During his investiture address today, Ohio State President Ted Carter spoke about the Buckeyes’ plans for the future in a revenue-sharing world. “When I hired Ross Bjork, he and I decided right away that we would retain all 36 Division I sports programs. It's important we have over 1,000 student-athletes. It's important for our Olympic sports that we do this. Not many other schools are going to be able to do this and we will remain financially self-sufficient. That's no small order because we're gonna be sharing a fair bit of our revenue with our student-athletes. And finally, we are going to retain scholarships for all 36 Division I sports. We will determine how best to do that. There's a lot of big decisions to be made, but these decisions will help shape the conversation about how we can make sure that our student-athletes remain students first.” Further: “The future of shared revenue, Name, Image and Likeness, the transfer portal for an institution that is the largest athletic department of any major university in the country with 36 Division I programs, we need to be a leader. We need to be a voice in protecting the student-athlete model for collegiate athletics.” (link, link - Full address)

In an email to fans, Oregon AD Rob Mullens explains the Ducks will need to make “strategic decisions” to provide the necessary resources post-House. He points out that if UO funds scholarships for all student-athletes per new roster limits, it would add $14-15M expenses to the Ducks’ operating budget on top of the $20M in revenue-sharing. “Every dollar generated by Oregon athletics is reinvested directly into supporting the success of the 20 athletic programs and roughly 500 student-athletes. … We have always prioritized fiscal responsibility within Oregon Athletics and will continue to do so…however, this new model will require that we examine all possible revenue streams and cost-containment strategies to sustain and enhance our programs.” Full email. Nebraska AD Troy Dannen tells HuskerOnline: "I will tell you the only thing – the only thing that’s absolute – that I've told our coaches is we're not cutting scholarships and we’re not cutting sports. For us, generating additional revenue and reallocating our existing expenses, we’ve got to look. We're a $200 million operation. Do we really need to be spending $200M on what we do? Or is there a better way to allocate? Take a piece of that money and allocate it toward this new expense vs. what we’ve been doing." Dannen also expects to unveil the entire Memorial Stadium renovation project during the first quarter of 2025. “I think we’ve got a pretty good handle on design, getting a pretty good handle on the financial model, and once those two things intersect, hopefully by Thanksgiving I'll have everything in my hands. … Probably post-[20]26 the south end comes down and then you rebuild half of it. There is no way to do this without taking the entire south end down. Really the south end may not be the revenue generator in this, but structurally and physically, it is the domino that makes everything else happen.” Dannen goes on to say he’s been careful not to publicly comment too much on the House settlement. “I think those who are speaking publicly are out over their skis a little bit. There are 100 questions I don’t have answers for. And I'll just give you one right off the top: the roster of 105 in football. Is that 105, 365 days a year? Is it 105 during the football season? Or is it some hybrid of it? Right now we're carrying 145, 150 through spring ball, through summer, and we cut to 120 in camp, and then after the first game we go back to 150. So what does this model look like? … We haven't committed final numbers to our coaches. I've started to talk to them conceptually. I've met with every coach from rifle and bowling to football just about how this model can play out in their benefit, trying to get their creative juices flowing.” Full podcast. (link)

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled in favor of Grand Canyon, ruling the U.S. Department of Education “acted unlawfully by applying the incorrect legal standard in determining GCU’s nonprofit status,” and sent the case back to the DOE. From GCU: “In light of the Ninth Circuit’s ruling, the IRS 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status and independent valuations, we are hopeful that the Department will act in good faith and render a quick decision recognizing the university’s nonprofit status.” (link)

Florida Men’s Basketball HC Todd Golden has been accused by an undefined number of women for sexual harassment and stalking, according to Title IX documents obtained by The Alligator student newspaper’s Jack Meyer and Max Tucker. “The claims regarding sexual harassment, which could also include sexual exploitation, cited sending photos and videos of his genitalia while traveling for UF, unwanted sexual advances on Instagram, requesting sexual favors, and various occasions of stalking. There was allegedly more than one occasion in which Golden was taking photos of women walking or driving and sending those pictures to the subjects involved. Various stalking incidents also included Golden showing up to locations where he knew the women would be.” Two women who were allegedly victimized claim UF Special Assistant Ralphie Ferrari and UF Director of Basketball Strategy and Analytics Jonathan Safir were complicit in Golden’s misconduct and had knowledge of it, although neither of the men were mentioned in the Title IX complaint. The men’s basketball coaching staff didn’t respond in time for publication. More. (link)

USA Today’s Dan Wolken unpacks what Florida’s decision to retain Football HC Billy Napier portends for the Gators, and for the sport itself, and notes the “easy explanation for Florida giving Napier one more shot is money, as he’d be owed $26.7M if fired at the end of this season. But that probably isn’t the full story. Florida is a big, rich SEC school that has paid big buyouts before and will pay them again. If Texas A&M could come up with $75M to cut ties with Jimbo Fisher last year, Florida could undoubtedly make the math work on $26.7M if it really wanted to. It’s also possible [Gators AD Scott] Stricklin’s decision is strategically self-serving. After hiring, then firing Dan Mullen, a decisive miss on a second football coach would probably be the end of Stricklin's tenure as well. But Florida doesn't have a permanent president at the moment and isn’t in a great position to make an athletics director change. If Napier can take advantage of this opportunity, Stricklin may go from the chopping block to a contract extension under a new president.” Wolken goes on to point out that several non-UF factors, such as the timing of the transfer portal, the economics of the House settlement and the expansion of the College Football Playoff, also likely play into the decision to retain Napier. “Maybe it won’t work and we’ll be back here in a year saying that Florida should have gone ahead and made the change. Had [former Gators AD Jeremy] Foley held onto [former Football HC Ron] Zook one more year, he’d have missed out on hiring Urban Meyer and winning a couple national championships. But we’re not living in Foley’s world anymore.” (link)

Idaho State has installed Daktronics video boards at the ICCU Dome, Miller Ranch Stadium and Reed Gym. At the ICCU Dome, a large end-wall video display was installed to inform and entertain fans at Bengals football games and other university events. The display measures roughly 15.5 feet high by 85 feet wide. At Miller Ranch Stadium, which is the home of the Bengals softball team, a new outfield display was installed in April 2024, making it the only softball facility in the Big Sky to have a video board. The display measures approximately 8.5 feet high by 24 feet. For basketball and other university events held at Reed Gym, two end wall video displays were installed. Each display measures nearly 7 feet high by 24 feet wide. (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker sat down with Hoops HQ headliner Seth Davis as the college basketball seasons gets underway, says he spends 40 to 50 percent of his time on legal issues, points to what comes next on the legal front, “Once we get the settlement in place, we’ll really be looking for some way to deal with the 35-plus states that have different standards, which makes it hard to create a level playing field. The other thing is the employment issue. When I talk to people in Congress, it always sounded to me like the employment piece was more about a means to an end as opposed to an end. One of the things we’ve tried to do with this settlement is create a mechanism that makes it possible for schools with the resources, with the high resources, to be able to support and compensate student-athletes for their time and their participation in their name, image and likeness. That was the primary objective of a lot of those conversations.” Also of note from Baker: “I think the whole question about how and where enforcement takes place and what it looks like is going to go through a massive reconsideration. There’s a lot of architecture that’s associated with the current model that, just by definition, goes away the minute this new settlement becomes an injunction. But I don’t disagree with you. I think the enforcement piece is absolutely up for grabs in terms of what makes the most sense going forward.” How about March Madness expansion? “I think there’s a real opportunity there to do something modest. Remember, the calendar is really defined, right? We have to finish before the Masters, and we can’t start until after the conference tournaments are over. So there’s not a lot of extra days in there. And I think for both the men’s and the women’s tournament, whatever we do here would have to be done within the frame that’s already available. Do I think it’s possible to come up with something where we could make this work? I think it certainly is possible. We’re working on it, but I don’t think you’re going to see dramatic expansion.” Lots more from Davis & Baker. (link)

Arizona AD Desireé Reed-Francois has “almost totally rebuilt the UA’s departmental structure,” according to the Arizona Daily Star’s Greg Hansen, who notes the restructuring includes a seven-person staff for the "purpose of corporate sponsorships, stadium naming rights and brand management." Hansen goes on to posit that the rebuild suggests the administrative model used by previous Arizona ADs was either “inefficient or outdated, or both, and that the UA needed new blood.” Moving forward, Reed-Francois is now "advertising three key positions for her financial staff." With all of the changes being made by Reed-Francois, Arizona “now sounds more like a Power 4 athletic department of the 2020s, rather than the good-old-boy network of a previous generation, drowning in debt and doing little about it.” More from Hansen. (link) The Wildcats have posted all three of those positions on CollegeSports.jobs. (link)

Meanwhile, Arizona has trimmed its campus budget shortfall from $177M last year to $65M “largely through restrictions on hiring, procurement and capital projects and across-the-board cuts that included hundreds of layoffs but managed to avoid severe reductions in any academic departments,” according to Inside Higher Ed’s Josh Moody. Interim CFO/former Arizona Board of Regents Chair John Arnold explains the initial work on the deficit focused on improving financial reporting. “Once we had a good understanding of what the nature of the problem was, we systematically worked with our deans, our department heads and other senior leaders in the university to identify areas where they could make some changes in their spending. … We asked everybody to come in with a plan to reduce spending between 5% and 10% , and the president’s office led the way with that. So we were able to work with those individual decision-makers to come up with the right budget cuts for their programs.” While the athletic department was “largely spared the ax,” Arnold tells Moody it is now going through a restructuring and incurring additional costs as a result of UA’s move from the Pac-12 to the Big 12. As a result of the changes, he expects more savings in the future. (link)

Temple AD Arthur Johnson acknowledged during a panel discussion hosted by the Temple Alumni Office that he did not do enough to build an NIL infrastructure when it became legal in 2021. “We gotta do better. I’ll admit and I said to people, I didn’t do enough on the front end to really push because of all of the uncertainty, the uncertainty with where the rules were, how it was going to work, the lawsuits have just continued to come. While it hasn’t gone like we wanted to go, [TUFF FUND Executive Director] Andy [Carl] has done a great job finding our niche and we still need that support.” Carl remarked during the event that “we came up with a concept of The TUFF Fund where it was a NIL collective that we started to see popping up all over the place, but we knew that we didn’t want to get into the pay-to-play space. So we tried to utilize our student-athletes and their name, image and likeness to further initiatives that we were really passionate about and some of our alumni and our fans and alumni were passionate about that maybe we couldn’t go about performing.” Owls Executive Assoc. AD/Chief of Staff Justin Miller also weighed in: “Our vision for Temple Athletics is to cultivate the greatness within our student-athletes as they pursue academic, athletic, personal and professional life. We need to work with and we’re working hard to work with the NIL space in still staying true to that. But it’s really important, as this world is evolving and constantly evolving, that we stay nimble and we’re able to respond to the changes in the marketplace.” (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde writes on alternative industry models that are grabbing headlines, but here’s what really matters: “Industry sources tell Sports Illustrated they believe the SEC and broadcast partner ESPN are ‘honing in on’ talks that would alter the conference’s scheduling while potentially enhancing its media-rights revenue. Specifically, the alleged plan revolves around an SEC–Big Ten scheduling agreement that would produce annual matchups between the two leagues. The presumptive accompanying piece of such a move would be the Big Ten and broadcast partner Fox sharing some of that game inventory and producing more money for that conference as well.” One source tells Forde: “The timing seems to indicate they’re trying real hard to get extensions done soon. I would say even before the end of the year.” However, another close to ESPN says there’s “no truth” to the potential renegotiation. More from sources: “I think much of the timing, and now seemingly urgency, has likely arisen over the last couple of months since groups like College Sports Tomorrow have gotten out there, as well as private equity groups like Smash Capital and others looking to invest in the college space. If you’re the two main conferences and you’re the media companies, the sooner you could extend your media deals and cut off any centralized approach to football, the better.” (link)

Kansas will debut the $50M in renovations undertaken at Phog Allen Fieldhouse when the Jayhawks host North Carolina tonight. In addition to previously reported Daktronics video board additions, SBJ’s Bret McCormick points out: “Multistudio designed several premium areas for alums and key stakeholders, including the new Banners Pub that offers lower-tier donors a vibrant gathering space with food and drink options. Existing donor spaces were also modernized, including the Naismith Room, and 1,100 chairbacks were added to the seating bowl. The renovation – built by Turner Construction – incorporated new wayfinding throughout expanded concourses that united the historic facility with the updated renovation. The bigger concourses feature new concessions, as well as interactive seating zones, lounges, and merchandise retail locations. Tributes to KU’s basketball history include glass walls etched with the fieldhouse’s original blueprints and graphics showcasing the evolution of the Jayhawk mascot.” (link)

Federal Bankruptcy Judge Michael Romero heard arguments yesterday in the bankruptcy case of Colorado Football student-athlete Shilo Sanders but issued no rulings. Romero to Sanders’ attorney: “If I deny the motion for summary judgment and we have a trial, don’t you agree it’s only on the mental state that existed at the time? Is that the only issue I would have before me? I’m not going to try the whole bloomin’ thing again.” Sanders, who filed for bankruptcy in October 2023 after being sued for $11M+ by a security guard with whom he had an altercation, so far has turned over about $210K to the bankruptcy estate along with his tax returns, bank statements and copies of endorsement deals. San Diego State is offering two complimentary tickets to season-ticket holders for upcoming football matchups against Air Force and New Mexico. The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Kirk Kenney notes the promotion "parallels an early push to get season-ticket holders to renew for the 2025 season." As prices for next season will remain the same as this season, Kenney notes new season-ticket holders would also be “on the hook for a ‘stadium enhancement gift’” that ranges from $100 to $1,500, depending on the season ticket package. Snapdragon Stadium has averaged 59% capacity for football games since it opened two-plus years ago. (link)

The NWSL and its players’ union agreed to a new collective bargaining agreement in August that abolished its draft, making all amateur players true free agents. (link)

Clemson became the first college baseball team to take on the Harlem Globetrotter-esque Savannah Bananas in a tilt last night that included plenty of dancing, trick plays & Tigers HC Eric Bakich ripping his jersey off. More importantly from Bakich: “If you’re a recruit, we do fun stuff like this all the time. Come to Clemson, baby. Nobody else is doing this. We're the first. That’s a win all by itself. [...] If we're gonna win a national championship, we have to be comfortable in environments like this.” (link, link, link)

Under Armour’s revenue for the quarter fell 11% to $1.4B, which was in line with company expectations. Additionally, the company reported an increase in gross margin to nearly 50% – “meaningfully ahead” of Wall Street’s expectation of 48.2%, according to a Truist note. UA subsequently lifted its guidance for the year and now projects an operating loss of $176M to $196M, compared with a prior forecast of $220M to $240M, per Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich. CEO Kevin Plank: “Our second quarter fiscal 2025 performance demonstrates that our strategy to reconstitute the Under Armour brand and establish a more premium position in the marketplace is gaining traction.” (link)
