JohnCanzano.com’s namesake releases his in-depth interview with Oregon AD Rob Mullens, which covers thoughts on a number of high-profile industry items. On how Mullens & his team are considering roster caps & scholarships: “We’re probably at a point here where, to your question, we’re going to have to be much more strategic in how we do that because we don’t have unlimited resources. It will be important for us to invest in the areas where we do generate revenue. We have one sport that makes money here that funds the other 19. We’ll need to continue to compete at the highest level in football in order to help fund those other 19 sports.” How about innovative revenue opportunities? “Everything’s on the table, and that’s what we were trying to communicate. Obviously, the lifeblood of an athletic program is ticket sales and donations. So those things are always going to be extremely important. The media contracts are set. The local sponsorships are somewhat set. But we are going to look at things differently. You referenced field logos, maybe even jersey patches. Where there are opportunities that we’ve been somewhat hesitant to do in the past, we will now look to because as we see college athletics change to remain at the highest level, you're going to need to be able to generate this $20.5 million to get to the full cap.” Mullens goes on to say that a “talent fee” - like Tennessee has announced plans to implement - is not on the table for the Ducks, nor is the full-out cutting of sport programs. Seattle U. announces it will discontinue Men’s & Women’s Indoor Track & Field, as well as Men’s Tennis, at the end of the current academic year. Key context: “Along with the discontinuation of the three sport programs, sprints, jumps and throws in outdoor track will be phased out as student athletes who compete in these events exhaust their eligibility. The men's and women's cross country and outdoor track programs will continue, as will women's tennis.” University President Eduardo Peñalver & AD Shaney Fink “This year of transition has been marked by thoughtful reflection and difficult choices. Amid the ongoing changes in the intercollegiate sports landscape, as well as our commitment to strategically align resources with our greatest priorities, SU Athletics has conducted a comprehensive review to ensure we are best positioned to support our student athletes and sustain competitive excellence for years to come.” (link)

Washington Senior Assoc. AD for Sport Administration Charles Small joins Connect's Kristen Eargle for a look inside his career path and perspective. Small, the former Valparaiso AD who has also led DEI initiatives at multiple universities, discusses how he approaches adapting to leadership styles, choosing opportunities and his focus on earning trust and measuring success. When evaluating his next career steps, Small says he thinks long-term and looks at the big picture. “I zoom out and zoom in. What’s the best version of me in the next X period? Is that five, 10 years? And then what am I going to do on a daily basis to get better? And I feel like if you're true to that process, you will be prepared when opportunities come to you. So, when that opportunity presented itself, I felt confident I felt like I was ready. I was looking for alignment, I was looking for a pathway to success. And I know once I saw that I thought I had a pathway to success, I felt like there would be alignment in terms of values. I talked to [Iowa State AD] Jamie Pollard at the time when I was at Iowa State, and I talked to some other mentors and felt like this is an opportunity for me to make this move and it felt in line with goals I have for my family. It felt in line with goals I had professionally.” When it comes to adapting to new leadership styles, Small says he uses the 1-3-1 mode. “I think about an issue. I think about three possible solutions, and I come with my strongest recommendation. And I think over time, you’re able to prove yourself that you’re able to make solid decisions and you’re also aligned with that leader.” More on Connect. (link)

USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz with the biggest bonus winners of the weekend: Iowa State HC Matt Campbell adds another $250K to his tally on the year; Oregon’s Dan Lanning gets $200K for the Ducks’ 11th win of the regular season, which also triggers a 1-year contract extension worth $9.4M, all guaranteed; Rutgers’ HC Greg Schiano leads the Scarlet Knights to bowl eligibility and gets a $100K bonus for doing so; Colorado HC Deion Sanders snags $100K for the Buffs 8th regular season win; North Carolina HC Mack Brown picks up a $75K payday for bowl eligibility; add $75K for Clemson’s Dabo Swinney, as well; Memphis HC Ryan Silverfield picks up automatic 1-year contract extension and $25K bonus as the Tigers get their 9th win. This takes his deal through 2029 and the extra year is currently set to be worth $2.8M ($1.68M guaranteed). Silverfield at $125K in bonuses this season. Several others at the $25K mark or below. With USC President Carol Folt announcing her decision to retire, the Los Angeles Times’ Ryan Kartje reflects on her impact on athletics and points out that “when Folt first took over, in July 2019, the department had not only been rocked by scandal, but also plagued by a decade of insularity and stagnation. … And Folt stepped in, determined to make waves immediately. Those sweeping efforts to reshape USC’s image didn’t always land among longtime employees in athletics, who felt she balked too often at USC’s deep traditions. Two former university administrators told me that, upon taking the job, Folt voiced her disapproval of the famed university slogan, ‘Fight on!’ She went so far as to have staffers engage university officials about phasing it out because it was ‘contentious’ — a request that, one official explained, ‘went over like a lead balloon.’” Still, Folt pressed forward with changes, parting ways with AD Lynn Swann and bringing in Mike Bohn before eventually signing off on the hire of Football HC Lincoln Riley. Kartje: “Folt made a more shrewd calculus at the conference level soon after hiring Riley as coach. As part of a committee exploring expansion with the Pac-12, Folt had already stood up against the idea of expanding the conference. The following summer, she would turn around and help engineer USC’s move to the Big Ten, a move that would usher in the end of the Pac-12 as we knew it.” Regarding the circumstances of Bohn’s departure, Kartje notes: “When Times columnist Dylan Hernández approached her after a news conference and tried to pose [questions about Bohn’s conduct], her office ended the interview and accused The Times of being ‘sexist.’ She is poised to ride that silence into retirement.” More. ESPN’s top college football broadcast team of Chris Fowler & Kirk Herbstreit had an interesting suggestion on how to handle fake injuries after a related questionable stop in play during last night’s Tennessee-Georgia game. Fowler: “Simple solution is, you come off like that, you’re done for the series. However long the drive lasts, you’re out. If you’re seriously hurt, you wouldn’t be able to come back anyway. If you’re not, you’re just done.” (link)

Ivy League endowments, many of which allocate outsized portions of their portfolios to private equity and venture capital, have underperformed the university average for the second straight year, according to Financial Times’ Sun Yu, who notes that some, including Yale and Princeton, are “lagging far behind their smaller peers, as the once-lucrative asset class suffers from a plunge in dealmaking and stock listings.” Yu points out that “six of the eight Ivy League universities reported returns in the 12 months ended June that stood below the higher education average of 10.3%, according to Cambridge Associates. … Yale and Princeton fared the worst by respectively yielding 5.7% and 3.9%. The underperformance follows an even weaker 2023 when no Ivy League school was able to match the 6.8% industry average. Yale gained 1.8% while Princeton lost 1.7% last year.” At issue, Yu explains, is that “most Ivy League endowments had earmarked more than 30%, and in the case of Yale and Princeton at least 40%, of their assets to PE and VC by the first half of this year. … In contrast, a survey of 121 university endowments by Cambridge Associates found their allocation to PE and VC had averaged 22% over the same period.” Former Texas/Texas A&M Investment Management Company CIO Britt Harris says it was “a huge anomaly” for most Ivy League endowments to generate negative or low single-digit returns last year when the risk-free 10-year US treasury yielded more than 4%. “People underestimate how volatile some of these private investments can be.” More. USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz reports that “members of U.S. House Democratic Women's Caucus sent [a] letter to Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona asking for clarity about how Title IX should be applied to NIL pay schools would be able to provide college athletes under proposed settlement of House and related cases. Letter to Cardona asks for reply by Dec. 5 re: To what extent would Title IX apply to direct athlete compensation?; Does Ed Dept agree that settlement’s damages distribution model should not be considered as compliant with Title IX for purposes of additional payments to current and future athletes?; What constitutes enough interaction btwn schools/athletes and collectives that would require Title IX to be applied and enforced?” (link); Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger adds: “The Caucus asks of the Department of Education many questions that college leaders have been asking the department for months. As an aside: the Department may not exist under the new incoming president.” (link)

Georgia AD Josh Brooks takes issue with the College Football Playoff ranking process: “We have to be humble in this process but I will say this, I know the committee made a statement that they had questions about the inconsistency of our team. I would question the inconsistency of their ranking process, quite frankly. But if you want to talk about consistency, what has been consistent has been the strength of our schedule and I would challenge any of them to think about any other team in that Top 12, what their schedule would look like had they gone on the road and played the games that we played. Even a neutral site at Clemson, a Top 20 team. A neutral site against your rival Florida. Doesn’t matter what the record of either team is in those games. And then going on the road, Kentucky, Alabama, Texas, Ole Miss. So that’s all I’ll say about that.” (link)

Following his first week on the job, new Pittsburgh AD Allen Greene pens a letter to Panther Nation thanking them for their warm welcome. “The energy I had in anticipation of ‘Day 1’ was already off the charts, and after spending the week engaged with our student-athletes, coaches, staff and supporters, my excitement has increased tenfold! As you know, Pitt is a special place with incredibly special people. I knew that from afar, but there’s nothing quite like experiencing Pitt passion firsthand.” (link)

ESPN’s Pete Thamel writes on Tulane’s continued football success under first-year head coach Jon Sumrall as university SVP/COO Patrick Norton comments: “[Athletics is] really important to our brand. Now, how do we capitalize on that? That's still, I think, in some ways to be determined. I mean, this is fairly recent for us, success from the Cotton Bowl, which was really an amazing experience for the university. One that we hadn't gone through in a very, very long time.” The Green Wave has hired Huron Consulting to assist with a “basic diagnosis” of the athletic department. Norton continues on why the university turned down overtures from the Pac-12: “We were leaving something that is more certain to less certain and frankly, it's not the Pac-12 that we always knew, that we grew up with that John Wooden and UCLA and USC. It just wasn't the same. I'm not saying that these schools aren't solid, very good schools, but it's not the same. And it was different than what we wanted, and so I think the decision wasn't that hard, but we listened.” Green Wave AD David Harris: “As you look at the next several years, and the changing landscape of college athletics, people feel that there's really a place for Tulane within the college football landscape and just overall being a stronger athletics brand. And so to be in this position is incredibly exciting. It's a big responsibility because you want to be a part of keeping the trajectory going up and keeping the excitement going and keeping the momentum going.” (link)

Kentucky Football HC Mark Stoops says for SEC head coaches “to be on the number at 85 (scholarship players) when the spring semester starts, to say that it’s going to be complicated is a severe understatement. … We would love our concentration to be on coaching and spending time with our players and being around that. That’s where all of us are still putting most of our time, but we have to – I have to – look at roster management.” Stoops went on to say to reporters that “due to the fact that you just asked the question, we need to have some conversation about this because it’s extremely hard. Knowing who’s leaving, knowing what you want to bring in the portal, that’s one thing, but then also high school. We’ve been thinking and talking about 105 and then 95 and then down to 85. I think if we all play by the same rules, we’re all good with it, but to say that we need to hit it, you know, right on the number at 85 starting the first day of spring semester will be a challenge. That’s a severe understatement.” Also from Stoops: “I took great pride in building the program on taking those two-, three-star guys, guys that we could get in the surrounding areas, and developing them into very good football players. But those days are over, and you better have a good team now. And you have to have the resources to get those players.” (link)

Oakland Men’s Basketball HC Greg Kampe talks to the Detroit News’ Carlos Monarrez about the changing landscape of college hoops: “I have ideas and thoughts, but I don't know where it's going. But I know this: I want to be a player in it. I want to have a say in it. I want to voice opinions and help create policy, because it's that important. [...] I spent my whole summer trying to raise money to buy players next year, and you can print that. I mean, think about that. The basketball coach at Oakland just told you I spent my WHOLE summer trying to raise money to buy players and I raised over $200,000 to buy players. Do I think I can do that again? No, I don't think I can do it again. I think what the Kentucky win did was gave us the clout to do that this year. [...] Our actions have all proven that it's about money. Nobody's saying it. Our actions have proven it's about money. So let's accept what it is. You're not going to change it. The toothpaste is out of the tube. You are not going to change it. So let's regulate it, and let's get it on track.” Lots more. (link)

With several football officiating decisions ranging from questionable to controversial to incorrect this season, The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner asked former Colorado/Washington/UCLA Football HC Rick Neuheisel about his opinion, particularly in relation to the BYU-Utah game. Neuheisel: “BYU’s still the undefeated team. You get a call like that…whether it’s the field judge or the side judge, throws the flag and bails them out with a holding call. You have to really want to call that. You have to really want to. I’m not calling anybody’s integrity into question. What I’m saying is you can’t have Big 12 officials doing that because Big 12 officials are trying to protect the Big 12 league. It’s creating a conflict. … What we need to go forward here… is we need a one-house, all-united officiating group run by the CFP. There’s plenty of money to handle it.” Neuheisel also proposes having all replays handled by one centralized office to avoid conflict of interest. “All these replays (would) go back to a mission control, much like they do in the NFL so you aren’t sitting there saying, ‘This is an ACC crew making an ACC-beneficial call. ‘This is a Big 12 crew making a Big 12-beneficial call.’ We can’t have that. The game’s too good.” (link)

Netflix’s continued foray into live sports streaming was last night’s boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul that had more than its fair share of buffering hiccups. More than 100K+ users reported network issues on the Downdetector website throughout the livestreaming, noting the slow buffering and network issues. Paul: “We crashed the site. This is the biggest event. Over 120 million people on Netflix.” Netflix declined to comment on the overall outcome of the event. The next big marker for the global streamer is a Christmas Day NFL matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs & Pittsburgh Steelers. (link)

Through the first nine days of the men’s basketball season, teams are averaging 104.6 points per 100 possessions, according to KenPom’s Ken Pomeroy, who adds: “Comparing the first nine days of the season to the first nine days of past years, this season’s start is easily the best, edging out the 2014 season which was at 103.8.” When predicting whether this will be a record-breaking offensive season, Pomeroy crunches the early numbers and explains that “in a normal year, a lot of the improvement in offense over the course of the season is due to shooting and turnovers. And given that shooting and turnovers are at their best numbers ever to this point in the season, there may not be that much improvement in offensive rating coming. In addition, we know that the change in the charge rules for secondary defenders has fundamentally improved offenses as well and that’s a change that’s already baked into the early season numbers.” That said, Pomeroy would “still bet that this season finishes at a record level, although it’s far from a given. A slightly more sophisticated model, assuming a non-linear relationship between early offensive rating and season offensive rating, and using some turnover and shooting information, indicates that it’s more likely than not that this season’s offense beats last season’s record. Furthermore, last season still had a decent increase despite starting out hot. I mean, there’s really no reason to explain why offense would get worse in coming weeks, other than officials deciding to call the charge rule from the 2010 rulebook.” (link)

Ōura last week acquired Sparta Science to “fuel the fastest-growing segment of its business: its enterprise customers using the Oura Teams dashboard,” according to SBJ’s Joe Lemire, who explains that “Sparta’s Trinsic software, which collects and analyzes health and fitness data from third-party sources, will be incorporated into Oura Teams.” Ōura Chief Commercial Officer Dorothy Kilroy tells Lemire: “We really see enterprise in our future, definitely sports teams, government, Department of Defense, but we also have huge ambitions in healthcare.” Kilroy describes Trinsic as “the meat of the acquisition” that will “give all of our enterprise customers access to this enhanced enterprise experience with data that we've not been able to do yet at a level that Trinsic has done.” Kilroy goes on to explain that Ōura sees the need to continue supporting athletes holistically: “We've continued to have a huge amount of inbound demand from different sports teams at a global level. We definitely see the opportunity to continue to expand that and integrate into their athlete management system. There's been an emphasis in sports about what was on the pitch for a long time, and I think now there's much more emphasis on what's off the pitch.” (link)
