U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) reiterates that NCAA reform will be a priority: “Right now, the current world of college sports is the WIld West [with] name, image and likeness, open transfer portals. It is, I think, endangering the future and viability of college athletics. I think Congress needs to step in and legislate. When the Democrats were in the majority, it just wasn’t a priority for them. It will be a priority. We are going to address it. As chairman [of the Commerce Committee], I can convene hearings. I’m in charge of every hearing the Commerce Committee has. I invite the witnesses for the hearings. I can call up markups. I can decide what bills get marked up and what bills don’t, and it gives you the ability to drive an agenda that is just qualitatively different.” (link, link)

Southwest Minnesota State AD Jen Flowers sits down with BOSCA’s Jim Abbott to discuss working with a diverse senior staff, her priorities and more. Flowers believes having staff with longevity at SMSU and those earlier in their tenures are both a challenge and an opportunity. “I feel like finally into year three now, people have been able to see me and see my heart, my vision, my goals and I feel like we're all getting on the same page. That doesn't mean that we don't disagree. It doesn't mean that we don't throw out some ideas and then kick them to the curb and say what we've been doing longer is the right thing, but it's really important for me to engage all of them in the conversation so that my young folks can hear the why from from the folks who've been here for a long time and then vice versa and then figure out where we land sometimes in the middle and sometimes we go a different direction. We have a group that's willing to work together. I'm so fortunate to have a staff that has the same vision that I do, which is just to make this place as good as it can be. If we keep that as our overriding goal, it all shakes itself out when we kind of come back to our why and back to what we are doing this for.” Given the AD job varies from day to day, Flowers tries to have at least two hours a day with her office door open to be available for everyone. More: “I have a great staff and that's probably the area I'm most proud of – I'm starting to delegate a little bit better. I think when you start a job you sort of innately feel like you have to do everything so that you can show people you can do it or learn how people do things or all of those things. I've started to figure out that maybe I don't have to be at that meeting but I can send this person or just taking some load off of me in some different places and my staff is really growing with me in that space and I appreciate that.” Full conversation on BOSCA. The U.S. Department of Education says it has entered the final beta testing period of the 2025–26 Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Beta 4 “will build on the successful results from the first three beta periods. Since Oct. 1, more than 14,000 students have successfully submitted their 2025–26 FAFSA forms. The Department has successfully processed the forms and sent over 81,000 records to more than 1,850 schools and 43 states. The Department has not found any critical bugs during the beta testing period, and the FAFSA system is working end-to-end. … before the end of the month, the Department will expand online beta testing to all students and families, consistent with industry best practices. The final testing period will have two phases: Beta 4 and Expanded Beta 4.” December 1 for the full release is still the target. (link)

In addition to its changes to Men’s Ice Hockey, American International will discontinue its Men’s Wrestling and Women’s Tennis programs after this academic year. The Bluesky app went from having a little over 6M users to 15M in the last 90 days and hit number one in the iOS App Store this week, and Awful Announcing’s Sean Keeley points out that’s a “far cry from the 335M active users on X, but according to Similarweb, 115K US-based web visitors deactivated their X accounts after Election Day and that company’s user base and appeal are in decline.” The Ringer’s Howard Beck tells The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch: “The current owner of Twitter’s politics aside, his role in the recent election aside, the ways he has changed the platform aside, I think Twitter peaked probably 5-10 years ago, period.” Keeley notes that in the sports media world, new arrivals to Bluesky include ESPN’s Mina Kimes, Sarah Spain, and Benjamin Solak, Meadowlark Media’s Pablo Torre, FS1’s Rachel Nichols, The Athletic’s Nate Tice, and The Ringer’s Danny Kelly, among others. “The sports media influx seemed to touch every major sports outlet and organization. … To be fair, Meta’s Threads has also been seeing a recent uptick in users and has a sizable advantage over Bluesky (over 200M users). However, Mark Zuckerberg’s Twitter clone also has a reputation for being the place where brands and your parents hang out. As Jamelle Boiue might say, Threads just doesn’t have the juice.” Beck adds: “The current owner of Twitter has absolute contempt for journalism and for journalists. Because of that, the site has been re-engineered in a way that is to our detriment or certainly is not to our benefit in the way that a previous version of Twitter once was.” (link)
