Hawaii AD Craig Angelos has been dismissed by outgoing President David Lassner, effective December 1, according to Action Network’s Brett McMurphy, who notes that “no reasons were provided by Lassner.” The Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Billy Hull points out Angelos has been working without a contract under an “at-will” agreement and was informed of the news prior to leaving for last week’s football game at Utah State. Attorney Jeff Portnoy, a former member of the UH Board of Regents: "What's interesting is he's making this termination, Lassner, within weeks of his retirement. I find that fascinating that he's not leaving that decision to the new president. So is there something really serious that happened internally? Or is it a matter of dissatisfaction with his management style? I don't know that, but whatever the reason is, I don't think anybody can see this as a positive at all for the program. It puts it in limbo. The decisions athletic directors make, you have coaches coming up for extensions. Who's going to do that? These are imminent things." (link, link, link); Angelos will receive three months pay as part of his separation package, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Stephen Tsai, who reports Rainbow Warriors Assoc. AD for Internal Operations/SWA Lois Manin will serve as Interim AD. (link)

The Pac-12 has officially announced its choice of Octagon as its agency of record to advise the conference on its media rights strategy through its rebuild. The news was first reported by JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous proprietor last month. Commissioner Teresa Gould: “Going into the marketplace to identify and secure some strategic media partners is a really, really important part of our future. I’ve been pretty transparent all along that once we secured our six target institutions, then we were going to pause and pivot and focus on this media rights strategy. We’re really hoping to be a forward-thinking, open-minded kind of modern-day conference, and we are looking for the right media rights partners to help us create that.” Octagon EVP of Global Media Rights Consulting Dan Cohen says all media bundles are on the table, adding: “It's really important that we build that storyline, and we build that brand, and we tell the story of these eight schools and potentially more, and you do that best with free-to-air exposure.” Gould would prefer a variety of different platforms across linear and digital to grow audiences, something she said is a priority for coaches and administrators at member schools. “We have a blank slate. These presidents and these athletic directors are forward-thinking and are willing to do things that other conferences may or may not have considered doing. Playing on nontraditional days, looking at the format of our championships, doing things that help elevate and support our national brand and continue to keep these programs relevant is important.” SBJ’s Mollie Cahillane notes: “Ideally, a final round of partners will be locked in by the spring, depending on how quarterly earnings go.” (link); Official release. DePaul AD DeWayne Peevy in a letter to fans explains how the House settlement will impact the Blue Demons and writes: “While these anticipated changes bring new opportunities and increased resources for former, current and future student-athletes, they also create significant financial challenges for our program. We are incredibly fortunate within the Big East Conference that our new broadcast television deal, announced earlier this summer, will help mitigate this lost revenue. In anticipation of these changes, we have been working diligently to identify multiple opportunities to reduce our department's operating expenses and maximize revenue. As the college athletics system modernizes, our approach must modernize as well. You will undoubtedly begin to see these changes in the coming months.” (link)

Nebraska AD Troy Dannen hopes NU will be able to unveil plans for the renovation of Memorial Stadium sometime in early 2025 and says ticket prices won’t increase until construction is finished. Undertaking such a big endeavor, Dannen acknowledges, means the on-field product has to improve. "We’ll have to raise a lot of money. Why do we want to win six (games)? I know as a business man, I'd like to win six to get that momentum going into a year where we're going to start asking people for gifts to lay the cornerstones and get the foundation work of the new stadium done." Dannen also says he spoke with Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti about the officiating during last week’s loss to USC, particularly on the Huskers’ last offensive play where it appeared wide receiver Jahmal Banks was held. "In this game, the foul wasn't thrown. Our concern has been why? It's a judgment call, but it seemed kind of egregious. I'm not trying to take the official to the middle of town square, but how do we make things better? How does it not happen again?" As for whether a Terrence Crawford boxing match could take place in Memorial Stadium, Dannen says it’s up to the WBA light middleweight champion. “It's really in his corner, but I haven't talked to him since [he expressed a desire to fight in Memorial], but we'd like to get him in there.” Regarding reports that the Huskers’ season opener against Cincinnati next football season could move from Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium to Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium, Dannen explains: "I would guess we'll see something in the next week – where that will take place, not sure when, but there may be some changes on that.” (link)

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed an executive order yesterday that allows colleges and universities in the state to directly pay student-athletes for their NIL. The order is set to expire when the House settlement goes into “full operational effect.” A spokesperson for Ohio State tells Cleveland.com: “We appreciate the governor’s support as the college athletics landscape continues to evolve.” (link); Full EO. U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) has some ideas about NIL that weren’t included in the PASS Act he co-sponsored with outgoing Senator Joe Manchin (I-WV). In remarks at the Monday Morning Quarterback Club in Birmingham this week, Tuberville remarked: “I’m not against players making money, but we got to have some kind of penalty for players breaking contracts. So it’s got to go both ways. … So we’ll continue to look at it once we get a new administration in. I’m going to get a couple of people on the Democratic side.” As for precisely what penalties players should face, Tuberville says: “Well, going back. Well, there’s going ... There’s going to have to be some exceptions. But my thoughts are, you know, you sign a contract on NIL, I mean you can’t just up and break it. I mean you gotta…you wanna sign a year, two-year, three-year, you got a three-year contract. If you break it, there’s gotta be some kind of penalty. We’ll have to go through all the rules and regulations when it comes to the commerce committee on this.” Tuberville went on to say that players breaking NIL contracts is the complaint he hears most from his old colleagues in the coaching world. “I don’t think that it’s right to go out and start offering a half-million-dollar contract to a 10th grader in high school. I don’t think that…I don’t think you should be able to recruit with money. I think you recruit with your school and your salesmanship, but then you get there and then you give them the opportunity to make money.” More from Tuberville. (link)

Media Musings…
+ Now is not the time to push back on Ohio State’s frequent Big Noon appearances, according to Buckeyes AD Ross Bjork, who says: “I think that’s an offseason conversation honestly, but here’s what I’ll say: Fox has the first pick. We’re the biggest brand within the Big Ten. We have the most fans who watch our games. The ratings are really high, and I’ll just kind of leave it at that, but that’s really an offseason conversation.” Bjork also noted that Oregon being on the West Coast, where they’d be kicking off at 9 AM is likely a major factor in OSU’s noon kickoffs. “If Oregon’s playing on the West Coast, they really can’t play a 12 noon Eastern Time game. You have us, Penn State, Indiana. We’re the most successful programs this year. If you just look at that piece of it from a time zone standpoint, it kind of makes sense where it’s landed. That’s more of an offseason analysis, more of an offseason conversation.” (link)

Virginia President Jim Ryan talked about the future of athletics at a Faculty Senate meeting last week and noted UVA will look to strategies such as utilizing philanthropy and fundraising campaigns to help navigate financial challenges while preserving the University’s academic mission. He added: “Right now, it's so cloudy that it doesn't make sense to me to just throw in the towel and say we're going to no longer try to compete at the highest level in all the sports that we compete in. But there may come a time where we have no other choice than to make hard decisions about what we're going to do in college athletics.” (link)

Indiana AD Scott Dolson shares some background information on how Football HC Curt Cignetti’s contract extension came to fruition: “In my catch-up meeting with President [Pam] Whitten, I made a recommendation to her that we be proactive, that he's doing such a great job, certainly we're in it for the long haul, why don't we get ahead of this? And she wholeheartedly accepted that recommendation. And I should say this – and I'm not saying this because she's my boss, I promise you this – she's been incredibly supportive, back to when we made the change last year, just in the whole process. We wouldn't be here today. She probably hasn't gotten the attention she deserves, in terms of just her support for the program and for our vision for Indiana football. But based on that, after letting her know my recommendation, she accepted, and I had my meeting with Coach Cig. I said to him, ‘I know the last thing you want to think about right now is your contract.’ He's worried about our next opponent. But I said I want to get out in front of it because I don't want you to worry, does your agent have to shop you around? How are we gonna do this? I said it's really important to us that we're not just being reactive to someone coming after you. We know your value, and we know where you are in the Big Ten, and we want you to feel that. It was important to me that he didn't feel that we were just doing it because of somebody else.” More from Dolson. (link)

UC Santa Barbara AD Kelly Barsky joins AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to discuss her first year in the chair, the value of having deep institutional knowledge as a leader and her commitment to lifelong learning. Barsky and Garcia Cichosz also reflect on the nonlinear path to success, strategic thinking from the big chair and values-based alignment before diving into routines and habits, favorite podcasts and books every leader should read. Barsky explains she’s an “organized and structured person” but understands that an AD must be agile enough to pivot multiple times throughout a given day: “Having, I think, schedule and structure and communication and set time frames for check-ins are all great, but also be ready to change and adjust and recognize that priorities may need to shift any day, any week, any month based on the need and how to best serve the the department and the campus.” Barsky adds she’s “still leaning in and learning how to best use technology to help serve and support. [It’s] very granular, but as an example there are some really regular things that need to be communicated, need to go out, so it's schedule those all. Those are all scheduled emails that I have set up in advance so that I know that there's a predictable time frame that those will go out.” More on ADU. (link)

North Carolina Football HC Mack Brown opens up about how much the recruiting process has changed during his career: “It’s interesting that there’s a lot more talk about portal now than there is recruiting. It’s changed that much. You’re looking at guys now that are transferring, like the quarterback at Wake, this is his third school, and we fought our guts out to get Tez [Walker] to play at a third school. He didn’t even play at the first one. Now, here we are. We got guys that are at their fifth school. So it’s just changed so much, and it continues to change daily. We tell our coaches to stay off social media and don’t worry about what’s happening in the lawsuits and revenue sharing.” Post-House, Brown says schools are “going to have to start deciding who gets paid more because it’s going to be salary caps, and you can’t pay them all the same. You’re actually going to have to say, ‘This safety is going to get this much money, so this safety is going to get less.’ And I’m sorry, but if you don’t like it, transfer, because that’s just the way we feel. Not only are you going to have to do a better job of evaluating before they get here, you’re going to have to do a great job of evaluating who you’ve got, and then you’re going to have to develop who you’ve got.” (link)

Ole Miss Football HC Lane Kiffin says of the SEC Championship: “I’ve talked to other coaches, so I’ll just kind of give you the feeling from some other coaches that they don’t want to be in it. You know, the reward to get a bye [in the College Football Playoff] versus the risk to get knocked out completely. I mean, that’s a really big risk. I think it has ended up being a very unique situation of all postseason sports, the way that system is set up there. How could you go to [the SEC Championship] and get knocked out [of the CFP race]? And if you don’t go [to the SEC Championship game], you’re in. … There’s great benefits to this playoff system and so many people being excited and fans and programs and more games, and then there’s cost, too. The conference championships don’t mean as much. And it’s not just, do you potentially get knocked out by losing that? Do you [have] more injuries? So you’re going to get more injuries, play another game to get a bye, but then the other people are having their bye while you’re playing [in the conference championship game.] So I think that’s why, and I’ll go on record saying it, why a lot of coaches – or some coaches I’ve talked to – don’t want to go.” (link)

The MEAC has suspended a total of 36 football student-athletes – 17 from Howard and 19 from North Carolina Central — as well as an NCCU AC for their roles in a postgame fracas on Friday night. Commissioner Sonja Stills: “The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference has a zero-tolerance policy for fighting, as it directly violates the values of sportsmanship, respect, and integrity that define our Conference. We are committed to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all student-athletes, coaches, and fans. Any actions that compromise these principles will result in serious consequences. We expect all participants in MEAC athletic events to conduct themselves with dignity and uphold the high standards that reflect the spirit of the MEAC.” The names of those suspended were not released. HBCU enrollment is recovering from the pandemic at a “faster rate than much of the rest of higher education,” according to the Washington Post’s Danielle Douglas-Gabriel, who notes some HBCUs have reported as much as a 30% increase in this year’s freshman class compared with prior years. HBCU leaders attribute the gains largely to years of strategic planning that are now paying off. For instance, Livingstone (DII) President Anthony Davis helped raise the school’s freshman retention rate from 50% to 78% by connecting students with academic support centers and engaging them before they could consider leaving. Davis: “Our strategy is working. We’ve been looking at how we recruit and retain students, being very intentional and we’ve seen great results." United Negro College Fund Frederick D. Patterson Research Institute Asst. VP Nadrea R. Njoku adds: “All of our HBCUs are thinking critically about their business models and how they create different streams of revenue and target different populations. … They are in the public eye and taking the opportunity to tell their story." Meanwhile, opinions are mixed on whether the Supreme Court decision ending race-conscious admissions is a driving force behind the enrollment growth, as Douglas-Gabriel points out that applications did increase nearly 30% this year for the 39 HBCUs that use the Common App, including Howard and North Carolina A&T, but “those schools have reported steady growth for several years.” Benedict (DII) VP for Enrollment Management Yohannis A. Job says the SCOTUS decision “has given HBCUs an opportunity to really tell our story and highlight ourselves as an institution of choice. It has allowed young people to ask the question: Is this the place where I will be celebrated…where my identity will not just be a diversity checkbox?” More. (link)

ESPN is working on a plan to add generative AI to its SEC football coverage. FACTS, an AI avatar, is being trialed for “pregame convos, promoting education and fun with sports analytics,” SEC Network/ESPN Coordinating Producer Baron Miller: “FACTS is designed to test innovations out in the market and create an outlet for ESPN Analytics’ data to be accessible to fans in an engaging and enjoyable segment. It complements our journalists and on-air talent, providing additional insights." ESPN debuted FACTS at its Edge conference in New York last week, during which Chairman Jimmy Pitaro noted: “There are ways for us as an enterprise to really benefit from AI. And don’t get me wrong, AI is disruptive, but I see it as disruptive in a good way and kind of pushing the sports fan experience forward. I do not see this as displacing jobs.” (link, link)

The Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins are the first two NFL teams to sell stakes in their franchises to private equity firms, according to SBJ’s Ben Fischer, who reports: “Both the Bills’ proposed transaction and the Dolphins’ plans to sell 10% to Ares Management… are on the agenda for Tuesday’s NFL finance committee meeting, indicating a high probability of winning final approval from owners in December.” Financial terms are unknown, but CNBC recently valued the Bills at $5.35B and the Dolphins at $7.1B. Bloomberg, which first reported the talks between the Bills and Arctos and the Dolphins and Ares, said the Dolphins and other assets held by owner Stephen Ross were being valued at $8.1B. Bills buyers previously unknown include Rob Palumbo (5.6%), co-managing partner of the private equity firm Accel-KKR; a group led by Theresia Gouw (2%), co-founder and managing partner of the venture firm Acrew Capital; Sue McCollum (1.7%), CEO/owner of alcohol distributors Eagle Brand Sales and Double Eagle Distributing; and a group led by Tom Burger (1.4%), the co-founder and managing partner of Gridiron Capital. In addition to Ares, Dolphins buyers reportedly include Nets co-owner Joe Tsai, who will buy 2.9% of the team, and Nets minority owner Oliver Weisberg, who will buy 0.1% of the team. (link)
