NCAA President Charlie Baker sat down with Hoops HQ headliner Seth Davis as the college basketball seasons gets underway, says he spends 40 to 50 percent of his time on legal issues, points to what comes next on the legal front, “Once we get the settlement in place, we’ll really be looking for some way to deal with the 35-plus states that have different standards, which makes it hard to create a level playing field. The other thing is the employment issue. When I talk to people in Congress, it always sounded to me like the employment piece was more about a means to an end as opposed to an end. One of the things we’ve tried to do with this settlement is create a mechanism that makes it possible for schools with the resources, with the high resources, to be able to support and compensate student-athletes for their time and their participation in their name, image and likeness. That was the primary objective of a lot of those conversations.” Also of note from Baker: “I think the whole question about how and where enforcement takes place and what it looks like is going to go through a massive reconsideration. There’s a lot of architecture that’s associated with the current model that, just by definition, goes away the minute this new settlement becomes an injunction. But I don’t disagree with you. I think the enforcement piece is absolutely up for grabs in terms of what makes the most sense going forward.” Lots more from Davis & Baker. (link)

Johnson C. Smith AD Denisha Hendricks joins D2.ticker’s Anthony Grassi from the 2024 Women Leaders in Sports Convention about her first 90 days returning to lead the Bulls, capitalizing on success and more. After 15 years away from JCSU, Hendricks on her focus during her first few months: “We have an awesome new president in President Valerie Kinloch and her theme, her vision for us is a new era of excellence, which is where she sees Johnson C. Smith. […] One of the things that I say in athletics is that we have to reestablish the culture of champions within the new era of excellence because Johnson C. Smith has a rich history which I happened to be a part of when I was here before. […] There's a lot of rich history there so when you talk about returning to that, I understand what it was and what it felt like at that time and so I can certainly speak from a different place because I still have the t-shirts. So I'm really excited to be able to return and because even though I'm not a Smith alum, but I was there doing the height of a lot of success. So to be able to bring that back as we reestablish and restructure the athletic department and done a lot of assessment, made some changes and I'm sure we'll make some more as we go through this year. It's my job to position the athletic department to put us in the best place so that our coaches and our student-athletes can be as successful as they choose to be.” Asked about her plans for JCSU early in her tenure: “This has really been back to basics. Let's start. How do we come together, what are we doing, even down to purchasing t-shirts for every student-athlete that just say JCSU Athletics with the bull on it, so when we say wear white, wear gold, wear blue, you have something to wear. You may have something that says bowling or football or basketball or whatever but now you have something because this we're one athletic department. So instilling that culture piece so that even though the students do well with supporting each other, as a staff we have to do well in supporting each other.” Check out the full conversation on BOSCA.
