Several prominent voices in Hawaii are voicing their displeasure with the dismissal of Rainbow Warriors AD Craig Angelos, including Mike Kawazoe, head of the Rainbow Collective, who says effective immediately he’ll be “taking down down all of my banners with my companies from UH and cutting off all money going towards athletics immediately.” Kawazoe says of Angelos: “I think he was the right man for the job, and I believed in the vision. Now I don’t know what the vision is. I don’t know where UH is headed. And sometimes in life, you’ve got to recognize a bad investment when you see it, and this looks like a bad investment. … I would be stunned for the university to give us an answer on why he was terminated. I think they're just going to say, ‘Hey, we let him go.’ I deserve an answer. I pour a lot of money into that. I want an answer from them.” Former ESPN SportsCenter anchor/UH alumnus Larry Beil also weighs in: “I’m shocked. Absolutely. Because last night I was reading about Craig’s accomplishments, and I shot him a quick text: ‘Hey, congratulations, you’re crushing it.’ He goes, ‘Thanks, except I’m getting fired tomorrow.’ And I was like, ‘What?’ I wrote, ‘You have to be kidding me,’ and he said, ‘No,’ and then proceeded to explain. He didn’t know much more than I did, which was a concern. All of the circumstances around this are unusual. … It takes a while to learn what’s going on in the state of Hawaii. I think everybody would agree to that. Just as [Angelos is] starting to get acclimated and doing some good things, the president decides to make this move. Why this and why now? I don’t know.” (link, link)

North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham pens a letter to fans outlining how the Tar Heels will approach the House settlement. UNC will seek to expand corporate partnerships, and fans can expect to see more logos on fields, courts, stadiums and arenas – and perhaps on uniforms. Additionally, the Rams Club will soon launch a new initiative to support additional scholarships and other endeavors. Other components of the strategy include new ticket models and opportunities, expanded alcohol sales, further monetizing athletic venues with special events, cost-containment measures, and university support. “Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the University has assisted the Athletics budget by delaying and then forgiving some facility debt repayment and transferring additional funds. With the changing financial model in college athletics, the University has committed to supporting our mission and providing some of the funds needed for the new revenue share. … Industry experts believe the final settlement of the House case is still more than five months away, and we are using this time as an opportunity to position Carolina as a leader in the future of college athletics. We are committed to sharing revenue, recognizing the teams that generate it and continuing to champion our long history of success.” (link)

Jacksonville State AD Greg Seitz Q&As with The Gadsden Times’ Maxwell Donaldson and says of the overall state of college sports: “Certainly, I'm always for players being able to get paid; I think they certainly deserve that. So, we will do everything that we can do to ensure that we are being competitive within Conference USA and our peer schools that we compete against in offering our recruits, our players that the schools we are playing against are doing. … In addition, I'm not sure just us, but all across FBS football, I'm not sure we've done a great job showing the value, what the actual dollars are to a college degree. Those scholarships, housing and that stuff for the last several years, I don't think we have done a very good job of you're walking out of here with a $150K education by the time that you add that up. It's not like the kids haven't been able to receive some benefits in the past, because they certainly have, but we've done a poor job of educating not only our student-athletes on that but the general public about that.” Regarding how Jax State will specifically approach the House settlement, Seitz explains: “I think with the roster limits, that's going to give us some clear guidance moving forward, where all Division I schools will be operating under the same umbrella. Now, there's certainly a difference when you look at Group of 5 schools and the Power 4 schools from a budgeting standpoint and how much we are going to be able to pay our kids. Our plan is we want to end up doing the most that we can to help our student-athletes.” The move to C-USA, Seitz explains, helps clear up some confusion. “When you compete in FCS football, a lot of people still think you're Division II, or don't quite understand; No, our basketball team has been competing for them to win a national championship, they would have to go through Kentucky, Duke, those schools.” More. Chattanooga AD/Football Championship Committee Vice Chair Mark Wharton sits down with Southern Conference Assoc. Commissioner for Brand Strategy and Broadcast Dave Friedman and admits that putting together the FCS Playoff bracket is a stressful endeavor. “I think there's going to be a lot of work, especially the seeding of the top 16 – not that the seeding of the top eight was easy by any means. But making sure we get those top 16 right and always those last four in – or the four out – take a lot of time. So, excited about Saturday, but it'll be a late, late night, probably early morning.” When it comes to assigning weight to big wins or bad losses, Wharton says both are taken into account. “Obviously I'm biased towards Mercer, but they didn't play the strongest schedule, and they could beat Furman next weekend and still not be a top eight seed because they're right on the line for our committee right now. But it certainly didn't help with their scheduling. And I get football scheduling is very, very difficult, but we look at that and we are able to use four metrics as far as strength of schedule and predictive scheduling; but I think that's going to weigh a lot when you get talking about the nuances of where they are.” Wharton says the committee does a good job of focusing only on this season but acknowledges it can be difficult to leave personal biases at the door. “But again, the resume’s the resume and we have a lot riding on it as far as ESPN, ABC and all the partners to make sure we have the two best teams in Frisco.” Full Q&A. UCF will dissolve The Kingdom NIL collective and bring the NIL operation in-house in anticipation of the House settlement. Knights AD Terry Mohajir: “This was a plan that we have been working on for a while based on all the information we’ve received through the [Big 12] conference offices regarding the House settlement. … We would still love for [people] to give to the Kingdom, but once July 1 hits, everything will be in-house and those donations will move to a recruiting fund for competitive success.” He adds: “We have a person that does analytics for us. We have a person in legal, a person who handles business operations, people that helped generate revenues, that will look at the new commercial business or new opportunities for our NIL licensees, which are our student-athletes. They’ll be working with all of our different sports.” (link)

The Indiana Board of Trustees voted on Friday to name the planned $110M athletics center on the IU Indianapolis campus after the late James T. Morris, who served on the board for multiple decades. IU President Pam Whitten: “No individual epitomized the idea of service to IU and the city of Indianapolis more than Jim Morris. This recognition is only fitting for our vision of an arena that will serve both the university and the community. It was Jim’s advocacy at the Statehouse that helped propel this project forward, and now generations of IU students and campus visitors will benefit.” (link)

Oregon State is offering fans a buy one, get one free ticket deal for Thursday’s men’s basketball tip against Oregon. A household can purchase up to eight tickets for the Ducks game and secure eight free tickets for any game remaining on the Beavers’ schedule. The school designated three upper-level sections at Gill Coliseum for the free tickets. During the first two days, about 200 tickets have been purchased, with about half choosing their free ticket for the Gonzaga game, according to The Oregonian’s Nick Daschel. OSU Deputy AD for External Operations Sara Elcano: “The thought is Beaver Nation will like this group of guys. They play different than the last couple years. The words we always love to use here, the grit, the hustle. And they’re good humans. They’re well-liked on campus. … It’s an attendance play long-term, vs. a revenue play of $30 here, $10 there. Also, if you don’t get people out to see this team early, and you wait all the way until Gonzaga, you find yourself doing a promotion to move tickets for Gonzaga two days prior, when you could have done it earlier in the season.” (link)

Plaintiffs’ lawyers in the House and related cases say in court filing that "a number of third parties have sought to profit from the Settlement by offering claims-filing services,” according to USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz. The attorneys add that “some entities have made various misleading statements to solicit" clients, and they are asking U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken to issue an order making it clear that class members do not need to enlist third-party services to participate in monetary relief, the use of such services will not increase the amount of monetary relief, and no-cost assistance is available from the Claims Administrator and Class Counsel during the filing period. Hawaii has released a statement concerning the departure of AD Craig Angelos which reads, in part: “This is a confidential personnel matter. The University of Hawaii confirms that Mr. Angelos' final day as the UH Mānoa athletic director is December 1. Effective December 2, Associate Athletic Director Lois Manin will serve as the acting athletic director. An announcement about a future search will be made by incoming UH President Wendy Hensel after the new year. President David Lassner met regularly with AD Angelos since he was hired, as he does with all his direct reports. Lassner made the decision to part ways with Angelos based on performance. This action is taking place now following the completion of the search for the new UH president.” (link); Angelos has also issued a statement explaining he was “completely blindsided when I learned of the outgoing President’s decision to part ways. When I asked for the reason, he cited my performance – a response that absolutely shocked me because I thought things had been going pretty well for our athletics department. In a short amount of time, I believe we accomplished so much like creating new revenue streams, hiring a ticket sales team, revamping fundraising efforts, focusing on NIL initiatives, navigating the effects of the NCAA House settlement, securing a place in the Mountain West Conference while eliminating travel subsidies, arranging charter flights for the football team, negotiating a record-breaking apparel deal, developing a facilities master plan, collaborating with the stadium authority on the new Aloha Stadium project, and balancing the budget for the past two years. … I want to assure everyone that there is no ‘smoking gun’ here – no hint of impropriety or malfeasance, either personally or professionally. I have always treated people with kindness and respect and have done what is best for the athletic department at all times.” Full statement. (link)

Villanova officially announces Oregon Deputy AD/COO Eric Roedl as its next AD. Eric quickly stood out among a very talented group of candidates as a leader with a breadth of experience, vision and deep commitment to student-athletes.” Roedl: “As a Villanova alum and former student-athlete, it is an honor to return to my alma mater. My vision is to collaborate with University leadership, the Villanova community, our coaches, staff, and student-athletes to maintain a championship culture throughout the athletic department that places the highest value on student-athlete experience and success and strives to match and promote the excellence of Villanova in everything we do." Michigan AD/CFP Selection Committee Chair Warde Manuel was asked about the seven-spot gap between Texas and Georgia despite the Bulldogs’ win over the Longhorns in Austin and said: “Well, obviously Georgia has a very good win at Texas, but as the committee analyzed the body of work of Texas versus where Georgia is at the present time with two losses, even to top-25 teams, we came out that Texas was still a very strong team deserving of a 3 seed. They have a top-5 defense. Quinn Ewers is leading one of the top passing offenses in the country. … It's nothing against Georgia. Georgia is a great team, but they did struggle against Ole Miss at Ole Miss but had a great win this past week against Tennessee. We will continue to monitor both teams and see how it goes in the next few weeks.” Manuel also says the committee “had a long debate” about Georgia and Ole Miss, Miami (FL), Alabama in particular. “It was very, very thorough. We're dealing with very small margins in terms of the different things that we're looking at and comparing, so I can assure you the committee went through it intensely in the last couple of days.” Asked about how the committee views strength of schedule – particularly in Georgia’s case, as the Bulldogs have wins over three teams ranked in the top 16 – Manuel explained: “We take a look at it holistically. Strength of schedule is a component. It's an important data point to us and for us. But it is not the only assessment that we make. But Georgia, they had a great game this week against Tennessee, and we will continue to look at them as they progress in this season.” More from Manuel. (link)

Priority Sports agent Rick Smith joins Tulane Sports Law Director Gabe Feldman to take a look inside college coaches’ contracts, the trends in college coaching, where the money is, where it’s going and more. Smith emphasizes the fact that universities don’t have endless supplies of money and are therefore “scrambling” to find ways to share revenue with student-athletes. For instance, one of Smith’s clients, a “mid-major coach,” was told he needed to take a pay cut by his AD. Smith also cites Florida’s decision to retain Football HC Billy Napier. What Gators AD Scott Stricklin didn’t say in announcing that decision is that letting Napier go comes with a $26M buyout. “They’re looking at the buyout with the loss of revenue and saying we can't make these numbers work, so we'll just let it roll.” Given the “exponential increases” in coaches’ salaries, Smith wonders “what's going to happen there. Are we going to stop in our tracks? Are we going to see these increases? Because if one school does it, then everybody needs to follow. So, are we going to have unicorns and outliers and then everybody else? Or how's that going to work?” Smith also wonders if, moving forward, athletic departments are going to set “different parameters for without-cause terminations. I think that 100% guarantees are going to be tougher probably to negotiate.” (link)

The Atlantic 10 Presidents Council concluded its Fall Business Meeting by affirming the league’s long-standing, deep commitment to basketball success within the current national climate. From the A-10’s release: “As a basketball-centric Division I Conference, the council and [athletic] directors discussed the changing future environment of NCAA Division I as it will be impacted by the court rulings on the House, Hubbard, and Carter cases. The consensus was that the Atlantic 10 Conference will continue to support and fund its flagship programs at the highest possible level as permitted by NCAA rules, with the permissive opportunities going forward directly benefiting student-athletes and their success through NIL opportunities. The council and the directors emphasized the importance of staying united as members of the A-10 during the changing times.” Also: “Although there will be a diverse approach to institutional management, a unanimous vote approved a recommendation to provide a $1.4M supplemental distribution from the Atlantic 10 sustainability fund. The equal distribution to eligible member institutions is designated for use to enhance basketball and/or offset the potential lost revenue from the NCAA due to the House settlement back damages payment model assessment assigned to every Division I institution.” More. Clemson Football HC Dabo Swinney voices his frustration with the House settlement: “Obviously we have to cut a lot of guys this year. It’s terrible. It’s the worst thing in my whole coaching career and what’s going on. But we’ve gotta cut a bunch of kids that have been in our program.” Several players who will not be allowed to return to Clemson for the 2025 season will be honored at Senior Day on Saturday, and Swinney says: “I’ve given all of them an option, if they are in their fourth year, then they have the option to be honored as a senior. They’ve earned that. Some of these kids would be back for their fifth year next year and they’re not going to have the opportunity to do that. And that’s sad, but that’s the way it is. So we’ve given them an opportunity. Those kids that if you’re graduating in December or May, you can be honored as a senior if you want to. … We’ve got a lot of walk-on guys that know that this is going to be their last opportunity and they deserve it.” (link)

+ Comcast will spin off its NBCUniversal cable TV networks, including MSNBC, CNBC, USA, Oxygen, E!, Syfy and Golf Channel, leaving only Bravo as the only network to remain with the NBC TV business. The assets being spun off generated roughly $7B in revenue in the 12 months ended September 30. Mark Lazarus, who is currently the chairman of NBCUniversal’s media group, will be named CEO of the new venture, per the Wall Street Journal’s Amol Sharma. Variety’s Brian Steinberg adds some context: “The split will undo a massive media deal. Comcast spent more than $13B in cash and asset contributions to buy 51% of NBCU in 2011, and then another $16.7B in 2013 to acquire the remaining interest in the company. Since that time, Comcast has acquired the kid-media assets in DreamWorks Animation, invested heavily in U.S. rights for the Olympics, and even dabbled in digital media by investing in BuzzFeed. But the spinoff is indicative of the growing weakness of cable as a medium. Standalone cable networks have become complex but toxic assets in the modern media lineup. They continue to generate millions in advertising and distribution revenue. … Still, they require millions in content spend to keep up their ratings at the exact moment that many of their viewers are moving to streaming services.” (link, link)
