Villanova held virtual interviews with AD candidates last week and has narrowed the list down to “at least three finalists” who will interview in person this week, according to CollegeAD, which reports that “several sitting athletic directors are believed to be in the mix.” (link)

Oregon remains atop the College Football Playoff rankings, followed by Ohio State, Texas, Penn State, Indiana, BYU, Tennessee, Notre Dame, Miami (FL), Alabama, Ole Miss and Georgia, respectively. Full ranking. (link); Michigan AD/CFP Selection Committee Chair Warde Manuel explained in response to a question about whether Georgia’s nine-spot drop was a result of the Ole Miss game in particular or the season as a whole: “I think it's a combination of both. Their offense hasn't been consistent. The committee discussed that. They've struggled with some turnovers. Defense has been solid, although in the loss to Ole Miss, we felt that that plays a factor. With the offense struggling, their defense was on the field quite a bit. But they have just lacked some consistency on the offensive side.” With Indiana and BYU both moving up after close wins and Tennessee staying put, Manuel says Vols QB Nico Iamaleava’s injury was not a factor in the decision. “It really came down to the play last week of both Indiana and BYU, both winning big games on their schedule. Tennessee, the offense has struggled some the second half of the season, not being consistent early in the year, and we just felt as a committee that at this time Indiana has been playing very well, a close win against Michigan, but other than that, they've dominated everyone they've played.” On how the committee views the causal impact strength of schedule has on teams’ performances: “We also factor in wins and losses in terms of who you play and how you play in those particular games. A team with a weaker schedule, how they perform as well against the opponents that they play. So it's an evaluation that takes into consideration strength of schedule but it also evaluates how you play.” More. (link)

Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia’s request for a temporary restraining order against the NCAA was denied by U.S. District Court Judge William Campbell, who ruled: “Given that Plaintiff has almost certainly been aware of the challenged bylaws and his ineligibility to play college football in the 2025-26 season for quite some time and has been discussing possible resolution with the NCAA, the Court is not persuaded that an ex parte order is justified. This is particularly the case here where the Plaintiff seeks prospective injunctive relief, not merely preservation of the status quo." Ryan Downton, one of Pavia’s attorneys, says Pavia is “disappointed that the court did not enter any injunctive relief at this time” but is “pleased that the court is setting an expedited briefing schedule on the preliminary injunction. We are not surprised that the court wanted to allow the NCAA an opportunity to be heard. We think that is appropriate and reasonable, and we look forward to a hearing in the next few weeks.” As reported previously, Pavia is suing the NCAA hoping to get another year of eligibility. (link)

In the latest episode of The Journey, NABC Executive Director Craig Robinson joins Collegiate Sports Associates Senior Consultant/former Virginia AD Craig Littlepage to discuss the evolution of the sport and how coaches and administrators can use the changing landscape to enhance the student-athlete and fan experience, the value of higher education, advice for young and mid-career professionals and more. Robinson says of improving the student-athlete and fan experience: “The NCAA is run on a bureaucratic sort of landscape and process, and I think it's time to move away from that into more of a business standpoint where we can move quickly with all these changes. Maybe instead of having so many committees decide on what's going to happen in men's college basketball, we could somehow have a commissioner and have an advisory board that can turn on a dime with different things. I think that would help a lot of the stuff.” Robinson believes each sport would benefit from having its own autonomous leadership structure and says it’s particularly important in college basketball because the NCAA Tournament “pays for everything” and “I’ve had coaches from other sports say, ‘Hey, I wish they'd stop messing around with college basketball before I lose my job. So, yes, that is what I'm calling for…let the practitioners run their stuff.” Full interview. (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann outlines 10 reasons why a GOP takeover of the executive and legislative branches may not stop college athletes from becoming employees. First, he notes it could be too far down the road to stop. Second, the “NLRB is an independent agency with board members whose backgrounds could be inclined to favor college athletes as employees.” Further, there’s no evidence that prohibiting college athletes from becoming employees is a legislative or policy priority for Trump, who owned the New Jersey Generals in the USFL, and “might be inclined to view college sports—especially big-time college sports—as akin to pro sports.” Meanwhile, Trump “aggressively courted organized labor” during the election. Therefore, Trump agreeing to ban college athletes as employees could imperil his relations with organized labor, whose membership, and accompanying union dues, might grow considerably if college employee-athletes unionized.” Also, while the Republicans will control the Senate, the GOP’s majority currently projects as 53 seats and will fall short of 60, the number necessary to stop a filibuster. Florida State AD Michael Alford talks about the decision to part ways with several Football ACs and what FSU is doing to continue moving forward: “This process is a byproduct of daily, nightly, weekly, constant communication between Coach [Mike] Norvell and I. So all these discussions during this evaluation, they’ve been excellent. Our relationship is very comfortable with each other. Very candid. We can talk about each other’s vision…and the one thing I love about Mike is his willingness to engage with me. To listen to me, and vice-versa. We’re very comfortable in our discussions with each other. … This was very personal to him. It just was.” As the Noles make coaching and other evaluations this offseason, Alford says Norvell “leads the evaluation, 100%,” adding: “I will give my assessment. But he and I are full partners in the vision and the assessment of the program. I’m not going to tell you we always agree – that’s the same with any of my head coaches. But I’m also one that I’m going to listen to their assessment, to what they think is the best thing for their program. I will provide my assessment, my experiences from being in this business for over 30 years – and some of the professional experiences I have – and try to work with my coaches to try to get to the desired outcome. But he’s led that evaluation. Now, the assessment’s been going on for a while now. We’ve been looking at everything – and I mean everything – regarding the program. We’re not done evaluating the program. There’s some things that I’ve brought up to him that I’ve said, ‘Hey, on your radar. I want to discuss this with you at the end of the year.’ … It doesn’t mean I’m right. It just means we’re going to have a discussion on it. And I do that with all of my programs.” (link)

After clinching the MAC regular season and tournament titles and earning a top 20 spot in the RPI, Western Michigan’s women’s soccer team finds itself going on the road to play Michigan State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. MLive.com’s Matthew Ehler notes WMU’s “only blemish on the season came against Big East opponent Creighton (0-3) at the beginning of the season, but the Broncos own ties against Big Ten opponents Wisconsin and Iowa –– both teams that own RPI’s in the top 30,” and Broncos AD Dan Bartholomae says: “To pass on us as a host is inexplicable. Michigan State is a worthy host without question, but the matchup could have been avoided. It feels lazy.” (link)

The Horizon League is instituting new “excellence” and “performance” funds for women’s basketball, and Commissioner Julie Roe Lach tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “We've already been investing in women's basketball. This, to me, is a continuation of that and really bringing them to level set both the women's excellence fund – that unfunded distribution that now we do for both men and women – but then also recognizing we need to have a coordinated effort with the NCAA’s new units coming on board with our own performance fund.” Portnoy explains the excellence fund “incentivizes scheduling stronger opponents, will pay programs from a pot of $400K annually ($200K for both the men’s and women’s sides). The performance fund, meanwhile, will see NCAA Tournament units distributed to schools based on varying performance metrics, such as postseason success.” The scheduling component of the excellence fund was also conceived in conjunction with analytics firm HDI, and Roe Lach explains: “That really focused on how we go about non-league scheduling, so schools are not left to their own devices. It's not one-size-fits-all. … It's a very collaborative process with the head coach and the athletics director -- and credit to them for coming on board and, frankly, collaborating with our league office the way they do.” (link)

UNLV is remodeling its fundraising program. Beginning with the 2025-26 academic year, the giving structure will recognize donors based on their philanthropic contributions, removing season ticket spending as a way to determine donor benefits. Additionally, the Rebel Athletic Fund has established a new Champion Rebels Annual Fund for gifts made to the respective levels of Contributor, Scarlet, and Gray. All gifts made at these levels ($4,999 and below) must be directed to the UNLV Athletics unrestricted annual fund which supports all student-athletes. (link)

American International’s hockey team will return to DII at the end of the season. According to College Hockey Insider’s Mike McMahon, AIC’s men’s hockey team had the highest expenditures of any non-football team at the school, totaling over $1.77M. AIC’s program began in 1948 and was DII until 1998 when it joined DI and the MAAC. McMahon adds: “At a town hall in September, the school announced that it had not hit enrollment goals and did not know the financial impact it would have on the school. At the September town hall, the school said it would hold another town hall this month (November) to update more details on possible budget cuts. It appears the hockey program is a victim of these cuts. Moving back to Division II, AIC will forgo its partnership with the MassMutual Center in downtown Springfield. The move will also result in slashed scholarships. … This is a punch in the gut for college hockey.” Also: “I’m also guessing that a number of players will enter the portal and look to move to another D-I program, but this announcement comes at an awful time for them. Due to the House v. NCAA settlement, many rosters are about to be reduced to 26 players. Last week, the NCAA approved the eligibility of CHL players, so there are fewer DI roster opportunities.” (link)

Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua, in a discussion with law school students this week, remarked that “I think we are in the midst of [big changes] now with NIL, the House settlement and with college athletics drifting more and more to a professional model, particularly in football and men’s and women’s basketball. … 95% of the revenue that comes into the Notre Dame athletic department is due to football. Now, we also have one of the two or three best women‘s basketball programs in the country. So we want to continue investing in all of our sports.” Bevacqua also commented on Notre Dame’s unique position which he believes sets it apart from its athletic competitors and academic peers. “We could have unbelievable students and beat Harvard and lose 100-nothing to Alabama, or we could flip the switch and say, ‘Hey, we’re not going to care about academic standards, we’re not going to care about kids, we’re just going to become a football factory and beat Alabama.’ … We’re going to give [student-athletes] every resource imaginable to succeed athletically – the best coaches, best facilities, an unbelievable schedule, sports science, nutrition, data analytics. But we’re going to do the same thing academically, and we’re going to give you every resource to meet here with a Notre Dame degree.” (link)

On theme, the 2026 Navy-Notre Dame football matchup will take place at the New England Patriots’ Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. Midshipmen AD Chet Gladchuk: “The extraordinary effort put forth by the Kraft Group, the New England Patriots and the entire New England area for the 2023 Army-Navy Game made it logical to bring back another great rivalry, the 99th playing of the Navy-Notre Dame Game, to Gillette Stadium on Oct. 31, 2026. The Boston area is a terrific place to visit in the fall and I have no doubt both Navy and Notre Dame fans will pack Gillette Stadium.” (link)

“I’m hearing about walk-ons and future recruits ... who haven’t signed yet getting that hard phone call. That’s brutal. It’s really hard, because now a roster spot is really a limited commodity, for lack of a better word, where it didn’t used to be.” That’s Minnesota Women’s Volleyball HC Keegan Cook as National Signing Day approaches tomorrow against the backdrop of scholarship reductions across the industry. National Wrestling Coaches Association Executive Director Mike Moyer: “Wrestling can provide access to college for so many young men and women who otherwise wouldn’t have that opportunity. Whenever you start limiting opportunities, it’s always unfortunate.” Meanwhile, USA Wrestling Executive Director & USOPC Board Member Rich Bender: “There’s a lot of anxiety around what impact this is going to have on Olympic sports. You don’t have to have too big an imagination to think that if the pool of resources is being drastically reduced, the athletic department is probably not thinking of cutting expenses around football and basketball. So where do you go?” (link)

Michigan inks a multiyear partnership with Passes, a direct-to-fan engagement and monetization platform, to create NIL value across 29 sports and provide “unprecedented” fan access. The deal, facilitated by Learfield, allows U-M athletes use of the Michigan logo and trademarks in merchandise, and Passes says it aims to support student-athletes in monetizing themselves while creating an avenue for fan interaction. According to The Wolverine’s Clayton Sayfie, the “Michigan Content Hub will be the home for fans to receive different tiers of access to exclusive content, merchandise and experience,” and Passes CEO Lucy Guo explains: “Passes allows content creators to essentially monetize their brand via really any method — whether it's merchandise, subscriptions, DMs, etc. So, Passes is allowing athletes to essentially make more money by being able to provide content to their fans. We've partnered with Michigan to essentially help these athletes monetize and then also created a — I don't want to say collective, but we've created an official partnership — where there's a tier called Team 146 and donations go directly to recruiting the next season's athletes for years to come, which is super exciting.” Guo also says she hopes the deal will help the Wolverines land top-ranked QB Bryce Underwood: “It's definitely something we care a lot about. So yes, we have been in discussions, and contribute to an NIL package that'll help bring Bryce to Michigan. … Michigan is really his hometown, right? He has the opportunity to be a hometown hero. He has the opportunity to make more money. To me, it seems like a no-brainer. I'm not Bryce, but I will attempt to convince Bryce.” (link, link)

The Daily News-Record’s Shane Mettlen takes a look at James Madison’s Honors1 NIL Program and observes that it allows members of the Montpelier Collective to earn priority points and features a searchable database of every JMU student-athlete. Individuals and businesses who want to make a deal with a Dukes player can find them online and submit proposals to the JMU compliance department. Dukes Assoc. AD for Communications and Strategic Initiatives Kevin Warner: “In the early going we all heard the horror stories of kids who signed bad deals. Signed away their rights for life or got a free car, but didn’t know they had to pay the taxes. Now that we can be a little more directly involved we can also help with this stuff.” Mettlen points out the Montpelier Collective was “one of the few in the country that was able to maintain its 501(c)(3) charitable tax status as it works exclusively with organizations such as the Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity to provide marketing opportunities for JMU athletes,” and Dukes AD Matt Roan explains: “I think what we have with our collective, the non-profit status, again, I go back to something uniquely JMU, I like that. I think that the exchange for us kind of gets into the for-profit, so we have that full menu of options.” With the Honors1 infrastructure in place, Roan adds: “We have a platform, we are taking certain steps and can enhance what the student-athlete has available to him on Day 1. But we’re also saying you come in, you have a great experience, you add value and all of those sorts of things, and here are the things that may be available to you on Day 2.” (link)

Opendorse CEO Blake Lawrence examines how the Washington Post’s recent report on the “hidden NIL economy” compares to his company’s data: “NIL compensation by gender: Washington Post says 82% to men, 18% to women. Opendorse data says 88% to men, 12% to women. Biggest NL deal: Washington Post has $1.2M to a basketball player, in our data set it's $4M to a football player. High-end ACC basketball earnings, they’re saying that men's basketball in the ACC, they’re getting up to $415K per year. In our data set, that's getting closer to $2M a year. Overall payment size: in the Washington Post data set, 0.2% of all payments are above $100K. In the Opendorse data set, about 2%, so about 10 times higher amount. Men’s basketball versus women’s basketball disparities: They say that men are out-earning women by eight times. Opendorse says it's only three times, so the broader the data set, you might see that women's basketball is actually doing pretty well compared to men’s.” Lawrence also notes that the Post got data from eight of 66 schools whereas Opendorse has data from all 66. Auburn Football HC Hugh Freeze says the staff has already started re-recruiting the current roster. Freeze explains that most of those conversations are going through Auburn‘s personnel office and the On To Victory collective. “I’m thankful for them and that I don’t have to engage in most of those because that would be really, really very hard to do and difficult because you want to have genuine, real relationships that are built on trust and communication. And that’s more and more difficult to do if you’re having to handle every single facet and aspect of today’s game. So, I mean, obviously you’re involved at some point. I’ll have to be. But you’re hoping that a lot of that can be handled by our people that are involved in other areas outside of just the coaching.” (link)

The Green Bay Packers are donating $250K to Wisconsin-Green Bay to endow the Mark Murphy Director of Athletics position. The gift is in honor of the team’s longtime President/CEO, who is set to retire in July, and is meant to kickstart a campaign to raise $1M to support Phoenix student-athletes. (link)

USC’s football program committed NCAA violations when it exceeded the allowable number of coaches over two academic years, according to an agreement released by the Committee on Infractions. As a result of the violations, the parties also agreed that Trojans HC Lincoln Riley violated head coach responsibility rules. In this case, however, some of the violations occurred before rules changes effective in January 2023 that shifted head coach responsibility rules from a rebuttable presumption to automatic attachment. Because Riley was not personally involved in the violations and demonstrated that he promoted an atmosphere of compliance and monitored his staff, Riley rebutted his presumed responsibility for the violations occurring before the rules change. For the same reasons, the parties also agreed that a suspension penalty for Riley was not appropriate. Penalties do include one year of probation, a $50K fine, and a reduction in countable athletically related activities for the football program by 24 hours during the 2023-24 season, among others. Cheating is becoming more common on college campuses thanks to AI, and The Chronicle of Higher Education’s Beth McMurtrie writes: “Talk to professors in writing-intensive courses, particularly those teaching introductory or general-education classes, and it sounds as if AI abuse has become pervasive. [Louisville professor Amy] Clukey said she feels less like a teacher and more like a human plagiarism detector, spending hours each week analyzing her students’ writing to determine its authenticity. But it’s not AI that has a lot of professors worried. It’s what lies behind that willingness to cheat. … Students are working long hours while taking full course loads. They doubt their ability to perform well.” Additionally, “they believe they will not be punished — or not punished harshly — if caught. And many, it seems, don’t feel particularly guilty about it.” In an online course, Clukey estimates that more than half of her students have plagiarized with AI. “When it’s that widespread, it’s a culture. It’s not just an individual student, one out of an entire class or two out of the entire class. It is so many. And when I talk to some undergrads, they’re like, ‘Everybody does it.’” All that said, McMurtrie notes it’s still difficult to determine whether students are cheating more now than in the past. “Some research documented a spike in cheating in online courses during the pandemic. Another study, which surveyed high-school students before and after ChatGPT’s arrival, did not find an increase in cheating over time. Other studies done before 2020 suggest that cheating may have fallen since the 1990s or early 2000s. Still, data is cold comfort for faculty members.” Lots more. (link)
