With national signing day approaching, ESPN’s Dan Murphy and Michael Rothstein examine how the House settlement is already impacting Olympic sport student-athletes. For instance, Taylor Wilson, a women’s soccer recruit committed to Penn State, found out her verbal scholarship offer had been rescinded the day before her senior season started, and Murphy and Rothstein note: “Wilson, who had a wardrobe full of Nittany Lions gear, said Penn State had been ‘a personality trait of mine.’ She has a picture of herself with Nittany Lions coach Erica Dambach from a camp when she was 12. Four years later, a recruiting packet and scholarship offer arrived, which she accepted. A year later, the dream was pulled away.” Wilson, who is 17, says: "I was just shattered. I didn't really know how to act. I kind of felt numb." The following morning, Dambach “was in tears during a 45-minute FaceTime conversation. Wilson said Dambach explained the pulled offer had nothing to do with her play or a lack of interest from the Nittany Lions. Instead, due to the new rules proposed by the pending settlement, women's soccer rosters are capped at 28 players. Dambach's projected roster for next fall was over the limit.” Murphy and Rothstein point out that conversations like this are happening all across the country; meanwhile, “Steve Berman, co-lead attorney for the athletes, told ESPN he and fellow plaintiffs' attorney Jeffrey Kessler wanted roster sizes to be as large as possible and were pleased with where the numbers landed.” Berman: "I think what we've negotiated is fair because on the whole more athletes are going to get more money than before in those sports.” Lots more, including: “Sources with knowledge of the rules under consideration told ESPN that it's unlikely teams will be allowed to maintain a practice squad or junior varsity roster that works out with their varsity team. It's also unlikely that teams will be able to move players on and off their roster during the season via injured reserve lists like those that exist in pro sports.” (link)

ESPN’s Max Olson breaks down what to expect from this cycle’s football transfer window, which he notes opens the day the 12-team College Football Playoff bracket is announced. While the possibility exists for this to be a particularly busy portal cycle, some staffers tell Olson the opposite is just as, if not more, likely. One Big 12 director of player personnel (DPP) says: "I feel like this is going to be the last big window. I just think with everybody having money and the same or similar amount of money, you probably won't see people moving around as much. You'll see G5-to-P5 transfers, sure, but I just get this vibe it's not going to be what it's always been." An ACC DPP believes “guys are going to try to stay in college as long as they can and just find the best opportunities to be able to get paid, because there's going to be more money than ever in the game. I think it'll have the most amount of kids in the portal that we've seen. It's going to be crazy, and it's already started." As for who’s going big this cycle, Olson points out that big-brand teams who underachieved this year – namely, Florida State, Oklahoma and USC – are likely buyers, as is Florida, which will want to build around QB DJ Lagway. One SEC DPP says: “Anyone that's on the hot seat, you just have to go crazy.” This cycle is likely to be active for QBs once again, as Olson notes 20 Power 4 teams are losing their senior signal-callers with several underclassmen potentially poised to enter the NFL Draft. Meanwhile, teams like Michigan, Auburn, Miami (FL) and Florida State will all be looking for new QBs. One industry source tells Olson: "There's not one who's worth $3M, but I think you're going to have a lot of million-dollar quarterbacks or $750K+. I mean, you had quarterbacks moving around for $250K or $300K this year that were real, proven guys. That's just not going to happen next year." More. (link)

+ Nebraska has named former West Virginia/Houston Football HC Dana Holgorsen as OC. Holgorsen arrived in Lincoln last week as an offensive consultant and agreed to take control of the offense as play caller after observing the Huskers’ operation on Monday and Tuesday, according to The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman. Holgorsen had spent the season up to that point as an analyst at TCU. Former OC Marcus Satterfield will remain with the team this month coaching tight ends. (link)

With large buyouts, the transfer portal and looming revenue-sharing disincentivizing ADs from letting Football HCs go, On3’s Andy Staples believes the coordinator market will be active this offseason. Already, he observes, “Oklahoma needs an OC. Oklahoma State may need one soon. Florida State needs both coordinators. The conditions for Billy Napier’s return at Florida may include a requirement to hire a play-calling OC (in place of Napier calling the offense) and to replace the DC. They’re unhappy with the offenses at Nebraska and Georgia. If LSU loses another game (or two), Brian Kelly can’t be fired, but a sacrifice may be sought. Michigan’s roster issues can be traced back to the timing of Jim Harbaugh’s departure, but does that mean first-year head coach Sherrone Moore is satisfied with the way the offense has been run?” Staples also notes: “And don’t be surprised if some coaches who would have tried to land head-coaching jobs this offseason take coordinator jobs. It’s not an accident that former West Virginia and Houston coach Dana Holgorsen signed on last week with Nebraska as an offensive consultant (and now OC). … Also, watch the Group of 5. There could be more head coach-to-power conference-coordinator moves like the one that took Kane Wommack from South Alabama head coach to Alabama defensive coordinator. Let’s say a power conference team really wants an experienced offensive mind. Would they try to lure Jason Candle from Toledo or Tom Herman from Florida Atlantic by offering to double the salary the G5 team pays the head coach? It’s entirely possible.” (link)

Auburn Men’s Basketball HC Bruce Pearl addresses the on-plane scuffle that forced the Tigers’ Houston-bound plane to return to the airport last week: “I’m limited in what I want to say, but it was an unfortunate situation. But we are dealing with it head-on and it's sort of an ongoing process, so I think that's the best way I can approach it. … I think in order to be in compliance with my leadership – but listen, we’re going to handle it the right way. Just – we’re going to handle it the right way. And, in spite of a very rough start to our trip, we played in a basketball game in November that felt like it was March.” Asked whether the student-athletes will be allowed to play in the next game, Pearl said they will be in class but couldn’t comment further. USC broke ground on its $200M Bloom Football Performance Center last week, and SBJ’s Bret McCormick notes the “football HQ, designed by HNTB and built by Clark Construction, is part of a larger effort called ‘Athletics West’ that seeks to better utilize USC athletics' small footprint amid a cramped L.A. campus. The plan built several new Olympic sports venues, reoriented the baseball venue 45 degrees to create new space and moves the football program out of the John McKay Center. … Naturally, the football center features an NIL suite, including green screen rooms and large work areas for content teams, podcast and video recording spaces and a sound stage. The facility will include a series of outdoor rooftop lounges, with one large enough to hold 300-person gatherings, whether for recruiting or donors.” McCormick also says to “expect a spa-like space that’s part of Trojan football players’ daily routines. [Trojans Senior Assoc. AD for Operations and Capital Initiatives Jeff] Fucci has been on a national tour of top college football programs’ training facilities during the last year vetting other programs’ approach to those categories, while also gathering input from the L.A. pro teams. … Where the facility could really sing is through environmental graphics. Though USC hasn’t been as successful during the last decade, the school’s tradition offers designers a rich story with which to work. Heisman trophies (eight) and National Championship trophies (they’ve won 11), Pro Football Hall of Fame jackets (14) and a two-story draft wall (70-something first-round picks) all will play a prominent role in the design.” (link)

SBJ’s Bret McCormick also goes behind the scenes of Missouri’s $250M Memorial Stadium renovation, and DLR Group Sports Design Leader Ryan Freeland explains: “Going back to their request for proposals, everything was about tradition, not just saving tradition but honoring it and bolstering it. One of the main priorities from Day 1 was how do we embrace tradition? Everything is about connecting to that Rock M Club in some way.” The new north end zone features seven new seating projects and two new clubs, including the Rock M Club, and will increase capacity by about 4K to 65K. Freeland: “It’s finishing, enclosing that north end zone, which will amplify the energy of the entire stadium and enhance that fortress feel that’s needed for an SEC football stadium.” Just above the Rock M centerpiece sits a 300-person club that’s envisioned as a space the university can use throughout the year for corporate events, weddings and other revenue-generating private events. Twenty-eight suites (14 on each side) with foldable glass flank the club, offering an indoor/outdoor experience, depending on the weather. A premium lounge sits behind each 14-suite set. And finally, another club is on the third level flanked by Tiger Dens, open-air party suites bathed in the sounds and smells of college football. Freeland: “It’s a phenomenal recruitment tool, from a retention as well as recruitment standpoint. It doubles down on the overall commitment to the program. They truly want to be a first-in-class SEC program, they’re doubling down.” (link)

The Big 12 has fined Utah AD Mark Harlan $40K and publicly reprimanded him for his comments following Saturday’s Holy War matchup with BYU. Commissioner Brett Yormark: “Mark’s comments irresponsibly challenged the professionalism of our officials and the integrity of the Big 12 Conference. There is a right way and a wrong way to voice concerns. Unfortunately, Mark chose the wrong way. Accordingly, this violation warrants a public reprimand and financial penalty. The Big 12 Conference prioritizes professionalism, integrity, and fairness, and will continue to do so.” Harlan: “Last night following our game against BYU, I made clear my feelings related to the game officiating. However, I recognize that there are more appropriate times and avenues to express those concerns, and I accept the consequences of my decision. My comments came after having just left our team locker room where our student-athletes were hurting and upset. The University of Utah is proud to be a member of the Big 12 Conference and we look forward to working with our peers to continue to enhance the league. BYU, Coach [Kalani] Sitake and their coaches and student-athletes are having a terrific season and we wish them the very best.” (link); ESPN’s Pete Thamel adds some context: “The Big 12 fine is considered stiff, as the two athletic director fines of note in the last decade were $25K – Iowa State's Jamie Pollard in 2014 and Baylor's Mack Rhoades during the last basketball season.” Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt also received a $25K fine in 2019. Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter says of Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia’s lawsuit against the NCAA: “It’s always hard to predict how litigation will turn out, but Pavia’s lawsuit has a better chance of success than it would have had just a few years ago, based on courts’ recent willingness to find that NCAA rules violate antitrust law and with college athletes now able to argue they’re economically harmed by not being able to play (because of NIL compensation that comes along with playing).” Winter adds that “the big question will likely be whether the NCAA can show there are procompetitive justifications for limiting the number of years someone can be a college athlete. … Based on recent court decisions, and the evidence that’s been developed in those cases, that may be hard to do. If he’s given those two additional years, he’d presumably make a significant amount of NIL compensation during those two years.” (link, link)

Want to work at San Diego? Toreros AD Kimya Massey sits down with Connect's Kristen Eargle to highlight his first six months leading the department, building USD’s culture and the specifics for his vision for the Assistant AD for Marketing, Fan Engagement, and Revenue Strategy opening. Massey also talks about what USD is looking for in fit within the department and for this role in particular. “Fit is not always what you know, but how you go about learning what you’re going to need to know. So, obviously having great energy, being positive, being a glass-half full-person, I love that. Someone who knows how to grind when they need to grind, has a great work ethic; but frankly, just having integrity, being communicative, being humble. Having humility I think is a really important trait that we maybe don't see as much as we like to see. I think those are all really good intangibles and places to start and then you have the skill sets you like to have. Obviously, we would like to have someone with some marketing experience, to have someone who has a little bit of ticketing or sponsorship experience, someone who can really be creative. There’s a lot of new technology out there specifically in these types of roles, so being able to use technology in a creative way. But honestly, at the end of the day, having a good human who knows how to work with others and knows how to communicate and be reflective on their own work, but also others’ and also be able to lead people in a positive, effective way are really the intangibles I look for first. And then we look at the skill sets.” Find out more on Connect. (link)

New Oral Roberts Deputy AD SJ Tuohy Q&As with the Daytona Beach News-Journal’s Chris Boyle about his extensive work in NIL, the challenges mid-major programs face in modern college athletics, how his work overseeing the UCF-focused Kingdom Collective has prepared him for his new role and more. On his decision to accept the post at ORU: “To me, it lines up with what I believe in. … I like the mission there. You want to be somewhere where they have won before and have shown that winning matters. They've gone to the Sweet 16 (in men's basketball) in the last couple years, and they went to the College World Series last year. It's a place that wins, but I also wanted to go somewhere I could make an impact. One of the biggest things about UCF is I felt like we were building something and stacking something in the Big 12 and trying to compete. I think Oral Roberts is the same way. You can make a pretty tangible impact and grow it; it's not just plug and play.” Tuohy also explains how overseeing a collective has prepared him for his Deputy AD role: “You're doing a lot of stuff, right? You're doing media outreach, you're doing fundraising, you're doing marketing, you're doing budgeting. It's very similar; it's obviously a smaller scale than what [UCF AD] Terry [Mohajir] does, or someone in the athletic department does. If you do one thing for a long time, you get good at that one thing. I think The Kingdom piece, you have to do a lot of different roles, which is good.” The biggest misconception regarding NIL’s role in recruiting, Tuohy explains, is that “negotiations are a super small piece of it. If you're trying to hit on what's wrong about the preconceived (notions) of negotiations, it's that the contracts aren't structured, or that it's the Wild West. Collectives are trying to clean things up with providing structure in those contracts. I think some of the transfer rules in the NCAA are the ones that really aren't.” Full interview. (link)

Indiana Football HC Curt Cignetti earned a $250K bonus for assuring the Hoosiers finish in the top six of the Big Ten standings. USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz notes Cignetti has now brought in $600K in bonuses to go with the automatic one-year contract extension and $250K raise, beginning next season. At present, the added season is scheduled to be worth $5.1M with at least $3.3M guaranteed. If the Hoosiers keep winning, he could pick up another $2.7M in bonuses. The next step would be $250K more if the team finishes second in the Big Ten. Oregon HC Dan Lanning also picked up a bonus for winning at least 10 games this season. Berkowitz: “This is the second consecutive season in which he has added a year to his contract, which calls for a $200K pay increase annually. Under the agreement, he can get this automatic extension three times. He and Oregon are now set to be together through Jan. 31, 2031. If the school fired him without cause, it would owe him all of the pay remaining under the deal (currently about $55M). If Lanning decides to terminate the agreement between now and the scheduled expiration date, he would owe the school $20M. Lanning would get a $250K bonus if the Ducks reach 11 regular-season wins and $250K more if they reach 12. He has additional amounts available for playing in, and winning, the Big Ten championship game and/or the College Football Playoff. He also can get a bonus based on team academics.” (link)

With a few exceptions, ESPN on-air talent has largely remained apolitical during Chairman Jimmy Pitaro’s tenure, and Puck’s John Ourand explains there are a couple reasons for this: “First, some of the more opinionated talent—including [Jemele] Hill, [Dan] Le Batard, and [Pablo] Torre—have all left the network. And after six years in charge, there’s no gray area surrounding Pitaro’s political philosophy. Everyone knows exactly what he expects of them. It’s a marked departure from the era of John Skipper, Pitaro’s beloved predecessor, who was professionally weaned at Rolling Stone and was much more comfortable with talent sharing their opinions. Skipper encouraged an environment where people could speak their minds, and hired people like Hill and Le Batard to do just that. Others point to the changing face of sports media, and a new era in which talent like [Pat] McAfee and Stephen A. [Smith] have YouTube shows or podcasts to share their extracurricular opinions. Furthermore, Skipper reigned during the peak talent era, when ESPN was in 100M homes. In those days, anchors were larger-than-life stars and often had the latitude to behave that way. Now, the company is regularly culling its rolls and the surviving denizens in Bristol are too world-weary or chilled by the broader industrial environment to dare speak their minds—and subsequently contemplate a future calling a Rutgers-Northwestern game on the Big Ten Network.” (link)

By the end of September, Nevada sportsbooks were up $80.9M, the most ever in a single month, and Westgate SuperBook EVP for Race & Sports Operations Jay Kornegay tells ESPN’s David Purdum that "between Weeks 2 and 3, we won almost every single game. I can't remember saying that ever." The NFL and college football accounted for $55.8M of the record, and bookmakers explain that while they had a good start to the college football season, the NFL’s 26 upsets were the catalyst for the record month. Kornegay: "When you start seeing the favorites losing outright, it compounds the recreational players' losses because not only do they love to play the perceived better team, but they also love to tease them and parlay them. And when you knock them out straight-up, it's beneficial to the bookmaker." Through September, Nevada sportsbooks were up $370.7M, on pace for the state's most lucrative year ever, but Circa owner Derek Stevens says: "When you have these big, big wins, if you're a bookmaker, you can't take that stuff too seriously and when you take these big losses, you got to continue to run the process. I just think that it was disproportional how it fell at the beginning of the year. October's been a pretty good players' month. November, I guess we'll see how things are going to play out." (link)
