#7: Simon Fraser will discontinue its FB program, with President Johnson stating: "This is a difficult decision, and not one taken lightly. With the recent announcement that the team has not been invited to continue in the Lone Star Conference, we do not have a conference to play in beginning in 2024. The ongoing uncertainty creates an unacceptable experience for students. The university has carefully considered all available options and as a leadership team we concluded that football is no longer a feasible sport for SFU. ... SFU is Canada's only NCAA team. We are committed to excelling in the NCAA Division II in 18 varsity sports, with more than 300 student-athletes. ... #4: Former Gannon MBB HC Jefferson is suing the university seeking payment for the remainder of his contract through March 2026, which was signed in July. Upon his termination by HR, Jefferson declined to sign a separation agreement that would have compensated him through June in exchange for not suing GU. (link)

#3: Simon Fraser is investigating concerns raised by WSOC student-athletes with the program and HC Hamel. During this time, the Red Leafs program will be “under the direction of other members of the athletics staff.” AD Hanson, in part: “As an institution committed to delivering an exceptional student-athlete experience, we find the allegations very troubling. Student-athlete safety and wellbeing is our priority. SFU Athletics is conducting a thorough investigation, which includes working with our student-athletes to understand the situation and ensure they are receiving the support and services they need.” (link)

#2: Cal Poly Humboldt has retained an outside firm to look into allegations against MBB HC Norwood and the program, “In addition to the inquiries being conducted by a number of campus units, including Intercollegiate Athletics,” per the TImes-Standard’s Matson who reports further on accusations of misconduct by Norwood, with an anonymous student-athlete stating: “Coach (Tae) Norwood should not be qualified to be in a leading position at a state-regulated university.” Matson also recounts multiple student-athletes’ reports of intimidation ahead of the end of season surveys, lack of meals both on-campus and on the road due to a lengthy practice schedule or long travel schedule, a lack of acknowledgement of Senior Night which a statement reasoned as “unforeseen logistical problems,” and more.
