UMary moves quickly and promotes Assoc. AD for Mission Marcus Wagner to be the Marauders’ next AD. NCAA President Charlie Baker joins The Dan Patrick Show and says his goal as far as keeping member institutions together is “I want to keep the unhappy family unhappy and together, but happier than they were before.” He calls the House settlement a “pretty good example of an opportunity to create what I would describe as a framework that works for the power schools and works for the others as well.” Baker answers a question about the impact of Donald Trump’s return to the White House by noting that “I do think the president-elect has demonstrated he's a huge college sports fan. He doesn't just talk about it, he actually goes to the events. He went to the wrestling championship last year, he’s been to a bunch of the football bowl games, he's gone to the basketball stuff. I mean, this is somebody who clearly appreciates what college sports is about and I think that will help too.” Moving forward, Baker believes that “our ability to succeed is going to be driven to some extent by our ability to make it possible for the big schools to be what they are and who they are and to make sure that the other schools have the ability to be what they are – instead of trying to think about all of them as being the same because they’re not.” More from Baker. Republicans have named U.S. Senator John Thune (R-SD) as the chamber’s next majority leader. Thune beat out fellow Republicans John Cornyn from Texas and Rick Scott from Florida. (link); Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger notes this “paves the way for Ted Cruz to assume the chair of the Senate Commerce Committee. Cruz has said publicly that he will make college sports legislation a priority.” (link); Meanwhile, NBC News is projecting the GOP to win a majority in the House of Representatives, giving the party full control of Congress and the Oval Office. Mansfield has received a record $1M gift from former AD Roger Maisner to support student-athlete scholarships. $100K will be immediately used to support scholarships for Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Baseball and Softball. Maisner: “I’m a teacher/coach and I believe those words are synonymous, thus I am hoping to inspire my former students to step up and support Mansfield in this way also. This has been a goal for a long time. I’m honored, humbled, and excited to be able to support Mansfield. I hope this gift motivates and inspires students and student-athletes in how important it is to give back and set the example.” (link)

American International’s hockey team will return to DII at the end of the season. According to College Hockey Insider’s Mike McMahon, AIC’s men’s hockey team had the highest expenditures of any non-football team at the school, totaling over $1.77M. AIC’s program began in 1948 and was DII until 1998 when it joined DI and the MAAC. McMahon adds: “At a town hall in September, the school announced that it had not hit enrollment goals and did not know the financial impact it would have on the school. At the September town hall, the school said it would hold another town hall this month (November) to update more details on possible budget cuts. It appears the hockey program is a victim of these cuts. Moving back to Division II, AIC will forgo its partnership with the MassMutual Center in downtown Springfield. The move will also result in slashed scholarships. … This is a punch in the gut for college hockey.” Also: “I’m also guessing that a number of players will enter the portal and look to move to another D-I program, but this announcement comes at an awful time for them. Due to the House v. NCAA settlement, many rosters are about to be reduced to 26 players. Last week, the NCAA approved the eligibility of CHL players, so there are fewer DI roster opportunities.” (link)

More from ESPN’s Dan Murphy and Michael Rothestein on how roster limits are impacting Olympic sports teams, as Louisville (DI) Baseball HC Dan McDonnell says the limits will make it even more challenging to hold effective practices. "If you have 10 pitchers throw today and tomorrow, you literally can't scrimmage for three, four or five days. And so we're limited as it is with how many times we're able to intrasquad. So as a coach, there's a competitive side that concerns us with 34." In-season, McDonnell could see a world where teams cancel or forfeit games due to a lack of healthy players, particularly pitchers. Coaches also say they are disappointed they might have to eliminate spots for student-athletes willing to pay their own tuition for a chance to be a part of a DI team, with McDonnell remarking: “That's where I have the hardest time of capping a roster. Not even talking about development and scrimmaging and having enough players and all that stuff. I hate it for kids that want to be a part of your program, and now you're going to have to say, ‘I'm sorry, you can't.’” Meanwhile, Cal Lutheran (DIII) Women’s Soccer HC Frank Marino points out some players who previously would’ve played in DI may end up at DII or DIII schools, where there are no roster limits. "Where I think this is actually going to help is for those recruits, I think if the [youth] clubs do their job, they are going to push those mid-major, lower-end DI recruits to the top DII's and D-III's. And I actually think it's going to better the level of DII and DIII soccer. And I also think it's going to better the experience for those student-athletes." (link)

+ WRAL reports how Saint Augustine’s is using its $7M loan from Gothic Ventures, with $3M towards past and future payroll, $1.8M to the Department of Education, $600K for student refunds and more. The loan comes at a 24% interest rate, plus a 2% loan management fee and matures on June 30, 2025, with the ability to extend that until the end of the 2025 calendar year. (link)
