Hawaii Assoc. AD for Internal Operations/SWA Lois Manin has released a statement concerning the dismissal of AD Craig Angelos which reads, in part: “There has been a lot of chatter regarding my employment at UH Athletics. I would like to set the record straight with facts and not conjecture. First of all, let me be very clear. I will not be applying for the permanent position. I applied for the UH Athletics Director job when David Matlin retired. I was a finalist. When David Lassner called to tell me that I did not get the job, I thanked him for the opportunity. I was disappointed that I was not chosen, but not surprised. Later that day the announcement was made that Craig Angelos was hired. I called every person on the search advisory committee to thank them for their service. Within the first 30 seconds of meeting Craig, I told him that I wanted him to hear from me and not anyone else that I had applied for the job and that I was prepared to support him fully. I remained in my current job… and supported Craig as best I could with what knowledge I gained in my 25 years in collegiate athletics administration at UH. … I have been both a union employee and an at-will employee. My effort does not change in any capacity or for any leader. It has always been my best effort. I have worked countless hours of nights, weekends and holidays for the department alongside so many others who love the program, our student-athletes, our coaches and our fans.” Full statement. (link); A Change.org petition calling on UH to retain Angelos has so far garnered more than 2,769 signatures. (link)

Syracuse Chancellor Kent Syverud talked with the Faculty Senate about the current state of athletics and said: “What’s undecided and what’s really up for grabs is where [revenue-sharing] money is coming from, who it’s spent on and how it’s going to be spent. Those are issues that if this was just a professional sport league would be decided by the owners and the managers and the commissioners. That’s largely where this discussion has been occurring at colleges so far. But there are stakeholders that need to be at the table in that discussion, and those are the students themselves, and not just the student-athletes, but the students who come to college partly for this as part of the experience. It has to be the faculty that are responsible for teaching and curriculum related to these students. And a little more, it has to be the presidents owning up to responsibility for these decisions. I’ve been trying to get that to happen, to get Syracuse to be at the table nationally for these discussions and here, to get all the University stakeholders at the table. I’m thrilled about this discussion and the involvement of this committee and these issues going forward. I have strong views on a lot of the questions that have been raised, including the role of collective bargaining going forward, including Title IX, including other things. But it’s not just my decision; it’s not the athletic director’s decision; it’s not athletics’ decision—on whether to impose a student fee, for example. It’s a more general discussion, and this is just the beginning of that discussion, but it’s going to be fairly active all year. That’s pretty much all I can say at the moment about the uncertainty.” (link)

Wichita State AD Kevin Saal explains in a letter to fans that the Shockers must generate $7M in new recurring annual funding to “compete at the level of our collective expectations” post-House. That figure includes $2.5M additional roster expenses and a minimum of $2.6M in anticipated revenue-sharing. Saal: “We intend to continue comprehensively evaluating our efforts and making adjustments that will allow for high-fan and -donor engagement across all of Shocker Nation while positioning us for excellence. Regardless of all the changes in our industry, as our staff walks through the halls of our Student-Athlete Center, practice facilities and team spaces, our mission remains clear: We develop a tremendous group of young people, in a formative time of their lives. Student-athletes are better prepared for the next 40 years of their lives because of their developmental experiences within our program. Changes to college athletics, such as revenue-sharing and additional scholarships, offer athletic departments new opportunities to impact students and support their pursuit of education.” (link)

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley provides an update on the state’s lawsuit regarding the House settlement: “At the end of the day, my belief is they’re going to have to answer to a South Dakota jury about why they’re not taking proper care of our athletes and why they’re making our taxpayers (foot) the bill for mistakes they’ve made elsewhere.” In its current form, Jackley says the settlement would cost the state about $700K to $1M every year for 10 years, and “the negative impact could come one of two ways. Either the Legislature would have to step in and use taxpayer dollars to fill that void, or, those dollars just simply won’t go to our athletes and our programs. Both of which we are trying to prevent.” Also from Jackley: “At this point, the litigation is a class action. There is what’s called the fairness act which requires the NCAA to give all 50 Attorneys General notice and notice of how it affects their athletes. Jackley says the NCAA is refusing to give that information; therefore, “we simply asked the federal judge to compel or require them to give that information.” (link)

Texas AD Chris Del Conte Q&As with KVUE’s Bryan Mays and says when pitching coaches on coming to Austin it’s about “how do I harness Texas? My job is to go harness what we have. When Bob Bowman took Arizona State to win a national championship on that Friday, I said, ‘Bob I'm going to talk to you,’ and he goes, ‘Hey, I'll talk to you on Monday. Let me go in win a national championship. I was like yeah baby, but that just tells you what [former Longhorns Swimming and Diving HC] Eddie [Reese] built – an incredible swim program. We feel we’re the very best swim program in the country. It’s been established. Eddie won 15 national championships. Bob just won his first at Arizona State and he says, ‘I want that job.’ The resources, the facilities we have, the recruiting base that we have, and swimming's really important. He chose to come. [Baseball HC] Jim [Schlossnagle] I worked with at TCU for 10 years. I knew him. But Texas has been to Omaha 38 times, won six national championships. There is only one Texas.” When it comes to the fan experience, Del Conte says he’s a “big fan of R&D. Rip off and duplicate. I’ll go to another stadium. Say we’re playing LSU at six o’clock. We’ll get there four or five hours before the game and we’ll walk the parking lots, I’ll send a staff member to look at food, send a staff to go look at their music, go look at their in-game, what can we incorporate here?” Facilities, Del Conte continues, have to match the Longhorns’ expectations. “Our football practice facility, we know that’s really antiquated. We don’t have an indoor, we have a bubble. There’s many high schools in the state of Texas that have a full indoor. … At the end of the day, we just can’t wait another 20 years. We’re going to always have to constantly invest if we want to attract the very best.” More. (link)

Georgia Southern AD Chris Davis says during an interview with WTOC’s Jeff Roberts that his relationship with former AD Jared Benko was collaborative but “at the end of the day, Jared was sitting in the chair. There was a lot of respect I gave and made sure that people knew Jared Benko was our athletic director. And it was very important for him to impact those moments and it was my job to carry out not only our decisions, but our vision of our strategic plan and continue to push forward whatever it was, whether it's a facility project or whether it was presenting to our boards or whether it was helping with a coaching search.” Due to his time with the department, Davis says he understands who he can seek out for information and help when needed, as he will have to transition from someone who carries out the decisions to someone who makes them “because if I do both, it’s like a head coach trying to be the head coach and the assistant coach. Or, in football terms, it’s like the head coach trying to be the defensive coordinator or offensive coordinator. It typically doesn’t work because there’s a lot going on there.” He also has a leg up because he doesn’t need to spend the first month on the job meeting the staff. “I know everybody here. My 30-60–90[-day] plan is to make sure I fill my old spot with a great person and then from there making sure that we set the tone as an organization. Like I said, we’ve already been running fast. Let’s continue to run fast.” More from Davis. (link)

To do that, you’ve got to win games or you can't stay. Everybody knows that. + Utah State has asked a judge for permission to join a federal lawsuit against the Mountain West regarding its transgender participation policy. The motion to intervene was filed the same day that GOP legislators in the state called on USU to join the suit. (link)

+ Former Utah State Football HC Blake Anderson has filed a $15M wrongful termination lawsuit against the school. The suit reads, in part: “The entirety of USU’s purported basis for terminating Coach Anderson ‘for cause’ can be boiled down to one, single incident involving a football player’s arrest on April 5, 2023, for an incident that was alleged to have occurred off campus at the player’s apartment. The alleged incident involved the player and the mother of the player’s child who, at the time of the incident, was not even a student at USU.” The suit also argues Anderson was unaware the player in question was arrested, saying he believed the player’s baby had a medical emergency. Once Anderson did learn of the arrest, the suit states he relayed that information to former Interim AD Jerry Bovee, who allegedly said he would file the report to USU’s Office of Equity. The suit asserts that the Office of Equity started its investigation only when USU began “searching for a reason to fire Coach Anderson at the insistence of [USU Vice President of Legal Affairs] Mica McKinney.” (link)
+ Former Virginia student Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., the gunman accused of fatally shooting former UVA football student-athletes Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr. and D'Sean Perry in November 2022, has pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated malicious wounding and five counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. Jones faces a maximum punishment of five life terms plus 23 years. A sentencing hearing is scheduled to begin February 4. A statement provided to ESPN’s Andrea Adelson from the Perry family asks the public to join them at the sentencing hearing “so we can send the message to the defendant and the judge on the impact of the actions the defendant took and what each life meant.” (link, link)

Several prominent voices in Hawaii are voicing their displeasure with the dismissal of Rainbow Warriors AD Craig Angelos, including Mike Kawazoe, head of the Rainbow Collective, who says effective immediately he’ll be “taking down down all of my banners with my companies from UH and cutting off all money going towards athletics immediately.” Kawazoe says of Angelos: “I think he was the right man for the job, and I believed in the vision. Now I don’t know what the vision is. I don’t know where UH is headed. And sometimes in life, you’ve got to recognize a bad investment when you see it, and this looks like a bad investment. … I would be stunned for the university to give us an answer on why he was terminated. I think they're just going to say, ‘Hey, we let him go.’ I deserve an answer. I pour a lot of money into that. I want an answer from them.” Former ESPN SportsCenter anchor/UH alumnus Larry Beil also weighs in: “I’m shocked. Absolutely. Because last night I was reading about Craig’s accomplishments, and I shot him a quick text: ‘Hey, congratulations, you’re crushing it.’ He goes, ‘Thanks, except I’m getting fired tomorrow.’ And I was like, ‘What?’ I wrote, ‘You have to be kidding me,’ and he said, ‘No,’ and then proceeded to explain. He didn’t know much more than I did, which was a concern. All of the circumstances around this are unusual. … It takes a while to learn what’s going on in the state of Hawaii. I think everybody would agree to that. Just as [Angelos is] starting to get acclimated and doing some good things, the president decides to make this move. Why this and why now? I don’t know.” (link, link)

North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham pens a letter to fans outlining how the Tar Heels will approach the House settlement. UNC will seek to expand corporate partnerships, and fans can expect to see more logos on fields, courts, stadiums and arenas – and perhaps on uniforms. Additionally, the Rams Club will soon launch a new initiative to support additional scholarships and other endeavors. Other components of the strategy include new ticket models and opportunities, expanded alcohol sales, further monetizing athletic venues with special events, cost-containment measures, and university support. “Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the University has assisted the Athletics budget by delaying and then forgiving some facility debt repayment and transferring additional funds. With the changing financial model in college athletics, the University has committed to supporting our mission and providing some of the funds needed for the new revenue share. … Industry experts believe the final settlement of the House case is still more than five months away, and we are using this time as an opportunity to position Carolina as a leader in the future of college athletics. We are committed to sharing revenue, recognizing the teams that generate it and continuing to champion our long history of success.” (link)

Jacksonville State AD Greg Seitz Q&As with The Gadsden Times’ Maxwell Donaldson and says of the overall state of college sports: “Certainly, I'm always for players being able to get paid; I think they certainly deserve that. So, we will do everything that we can do to ensure that we are being competitive within Conference USA and our peer schools that we compete against in offering our recruits, our players that the schools we are playing against are doing. … In addition, I'm not sure just us, but all across FBS football, I'm not sure we've done a great job showing the value, what the actual dollars are to a college degree. Those scholarships, housing and that stuff for the last several years, I don't think we have done a very good job of you're walking out of here with a $150K education by the time that you add that up. It's not like the kids haven't been able to receive some benefits in the past, because they certainly have, but we've done a poor job of educating not only our student-athletes on that but the general public about that.” Regarding how Jax State will specifically approach the House settlement, Seitz explains: “I think with the roster limits, that's going to give us some clear guidance moving forward, where all Division I schools will be operating under the same umbrella. Now, there's certainly a difference when you look at Group of 5 schools and the Power 4 schools from a budgeting standpoint and how much we are going to be able to pay our kids. Our plan is we want to end up doing the most that we can to help our student-athletes.” The move to C-USA, Seitz explains, helps clear up some confusion. “When you compete in FCS football, a lot of people still think you're Division II, or don't quite understand; No, our basketball team has been competing for them to win a national championship, they would have to go through Kentucky, Duke, those schools.” More. Chattanooga AD/Football Championship Committee Vice Chair Mark Wharton sits down with Southern Conference Assoc. Commissioner for Brand Strategy and Broadcast Dave Friedman and admits that putting together the FCS Playoff bracket is a stressful endeavor. “I think there's going to be a lot of work, especially the seeding of the top 16 – not that the seeding of the top eight was easy by any means. But making sure we get those top 16 right and always those last four in – or the four out – take a lot of time. So, excited about Saturday, but it'll be a late, late night, probably early morning.” When it comes to assigning weight to big wins or bad losses, Wharton says both are taken into account. “Obviously I'm biased towards Mercer, but they didn't play the strongest schedule, and they could beat Furman next weekend and still not be a top eight seed because they're right on the line for our committee right now. But it certainly didn't help with their scheduling. And I get football scheduling is very, very difficult, but we look at that and we are able to use four metrics as far as strength of schedule and predictive scheduling; but I think that's going to weigh a lot when you get talking about the nuances of where they are.” Wharton says the committee does a good job of focusing only on this season but acknowledges it can be difficult to leave personal biases at the door. “But again, the resume’s the resume and we have a lot riding on it as far as ESPN, ABC and all the partners to make sure we have the two best teams in Frisco.” Full Q&A. UCF will dissolve The Kingdom NIL collective and bring the NIL operation in-house in anticipation of the House settlement. Knights AD Terry Mohajir: “This was a plan that we have been working on for a while based on all the information we’ve received through the [Big 12] conference offices regarding the House settlement. … We would still love for [people] to give to the Kingdom, but once July 1 hits, everything will be in-house and those donations will move to a recruiting fund for competitive success.” He adds: “We have a person that does analytics for us. We have a person in legal, a person who handles business operations, people that helped generate revenues, that will look at the new commercial business or new opportunities for our NIL licensees, which are our student-athletes. They’ll be working with all of our different sports.” (link)

Oregon State is offering fans a buy one, get one free ticket deal for Thursday’s men’s basketball tip against Oregon. A household can purchase up to eight tickets for the Ducks game and secure eight free tickets for any game remaining on the Beavers’ schedule. The school designated three upper-level sections at Gill Coliseum for the free tickets. During the first two days, about 200 tickets have been purchased, with about half choosing their free ticket for the Gonzaga game, according to The Oregonian’s Nick Daschel. OSU Deputy AD for External Operations Sara Elcano: “The thought is Beaver Nation will like this group of guys. They play different than the last couple years. The words we always love to use here, the grit, the hustle. And they’re good humans. They’re well-liked on campus. … It’s an attendance play long-term, vs. a revenue play of $30 here, $10 there. Also, if you don’t get people out to see this team early, and you wait all the way until Gonzaga, you find yourself doing a promotion to move tickets for Gonzaga two days prior, when you could have done it earlier in the season.” (link)
