Akron AD Charles Guthrie will depart the Zips after more than three years in the chair. Guthrie wrote on X: "Today is bittersweet but, after extensive soul-searching and a lot of prayer, we have decided that it is in the best interest of both my UA family and my own family to part now. We have treasured our time and eagerly look forward to our next chapter." (link)

Vanderbilt Quarterback Diego Pavia has sued the NCAA “arguing that because the governing body counts junior college seasons towards NCAA eligibility and athletes cannot redshirt after they have played four years, NCAA rules violate antitrust law,” per On3’s Pete Nakos. As you may know, Pavia spent his first two years of college at New Mexico Military Institute, before moving on to New Mexico State & then transferring to Vanderbilt. From the complaint: “Specifically, the JUCO Eligibility Bylaws limit athletes who begin their college careers at junior colleges to only two or three seasons of NCAA Division I football, as opposed to the four seasons of competition (and NIL Compensation opportunities) available to all other NCAA Division I football players.” (link, link - full filing)

Defendants in the Brantmeier v. NCAA case have revised its covered class to only Tennis student-athletes after being denied a preliminary injunction last month. Boise State professor Sam Ehrlich notes additional changes: “Adds Texas tennis player Maya Joint as a representative plaintiff; and, now seeks money damages, not just injunctive relief.” (link)

Two former Kentucky Swim student-athletes who are suing the university have dropped four claims: “In an agreed order filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Lexington, but not yet signed by Judge Karen Caldwell, the plaintiffs agreed to drop claims of one count of failure to train and supervise; one count of negligence; and two counts of vicarious liability for battery. UK would remain a defendant in the suit for one count of sex harassment in violation of Title IX, a federal civil rights law, and one count of sex discrimination in violation of the Kentucky Civil Rights Act. The plaintiffs’ claims against (former Swim HC Lars) Jorgensen and (current UK AD Mitch) Barnhart would not be affected by the agreed order.” UK AVP/Chief Communications Officer Jay Blanton: “We are pleased that the plaintiffs agreed with the university’s contention that it should be removed from several counts of this litigation, under both the U.S. Constitution and state law. And we look forward to prevailing on the other claims, including those against Director Barnhart.” (link)

According to new documents filed in their Title IX complaint, Oregon beach volleyball student-athletes claim former Ducks SWA Lisa Peterson “told us [...] all the benefits that we had been promised were put on hold until the pandemic was over. Administrator Peterson downplayed or ignored our reports of being denied basic support, gear, facilities, equipment, and financial aid. She told us that we were lucky to be playing and that if we continued to complain, the season would be canceled.” Peterson, who has since left UO and now works for the Big 12 as VP of Olympic Competition, was replaced by Valerie Johnson, who, per plaintiff Ashley Schroeder, “had an almost scolding tone and said that Title IX does not require equality in sports. She demanded that individual players ‘raise your hand if you are really interested in this Title IX stuff.’ … It felt almost threatening, as though she was trying to identify and single out who the troublemakers were.” More, including a response from Ducks Senior Assoc. AD for Communications Jimmy Stanton: “Like other claims alleged in the Complaint, the statements alleged ... are false and UO denies them. Ms. Peterson and Ms. Johnson are and have always been stalwart Title IX champions. Our previously filed answer outlines UO’s denials of plaintiffs’ allegations. We will address the new allegations in the court proceedings as well.” (link)

Update from the NCAA: “At the request of the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision Oversight Committee, the NCAA staff issued a blanket waiver suspending the school limit on the number of official recruiting visits available to FBS members for hosting football prospective student-athletes. The waiver is effective immediately and is in place for football's current recruiting cycle (April 1, 2024, through March 31, 2025).” (link)

USF held its ground breaking ceremony for its new on-campus football stadium Friday, at which Board of Trustees chairman Will Weatherford reflected on the day three years prior when the Bulls broke ground on the football team’s indoor practice facility: “But I’m going to let everybody in on a little bit of a secret. In that moment, when we made that announcement, we had zero plans to actually build a football stadium. In fact, I only called our team a few days earlier and told them I planned to announce at the indoor practice facility groundbreaking that we’re going to build a stadium. And I have to say, sometimes in life, you just have to speak things into existence. And I’m proud of this university for speaking this into existence, because we knew if we said we would do it, if the Bulls put their name on it, we knew we would stand up and deliver. And we have.” On the likely increase of the overall cost from the initial $340M estimate and the looming revenue sharing: “We’re ready for whatever’s coming. I absolutely think there will be enough money. Wherever college athletics goes, we’re going to be at the top tier.” (link)

During October’s Horizon League Board of Directors meeting in Chicago, the group decided on the addition of women’s basketball excellence and performance funds and the continuation of similar funds on the men’s side. The women’s performance fund is contingent on a January NCAA vote creating the NCAA Women’s Basketball Unit. Commissioner Julie Roe Lach: “Due to the tremendous leadership of our Board, commitment to excellence by our leaders on campuses and competitive and co-curricular accomplishments of our student-athletes, the Horizon League will continue to be innovative and forward-thinking which this significant and first-of-its-kind financial initiative defines.” (link)

Not sure we’ve ever seen something like this before: Auburn Men’s Basketball’s private flight to Houston for today’s game against the Cougars had to turn around because of a “scuffle” between student-athletes. Arizona State AD Graham Rossini talks about player retention on the Burns & Gambo Show and explains: “We are in a situation where the Sun Angels Collective continues to be a huge part of our success in NIL and we are lucky to have tremendous people involved in the collective. We’re going into that part of the year where the (transfer) portal is going to be open again and we want to make sure that these kids understand there’s more than just NIL. We’ve got to broaden the horizon for our athletes to understand you can’t be looking short-term season to season. You need to be looking at the totality of what it’s like to be a part of the ASU family, what’s it like to be in here in the Valley and how that can pay dividends the rest of your life.” (link)

College Football kickers have had a banner year, per ESPN’s David Hale: “Twenty years ago, college kickers connected on just 76% of field goals of 40 yards or less. This year, they're hitting 87.5%. From 2004 through 2020, kickers made only about 55% of tries beyond 40 yards. Since 2021, that rate is better than 60%, including 62.2% in 2024. And prior to 2021, kickers had never made more than 96 field goals of 50 yards or more in a season. They're on pace for 193 this year. Kickers have already hit 129 50-yarders through Week 10, just one shy of last year's total across FBS.” Kohl's Professional Camps Director Jamie Kohl points to “...as teams have added analysts, assistant coaches and strength staff who specialize in kicking, the workouts have become tailored for maximizing the skills of kickers -- giving the position the same type of precise training receivers or linebackers get.” A bit more from Hale: “Interestingly, the new era of kicking has dovetailed with the rise of analytics. A decade ago, fourth down was owned by the kickers and punters, but the influx of hard data convinced coaches to reevaluate the risk-reward balance of running an offensive play instead. Indeed, the number of fourth-down conversion attempts increased by 60% from 2004 to 2023. That would, in theory, lead to fewer long kicks, but in fact, the opposite has been true. This year, college kickers are on pace to attempt 368 kicks of 50 yards or more -- nearly double the amount they tried just 15 years ago.” (link)

During his investiture address today, Ohio State President Ted Carter spoke about the Buckeyes’ plans for the future in a revenue-sharing world. “When I hired Ross Bjork, he and I decided right away that we would retain all 36 Division I sports programs. It's important we have over 1,000 student-athletes. It's important for our Olympic sports that we do this. Not many other schools are going to be able to do this and we will remain financially self-sufficient. That's no small order because we're gonna be sharing a fair bit of our revenue with our student-athletes. And finally, we are going to retain scholarships for all 36 Division I sports. We will determine how best to do that. There's a lot of big decisions to be made, but these decisions will help shape the conversation about how we can make sure that our student-athletes remain students first.” Further: “The future of shared revenue, Name, Image and Likeness, the transfer portal for an institution that is the largest athletic department of any major university in the country with 36 Division I programs, we need to be a leader. We need to be a voice in protecting the student-athlete model for collegiate athletics.” (link, link - Full address)

In an email to fans, Oregon AD Rob Mullens explains the Ducks will need to make “strategic decisions” to provide the necessary resources post-House. He points out that if UO funds scholarships for all student-athletes per new roster limits, it would add $14-15M expenses to the Ducks’ operating budget on top of the $20M in revenue-sharing. “Every dollar generated by Oregon athletics is reinvested directly into supporting the success of the 20 athletic programs and roughly 500 student-athletes. … We have always prioritized fiscal responsibility within Oregon Athletics and will continue to do so…however, this new model will require that we examine all possible revenue streams and cost-containment strategies to sustain and enhance our programs.” Full email. Nebraska AD Troy Dannen tells HuskerOnline: "I will tell you the only thing – the only thing that’s absolute – that I've told our coaches is we're not cutting scholarships and we’re not cutting sports. For us, generating additional revenue and reallocating our existing expenses, we’ve got to look. We're a $200 million operation. Do we really need to be spending $200M on what we do? Or is there a better way to allocate? Take a piece of that money and allocate it toward this new expense vs. what we’ve been doing." Dannen also expects to unveil the entire Memorial Stadium renovation project during the first quarter of 2025. “I think we’ve got a pretty good handle on design, getting a pretty good handle on the financial model, and once those two things intersect, hopefully by Thanksgiving I'll have everything in my hands. … Probably post-[20]26 the south end comes down and then you rebuild half of it. There is no way to do this without taking the entire south end down. Really the south end may not be the revenue generator in this, but structurally and physically, it is the domino that makes everything else happen.” Dannen goes on to say he’s been careful not to publicly comment too much on the House settlement. “I think those who are speaking publicly are out over their skis a little bit. There are 100 questions I don’t have answers for. And I'll just give you one right off the top: the roster of 105 in football. Is that 105, 365 days a year? Is it 105 during the football season? Or is it some hybrid of it? Right now we're carrying 145, 150 through spring ball, through summer, and we cut to 120 in camp, and then after the first game we go back to 150. So what does this model look like? … We haven't committed final numbers to our coaches. I've started to talk to them conceptually. I've met with every coach from rifle and bowling to football just about how this model can play out in their benefit, trying to get their creative juices flowing.” Full podcast. (link)

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled in favor of Grand Canyon, ruling the U.S. Department of Education “acted unlawfully by applying the incorrect legal standard in determining GCU’s nonprofit status,” and sent the case back to the DOE. From GCU: “In light of the Ninth Circuit’s ruling, the IRS 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status and independent valuations, we are hopeful that the Department will act in good faith and render a quick decision recognizing the university’s nonprofit status.” (link)

Florida Men’s Basketball HC Todd Golden has been accused by an undefined number of women for sexual harassment and stalking, according to Title IX documents obtained by The Alligator student newspaper’s Jack Meyer and Max Tucker. “The claims regarding sexual harassment, which could also include sexual exploitation, cited sending photos and videos of his genitalia while traveling for UF, unwanted sexual advances on Instagram, requesting sexual favors, and various occasions of stalking. There was allegedly more than one occasion in which Golden was taking photos of women walking or driving and sending those pictures to the subjects involved. Various stalking incidents also included Golden showing up to locations where he knew the women would be.” Two women who were allegedly victimized claim UF Special Assistant Ralphie Ferrari and UF Director of Basketball Strategy and Analytics Jonathan Safir were complicit in Golden’s misconduct and had knowledge of it, although neither of the men were mentioned in the Title IX complaint. The men’s basketball coaching staff didn’t respond in time for publication. More. (link)

USA Today’s Dan Wolken unpacks what Florida’s decision to retain Football HC Billy Napier portends for the Gators, and for the sport itself, and notes the “easy explanation for Florida giving Napier one more shot is money, as he’d be owed $26.7M if fired at the end of this season. But that probably isn’t the full story. Florida is a big, rich SEC school that has paid big buyouts before and will pay them again. If Texas A&M could come up with $75M to cut ties with Jimbo Fisher last year, Florida could undoubtedly make the math work on $26.7M if it really wanted to. It’s also possible [Gators AD Scott] Stricklin’s decision is strategically self-serving. After hiring, then firing Dan Mullen, a decisive miss on a second football coach would probably be the end of Stricklin's tenure as well. But Florida doesn't have a permanent president at the moment and isn’t in a great position to make an athletics director change. If Napier can take advantage of this opportunity, Stricklin may go from the chopping block to a contract extension under a new president.” Wolken goes on to point out that several non-UF factors, such as the timing of the transfer portal, the economics of the House settlement and the expansion of the College Football Playoff, also likely play into the decision to retain Napier. “Maybe it won’t work and we’ll be back here in a year saying that Florida should have gone ahead and made the change. Had [former Gators AD Jeremy] Foley held onto [former Football HC Ron] Zook one more year, he’d have missed out on hiring Urban Meyer and winning a couple national championships. But we’re not living in Foley’s world anymore.” (link)

Idaho State has installed Daktronics video boards at the ICCU Dome, Miller Ranch Stadium and Reed Gym. At the ICCU Dome, a large end-wall video display was installed to inform and entertain fans at Bengals football games and other university events. The display measures roughly 15.5 feet high by 85 feet wide. At Miller Ranch Stadium, which is the home of the Bengals softball team, a new outfield display was installed in April 2024, making it the only softball facility in the Big Sky to have a video board. The display measures approximately 8.5 feet high by 24 feet. For basketball and other university events held at Reed Gym, two end wall video displays were installed. Each display measures nearly 7 feet high by 24 feet wide. (link)
