago. The firm is in the process of authoring an objection to the settlement over the roster limits.” Dellenger goes on to report that “at one SEC school, eight track and field runners were cut or pushed out over the summer. One power conference program released all of their 2025 men’s swimming commitments. And in football, it is estimated that more than 1,500 walk-on players — roughly 20-30 per team — will see their spots cut. In all, the 68 power conference schools are expected to eliminate at least 3,000 roster positions as administrators work to adhere to new roster limitations, reallocate resources from lower-tier to revenue-generating sports, and balance men and women opportunities to comply with the federal Title IX law.” College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America Executive Director Samantha Barany: “Someone might say we are taking better care of our student-athletes with the settlement. I’d say we are taking better care of a percentage of our student-athletes.” Lots more. (link)

#4: The NCAA has distributed to members its Q&A regarding the House settlement. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger: “Nothing really significantly new here, but this item is notable.
