Birmingham-Southern will remain open after securing close to $46M in pledges and donations as BSC continues to work to get its endowment to $200M, with Board of Trustees Chair Thompson noting: “We have been working closely with our allies in state and local government to secure bridge funding.” President Coleman says the college is working to hire faculty and staff to “to ensure that we are delivering the full BSC experience this fall,” adding BSC will go public with the public phase of its fundraising campaign soon. State legislators are still mulling the possibility of assisting BSC, although no bills are currently on the table. (link, link)

NCAA News & Notes:

+ More from last month’s DIII Strategic Planning and Finance Committee as the committee supported a more aggressive revenue forecasting model than currently in place, as NCAA broadcast revenues will increase in FY25, to spend more on championships and Enrichment Fund initiatives. Alma President Abernathy updated the group on the latest regarding the DIII Philosophy Statement revamp, with a draft included. Regarding event cancellation insurance, DIII is currently using supplemental insurance for over $48K annually to cover ticket and radio revenues with a $1.5M payout, as opposed to participating in the NCAA captive insurance collective for around $250K per year. The Management and Presidents Councils will discuss an additional $49K policy to cover total media broadcast revenues with a $3.6M payout. More. (link) 

+ The DIII Championships Committee approved a MTEN AQ waiver for NJAC and WIAC members to transition the former’s AQ bid to the latter without the two-year waiting period, noting the consistency of the institutions competing led the committee to rule “that it would not be necessary for these seven members to serve another waiting period and approved the waiver request.” The committee also approved in-region waiver requests for Colorado College M&W Lacrosse and Emory WTEN, while the committee is “concerned with requests for in-region waivers in general, believing that the information provided sometimes does not allow the committee to determine whether an institution is making enough of a good-faith effort to overcome the scheduling challenges they face. Accordingly, the committee agreed to discuss during its June meeting what kind of documentation could be required for future requests that may better inform these decisions.” (link, link)
+ The DIII Membership Committee reaffirmed the current sport sponsorship enrollment threshold calculation. (link) 

The U.S. Department of Education has proposed regulations that would prohibit schools from “wholesale bans on transgender athletes that keep them from participating on teams that align with their gender identity,” ESPN’s Lavigne reports. The proposed regulations would instead give schools flexibility to adopt policies based on grade, sport, and level of competition to ensure opportunities for transgender students while recognizing the need to ensure fairness and prevent sports-related injuries. From the department’s release: “One-size-fits-all policies that categorically ban transgender students from participating in athletics consistent with their gender identity across all sports, age groups, and levels of competition would not satisfy the proposed regulation.” The proposed regulations will be open for public comment for 30 days, and Lavigne notes a timeline for their effective date has yet to be determined. Congresswomen Sherrill (D-NJ) and Salazar (R-FL) have introduced the Women in NCAA Sports (WINS) Act, which would “establish a 16-member congressional commission to study equality in the NCAA’s operation of tournaments and other programs for which there are men’s and women’s divisions” and make a final report to Congress, Sports Illustrated’s Dellenger reports. The report must include a “comparison of the NCAA’s treatment of men’s and women’s teams in postseason tournaments and other programs including venues and equipment provided for games and practices; lodging and transportation; media contracts; licensees, sponsors and overall budgets.” It also must include an analysis of the NCAA policies that affect gender equity and an “overview of federal government support for the NCAA and recommendations for improved federal oversight of the NCAA’s promotion of equality.” More. Washington & Jefferson cancels the remainder of its MLAX season. AD McGuinness: “We have made this difficult decision based upon the advice of our medical personnel and the safety of the student-athletes on our roster. Over half of our 2023 roster is sidelined for a minimum of three weeks. Our priority is to provide safe, competitive opportunities for our student-athletes and our coaching staff is determined to continue to build roster growth for future seasons. This is not a decision we have taken lightly, but due to the physical nature of a sport like men's lacrosse, it is a necessary decision.” (link)

Wisconsin-River Falls removes the interim tag from WBB HC Lyman who led the Falcons to its first winning season since 2017-18. AD Lanning: “Over the past four years, she has helped elevate the profile and competitiveness of Falcon women's basketball, and I look forward to watching the program continue to grow under her leadership.” (link)

+ A report from the AAUP finds that average salaries for full-time faculty members (all ranks combined) increased 4.1% this year, the biggest YoY uptick since 1990–91; however, real average salaries for full-time faculty members decreased 2.4%, marking the third consecutive year that wage growth has fallen short of inflation. Average salaries for full-time faculty members increased 4.5% among public institutions, 3.8% among private-independent institutions, and 2.7% among religiously affiliated institutions. For continuing full-time faculty members – those employed in fall 2021 and remaining employed in 2022 – average salaries increased 4.8% in nominal terms, but decreased 1.7% in real terms, after adjusting for inflation.
