The SEC has set a football scholarship limit of 85 for 2025, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who notes schools can still have rosters up to 105 and adds: “The SEC is exploring its own scholarship limits for other sports as well, though those are not finalized. Discussions in baseball, for instance, have centered on a scholarship limit of around 25 within the settlement-related roster of 34.” (link)

The Athletic’s Matt Baker reports that in a court filing this week, Florida State argued the exit fee to leave the ACC is up to $165M from $140M “when this whole thing got started. This prong, remember, is 3x the ACC's operating budget and separate from TV rights money (another nine-figure amount). FSU refers to the $165M as a "cartoonish amount." (link)

Texas A&M-Commerce is officially changing its name to East Texas A&M, following board of regents approval. Chancellor John Sharp: “We have corrected a decades-long mistake when the name A&M-Commerce was adapted. It always should have been ET. ‘East Texas A&M’ restores the historic pride to a great university.” Also, the A&M System “has provided generous funding to cover many of the expenses associated with this name change.” (link)

North Dakota State AD Matt Larsen says of the Bison’s future conference affiliation: “NDSU aspires to compete for championships at the highest level possible. As changes happen throughout college athletics, we continue to monitor the landscape of Division I membership. At this time, NDSU has not been invited to any other conferences, and we believe we are well-positioned for the future." According to Inforum’s Mike McFeely, Larsen and NDSU President David Cook have been “working behind the scenes the last couple months during the latest round of conference realignment. NDSU has grown disillusioned with the future of FCS with the likes of subdivision powers like Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, James Madison and Sam Houston leaving for FBS. The hope is to reunite with their old playoff rivals and other schools that value football at a higher level. … While a move to FBS would add millions of dollars to NDSU's athletic budget, it's believed donors are ready to make a move happen.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown unpacks how expensive it is to move from FCS to FBS and notes that in addition to the $5M fee to the NCAA, schools must significantly increase their budgets. For example, North Dakota State in FY23 reported $31.8M in total operating expenses with roughly $6.4M earmarked for the football team. “That’s on the higher side for FCS football programs. But it isn’t in the ballpark compared to their new aspirational peers in the Mountain West. The smallest operating budget of an MWC athletic department in FY23 was San Jose State, who reported $44.5M in total operating expenses. At the high end of the current MWC, schools like Air Force are reporting department expenses north of $65M, more than double what NDSU spends. To be in the ballpark of most MWC institutions would require a jump to around $50M in spending every year.” While the move would open up new revenue opportunities, Brown has “not talked to any college sports industry professional who believes there is enough of a built-in revenue increase for North Dakota State…or South Dakota State, or Sacramento State, or North Dakota, or Montana, or anybody else, to pay for a reclassification from new TV and MMR alone.” Brown goes on to note that “if there was a pathway for programs like NDSU, SDSU and the Montanas to play Mountain West Football while keeping the rest of their athletic programs in the Big Sky and Summit, I have been repeatedly told by folks with direct knowledge that those schools would seek to do exactly that. But my current understanding is that is not a scenario currently on the table.” (link)

Florida Football HC Billy Napier “will continue as head football coach,” according to Gators AD Scott Stricklin, who adds: “I am confident that Billy will meet the challenges and opportunities ahead. We will work alongside him to support any changes needed to elevate Gator football. As college athletics evolves, UF is committed to embracing innovation and strategy, ensuring the Gators thrive in today’s competitive landscape.” Full statement. (link); ESPN’s Pete Thamel notes the “buyout for Napier alone would have been more than $26M, which would have been the second biggest in college football history. (Behind Texas A&M last year.) The estimated entire transition of Napier, staff and buying out a coach was estimated internally as $40M. This decision comes with the backdrop of the expected passage of revenue share for the 2025 season, which portends a quieter year than normal for college coaching changes.” (link); Additionally, sources tell Thamel that “70% of Florida's [NIL] money is tied to freshmen and sophomores, and there is a sense that losing Napier would also mean losing [QB DJ] Lagway, who chose the Gators to play for Napier.” ESPN’s Andrea Adelson adds: “There are other factors at play as well. Interim president Kent Fuchs, who returned after Ben Sasse stepped down, hired Napier and Stricklin and wants to see them succeed.” (link)

The Washington Post’s Jesse Dougherty examines Mount St. Mary’s decision to add women’s flag football as a varsity sport and notes the move is due in part to the decision to opt into revenue-sharing. By doing so, Mount St. Mary’s “would have to adhere to new roster caps outlined for certain sports in the settlement, which are replacing scholarship limits. That means some roster spots in certain existing sports could vanish, which means the number of athletes enrolled at the school could drop, which is far from ideal for a college that relies on every tuition dollar that funnels from sports. At the moment, Mount St. Mary’s has about 140 athletes competing in men’s and women’s track and field. The settlement caps those rosters at 45 for each gender, plus 17 for cross-country. Because few, if any, track athletes are on full scholarships to begin with, slashing those roster spots would result in lost tuition money. In order to opt into revenue sharing, then, [Mountaineers AD Brad] Davis and his staff needed front-end solutions.” Flag football, however, does not have roster caps, at least not yet, and Davis tells Dougherty: “If I turn around to my university and say, ‘Hey, we’re going into this revenue-sharing system, but we’re going to have 40 fewer student-athletes,’ that’s a significant amount of revenue that’s going to hurt us in the future. Now instead of investing in our bigger programs, I’m just scrambling to balance the budget. So adding a sport like flag football, it will help offset that." To start, there will be no scholarships for flag football, but Davis hopes to build up to that. (link)

When LSU takes on Alabama this weekend, a caged, live tiger will be in attendance, but it won’t be Mike VII, LSU’s current eight-year-old mascot, who will be kept in his 15K-square-foot habitat across the street from Tiger Stadium. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, who has publicly advocated for the return of the tradition of having a live tiger at games, has instead facilitated the delivery of a tiger from an out-of-state refuge to assume the role for Saturday night’s game. According to LouisianaSports.net, Landry “has received some push back from LSU. The university has concerns about the potential trauma a tiger could undergo being driven around the stadium in front of over 100K screaming fans. In the past, cheerleaders have induced the live tiger to roar by stomping or beating on the mobile cage repeatedly. In more recent years, a stuffed tiger was waved in front of the cage to provoke the live animal.” LouisianaSports.net reached out to the Governor’s office but did not receive a comment. Efforts to contact LSU Veterinary Medicine and LSU’s Office of Communications & University Relations were not immediately successful. (link)

Eastern Michigan AD Scott Wetherbee over the summer received a contract extension through July 1, 2027, according to CollegeAD. Wetherbee will earn $320K in base pay this year and receive annual raises of $10K. He is also eligible for semiannual supplemental payments of $17,500 January 1 and July 1 each year. Wetherbee is eligible for a $2,500 bonus for every $1M in gift commitments as well as a $25K bonus if the department’s revenue is equal to or greater than expenses. Wetherbee can also earn $5K if EMU wins the MAC Cartwright Award, $10K apiece if the men’s and women’s basketball teams make the NCAA Tournament, $10K if the football team earns a bowl berth ($40K if it’s a New Year’s Six bowl), and bonuses ranging from $2,500 for eight football wins to $35K for 12. Should EMU part ways with Wetherbee without cause, he would be owed any remaining base pay for the remainder of his contract. (link)

AAC Commissioner Tim Pernetti on the Now It’s Legal podcast with Athletes.org Co-Founder Jim Cavale says media rights used to account for nearly all of a league’s revenue generation, but “that’s not the way it is anymore. There’s more out there, so we're talking about private capital and private equity. We're in the market not only valuing, but talking to brands about conference naming rights. We are pushing the envelope on legislation related to jersey patches and branded helmet stickers. Why are we doing all this? We’re not trying to turn college football into NASCAR, but we are trying to open up new commercial opportunities to generate more revenue for institutions so they can invest in more of these things continuously.” Pernetti also says the league is “talking about a minimum level of investment in House – not opt in, opt out, figure it out” but to “establish a minimum level of investment that to be in this conference, you're going to be expected to invest in House at a minimum. And what you can do beyond that it's a free market where you have the ability to generate more revenue and contribute more to it. So, that’s how we do it. We do it by thinking about doing things differently, constantly talking about change and we're going to swing the bat at some things that I think the industry has been reluctant to do in the past.” Pernetti goes on to point out that “everybody had a hand in a period of time where the business didn’t modernize itself or there was resistance to change, so you can’t excuse yourself from that responsibility now because there’s a component of it that comes back to affect you. So, the thing I’m concerned about is it feels like we’re going to have to do 10 years of work in one year.” Pernetti also says he’s asked student-athletes whether they want to be employees and “I think when they understand what that means, I think universally they don’t.” Full podcast. North Dakota State AD/FCS Selection Committee Chair Matt Larsen joins the FCS Delivered podcast to discuss putting the 24-team FCS Playoff field together and says seeding the top 16 teams is a “huge step” in the direction of making the tournament a true national championship. “There will still be some regionalization principles in those first rounds, but assuming those top 16 put in bids and have the ability to host, they’re going to get a chance to host. And I think more than anything it puts value back into the regular season. If you truly earn a seed, you're going to have that path to get to the national championship game, whether you're the one seed, the eight, the nine or the 16. And so I think it's really really positive for an already great championship that we have in FCS football.” Asked whether seeds will be adjusted to avoid conference matchups, Larsen says: “Probably not. Really what we’ve talked about as a committee is once you get one through eight that’s locked in. There aren’t going to be any adjustments there, just as historically there haven’t been any. As we get into nine through 16 there still are some principles that we want to make sure. For example, if there are more than four teams from one league on one side of the bracket, we may make a change to make that adjustment, but I think the biggest thing for folks to understand is we’re not going to take somebody who we voted in as a 10 seed and move to the 15 line just because it may make sense [from a conference standpoint].” Full podcast. The Athletic’s Matt Baker reports that according to a September 23 memo, the Mountain West allotted $13.33M for UNLV and another $13.33M for Air Force if they stayed in the conference. Those payments were to be spread over six years and start “as soon as practicable.” Baker indicates the league also earmarked $5.555M each for Nevada, New Mexico, San Jose State and Wyoming, while Hawaii was due $1.12M. However, “when the Mountain West and its members actually executed an agreement after a few more days of uncertainty and speculation about those schools’ futures, the terms changed. UNLV and Air Force will each receive 24.5% of the first exit-fee bucket ($61M). That’s $14.945M apiece — already an increase from the earlier proposal. A separate $21M bucket is split with the same percentages. That brings each school’s payout to $20.09M, an increase of $6.8M from the original $13.33M as stated on Sept. 23. More revenue is possible, too, depending on how much the conference spends on legal fees and recruiting new members. … The Athletic has reported that the total incentives for UNLV and Air Force could reach $25M.” Baker notes that “other schools’ payouts also rose in the second agreement once Utah State’s exit fees were spelled out. The two buckets are set to pay Nevada, New Mexico, San Jose State and Wyoming $9.43M each.” (link)

ESPN’s Andrea Adelson examines whether Tennessee Women’s Basketball HC Kim Caldwell will lead the Lady Vols back to their perch atop the sport and observes: “If there is natural skepticism outside the program about whether Caldwell is the right fit to bring Tennessee basketball back to its rightful place atop the sport, athletic director Danny White shrugs it off.” White: "I don't like making just the safe hire that you think is going to be good enough to not get you fired as an AD. We're going to swing for the fences, and I'm not going to hire somebody that I think is just going to be good enough. I want to hire somebody that has a chance to make us elite. I was the most confident that Kim could give us the spark that we need. I don't see any reason why it won't work." White adds of former HC Kellie Harper: "I love Kellie. I think she's a great coach, and a phenomenal person. But I told her, 'If I was at probably any other SEC school or Power 5 school, I'd love for her to be our head coach for 20 years.' She ran the program right. But the standard wasn't being met, and she, of all people, knows that.” For her part, Caldwell says there are a “lot of people that want [White] to be wrong. I'm a very unexpected hire. It's very out of the box, and I'm probably more shocked than anyone in the country. So, I get it. … That's really something that motivates me every single day." White calls getting the Lady Vols back to annual title contention “one of – if not our top priority. It has to happen.” (link)

Boise State announces the Jeramiah and Elizabeth Dickey True Blue Scholarship, which will be awarded annually to an Idaho resident based primarily on financial need and merit. The scholarship was created through a partnership with the Dickeys and longtime Broncos donors Randy and Lisa Hales. Dickey: "From day one, we were embraced, encouraged and supported by Bronco Nation. Our family is so grateful to be Broncos and we want to pay it forward. Elizabeth and I are humbled by this opportunity. Thank you Randy and Lisa for your continued support of our mission and vision! It takes a team and we are honored to represent the Blue and Orange." Auburn Football HC Hugh Freeze says of scholarship limits next year: “My understanding is we're still going to be at 85. … So, I don't think that's the right move for us; I do think we should have gone up to at least 90 to 95. We're being asked to play more games. There's no room to replace people is my understanding from your roster limit. So, I wish we would have went up a few scholarships. My understanding is we're still going to be at 85, so you're signing based on that.” Freeze went on to remark: “As much as I would love to build this program heavily through the high school ranks, which I'm sure trying to do, that requires a little patience, which not many people want to have patience in today's time. And, I don't know that it's really realistic that you can continue to do that because we're signing for an 85-man roster come early December and then the portal opens and you lose X amount. … There is no formula that I don't think anyone can give that is going to be a consistent one in trying to manage your 85-man roster. It's very, very difficult." (link)

Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter posits that even though the “push by the NCAA & others for a federal law has often been termed an ‘NIL law,’ the real issue that’s come to the forefront is college athlete employment. That issue will be where most of the lobbying now takes place. In addition to an antitrust exemption.” Attorney Scott Schneider counters: “1. Regardless of whether there is legislation, the composition of the NLRB will change, and I'm skeptical that the (already limited) Dartmouth RD decision will survive. 2. Jennifer Abruzzo won't be the GC of the NLRB in the Trump Administration. 3. The joint employer argument at the heart of the USC case (and pushed by Abruzzo) is likely dead on arrival under the Trump Administration.” Winter agrees with the NLRB points but adds: “I think we’ll see more court decisions like the 3rd Circuit’s Johnson decision moving forward. Which would make the employment debate relevant regardless of what happens at the NLRB.” Schneider contends that “Johnson is limited (and that risk can be mitigated in most sports), may prove to be counterproductive for student athletes, and doesn't get you to a systemic resolution. Interesting times.” To which Winter responds: “Agreed. Much easier to mitigate risk under the Johnson test and ensure only some athletes will be considered employees.” (link)

Her Competitive Advantage Founder Stephanie Barrett joins Connect’s Anthony Grassi from the 2024 Women Leaders in Sports Convention to discuss recent studies highlighting the success former female student-athletes are having in the business world. Barrett highlights challenges that former student-athletes have in getting hired post-graduation and how HCA is providing solutions in that space. Barrett: “When you think about success in life and careers, there is no stronger demographic than current and former collegiate female athletes. Ernst & Young, Deloitte, KPMG, all the big organizations have done study after study where they proved time and time again the value of this demographic to businesses across the world. One of the stats that I think is most well-known is that 94% of C-suite women played competitive sports and over half at the collegiate level. Ernst & Young actually did another one that's probably a little bit more impactful that says that 93% of women making over $100K a year or more played competitive sports and over half at the collegiate level. So, companies and organizations really know that this demographic is extremely lucrative for their businesses and really give them that competitive edge. The issue is in today's society it's actually illegal to say that you want to hire a female, so these organizations don't actually know where to go when they're trying to hire the specific demographic.” More on Connect.
