Fordham officially announces former Akron AD Charles Guthrie as its next AD. President Tania Tetlow: "In every program he's led, Charles has created an impressive record of caring for the student-athletes, coaches, and athletic staff, promoting a culture of athletic and academic achievement, while building excitement from donors. We look forward to seeing him nurture confidence and talent in our Rams, and raise the University's profile in our conferences and the NCAA. We're delighted to welcome Charles and his family to the Fordham family." Guthrie adds: "Returning to New York and joining an institution as prestigious as Fordham is a full-circle moment in my life. I am committed to working steadfastly on behalf of our students, coaches, and the Fordham community to build on the University's tradition of excellence both on and off the field." (link)

Portland State has promoted Deputy AD Matt Billings to AD, and President Ann Cudd remarks: "In Matt Billings, Portland State University has an Athletics Director who knows the university, understands our culture and has ambitious plans for our programs. I'm excited to welcome him into this role and look forward to his steady leadership and working with him to ensure that Athletics will remain an engaged and supportive partner for the entire campus community." Billings: “Portland State is a special place for myself and my wife, Christi. This is our home and we feel very fortunate to be a part of this amazing group of student-athletes, coaches and staff. We will do it the right way each and every day. I will work tirelessly to tell the amazing story about this department." (link)

Northwestern has released more details for the $850M reconstruction of Ryan Field, which could “launch a new type of [college football] stadium design, focused on enhancing fan experiences and incorporating elements from recent NFL stadium builds,” per ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg. A video tour of the stadium shows off the amenities, including a European soccer-style canopy that protects fans from weather and amplifies noise, several premium options, restaurants, street fairs and lots more. (link - article, link - video renderings & overview); Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams observes Ryan Field will boast two “notable and almost contradictory superlatives. Upon its completion in 2026, it will be the most expensive college football stadium ever built. It will also have the fewest seats among the 34 Power Two teams. Specifically, there will be 35K seats, down 12K from its previous capacity and 42K seats smaller than the average SEC or Big Ten venue. What was Northwestern’s rationale for the design? “First, there are some practical considerations. Geometrically, without a 40K-seat upper bowl, the entire stadium can be closer to the action, allowing for better sightlines. Financially, upper bowl seats are the most expensive to build and typically produce the least revenue. More broadly, however, attendance across college football is down about 13% since 2010, and many schools with bigger venues struggle to fill the upper reaches of their stadiums. The bulk of the ticket money is generated from premium seating—suites, box seats and other hospitality areas—and the new Ryan Field will have four different tiers of those pricier options.” Wildcats benefactor Patrick Ryan Jr.: “So the question is: How do you invest in something that’s not just putting more people in the rafters? You get rid of the worst seats, but create better experiences for everyone who is there. That’s the trend I think we’re going to see.” More. (link)

As part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s settlement with the NBA, 13 Big 12 football games and 15 men’s basketball games per year will move from ESPN’s streaming platform to the linear channels of TNT and TBS. The sublicensing deal starts in the fall of 2025 and runs for six seasons. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger: “Weekly kickoff times are still unclear, but 10 of the 13 games will be Big 12 conference matchups. The Big 12 games will be simulcast on the streaming service Max. … Perhaps overshadowed in the NBA’s announcement, the Big 12 piece is a significant boon for the conference. The deal shifts football games scheduled to air on ESPN+ streaming to more visible linear channels, gives the league a fourth network partner and positions the conference well in its next television contract negotiations, [Big 12 Commissioner Brett] Yormark said.” Yormark adds: “This is additive to what ESPN and Fox bring us. That’s why this is a great deal. Any addition to both is complementary and will lead to more promotion and marketing around the Big 12 and conference brands.” (link)

James Moore & Co. Partner Katie Davis notes the IRS released its statistics on excise taxes paid for 2023 and explains: “The number of entities & total tax paid on the Compensation Excise Tax decreased compared to 2022. Although some public colleges & universities shed their 501c3 status, it seems unlikely to account for this decline. Stats on the section 4960 excise tax on excess compensation per The Tax Law of Colleges and Universities: 2023: 1,274 organizations paid $569,745,191; 2022: 1,710 organizations paid $670,899,001; 2021: 516 organizations paid $210,061,282; 2020: 302 organizations paid $96,168,764. Once referred to as the ‘Nick Saban rule,’ the tax law that went into effect left some loopholes and inconsistency in how this has been treated. … It will be interesting to see whether the TCJA gets renewed or sunsets under the next presidential administration. It's possible this rule could eventually go away. Schools have used techniques to reduce their tax liability, including royalty payments for the license of a coach's NIL and loans for split dollar life insurance. Some public universities have also considered whether to give up their 501c3 status entirely (a complex heavy lift.)” (link)

+ Boise State Football HC Spencer Danielson says he doesn’t talk to recruits about revenue-sharing: “I’m very open with guys, and I don’t promise that stuff through recruiting. I am all about ‘this is where you’ll be developed to be the best version of yourself.’ Yes, (revenue-sharing) is coming for us as signing day and things happen. Absolutely we’re going to have to walk that path. But I don’t want to weave through the guys recruiting-wise that just want to go somewhere because they’re making more money than the next place. Because it is my job to take care of this team, and that’s what I tell my staff and our administration. It is my job number-one at the end of the season to keep our best players right here in Boise, Idaho. … Then, second to that, is recruiting. And that will never get gray for me. That will never become any different, because I believe in that. You come here and perform the way we want you to and do it for this team, we take care of those guys first. In regards to some of the stuff coming out, it’s exciting. Jeramiah has done a phenomenal job, we have a ton of support. So it’s there, but I have not been involved in those conversations with our recruits. I tell them that’s there, but I don’t promise anything to these young men. I promise them a shot to compete.” (link)

Legal Matters…
+ Utah lawmakers are asking Utah State to join a lawsuit filed by several Mountain West volleyball student-athletes against the conference which alleges the league, San Jose State, and the NCAA violate federal law by diminishing sports opportunities for women. Utah Governor Spencer Cox, Senate President J. Stuart Adams and House Speaker Mike Schultz say USU joining the suit would send “a clear message.” A joint statement from the trio reads, in part: “Female athletes deserve the right to a safe playing field, fair competition, and equal opportunities. The NCAA Mountain West Conference and other institutions across the nation have failed to take action, thereby undermining vital protections and putting female athletes at risk. We will continue to defend our female athletes.” (link)

It’s one of the best days of the year: Army West Point has revealed its football uniforms for next month’s Army-Navy game: “Inspired by the 101st Airborne Division, we will honor the relentless fighting force of the #ScreamingEagles.” The jerseys include a patch that reads “Bastogne” in honor of the role the Screaming Eagles played in turning the tide of the Battle of the Bulge. The nameplate on the back reads “ARMY!” in an homage to General Anthony McAullife’s response of “NUTS!” to the German commander’s demand of surrender of the town. Awesome. (link)

This year’s Pop-Tarts Bowl will feature three edible mascots with the MVP getting the honor of choosing which gets eaten. The choices are frosted hot fudge sundae, frosted wild berry and a third mystery flavor. Pop-Tarts Director of Marketing Heidi Ray: “The first Pop-Tarts Bowl became one of the year’s biggest memes, and since then, our edible mascot has popped up on red carpets, TV commercials, sold-out Halloween costumes and it continues to get brought up during big cultural moments. And fans are hungry for more.” D1.prediction: The third mystery flavor must be cinnamon, which everyone knows is the superior popped tart. (link)

U.S. District Court Judge Sean Jordan of Sherman, Texas, on Friday permanently blocked the Biden administration U.S. Department of Labor rule that took effect in July, saying it improperly bases eligibility for overtime pay on workers’ wages rather than their job duties. In June, Jordan said the rule was likely invalid and temporarily blocked it from being applied to Texas state employees. The state of Texas and business groups representing a range of industries had filed lawsuits challenging the rule, which had been consolidated. Jordan, in part: “The Department may impose some limitations on the scope of the EAP Exemption’s operative terms, but it cannot enact rules that replace or swallow the meaning those terms have.” Most importantly: “The rule would have required employers to pay overtime premiums to salaried workers who earn less than $1,128 per week, or about $58,600 per year, when they work more than 40 hours in a week, beginning Jan. 1, 2025, and it had temporarily raised the threshold to about $44,000 per year on July 1. The previous threshold of about $35,500, which was set in 2019, will now be back in effect.” (link)

San Diego State AD JD Wicker sat down with AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to reflect on the values of “patience and persistence” when guiding an athletics department through times of change. Wicker and Garcia Cichosz discuss recent success for the Aztecs, how to stay on top once a high level of athletic and academic success has been achieved and the strategy behind building a program into a national brand. Wicker also offers insight on communication strategies with student-athletes, campus partners and staff; discusses how he redefined the “Aztec way” when hiring a Football HC; and shares his “fill your battery” moments and habits that help him maintain momentum. When hiring new staff members, Wicker explains that “culture is very important to us. We have a very distinct culture. I feel like in our department it's a family style of culture. The great thing about San Diego State is we’re all in one building, all of our sports, all of our functional areas, so they're going to have to come in and want to be a part of this larger group and not just be someone who’s siloed. We also have a pretty rigorous interview process. … We just hired a new deputy for kind of external areas – marketing, media relations, those areas – they had to do a presentation and all staff got to come in and participate in that and ask questions. So, we really try to put them in front of as many people as we can and help them understand that you're not just coming in and I'm just in my area. I've got to be a part of the larger department.” More on ADU. (link)

UCF Deputy Athletics Director of Strategy and Competitive Success Chris McFarlane joins Connect's Kristen Eargle on this week's edition of The Career Hustle. They discuss McFarlane’s transition from Deputy AD for External Relations and Business Development, moments that have shaped him throughout his career, how he adapts to various leadership styles, what he looks for when hiring new staff members and coaches and more. McFarlane explains that “when I’m at a game, whether it’s home or on the road, part of what I’m paying attention to is the coach on the opposite sideline – how they handle themselves on the sideline, how much do I think they're actually doing because it may not always be the head coach that I'm paying attention to. It may be an associate head coach or an assistant coach, and usually it's with no job and no thought of a job coming open anytime soon. But it's my responsibility to always be prepared. It’s a constant evaluation and I like to see how people are acting and responding to certain things when they're not expecting me to be paying attention to that.” McFarlane also talks about his role as the “Chief Connector,” noting he may not always be the subject matter expert, but “I do have an ability to try to connect dots and bring people together to break down barriers and to solve problems. So I think that allows me to lead and really connect to all of my colleagues.” More. (link)

Missouri Executive AD/CFO Andrew Roberts joins the News & Brews Sports Biz podcast with James Moore & Co. and says the biggest change he’s seen over the past 12 years is the compliance team used to be able to take several decisions off his plate. “Over time, the rulebook has really gotten ripped up and things have continued to just move to program autonomy. You know, ‘You guys make the decisions,’ which really means that resources define what we can and cannot do. So, more and more the pressure to make decisions has shifted over to the business office. I kind of saw that happening before I was really the decision-maker but certainly around 2018-2019, and then as I became a CFO in 2020, it just felt like everybody was looking to me to say, ‘Can we do this? Can we do that?’ Because compliance was no longer saying, ‘Yeah, they were saying, ‘Hey, it's possible, you have to ask Andrew if we have the money for it.’” Roberts says Tigers AD Laird Veatch has outlined his vision for how MU will move forward, which has “teased some changes that are probably coming and, frankly, are long overdue here at Missouri. And a lot of that's going to be around ticket pricing and how we manage our donations and fundraising efforts. So, [we’re] really focused on the revenue generation side. I know he's touched on expense management as well and we've certainly made commitments to our leadership here to do that, and we've got some thoughts around how we might tackle that. … I’ll kind of steal Laird’s words: we’re not necessarily talking about cutting back and doing less, it’s just trying to really identify what matters. … We’re not going to out-money everybody in our league.” Full podcast. Princeton Women’s Lacrosse HC Jenn Cook points out the ripple effect of conference realignment can be felt in the Ivy League most notably through the difficulty of scheduling high-quality opponents. “It was probably the most challenging scheduling-out-of-conference year that I’ve had in my 17 years as a coach. It definitely has to do with conference realignment and conference expansion, primarily.” The Daily Princetonian’s Doug Schwartz notes scheduling for lacrosse normally starts around November and ends around June; however, the schedule this time around wasn’t finalized until September. Cook: “For us, there are always historical matchups that we like to play. You know, that’s your UVAs, Loyolas, Penn States, and Maryland. Unfortunately, this year, a date to play Maryland just did not mesh for us.” Cook also explains that league coaches work together to help schedule quality opponents. “For us, like our coaching group within the Ivy League, we meet and we’re constantly communicating. You want your league to be strong … You get your league strong by everybody within the league playing really quality opponents outside of conference.” (link)

When it comes to setting up a super league, Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes asks: Is there any strategy out there that doesn’t suggest getting rid of “middle men?” Crakes’ question comes in response to CBS’ Dennis Dodd noting last week that ACC and Big 12 presidents and chancellors were expected to hear Project Rudy proposals directly from proponents. Crakes adds: “And does anyone know of an instance where – once that strategy was pursued and executed – truly resulted in that objective?” (link)

Former Fox Sports President Bob Thompson indicates he’s “not sure I understand the ESPN sublicense of Big 12 games to TNT at this point. Guess it depends on the windows. I assume ESPN will keep the Saturday night window. One thing that is for sure…there can be no doubt that ESPN is all in on the SEC. … TNT wanting Big 12 is easy. They need to replace NBA events and Inside the NBA. Don't understand the ESPN angle. Maybe they wanted the NBA show from TNT more than they wanted those Big 12 games. If I was launching an ESPN DTC service in August of 2025 I would be looking to make the event lineup as strong as possible along with keeping ESPN+ strong.” (link)

TBS and Warner Bros. Discovery have settled their breach of contract lawsuit against the NBA. Sportico’s Michael McCann notes the settlement will “preserve WBD’s 35-year relationship with the league for at least the next 11 years. A person familiar with the settlement told Sportico that the new arrangement contains many features, some of which are governed by an 11-year-agreement with other features contemplated within a five-year agreement. Of greatest interest to NBA fans, the famed Inside the NBA will continue. The show will be produced by TNT Sports, which will also hire the on-air talent and make programming and editorial decisions, and air on ESPN/ABC. The new arrangement also includes a continuation and enhancement of the digital partnership between NBA and TNT TV, sales partners and other parties. In addition, WBD will acquire the rights for NBA games outside the U.S., including in Nordic countries and parts of Latin America. The deal also includes new methods of using NBA intellectual property content, expanded rights for Bleacher Reports’ House of Highlights rights and over a five-year term, $350M for services, promotion, programming and marketing WBD is providing the NBA, as it does now, and in advertising inventory that the NBA can use across WBD networks and digital platforms globally. Meanwhile, the NBA can now move to implement its new TV arrangement without the cloud of a legal battle.” (link)

Puck’s John Ourand points out the leverage the NFL enjoys with networks won’t translate to streamers, telling The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand: “If Fox didn’t have the NFL, FS1…goes under almost. One of the reasons that Skydance paid so much for Paramount is because they have an NFL deal that extends out another decade. Traditional media companies, their whole existence relies on these sports leagues. Because of that, these leagues have an incredible amount of leverage over them and they can go and get the kind of prices that the NBA got, they can get the kind of prices that the NFL got. … Having the leagues go after [streaming], they’re going to find that the whole leverage aspect of what they’ve enjoyed for the past several decades is gonna be turned on its head, and that’s where I think that they should be weary.” Ourand goes on to say: “What the NFL did recently, and it paid off well for them. … Every single one of the TV networks has a package, Amazon has a package, now Netflix has the Christmas Day games, Google/YouTube has the Sunday Ticket. So all of a sudden, there are just enough packages for just enough people that are interested. But it’s like buying a house. The more bidders that you get, the higher the price goes up. And kind of culling that and just creating more of a fervent bidding market could potentially get more money out, I think.” (link)
